Justin ^ Acura TSX is a good choice for a first car it has the infamous k series motor very reliable good on gas and it last forever with great maintenance !!
Man I love the cars from the 50s and 60s they just have so much personality and they don't even have to be fast they just have an awesome street presence to them
V4 Garage it was released during a recession, with serious problems. For instance, many were shipped out with missing and missaligned pieces, due to cross manufacturing with mercury
The teletouch was not available on the '59 models; both the manual and the automatics that year were column stick-shift. Do you have any numbers on how many manuals and automatics were sold?
as an Edsel owner manual transmissions are actually quite common on the ranger models where higher trim models such as the pacer (discontinued after 1958), Corsair (discontinued in 1960 model year), citation (also discontinued in 1958) and the wagons roundup(1958) villager(1958-60) and Bermuda(1958) were more likely to have automatic transmissions
@Greg B Hi Greg, for accurate breakdowns on transmission production, I'd suggest joining the International Edsel Club for $25 dues per year. They are the more friendly of the two Edsel clubs. You'll make friends, and learn enough to make an informed purchase of a used Edsel.
Awesome! Glad you got to drive this car. The parked shots in the trees were SO pretty, nice job with that. AND thanks for FINALLY showing us all the shifting action. ALSO please consider adding some over-the-shoulder driving shots so we can see the dash and the road a little bit. That would be SUPER cool. You need another camera for that?
I have always loved Edsels. I really don't understand why they didnt sell more, I think they look fantastic. Maybe it was just too expensive, and people didn't want to put that much money into a startup car company. All I know is I've got a feeling that Edsels will be worth quite a lot down the road.
Because think of the amount of people that wouldn't buy a mercury over it. You're about to get the Edsel and then you think.... For a little bit more, I could get (___).
Edsels quality control department was a failure. The guy heading that department thought Edsel would take sales away from Mercury so they purposely left parts off some of them. Pretty soon Edsel became a joke and comedians were making jokes about them. Its sad. They were ahead of there time for a short while. Read the book. Disaster in Detroit. The story about the Edsel.
Just wanted to thank you. I love all old cars that have been saved, yes, even a Vega! I introduced my son to classic cars in our 1978 Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee. You and him have the exact mannerisms and humor!! He acted the same way when he saw it. We flew to Texas and drove it back to Ohio, he used the yacht and boat terms, but loved it by the time we home. You brought a smile to the faces of our family!
This was emissions free, pre-unleaded, and Edsel was intended to be a step above Ford so I imagine it may well have run a slightly hotter carb from the factory as opposed to its Ford equivalent. So that number seems on the level.
TheCowGoesMoo o 1971 was the first year of emission control so before then but after around 64 i would say is when these cars made a shit ton of torque and hp!
The steering wheel is huge to give you leverage to steer... I love cars from the 50s gosh the 50s were the most beautiful decade for cars they were all just gorgeous
My father had an Edsel back in the day. He said it was one of the best cars he ever had. Twenty-five years ahead of his time, he said. Eventually he gave in to peer pressure and traded it in for a Fairlane, which he said couldn't compare to the Edsel.
I can relate because I drove a 1973 Plymouth duster and it was so different than driving my car! Thank god it had power steering but it was such a different experience and I loved it. It was so fun driving down the road and listening to the exhaust when pulling away from a stop sign
It's so amazing to see classics like this. I'm so glad they switched from the column shifter to the floor shifter but it's amazing to see the progression. Even in the 50's & 60's there was a car scene! My grandpa loves to tell me about his days as a teenager with a lowered car (forgot the model) and having sought after wheels and all kinds of other fun things. This was such a cool review, glad you got the opportunity!
yungtakumi Nope. When the PT Cruiser came out, they were so popular and Chrysler underestimated demand. And that model sold for roughly a decade. Far from being a failure.
Haven't even finished the video but I have to say that the beginning shots were AMAZING. You could really see and hear the theme, it rocks. Keep up the great work David.
I saw one of those last weekend near Pottsville, TN, two-door sedan, barely recognizable from the rear, but unmistakable. The front seat had been reupholstered recently and the green fabric had horse-collars reminiscent of the grille center woven into the cloth. It also had a manual choke knob in the middle of the dash. And they'll pull your man-card if you don't know how to operate an overdrive from that period.
