They exploded onto the pop scene in 1974 and they're still blowing our minds 47 years on. The most creative, honest, driven band in the world. Giants among pigmies.

At last. I'm 65 years old and have been infatuated by these guys for a long time. Whenever I talk to friends and family about them I am generally greeted with blank stares. I can now point them to this doco. Thanks
I found them on accident through Spotify a year or two ago (around age 25) they were showing me music related to “Slade”, I immediately checked who the artist was and added them to my playlists. Very feel good music. Thanks Spotify! (No, I don’t work for/represent them)

But as soon as the film started and I saw Ron, I knew. I'm a fan now... Frickin LOVE these guys and it saddens me that I only just "discovered" them yesterday... But as they say, better late than never. Much love to the Mael Bros! A new fan for life!
I'm 50 years old and a musician and until today I thought I knew a lot, like a lot a lot, about obscure music. I feel ashamed, humbled, and cannot wait to see this. This is gonna be awesome.
I saw FFS in London a few years ago. I went on my own bc none of my friends like Sparks. It was one of the most fun gigs I have ever been to. The bands were having a blast, the fans went completely nuts. Everyone was jumping around with massive smiles on their faces. The kindest, most joyous crowd I can remember. I never once felt alone.

Okay, so i randomly got recommended this trailer, never having heard of these guys, got a couple of people to go to a theater to watch it because it looked very interesting, and, yes, the documentary and the Sparks group was weird, outstanding, and funny to the moon and back. And of course, Edgar Wright's love for the group shines throughout the documentary. Would recommend to anyone who has a taste in any music
I never thought that a duo like SPARK, at my age(56), would hook me to their music, style and (I have no adjectives to describe) all their works (some of them I had heard without knowing who they were). Conclusion, never think that you have heard everything, one day you discover what you have missed to enjoy. Greg
A SPARKS documentary by EDGAR WRIGHT! I might just die of excitement. Already a huge fan of Edgar's, and what you might call a "half-finished" Sparks fan... I lost a good friend to cancer in 2014. He was only 34, an absolutely lovely guy, and was a massive Sparks fan. I'm 56 now, so I remember This Town on TotP in the 1970s, but Pete gave me a glimpse of how much deeper the rabbit hole goes. I've still explored only some of it. I'll watch this film and remember my friend Pete, and perhaps I should spend more time exploring this unique and iconic band as well.
Yup, an incredible band who are still, amazingly, a cult. All the more for us. What an astonishing, creative output over the years, and they keep on topping it. Can’t wait for this treat in the summer.
I must have been one of the first guys in my hometown of Bochum, Germany to have followed the Sparks. That was in 1972/73/74 - most of my friends looked at me sideways when I mentioned them as my favorite band .... until they heard their first three albums (Sparks, Kimono my House and Propaganda) - then they understood... Greatest lyrics of their time with quirky social observation their strength, plus simply excellent music and arrangement
I have followed the career of those guys for over 35 years now got everything they have done, seen them on 3 occassions. The best live show i have seen, these guys are simply superb and are hugely underrated...especially considering the dross that passes as music and talent today...long live sparks.
I'm 58 and grown up and got older alongside these two fellas, was teased as a youngster for liking them but can honestly now look back and be proud i stuck with them and glad they are still going. Looking forward to seeing this film very much... Will sit in the darkened theatre.... And i ain't gonna leave!
One of my favorite parts was the one guy who was like “there’s no such thing as gate keepers to Sparks, everyone is welcome and there is so much more.”
Back in the UK in the 70s, the two scariest things on TV were when the Daleks appeared on Dr Who, and when Ron Mael appeared on Top of the Pops. Both events had me hiding behind the couch in terror.
Their debut on "Top of the Pops" in 1974 doing "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us" is legendary. Everyone at school the next day was saying "Did you see that band? - I swear it was Adolf Hitler!"
I got to watch it as part of Hot Docs in Canada last week, and I can say with confidence that it has made me into a new fan. In fact, I watched it four times. It is such a fun doc, you can see Edgar Wright’s love for the band ooze from the screen.
I got to see the world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It’s easily one of the best movies of the year (so far). I can’t wait to rewatch it!
I am stoked to see this!!!! EDIT: I’ve been a fan since Number 1 in Heaven! What’s even stranger, is that I found that record in a bin at a Kmart in 1980! Lol! Love you guys! Such a varied, intelligent and humorous band Sparks are!!!
Ron and Russell are like great painters of the past we won't really know how good they were till they are long gone and people will still be copying them and being influenced in years to come I still remember buying kimono my house it wasn't the sound it was the feeling it gave me when I blasted it out in my bedroom I just new then all them years ago there were something special thanks guys from Scotland
Been hypnotised by them since I was about 10 years old in the mid-70s. I have vivid memories of drawing dinosaurs while listening to Propaganda; one of my first ever albums. No other band has ever come close.
For those of us that are out here, in California, and grew up in the 80's, we can all thank KROQ, because these guys were on heavy rotation on that station, back then. 😀

