  • IGFTW Ep. 22 is all about one of the 3,526 Ganbare Goemon games published in Japan, Ganbare Goemon: Sarawareta Ebisumaru for the Nintendo Game Boy. This is a really great game that not only is completely faithful to what makes the series so great, but is also ridiculously cheap and easy to find as well.

      I agree! I wish more games would of came to the states. I remember downloading all the roms I could find, of all the Goemon games that never got released here. Some were no brainers to play, but some you needed to know Japanese in order to play, otherwise you would play the guessing game. Goemon 3 was a game i really wish had a English translation, as I spent hours trying to play it, also would of loved to understand the humor of it as well! I own all of the 4 games released here, love them all except for the gameboy version of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. This Gameboy game seems way better!

    We need a Goemon Collection... I had no idea this was a long-running Konami franchise no one talks about over here.
    I think only 3 of the 30+ Ganbare Goemon games got localized in the US, a damn shame to say the least.

    • @sdlock83
      @sdlock83 2 года назад

      That's because the content of Goemon are considered "inappropriate" and not PC. And Konami knows that there's no way they'd be able to release it in the West, especially since games are released internationally these days.

    I regularly watch your old Goemon videos. I need more! Your love for the series makes the videos just that more special. I always think of you when I try a new Goemon game. I'm looking forward to finally tackling the third SFC release.

      You're too kind, Andy, and I appreciate you. I'm glad you're playing the games, I think you'll really like 3 for SFC. This video was the last I did when I was still living in Hawaii, I think it was published not long before we hit up that weird bar in Pearl City before I moved.

      83Chrisaaron Thanks man! Yeah, I wanted to do this video now specifically because of all the negative Konami news, and also because the company is getting a lot of hate these days. Not all is bad with the company, especially regarding their past games, though I don't have very high expectations for their future plans.

    I was so ready to comment and call you out for leaving out the English European release, but then you acknowledged it at the end! Nice job with the whole video. Konami GB Collection Vol. 3 is not as cheap but still not expensive, with loose carts going for about $20.

    Thought I'd take a break from writing my next script, and take a look at a classic Jimmy Hapa episode. Always makes me miss you when I watch an older episode. You should do more Goemon videos. Well, you should do more videos in general, but I like seeing your take on this series. Probably because of your attention to detail, love of Goemon and the fact I hope to learn a little more about Japanese culture from you.

    • @ImportGamingFTW
      @ImportGamingFTW  5 лет назад +1

      Well, that's sweet, Andrew--but you should really stop dragging ass and come and visit me here in Japan. Also, what's your next script on...? I can hardly believe you're working on something new!

    • @RetroIslandGaming
      @RetroIslandGaming 5 лет назад

      @@ImportGamingFTW I gotta learn more Japanese, but I hope to visit while you're still living there someday. Dude, I've changed scripts and projects so many times now, I don't even know how to answer that lol. I've even trashed a halfway edited video. BUT, as of now, I'm covering five SNES games in one video. They are my most expensive SNES games and as far as I know, they are THE most expensive SNES games, excluding the weird Mountain Bike game and any Tournament style re-releases. I've had to do so much research and planning. ugh, but I've done some filming already, so things are looking up. Your Ganbarre Goemon videos are particularly helpful to watch because a couple of these games have a strong Japanese influence.

    I'll have to check this one out soon. I just played through Karakuri Dōchū for the first time last weekend. Pretty good stuff other than the lack of bosses and the killer platforming in those island and mountain stages. I guess the no continues thing was kinda rough, too. Thank goodness for all those extra lives in the mazes.

    It was my favourite Gb game in 2000 when was released in Konami GB collection. I became a "die hard fan" Goemon fan with N64 games (comment if you know the reference), and I also loved that Gb title.
    Kagemaru is a very interesing character. Is a evil version of Ebisumaru, like Bismaru and Obisumaru. He appears briefly but since I was a child I find fascinating the "evil twin" trope, so Kagemaru caught my attention.

    I didn't know there was a NES or GB entry in this series, They both look like a lot of fun. The part with names was funny as hell, but also, showed that there was a lot of enemies in the game. That jump arc is a Konami staple and a way of making games tougher, a cheap tactic, but it worked.

