Using an Antique Crochet Pattern | The Perfect History Bounding Sweater

- Wearables are my favorite things to crochet, and I’m always on the lookout for cute sweater patterns. I’m also a big fan of historybounding, so imagine my delight when I came across this crochet sweater pattern from 1917! I thought it would look just as cute with a pair of jeans as it would a full WWI-era outfit. The pattern seems easy enough at first glance, so it can’t be too hard to make…right?

imo jumpers and cardigans (maybe even some jackets) are the best pieces for historybounding, they have all come back in style so much over and over again they're truly timeless at this point
Agreed! They're really easy to mix and match with more modern pieces as well.
Great choice on the yarn for the collar and cuffs! Perfect.
I remember my great grandmother in similar styles. I thinnk she was born around 1896.
Can we get a standing ovation going 👏🏼 👏🏼 this is next level dedication !!!
oh man, the sweater looks absolutely stunning! And now I'm def am feeling the urge to try it myself, because who doesn't want a comfy cute sweater?
Thank you! I highly recommend it, it was a fun (and comfy!) project.
The animation for the construction types was *chef's kiss* perfecto! Visualizing the construction of a pattern is NOT an easy thing to convey. This is why me and amigurumi are not as close of friends as I would like -_-'. I watched the whole video but that moment alone was worth the subscribe. BRAVO!
Thanks so much! ☺
I have a 1912 pattern "increase as the last and work 1 row in each shade". Only clue-it takes 9 shades. I love the challenge and look of the very old patterns, they keep me on my toes.
I would love to see more videos like this of you putting together vintage crochet patterns. It looks lovely 😊
Thank you! I definitely plan to do more. ☺️
Definitely something my grandmas wore in that time. Very well done.
Thank you very much! ☺️
I love that you didn't give up!
I like your don't quit attitude. Great job! ❤
I think it turned out gorgeous!!!! With all the challenges you overcame, never gave up and actually finished it you should be proud to wear it. Well done, you!!! ❤
Thank you so much!
You just popped up. It looks more like a jacket than a sweater. It looks lovely and would be great any any colour. I'd love it in a light grey.
Light grey would be pretty!
I personally would’ve kept the length but that’s my taste. Love the yarn colours and effect. Think it’s really lovely and looks very comfy.
A challenge and mystery, but it turned out cute.
You are a very classy lady, Thankyou for the video 😊
You are such an inspiration! Great job!! I love resurrecting vintage patterns!!
“This is what you’re making….go on figure it out!!🤔🤔🤯”…..I’m on the floor laughing 🤣 😂😂 just found you’re podcast and I’m “hooked” ❤️❤️😜😜😜🧶
I have the same problem when trying to make clothes to fit proportionally. Its so frustrating. It's very nice and looks great on you.😊
It is amazing that you found vintage crochet! Glad you figured it out and im excited to follow your tutorial soon. Cant wait!! Love your video and being funny!
Thank you! 😊
I just found your site and this video. I'm a pear shape female also. I'm happy you didn't give up and found the yarn and needle size that worked. I love the vintage oatterns.
Fabulous!! You were warm and funny, and the sweater came out perfectly, you did an incredible job!!
I'd love to learn that square stitch.
Also, my dog also has to contribute to every project.
Aww, thank you! I'm considering either doing some shorts or a compilation video of stitches, as there are a few interesting ones I've only ever seen in vintage patterns.
Please do make the stitches video, I live how it looks!
I am great full to learn, from a master of a master, crocheter, Thank You,, for all that you do. Great job! 💕🥰🙋🏽♀️🇵🇷🇺🇸 6:02
Great job! Looks really pretty on you. I admire your patience and determination. I would have given up the first go around.🙁😁 shame on me. Love your analysis of the problems. And now you have lovely sweater to wear. You've inspired me to look at some of my finished projects and try again. ❤
Thank you so much!!
Gorgeous!! Your so smart to figure this out!! Looks great on you too!
I have that pattern! You've inspired me, love your yarn choice - I agree wool may be too warm. Very nice how it frames your face.
Very snazzy. Great job!