This movie introduced me to Sparks. Their work is pretty much the only music I've been listening to in the car since- just one gem after another. Thanks, Edgar Wright!
My mother was a huge Sparks fan and owns almost all of their classic 70s records apart from "Kimono My House".... Had to complete it for her. Also, she has every Patti Smith album ever released on vinyl. Apart from "Horses".........
Epic and congratulations- Sparks were the first 80s band starting in 1970, ie Devo, Cars, etc. Thanks for Todd Rundgren and Sparks for never giving up and making the first recording - that was the start of New 👋 Wave
I'm Italian - admit my ignorance, until yesterday. I did not know them. But now that I do know them, they are on my playlist! 💙I was born in the last days of ‘78, grew up in the “80s, progressive rock was already a discovery for me at the end of 90s. I can say that I fell in love with this band! Long live Sparkle you are in my personal pantheon of Gods! Thank you for playing you are really great.💙
Best band in the world. Always have been. This is not an opinion. You need to be smart to appreciate Sparks - and that’s why they’ve never been massive.
great doc. heard them first on the radio in 1974 as a 10 year old kid and loved them from the first note. then later seeing them play mickey mouse on SNL in 1982 cemented my love of them. really, they are up there with the beatles or kraftwerk in terms of influence on multiple genres of music. as everyone notes, it's the high quality of the songwriting combined with their unusual wit and humor.
I've never been so happy because of a band before! Thank you very very very....much for bringing so much joy into my life! 💖 Can't wait to watch the whole film, hopefully it'll come to Germany very soon! Love you and this trailer 💖🥰
I've been a fan since the first record in 74 got all25 albums and another other things ime a sparks addict your all my friends who love them like me lol 😆 🎶 Celia
I had never heard of them but their music I think is out there genius, maybe 20 years too early though, before their time as they say, are they having fun or are they messing with our minds who knows. Shout out to their brilliant mum bringing them up when dad passed away so young and encouraging their love of music even driving them to concerts that were many many miles away.
I am French, and I love so much the Sparks. They are great !! I'm happy to learn that they will be officially in Cannes with the musical film directed by Leos Carax, which will be released on July 6th; and happy also that a documentary is dedicated to them: release in cinemas on July 28th in France. Let's all go there! ! DON'T MISS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! since the time they deserve to be even more known, recognized
You give me ALL THAT AND MORE THANKS FOR YOUR LOAN! !! In Sparksland is MINE IS YOURS AND YOURS IS MINE! ! It's THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM, you are IRREPLACEABLE! FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN you are goes your own unique WAY THAT'S WHY WANNA SPEND MY LIFE WITH YOU AND YOUR FABULOUS MUSIC! !! Our Music was my FIRST LOVE and it would be the LAST! !!!
saw two of their 21 x 21 concerts at Islington (Kimono my House and No 1 song) in 2008 and the third Gratuitous Sax and Violins at Shepherds Bush Empire love them.
Best thing of the year so far from Sparks ☺ (as well as the news of Ron and Russell working on new music), Sparks has made these past few years since I've been a big fan the best, thank you Ron and thank you Russell 😊
Hello I totally agree with you! ! I am a fan since my childhood in the 90s "My way period " ! But I think since the "Balls album from 2000 the best musically period of their career has begon! !! Every album since that time are colourful pearls! ! They shines in so much diversity especially Lil Beethoven, Hello young lovers, and Hippopotamus! ! Like in the Lyrics of "Change " GOLDEN DAYS HAVED JUST BEGON! !! YOUR MUSIC IS THE COLOURFUL, RAINBOW I'VE EVER SEEN! !!!! Russell and Ron thanks for your wonderful GIFT OF FABULOUS MUSIC! !!!
@@ana_biohazard Have you a special favourite that you especially like? I like especially "Surburban Homeboy, There no such thing as aliens, Perfume, Edith piaf said it better than me! !!!