I have a 59 Edsel Corsair,the 2 door model.I put a Ford 302 engine in it,power steering,power brakes,lakeside pipes,custom interior and she is a BEAST!!!Her name is Endora and I LOVE this car more than life🤣She is definitely a head turner
Phenomenal video! The music at the beginning was spot on too! Glad you got to review such an old car. I've been lucky enough to see 2 Edsel's in my life at car shows, but neither were in as good condition as this one.
David, I'm a big fan of the car reviews and vlogs, and have been waiting for a long time to see you review something along these lines and it was awesome. Everyone should try driving an older car like this at least once, it really makes you appreciate the simpler way things used to be. Its an awesome experience I get to enjoy every day when i drive my 73 LeMans, even just to go run errands.
Great review, David! This car brand failed for several reasons, including it's polarizing looks (especially the first year models), it's muddied market placement, and the late 50's recession.
First, I loved the music at the beginning. I used it on one of my first videos. I like your perspective on the Ranger. I am 67 and learned a clutch transmission on a 56 Ford truck. It’s just different. Thanks man.
ThatDudeinBlue, great video man! I like and respect pretty much all types of cars and trucks, but I have a soft spot for the classics. And that is one beautiful Edsel! You were spot on about the characteristics of classics and owning and driving them!
THANK YOU, David, for using that song in the beginning! Srsly, thank you! If you had used EDM or some electronic song I'd be mad. LOL.. Btw, it's amazing you got to drive an Edsel. I was honored when I was able to see one in a museum, couldn't even touch it though. You DROVE it.
I found a pair of almost perfectly preserved Edsel wagon shells like 10 minutes from my house. They're for sale for $1600. The catch? You gotta dig them up outta the guys yard. The original owner parked them under a tree that is now mostly a hill.
Great review! I'm in a New Product Development class and a case I'm reading mentioned the Edsel and that it was a flop, but no explanation why. I'm curious to understand why it was such a failure and your video was a great example for the pros and cons. I felt like I was in the car riding with you. Beautiful car with so much potential, but it needed more development. I enjoyed watching your video and awesome job!
Here's my impression of the Edsel failure a victim of the culture at that time. It didn't help that many Ford Mo Co bigshots hated the car probably for selfish reasons. '58 and '59 Edsels were a sales failure because they didn't sell to the forecast 250,000. Actually 68,000 were built in 1958; 47,000 in 1959; 2800 in 1960. Most new nameplates today are happy to reach 68,000 the first year, Edsel simply overpromised in a year with a recession economy. Yes, there were start up quality problems and negative publicity mostly related to styling, but Edsel was better looking than critics would admit, and it had very high performance. In retrospect I really like the '58 and '59 Edsel styling and I'm a Chevy guy. Some fuss was made over the name choice, "Edsel" didn't really resonate with the public ear. I wish Ford Mo Co would have spent some advertising $$$ educating the public about Edsel Ford, Henry's only son and wearing the name Edsel with pride. 1960 was another matter, in my opinion the Edsel that year was suicided, the stylists should have been slapped for that botched design.
I read the entire history of the Edsel. I loved how some of them came with push bottom shifting. What killed this car was they built it during the Great Depression. Over all I think the Edsel is a nice collectors car.
My freind Blake is actually restoring one right now. Hes had the car since we were in high school and man that was the most stand out car there. Were 21 now and hes doing a full body restoration on it.
Too cool! No seat belts, funky column shift, vague steering, metal interior and no brakes. Ahhhh the good old days...LOL...LOL The first time I drove a column shift truck, back in 1977, I had no idea what I was doing. I just managed to go get coffee and make it back...LOL...LOL Great video bringing us a car from a whole different era...thanks!
My dad had a 64 mercury comet for a while and I completely agree with your review. 2 speed auto took forever to shift, car was slow, hard to turn, even with a massive diameter steering wheel, and had virtually no brakes. Even compared to my 81 Camaro, and my friends 65 mustang, the mercury felt so unrefined. It did have tons of character though which I really enjoyed.
Never fail to amaze me with awesome and unique videos and content You really pick like the perfect music for the car Create this like atmosphere for every car with Every came rica angle and not of the song you choose Simply amazing Subscriber for life lol
But...Skylines are still illegal? Cop: do you know why I pulled you over? Edsel owner: no.. Cop: you don't have your seatbelt on. Edsel: 'mmurica.. Cop: have a nice day.
