  • This is the fourth video in a series of video essays covering Arkane Studios' recent work. In this video, I retell the story of Prey in chronological order. Along the way, I give a close analysis of the game's mechanics, design and narrative. I pay particular attention to the game's themes of empathy, and its metatextual engagements with its players.

It’s so annoying that immersive sims like Prey are always amazing games that will forever be underrated. Worse when it shares the name and failed legacy of another very good linear shooter.

It’s unfortunate, but prey feels like the kind of game that could have only been made exactly when it was made, not before, and probably never again after .. it sucks because it’s a fantastic that tells it’s story through gameplay rather than cinematics or even dialogue, which is a lost art in gaming nowadays

The thing I loved about this game is the way the station as a whole feels like a real place where people lived. I mean hell there are a huge amount of named employees that we never meet but are able to find both their work station and where they slept.

Tbh Dahl was quite a trolley problem too. People can judge whether what he wanted to do was good or not and whether what you want to do with him is for the good or not, but you are basically erasing his memory and brainwashing him, bending his will... is quite different from "convincing" him to do something.
Btw, very nice video, keep up the good work!

Totally agree, the fact is that undermining someone's free will - even for the purpose of saving others - is ethically murky at best.

@@EricCrosby @Eric Crosby guys seriously??! He had the order from Alex and morgans DAD to kill everyone on the Station including his own children and you still think stopping him at all costs is questionable? dahl decided on his own to do that nobody forced him it was his decision!!
So then You are saying that is better to let a psychopathic Hitman/cleaner like Dahl have his own free will to kill everyone than to do everything including to take Dahl's free will to save them? And you don't think that this line of thinking is ethically wrong or how you put it murky at best? Let me take this example to an extreme, with your logic it wouldn't be ok to k.i.l.l or brainwash t.e.r.r.o.r.i.s.t.s to prevent an attack like 9/11 or the b.o.m.b.i.n.g in London? So you consider the mental or physical integrity of such an individuum higher than that of an innocent group!!?

Fantastic video! My one note is you *can* actually stop the military operators permanently - if you've been playing through the game you've probably noticed that standing before an operator dispenser leads to it issuing a complaint message about how the aperture is blocked, and to clear debris to allow for new operators to be dispensed. So, if you pick up random furniture, and block the aperture on *purpose...* Just another great example of an immersive sim encouraging its players to think for themselves!

I've loved this series of video about Arkane games and your point of view about the narratives was very interesting. Whether or not I agree with you about the politic parts, I enjoy your courage to speak so freely and calmly about them .... too few are able to do this, but it's necessary and you're doing it the right way. Your essays brings so much to the videogame's discussion and demonstrate that videogames can be as effective as other mediums at conveying important messages.
About "What's Next" part what can I say...... I've recently finished Control and I surely will appreciate an in-depth look and a summary of the New Weird background that inspired it.
Last but not least , I'd like to suggest you a game, hope will be a essay topic, that literally changed my videogame experience forever : Outer Wilds, made by Mobius Digital.
A space exploration adventure that will bring you among strange planets of a solar system phisically simulated. A story that will challenge you with question about "the Future" (from yours to the one of the universe itself) and your role in life. And it's super fun to play too.

Another good vid. Lets get that engagement up. Also I'll post my chat statement her for posterity:
I gotta say, I love hearing someone steer into politics. Seems most game reviews do everything in their power to ignore that politics even exist when reviewing games with obvious political themes.

    • @silverhawkscape2677
      @silverhawkscape2677 2 года назад +2

Because no one wants to hear about Politics. Games are escapism FIRST. Anything political is usually secondary to how fun the game is.
Politics is also terrible for a games wider appeal due to how those could be so specific to the country, other people from other countries might not even get it.

