Did I redeem myself? Re-crocheting a Victorian Pelerine (or cape)

  • The last time I tried this pattern, I ended up making a cape for a doll (or Nutella!) I had a bee in my bonnet since then, and I just couldn't let it go. So today, I am re-trying my hand at crocheting this 1870 Crochet Pelerine (or cape!).
Thank you again to ‪@justvintagecrochet‬ for picking this pattern for me!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

Just finished rereading the Anne of Green Gables series, and thought you'd appreciate this little gem.
"Susan, unbowed by the culinary cares that were heaped upon her, stalked about, showing the ladies to the guest-room, serene in the knowledge that not one of them possessed an apron trimmed with crochet lace five inches deep made from Number One Hundred thread. Susan had captured first prize at the Charlottetown exhibition the week before with that lace."
    - excerpt from Anne of Ingleside (Anne of Green Gables, book 6), chapter 32; Susan is Anne's housekeeper, and the ladies in question are arriving for a quilting bee

Oh my goodness that is absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad you went and reworked this because it's lovely. The idea of an entire outfit to match would be spectacular- I liked the thought of golden yellows and browns- leaning towards autumnal colors. That color forest green is so cozy to me, and I think it fits the "dragon scale" look very well!

it's gorgeous! and you'll find that it goes with everything because it's just so gosh darned handy. i have what i've been calling a capelet (a pelerine, perhaps?) that a friend gave me--it's made from granny squares (as i've been told) in all sorts of colors and goes over the head rather than ties in front (so, yes, i mess up my hair getting it on and off) but it's the first piece i reach for when i need easily removable warmth that doesn't restrict my movement.

A burnt orange ensemble would give it a great pumpkin vibe! Or if you want a different vibe, something with neutrals like cream, tan, and brown might give it a mushroom and moss vibe. Maybe paired with some sort of crocheted handbag that's red with white spots like an amanita mushroom.