Congratulations 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Really great job. The "wall of text" is a huge problem with with old patterns
Thank you! Yes, I've seen that with several old patterns - probably a result of trying to cram as much information as possible onto as little paper as possible. 😆
The jumper is beautiful. Yes well worth the wait.
Thank you!
🦋 Thank you for the video ~ Beautiful sweater❤ love the yarn color and the lovely design with the fluffy cuff/trim makes this sweater look elegant🍃 Happy Yarning 🧶🦋
Thank you! 😊
Wow, it turned out great.❤
So cute! I love the stitch pattern. Want to make one for myself!
Thank you!
Great job! 🎉❤
Thank you! 😄
That looks fabulous. Well done 👍
Thanks so much! 😊
Beautiful! Inspires me to think about a sweater for myself. Haven’t ventured that direction in my crochet yet. Love the color and the “fuzzy” yarn is perfect for the trim. Congratulations on the finished project.
Thank you!
You have put soooooo much time into getting this to look that great-it’s at least a $767.22 garment 😂 It looks great on you! I used a bamboo/cotton mix a few months ago and it simply drapes perfectly; the only down side is it being sans any wool it’s not for the worst winter months. A Spring and Fall sweater; with that color it looks like Fall😁I hope you enjoy it for many seasons-Great Job❣️❣️
Thank you! ☺️ Yes, the bamboo/cotton totally wins for drape, but definitely not for freezing temps - I found it works great with a long-sleeved layer underneath.
Soooooo pretty!
Hi sweets
Loved watching your vid. From beg to end. Imo you are very entertaining. Lol. More than most. I'm definitely into vintage type . I love seeing you all solving all the dilemmas. By the way that sweater looked lovely colors perfect on you. Keep up good work!!!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Columbia Book of Yarns, 1917? Tried 1906 Columbia Kimono--splity yarn, too small, etc., weird armhole construction, gave up. Yeah, I know. At least you made it thru. Good going, congrats!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
You did a great job, looks nice on you.
Aww, thank you! ☺
That turned out BEAUTIFULLY! When I saw your face when you were going to start over for a third time - I really sympathized with you! I've been making a sweater that I have frogged AT LEAST 3 times before getting the sizing right. I felt your pain. ☹️ However - your finished product looks fantastic!
Thank you so much! Sizing with crochet wearables can be such a pain, it's so hard to tell whether it'll work until after you've already invested hours into it. 😭I hope your sweater fits on the 4th run!
This is so beautiful. Please put out more content!
Thank you, so glad you like it!
Excellent
Very nice, it looks extremely comfy!
Thank you! It is super comfy, highly recommend 👍
If your gauge is too large, you can alternate hook sizes as you go. I am mixing two fingering weights, very different, one tight, one loose, wool, vs alpaca. With the alpaca I use a larger hook for the center granny, and change to a smaller hook for the last rows, makes the gauge the same as the smaller hook for one wool granny. I realize you're making clothing, but I think using a larger hook size in the hip and changing to a smaller hook at the wait might help you.
Great tip! I didn't think about that, will definitely keep that in mind for future wearable projects.
This is amazing! I've been wanting to try vintage crochet for ages so now I'm planning to make one of these. It looks so good on you. You definitely have me as a subscriber now.
Thank you so much! ☺️
Love this video, well done! Your project came out great too. 😊
Thank you so much!
Your sweater came out absolutely beautiful!!💜. It fits you perfectly!💜
Thank you so much! ❤️
Great translating!! You have to remember there was NOT acrylic, rayon, nylon, etc yarns. Beautiful work. You do know you do have resources that isn't Google. Just about everywhere has some sort of guild, club, or group.
You’re fantastic and deserve so many more views!
Awww, thank you! 😊
I love this. I have this pattern. Love your videos.
Thank you! 😊
Looks great.
Thank you!
Wow it's gorgeous 😍! Loves the colour and everything! Definitely going to make it!
Thank you!
Beautiful 😻
Thank you!
i love it!
This is great! I like hearing about your process.
Thanks so much!