    • @darklitebug
      @darklitebug 2 года назад +1

@@silverhawkscape2677 It took me a moment to recover from "games are escapism first." I had to breathe for a few minutes.
Games are art, first. They are a medium of expression. And art always carries meaning. Even making the statement that your work has no meaning, that it says nothing, means something. That's like, literally how human psychology works.
That mean is often, and I would be willing to say inexorably, political. Now your understanding of what politics are might be a lot slimmer than mine, and I guarantee that there are some things you'd call apolitical that I would call very, very political. Hence saying politics shouldn't be in games is rendered, by almost logical necessity, an incomprehensible statement.
And finally, art is probably one of the best ways to share your political situation to people outside your country. Videogames best of all. Humans strange emotional meat computers, and being able to feel through a well crafted artistic representation of the on the ground situation in real place that people live in is better then a thousand dry lectures about how bad it is in a place you've never heard of. Also, "might not understand." Are the extraterrestrials? Are they from mars? Did the Typhon sneak in while I wasn't looking? Cause last I checked all earth politics are rooted in the human condition. A transferable experience between us all.
Now, having said all this, Of you don't want to talk about politics in games...ok! Fine. Do that! I will not stop you from enjoying art in the way you most enjoy it. If you want Prey to be a game about shooting cups and making eyebrow wiggling jokes about the glue gun, I support you and would dual with pistols anyone who said otherwise. But you ground to stand on saying that games aren't, or are worse when they are, political. Prey *is* a game about empathy. The most important human trait. It says that even if you think the divides between you and someone else are insurmountable, that they are fundamentally unable to understand you, the right thing to do is to see through that lie, and reach out your hand. And the game is more beautiful for saying it.
      In my, of course, opinion.

@@darklitebug The fact you felt a viseral reaction to people saying "games are escapism first" is telling on what you are it is escapism.
Why else do most of Arkane's game have more options on lethal and non lethal choices and how those choices have impact.
It is a fantasy. A fantasy to role play into a character you want.

    • @darklitebug
      @darklitebug 2 года назад +1

@@silverhawkscape2677 What I am is a person who respects artists and art enough to not think that the first thing on their mind when making games about the choice between vengeance and mercy, or between understand and ignorance, was "Lets make sure this is some quality escapism." Every bit of the text of Dishonored screams at you, in big bold letters, that killing is the bad thing to do. Yes, there are many fun, cool, awesome ways to do a murder in Dishonored, because it would mean anything if there was no loss to choosing to be merciful.
Once again, you can choose to only see the escapism, the fun sneaksy stabs. And I get it, the stibity stablies are good in these games. They do contain escapism. But it is untrue that they are escapism first. The focus on the choice between violence and nonviolence is baked into the core of the game.

Something I find interesting about the final choice of the game is that as long as you dont get the actual bad ending then the experiment was actually a success, even if you decide to kill everyone. The fact that its presented as a *choice* instead of the game just automatically picking the outcome based on how many good or bad things you did shows that the Typhon has achieved at least some level of genuine sentience, and with that could very well develop empathy over time.

The first time playing this game was truly amazing. I never knew anything about this game, but the fact that it is somehow related to space and what not.
And already during the beginning sequence, I honestly just wanted to get to the balcony of my apartment, I picked up a wrench, broke the glass and stood shocked for like 20 minutes just to process what has happened. Since then this game felt like a horror for my whole playthrough. Sadly I never felt this way replaying the game, but it still is a wonderful piece of a game design and artwork
I also had a strange occurence, when after deleting and reinstalling the game because of lack of my drive space, I just deleted the folder, but not the save files. So after I reinstalled the game I had no visible saves applied, however, when hopping into a new saving slot I got through the introductory sequence into the lobby for the 1st time and saw Weavers and Telepaths hovering around the place, while I only had a freaking glue gun and a wrench!!! This was shocking, but really thrilling

Can't get enough of Prey. It initially looked so odd to me as a game but a friend recommended it so I gave it a try. I agree that it shows Arkane at their peak in game design and storytelling (environmental and otherwise); It has the perfect level(s) with so much explorablility which only gets better with that signature emergent gameplay. I feel that playing it on nightmare (no neuromods) without the HUD and with the broken bones and burns thing, and weapon durability is the perfect way to play it, but only after a first playthrough so that you can get a good understanding of the mechanics; This way you feel really confined compared to before, but you really push yourself to eplore and end up finding out that the game is perfectly balanced to the point that all play styles are equally as difficult.