    • @ImportGamingFTW
      @ImportGamingFTW  9 лет назад

      RewindMike Thanks for watching Mike. Yeah, there have been a lot of Goemon games on nearly every Nintendo and Sony system in the 90s and early 2000s...we just never got much of them in the States. And I didn't realize that that jumping mechanic was a staple of Konami games. I guess that's how it is in the original Castlevania? (Can't remember if you can even halt your jump at all in that game, to be honest)
      What other games had that kind of jump? I'm going to guess they were mostly NES ones...

    Goemon's first portable game, and it is incredibly fun, but IMO the next great GB Goemon game didn't happen till the GBC with Dynamites. Everything else released on the GB and GBC Goemon wise just didn't hold up like those two games did.

  • @TimelessGamingUK

    Wow, your review of this game is amazing! I came here looking for help in beating the stage with the girl. It just goes on and on and on. I found all of the pearls fairly quickly and then spent ages platforming until I reached a section where the only way across is to diagonally jump onto a single block which is timed to disappear. It's so punishing! I was going to review it myself but I doubt I'm going to able to finish it.

    • @ImportGamingFTW
      @ImportGamingFTW  7 лет назад

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, that stage is pretty awful. Strange spike in difficulty that kind of comes out of nowhere! If you'd like to beat the game, you can find some stage passwords online. The last stage is pretty standard and easy, especially compared to the one that precedes it.

    It's the weirdest thing but speaking of KONAMI i just re-watched a few scenes from my favorite jdorama series Long Vacation from 1996 on youtube yesterday and holy hell the KONAMI logo can be spotted the background on at least two different outdoor scenes! Just a coincidence or super shameless product placement..? :D And me being a long time KONAMI fanboy how come i completely missed this up until now...? :P (search for "long vacation the kiss" where Sena and Minami are shooting fireworks on the rooftop and you'll see it!)
    And speaking of 90ties nostalgia...aaah KONAMI and Ganbare Goemon... and Hapa Sensei reviews! Great things always come in three!

    • @ImportGamingFTW
      @ImportGamingFTW  9 лет назад

      berugaslabor I checked out the clip you mentioned, and yeah, big Konami sign, clear as day (even though it was nighttime during that scene). ;)
      I wonder if it was deliberate product placement...probably. But I'm wondering also why that sign was there, unless it was placed on that building just for product placement? I don't think Konami Sports Clubs were a thing yet in 1996...could have been a Konami-operated game center, like many game publishers had back then...I doubt it was some kind of corporate office...
      Anyway, thanks for watching! :)

      Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Yeah it sure lights up the (Tokyo?) sky line more than those cute little hanabis of Sena!
      At least its safe to assume that that Konami logo corresponded to an actual Konami facility? Rather than they actually placed it there just to have it show up in the background of the shot -- which just sounds insane...?
      Oh well japanese dramas and animes and their sponsors is a toppic in itself but got me searching for this fine phrase! (though it dont know if Konami was an official sponsor of LV..)

    Too bad the second GB game was the one that got released as a standalone game in the west, that one is pretty terrible in my opinion. This one if far better in every aspect.

    • @ImportGamingFTW
      @ImportGamingFTW  9 лет назад

      Kristóf Muzsik I agree. That 2nd Goemon handheld game turned me off to portable entries in the series for many years...and I hadn't heard anything solid about the Smash Bros. thing, but already assumed he was high up there, if not at the top, along with Geno from Super Mario RPG. I'd be really happy if Goemon was a playable character, and I'd happily play SB on Wii U again, since I haven't really touched it except for the day it came out. I'm sure Konami wouldn't object to having him in the game...it might encourage people to buy DLC on one of their mobile games or something . XP

    I'd say you should correct yourself: Goemon didn't "turn into a template for pachinko machines"
    First: That is a PACHISLOT. Yes, there's difference. A HUGE one at that. One is an interactive slot machine, the other is a faster Plinko with more limited interaction.
    Second: the Pachinko and Pachislot template is older than Konami. Maybe older than SEGA? Who knows. All that is known is that everyone did Pachislot/Pachinko BEFORE Konami, even NINTENDO did, and really... Nintendo is much more sinful than Konami at that, they sneak those things in their games, like in Pokemon.
    Oh, thirdly: the shift to mobile is actually an attempt to gather the attention of people to the franchise. Sometimes used as a last resort to bring the series back into relevancy, because in Japan the mobile game fanbase is HUGE, even more than console and portables. It's possible it fell under due to competing with other high profile mobile games of the time... After all, which would win in Japan: A dying franchise nobody cares anymore, a new franchise offering huge rewards, or a well known and lively AAA franchise?