Nicely done on the sweater! It looks really comfortable. I was curious, so I took a look at the pattern you found, and I am curious about something. The pattern calls the stitch pattern the Blockstich. But that's not the blockstich that we have today. I tried to reason out how to create the blockstich pattern from that crochet pattern, and I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Could you maybe do a tutorial on the stitch you used for the pattern?
Thank you! I do plan to make a stitch tutorial at some point, as you're not the only who's asked. ☺️ In the meantime, the best way I can describe it is like a sideways puff stitch. Instead of inserting your hook in the next stitch to make your loops, you make them around the post of the previous stitch.
@@stitchnfiction the previous stitch. That's what I was missing... okay, it makes more sense now!
Se magnific! I love it! ❤ Great job! Really beautiful!
Thank you so much!
Very cute, now i wNt to make one lol
It' so cute!
Thank you!
Adorable!💚 Great job
Thank you! 😊
OMG, I;m so glad I'm not the only one who gets more than half way done, (i.e 90% done) decides I don't like how the project is turning out, and pulls/frogs it all out. Better to start over than have an unsatisfactory finished project.
Exactly! Also, the yarn is too expensive to waste, so if I don't like the finished project I'll end up frogging it in the future anyway to repurpose the yarn 😅
Oh my gosh this is so awesome! Thank you!!! 💘
Thank YOU!
Oh well done. Absolutely gorgeous. New sub here.💛💛
Aww, thank you! ☺️
Amazing!
Thanks!
This is the 1st time I've seen one of your videos,I loved it,very interesting subject doing antique crochet patterns,I think your sweater turned out wonderful & looks wonderful on you, can't wait to see more videos but when you're doing them the stitches can you please tell us what stitches you are using,Thank you..❤😊😊
Thank you! I usually try to mention what stitches I'm using, this one I actually made a tutorial for (the 1917 Block Stitch), because I hadn't seen any existing ones for this particular stitch.
I would love to know the stitches in the block stitch,I should had put it in my first comment..lol..😊
Did you do a tutorial for the stitch? It's lovely.
Yes I did! You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/3jNL8-hTPuw/видео.html
I love it!
Thank you! 🙂
a lot of historical patterns, beyond assuming you have extensive knowledge of crocheting, they also expect you to come accross the desired piece you're making in your daily life so you'd know instinctively what it should look like
I noticed on one of your other videos that you used the term victorian terms. Those victorian terms are actually UK terms that we in the UK still use today. The terms you use are USA terms. Just thought I'd let you know.
Apologies for not clarifying! Yes, I'm aware of the difference between US and UK terms.
Can I ask how much yarn you needed for it?
I regret to say that I didn't track this very well! I *think* I used about 2,000 yds for the body and sleeves (green part) and about 500 yds for the cuffs/collar/etc (white part).
Thank you!
How get sizes
Lots of trial and error! I tested mine by making a sample swatch to determine my gauge, compared it to the total number of rows in the bodice and then increased/decreased the hook (or yarn) size accordingly.
@@stitchnfiction Your color choice is fabulous btw (both colors), and the pattern seems like a sweater to live in when cold weather hits….actually I could see this w/a zipper up the front, lined and turned into a long jacket, it’s that cute. Thanks for sharing. 😻
Thanks for watching!
Do u sell translated patterns? I’d love to make this
I wouldn't feel comfortable selling the translated version, as it's chock-full of mistakes! There were a few areas where I realized I had miscounted and I just kind of fudged those as I went along instead of correcting the pattern. 😅
i hold my hook just like you. omg another person who is not a knife or pencil person
There's dozens of us! 😄
LOL, I was just thinking the same thing. Until now, I'd not yet come across anyone on YT that holds hook and yarn the way I do!
@@tarnr5713 it’s more comfortable for me. I’ve tried the knife and pencil and it actually hurts and I have no control
yesterday i came across a picture on pinterest sayin "your [knitting] needle should be yay big" with a black dot beside it to shove your needle through , it's so adorable but you'd have to have the original book and be willing to hurt it in such a manner, sad (i guess you could use a needle gauge and see which one it corresponds to)
Wow, I would not make it past the first part since I have a hard time even following a pattern without seeing a video first
Beautiful 😍