My 68 GMC has a 3 on the tree, and boy was that a learning experience. Nobody around to teach me. just had to pull around the shifter until the truck moved. Now I can basically bang shift the thing. Also no sycnros. Double clutching like you should.
A buddy of mine loves old caddies, so I've driven my fair share of land yachts and the first time driving 3 on the tree is quite the experience haha. Great vid.
I love edsels for the exact reason you said. "you never see them" despite them being a big flop they actually had some pretty cool features about them in their time
Back in the 1950s, some towns still didn't have many paved roads. So the cars of the day were also offroad cars, at least a little bit. The gear shifters are set up to make easier the "rocking" the car back-and-forth to get out of potholes, or soft spots from being parked for a while.
My brother just bought an identical Ranger to this. We plan to drive it in the 24 Hours of LeMons road rally in August. It should be a blast. Fortunately, the car is trashed enough that we don't have to worry about its 'valuable collector's item' status. It would have been a $25 car in 1970.
Once the automotive writers criticized it's styling and "horse collar grille", it was pretty much doomed, it's build quality wasn't any worse than it's Ford and Mercury stable mates, but it's too polarizing styling is what sealed it's fate.
I have a 1959 Edsel Ranger! Mine is a 4 door hardtop with a 292 cubic inch engine with a 2 speed automatic transmission. I love the old car and it gets a lot of looks. It is just an old classic.
Obviously he never drove a column shifter before but I'm surprised he makes such a point about the shift pattern. It makes eminent sense . . . you have 2nd and 3rd on the back because its so much more convenient to have reverse on the same side as 1st since you only have to move the shifter back and forth when parking.
I'm guessing the older guy in some of the outside scenes is the owner? If so, then he is badass for offering his car for this and even for watching your videos.
Wow. Late to the party on this video lol. My great grandpa LOVED this car when he bought it new back in the 60s. Currently looking to restore it to it's former glory in the next few years.
The one thing about the edsel that people don't realize is that it was the platform that ford developed the FE (Ford-Edsel) big block for which eventually went on to power the high end of the popular mustang, station wagons, luxury sedans, coupes (t-bird), pickups, and industrial applications. In reality the car may have flopped but the power train was immensely successful. I'm used to seeing vehicles like this. I drive a 1967 C20 chevy every day and when drum brakes are well adjusted and not worn they perform quite well... they just feel odd when your used to power brakes, they feel a lot like air brakes if you have driven a semi. On a note I love seeing peoples reactions of the cars of yesterday. btw seat belts won't save you from the non-collapsible steering column that would impale your chest in a crash :)
Great video i just bought a 59 edsel was barn kept 18 years then garage kept the rest only 34k but mine has a primitive form of power steering i believe, can't wait to get it home
For all the other guys like David who've never seen this kind of shifter before, now every time you hear an old guy say "3 on the tree" you know what they're talking about. Those old transmissions were actually very common for many years. Strange, but effective.
Man I've always loved Edsels, the oldest cars I've driven were a couple of mostly restored 55 and 56 Chevy bel airs. Very cool to feel like you're time traveling.
Classic cars are the bomb. My dad has a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis, which is the first classic car he's had since I was born. It got me on the classic car thing and I really like those classic cars that aren't very popular or different, for example the Edsel. Just don't hate on the classics, man.
The intro was perfect... I drove a Friends 1968 Fastback Mustang that had drum brakes and took forever to stop also.
I don't care what people say, these cars are awesome.
Oh.my.gosh.
No brakes.
Be careful bro
Are you coming to the ice cream cruise in Nebraska? A lot of nice cars gonna be here 😉
hey you should do a review of a 2004 Acura tsx. I'm looking for a good first car and i don't know if it is a good first car. Thanks
David perez Omaha represent!

V4 Garage it was released during a recession, with serious problems. For instance, many were shipped out with missing and missaligned pieces, due to cross manufacturing with mercury
If the car was properly built, it would have been awesome. Why did they "rush it" by making parts misallign? Just build it patiently and slowly..