I liked how you are free to make you own choices. I got the achievement for being as moral as possible, making the following notable choices-
-I used both human and Typhon abilities.
    - I killed the fake cook but spared the subject in Psychotronics (my reason being his records didn't line up with his appearance, backstory, and voice.)
-I helped Igwe, Sarah, MIkhalea, and Danielle. I completed Igwe's sidequest.
    -I spared Dahl.
-I destroyed Talos 1 (as I reasoned killing the Apex and the typhon would keep the Earth safer) but Escaped with the shuttle. I reasoned that since I'd be the one trace of Typhon material, the Nullwave might harm me (and if I escaped I could possible help humanity with the powers or die if needed.)
-I chose to take Alex's hand at the end.

It does a lot of damage due to it's rate of fire, has long range and you save on health because it is stealthy. I always wished there was an assault rifle in this game and the upgraded pistol plays closest to that type of weapon.

Now i feel like an idiot with the way I played the game, I was just going guns and wrenches for half the game until I realized that I ran out of resources constantly. One time I almost got softblock and almost ragequit, then realized I could load a previous save file, that saved me. After I got super neuromod- upgraded I was glad that enemies respawn, only that I prefered the mimics and phantoms instead of the telepaths, tecnopaths because they hit like a truck. For some missions I already got the items that was required and was like "wait, when did I get this? Well, cool"
Love the video. Some "choices" I didn't even notice I was making.

As with just about everything in Prey, "there's more than one way to do it" when it comes to stopping Dahl's operators. If you listen they even tell you how to do it - put something in front of the deployer machine. I loved this incredible game. The only two gripes I had were with Hacking and the End game. Hacking levels 1 and 2 were infuriating on a PC keyboard - their timers were way too short and I often had to retry the same hack more than 10 times to complete it. Levels 3 and 4 were much easier again, which led me to not take Hacking because I didn't want the nightmare of having to play 3 or 4 difficult hacks. When I finally took Hacking 3, I found it inexplicably easy. And by then I had missed out on many safes I could have hacked.
With the End game, there were a lot of unnecessary fetch quests and combined with long loading times for every level transition, I ended up watching videos on my phone while I waited. I suggest players try and put Prey on an SSD - perhaps the the end won't be such a chore then.

what I usually do with the nightmare is not just hide anywhere, i find a room that can be locked from the inside and hide there, would be neat if the nightmare had some sort of teleportation/shift through walls power, and indeed could find you if you stayed at one spot for too long

    Hi, great review!
Just one detail if you launch the game again: the point of the q-beam weapon is not necessarily to fill up the enemy life bar from red to green although you certainly can, it’s more that the typhons will die from the remaining red part of the bar. So basically the weapon is designed to weakens strong enemies and then you can wrench or shoot them just once or twice to empty the remaining red part so they die.
Also, as for every weapon in the game, some typhons are quite fragile to the q-beam such as the telepath techno path and the nightmare.
It’s quite something to work on the nightmare with a few recycling charges, qu-beam the damn thing and then using the slow-Mo power to avoid his one shot foot attack, kill him with one final wrench hit.
A shame this typhon is poorly designed.

The problem with randomly respawning enemies is that this discourages inefficient exploration - if you go to an area before you have done the quest that gives you the required keycards to fully explore the area then you need to come back later and re-fight the respawned enemies. This means that you need to have read the walkthrough to play optimally.
For example, I went back to the Neuromod division after I found out the safe combination which you know was a mistake - I should either have looked up the combination online and picked up the contents during the initial escape, or else waited until I was given the quest to go to Psychotronics via the volunteer quarters. I had to fight 3 additional phantoms which cost me precious ammunition because I didn't read the walkthrough.
    This is bad game design.

