    Been doing this for a while now with my B2410 and Woods BH70-X. One other thing that is helpful, you know those long reach gripper things for getting cans off high shelves? You can use one of those to work the bucket. I use it to raise and lower the bucket when moving the tractor with the hoe. I always keep it in neutral though since the wheels aren't even on the ground when digging. The bucket and outriggers keep it from moving.

    As a L2501 / B77 owner, I did not use the backhoe to move the tractor knowing that the wheels were engaged to the transmission and would shift seats to re-locate.
    Using the range selector to disengage the trans is definitely an awesome productivity gain.
    Why, however, is lifting the rear wheels off the ground important while doing so if the fronts are on the ground (assuming front wheel assist is engaged)?

    • @Zurar
      @Zurar 3 года назад +7

      Possibly, but it may also be due to the nature of backhoe ATTACHMENTs, as they're not part of the main frame of the tractor. Lifting the machine at the pivot point of the backhoe puts a lot of stress on the backhoe attachment as well as the mounting frame. The vast majority of people that own these machines have no idea what metal fatigue is or how it works, but this is one of those maneuvers that causes it. Granted, a lot of these small tractors are over-engineered due to their target buyers being inexperienced, but I still like to reduce the amount of undue stress I put on my machine so it will last a lot longer.

    Many people think there is a pressure problem with their machine because they think they can burry the bucket and pull. I had a friend who bought an old 580c and thought that but after some pointers on how to dig he handles it pretty well for a sloppy old machine. I kept telling him to dig easy but he wasn’t getting it until I told him to get some potato chips and cold sour cream. When you can drag the chip and load it all the way across the sour cream without breaking the chip your getting the idea of how to dig. Remember machines can do and will hurt themselves by rough operators.

      Digging from the sides trying to pull on big ass roots or large rocks can't be good either.
      As a person who works for a construction outfit sure time is money. But a home owner that owns this type of equipment can take all the time he needs switch seats and try not to test the limits of his investment and realize it sure beats a shove by hand any day of the week. Stupid advice. Seriously, moving with the backhoe isnt hard and you have more control. using a stick could cause you to depress it to far and take off faster than intended or go further than intended, and god forbid you hit someone. I ever see someone pulling such a stupid stunt like that and they will be off the machine, if its someone on my crew, they will be off the job.

    I spend a lot of time honing the skills of my equipment operators, 13 of them so it’s a constant process. One thing I forbid with my backhoes is, during to push back, angle change or tug back using the hoe, never lift the rear wheels off the ground . Besides stability, especially with a non belted operator seat, it places out of design stresses on the backhoe along with safety / stability issues. Lift the bucket a foot, trans in neutral, stabs slightly up off ground, boom out no more than quarter reach. Then small incremental pushes or pulls. Never on a slope, even a small grade. Any slope work requires brakes on, operator to use repositioning with traditional drive forward, or reverse. A competitor of.mine had a fatality a couple of years back with a BH coasting down the slight slope, operator tried to use the backhoe to arrest the travel and the unit flipped.

    I leave the parking brake on - FEL on the ground - then shift from 4wd to 2wd and lift the bucket off the ground before performing the 'scoot' (lifting the back wheels off the ground negates the parking brake, going from 4-2wd lets the front wheels roll.
    Oh and don't forget to steer the font wheels where ever you want to go... sometimes trenches makes turns!

      With that much trenching to do, it might be better to rent a dedicated trencher. Trenchers aren't as fun to opperate as a backhoe, but they'll get the job done in less than half the time. And, since they disturb less soil (the trench they cut isn't nearly as wide as a backhoe's bucket), replanting is also much easier.

    I appreciate your vid, but like most backhoe vids, us beginners need to see what you are doing with the controls! Not necessarily what the bucket is doing. Or maybe do a split screen to indicate both. For example, if you want the boom/bucket to do this, then this is what you need to do with the controls. I have yet to see anyone do this. I do a similar method which is faster and safer with my old kubota L39 tlb. I start by placing footbrake onto fist click position, then lower front bucket with forks down into the ground, front wheels are in the air ( to get max. stability) I then put the gear box in low range 1st gear, but shuttle in neutral. turn seat around and start digging trench as wide as you like. to move forward without doing the long correct method , complete the fist dig section, drop revs to lowest setting.I then lift stabilizer arms off the ground ( enough just to be off ground: I turn around my upper body and lift front bucket to clear only enough to not dig in. if you want you can put the hoe into the trench teeth down close to the ground, so a quick down push for safety will stop forward momentum . I push the shuttle forward to run slowly in low range first gear ( slow crawl). I only have to move about 5 yards, so watching the rear and getting to my position, I pull shuttle out of gear and push front bucket forks into the ground, lower stabilizers and carry on digging. its very fast and you need a lot of experienced hours on your machine as well as think the sequence thru every time. I am able to do about 2 hundred yards trench in 2 hours. ( warning, not for a novice)

    Rear end off the ground to move yourself forward with a hoe ??????? sure if you want to tip from side to side as you move and there are many instances in which you cannot put that kind of force downward, in wet sloppy conditions or clay, the bucket will just sink... and putting that much weight on the front tires alone is bad for them, they are not made to take that much weight, look at the load rating.... you can, with practice, swing the front end of the tractor around, just pull it off the ground with rear stabs up and you can use the swing to pivot on rear tires, saves reaching around to steering wheel... you can also place the bucket flat on the side of the trench, push for a bit ( remember to curl bucket to keep flat ) reposition bucket and push a bit more if needed, pushing down in your work area with that much force is not always a good idea, especially if your excavating for footings.... you cannot disturb the sub grade, it must be Native soil, un-disturbed you place footing on... I hope this helps.... over 40,000 hours running backhoe's.