V4 Garage you should watch rcr's newest video.
they actually started planning the Edsel in 1949, taking a break for the Korean war but it wasn't rushed.
the edsel is the only classic id buy. I've loved it since I found out what it was in 2011
It brings a smile to my face to see old cars like this on your channel!
Love the throwback music and grainey film edits on this one...That steering wheel is huge!!! Awesome vid man!
What is the name of the song
Most Edsels had automatic transmissions, so your stick shift is rather rare.
The teletouch was not available on the '59 models; both the manual and the automatics that year were column stick-shift. Do you have any numbers on how many manuals and automatics were sold?

200hp? wow I was expecting you to say 120hp. I mean a 307 from 68 and 73 were making 115 hp minimum, impressive I might say.
The 352 in my 66 f100 makes around 200 so the number fits
It had 200hp out the factory but now it's like 100hp I bet.
power numbers went down in the 70s thanks to the environmental regulations so it should actually make decent power being a '59
This was emissions free, pre-unleaded, and Edsel was intended to be a step above Ford so I imagine it may well have run a slightly hotter carb from the factory as opposed to its Ford equivalent. So that number seems on the level.
TheCowGoesMoo o 1971 was the first year of emission control so before then but after around 64 i would say is when these cars made a shit ton of torque and hp!
That's very cool that you got to cruise around in a classic like this one. Mad respect to you for appreciating the simplicity and little quirks.
The steering wheel is huge to give you leverage to steer... I love cars from the 50s gosh the 50s were the most beautiful decade for cars they were all just gorgeous
David, that was by far the best intro scene and music selection you have done to date. Keep it up buddy!
I have one of these 59 Edsel almost identical to the one he's driving 44000 original miles and it is a blast to drive
My father had an Edsel back in the day. He said it was one of the best cars he ever had. Twenty-five years ahead of his time, he said. Eventually he gave in to peer pressure and traded it in for a Fairlane, which he said couldn't compare to the Edsel.

whiskersandmascara From what I've heard, the car scene in the 50's and 60's was even better than the current car scene.
pretty sure the biggest failure is the pt cruiser
But it sold
NSX's didn't sell well.
yungtakumi Nope. When the PT Cruiser came out, they were so popular and Chrysler underestimated demand. And that model sold for roughly a decade. Far from being a failure.
Namie Newell NSX was never meant to be a high-production model. It was a low volume sports car.
Fiat Multipla!
Haven't even finished the video but I have to say that the beginning shots were AMAZING. You could really see and hear the theme, it rocks. Keep up the great work David.
3 in the tree is what separates the men from the boys
I saw one of those last weekend near Pottsville, TN, two-door sedan, barely recognizable from the rear, but unmistakable. The front seat had been reupholstered recently and the green fabric had horse-collars reminiscent of the grille center woven into the cloth. It also had a manual choke knob in the middle of the dash.
And they'll pull your man-card if you don't know how to operate an overdrive from that period.
I know how to drive a Three on the Tree.
On old cars with drum brakes you usually need to pump the brakes to build pressure in the lines
That's not what was happening. Drum brakes were self-adjusting. They did it every time you backed up and then braked.
I have a 59 Edsel Corsair,the 2 door model.I put a Ford 302 engine in it,power steering,power brakes,lakeside pipes,custom interior and she is a BEAST!!!Her name is Endora and I LOVE this car more than life🤣She is definitely a head turner

I don't know your music selection process but damn, it is ALWAYS so accurate for the car. Awesome video as always
you always choose the best music for the specific car, great review as always!
Great review, David!
This car brand failed for several reasons, including it's polarizing looks (especially the first year models), it's muddied market placement, and the late 50's recession.

Wow this channel just gets better and better. ☺👍
I just bought a 58 Fairlane, it has all the same qualities. The older cars of the 50s were truly works of art.
I read the entire history of the Edsel. I loved how some of them came with push bottom shifting. What killed this car was they built it during the Great Depression. Over all I think the Edsel is a nice collectors car.
The great depression was in the thirties not the fifties.
this was my brothers first car in highschool back in 2010 , it was also pink... pure gold
My freind Blake is actually restoring one right now. Hes had the car since we were in high school and man that was the most stand out car there. Were 21 now and hes doing a full body restoration on it.
love the intro and music sick. especially the black and white classic bit as the music goes crazy. keep it up David
Super cool review, and love the old-timer song at the start to match the car haha!!! Also, really gladd u showed us the gear-shifting "process" LOL!