I picked up about 28 psihypos before I even unlocked Typhon abilities, because I rarely used recycler charges in combat. Overusing the recycler charges in combat naturally will make you miss out on good loot if you're not careful, lost a few good turrets that way.

More people should play this game.
It's a shame we will never get a proper sequel.
The arkane team that made this game is no more 😭
It's disappointing to hear that you didn't even play through Mooncrash, one of the best expansions ever made for a game. You're literally not supposed to finish it properly on your first playthrough so letting the timer make u anxious is entirely a self-created problem. On top of that, the story ties into the events on Talos-1 as well.
You should really try it again with a more open mind.
Once you know what you're actually doing in it, you DO have plenty of time to move at a pace of your choosing. You just didn't allow yourself to get to that point before quitting.

As for Mooncrash, I kind of shared your sentiment of having the run to be timed to be stressful in the beginning. Then I kind of just start buying alot of the hourglass corruption reducing items to get more time and to trivalize the difficulty. I also just do one objective at a time for a run and reset it immediately so you can just farm on corruption 1. Was it optimal or run efficient? No but accepting that i dont need to do everything perfectly and just slowly learn one part of the level at a time made it quite rewarding once everything comes together.

I played Prey like DOOM. I was playing on Normal with no survival mechanics turned on so maybe that olaystyle isn't viable on hard or Nightmare. Idk.

    • @EricCrosby
      @EricCrosby  3 года назад +5

It's definitely viable on lower difficulties. On Nightmare, ammo conservation is a huge concern so conflict avoidance becomes a lot more viable than guns out combat. Of course, the upgrades in the human talent trees help a lot with that too.

Look, if you really just couldn't resist trying to get at them damn gamers who don't like politics, at the very list check that your epic own isn't nonsensical.
Art and politics don't "intertwine at the very core" any more than art and romance, or art and violence, or art and real life. Art can be about many things, including those, and it can be appropriate to discuss them for some pieces of art. It just as well might not be about those things, and preferring art that is apolitical is no worse than preferring art that is unrealistic. Or nonromantic. Or nonviolent.
Ideally, of course, you'd understand the actual position before trying to mock it. When people say they don't want "politics", what they mean is they don't want art to be used for the purpose of propaganda. Prey isn't a piece of propaganda, and no one would bat an eye at you discussing politics in its context. Bringing attention to that makes you look like a fool.
This otherwise pretty decent video would be much better off without this pathetic jab.

on ending... I played Prey as a good person but confused. With the typhoon's menace earlier on, I agree with January to blow the station. When I met the crew, I feel bad about my secret plan of blowing up the station but considers helping them to ease their last days and they can provide info and help-- plus less lonely in this infested station. Gradually, open up to them and while scared that they may bring a typhoon to Earth.. decide to let them escape-- they may tell the mistakes we made here. During the run back and forth, keep getting these visions.. you are not who you are... wake up... and so on, making me edgy. Eventually destroying the station, finding that it was a simulation, and even the people I save were AI... made me angry. Alex Yu is selfish. I am a typhoon, I realizes how much these humans been cruelly experiment on my kind and they separated me from my kind.. subjugating me, changing me to something else. Time to end these experiments and go back to the collective minds.

I just finished the platin thropy 4 days ago
And having 400+ hours in that game and just listen to you just wanna make me play the game again
Question: why didnt you upgraded your weapons or dont collect the neuromod building plan early in the game you just need hacking level 2 and then you can farm aliens with your powers. I would use the mobility and sneaking abilities so finish them you dont try to stun to quick many more of throwing objects at them with lifting level 2 or 3 to insta kill aliens also to activate your abilities need the Bar of "PSI" there is a side mission where you can put in the water system a potion where you get from any drinking sink and other water sink free unlimited "PSI" and with that you can be unstoppable
If you want more details you know where to find me or i think the RUclipsr of this channel know too much to give you tips and tricks