Too cool! No seat belts, funky column shift, vague steering, metal interior and no brakes.
Ahhhh the good old days...LOL...LOL

But...Skylines are still illegal?
Cop: do you know why I pulled you over?
Edsel owner: no..
Cop: you don't have your seatbelt on.
Edsel: 'mmurica..
Cop: have a nice day.
Angel Cruz Actually, I know the law in Colorado is that if the car wasn't factory equipped with seat belts, you can legally drive it on the road.
ThatSundayDriver ohh makes sense.. Lol
Pre 1965 cars or trucks, idk i forgot (or is it 68?) with no seatbelts are legal.
I wanna say it's '68...
After 1966 all cars sold in the US had to have seat belts but it wasn't mandatory to were them
My 68 GMC has a 3 on the tree, and boy was that a learning experience. Nobody around to teach me. just had to pull around the shifter until the truck moved. Now I can basically bang shift the thing. Also no sycnros. Double clutching like you should.
Holy crap, what are you doing with my Grandma's ride?! She's been looking all over for it! Haha, just kidding, awesome review David as usual.
I love how david reviews other kinds of cars.
A buddy of mine loves old caddies, so I've driven my fair share of land yachts and the first time driving 3 on the tree is quite the experience haha. Great vid.
Perfect song for the intro. Suits the car well!
I love edsels for the exact reason you said. "you never see them" despite them being a big flop they actually had some pretty cool features about them in their time

Oh man, that's a hell of a head turner :) The column shift is pretty much like normal manual turned sideways, well at least when it's a 4-speed.
God I love ProleteR's music. You should use more of it.
Same. It was perfect for the thunderbird as well.
That was actually the first time I heard ProleteR and I was hooked from that point on. And you're right April showers fit the thunderbird so well.
collin paine I was about to ask who made the song, while i was listening to april showers. Great Music
Great review with a great car!
It looked like you had a lot of fun wrestling with that old madam :-)
That song is perfect David. I wish I could give you 1000 thumbs up
Wow. Late to the party on this video lol. My great grandpa LOVED this car when he bought it new back in the 60s. Currently looking to restore it to it's former glory in the next few years.
a big bravo!you find this car in such a perfect condition... i think this was pretty dificult...
Car looks boss for its age. That column shift looks like a lot of hassle, but I can see where it can be fun. Another great review. Keep'em rolling.
Thank you!
David please do some more classic car reviews. I liked watching this video because the ranger is so different to the cars we drive in today.;););)
Such an awesome intro!!!! Nice video David!!
I love my 66 c10 with the same transmission as that Edsel, makes me feel unique since not much people know it even exists lol
Great video i just bought a 59 edsel was barn kept 18 years then garage kept the rest only 34k but mine has a primitive form of power steering i believe, can't wait to get it home
congrats on your channel, man. you're getting up there!
great song choice for the intro. loved it! another great review :) keep it up!
your vids get better and better, good song pic too
Thankfully my 59 Corsair has power steering.
❤❤❤ America missed this one..The Ford Edsel is gorgeous.Would love to own one..
For all the other guys like David who've never seen this kind of shifter before, now every time you hear an old guy say "3 on the tree" you know what they're talking about. Those old transmissions were actually very common for many years. Strange, but effective.
Ahh That's awesome! It reminds me of my grandad's 1964 Ford Galaxie 500, which is an amazing experience to drive.
Man I've always loved Edsels, the oldest cars I've driven were a couple of mostly restored 55 and 56 Chevy bel airs. Very cool to feel like you're time traveling.
We just found a 58 Edsel Corsair in an old barn. Hooked a battery up to it and the lights and horn work😂
Great video btw. Cool Intro they just keep getting better
I used to have a '59 Edsel Ranger, but mine had a 312, automatic and power steering :) No radio though.
Classic cars are the bomb. My dad has a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis, which is the first classic car he's had since I was born. It got me on the classic car thing and I really like those classic cars that aren't very popular or different, for example the Edsel. Just don't hate on the classics, man.
The song in this video
Nice meeting you at I.A this past weekend