@@babettewitt3978 It's hard to pick a favorite. Among their recent albums since Balls, I'll say As I Sit Down To Play The Organ At The Notre Dame Cathedral. Ron playing the organ during the song is incredible. Earlier works would be Tryouts For The Human Race or even Slowboat
@@ana_biohazard Ja it is difficult to pick up one song because they have all an unique own magic Charme . I like Slowboat too also Moon over Kentucky of Scheherezade because I like the fairytale oriental flair especially the strings! ! And how find you the Voice of Russell? I find it so amazing that he can still sing especially the high notes! ! In my opinion his voice over the last few years is better than before! !
Back in 1977 I was a part of the Rotoscope Crew working at nights on Star Wars. We had very few cassettes we could play while we worked, but the one that got the most use was Big Beat by the Sparks. Mississippi, Big Boy...that is the soundtrack of my memories of those days.
I love these guys' ability to adapt to whatever style of music is popular at any time. Not to mention the big-name producers they've worked with such as Todd Rundgren, Muff Winwood and Giorgio Moroder. AND Todd and Jane Wiedlin are now on their way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Get ready for your channel to BLOW...I've loved these guys music for so so long... before i even knew they were singing the songs..so many awesome songs, they were ahead of their time AND THAT TIME IS NOW...time to bloooooow up. Enjoy the ride.....again lol. I never did find out what that no1 song all over heaven was..is it still no.1 ?! ;o)
I am totally agree with you! !! This is the greatest love letter from Edgar with Love made! ! Russell and Ron haved had for so an long time DESERVED! !! They haved since 50!!! Years always new and fresh ideas for their music! ! They haved never repeat an style every album of them haved an own Magical Flair every Song is filled with so much LOVE, PASSION, HUMOR, AND AUTHENTICATION. That's really UNIQUE! ! ! ADDITIONAL THEIR WARMHEARTED, SINCERE, GENUINE , CHARACTER! ! And not to forget the basic concept of their music Two Hands one Mouth "Meanful LYRICS and a warm, authentic, lovable VOICE! !! THE SHOW MUST HOPEFULLY FOR A LONG TIME GO ON! !! Love you Russell and Ron! !
Saw the film today and loved it. My brother bought the second and third albums back in the 70s but I never really kept a close eye on them after that although did enjoy the Franz Ferdinand collaboration. It is clear that they have retained the wit and creativity of those early albums throughout their career and are still doing so. Go and see the film if you have the chance - even if you don't know the music it is an eye opener on how to persevere as an artist.
Omg I can’t wait to see this.. I have been a huge fan from age 11! Which was really only a few years ago.. When I’m with you in one of my favourite all time songs. 💜💕
I now understand my mission in life - to build a career in music on a throwaway riff from a Sparks song.
Then, if we can get the Mael brothers to write a book on SAS, the circle will be complete.
@@Laurasiana It’s only fair if they want to write that book around a throwaway code sample from Professional SAS Programming Secrets.
I'll take 2 please

One of the best and most fun shows I’ve ever been to was Sparks in Central Park NYC in 2003. ❤️

FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN you are goes your own unique WAY THAT'S WHY WANNA SPEND MY LIFE WITH YOU AND YOUR FABULOUS MUSIC! !! Our Music was my FIRST LOVE and it would be the LAST! !!!
Very much looking forwards, and behind me, for this.
saw two of their 21 x 21 concerts at Islington (Kimono my House and No 1 song) in 2008 and the third Gratuitous Sax and Violins at Shepherds Bush Empire love them.
Saw six times in the Big Screen in Knoxville and tomorrow is unfortunately it’s last night. Come on out and get Sparked!
Weird Al sent me here.
I love his Sparks style parody, Virus Alert.
Genius respecting genius.
@@babettewitt3978 I agree with you 😊 I enjoy each album, from the beginning to their recent album. They're different and unique ☺
Ron used to be my neighbor. Very cool dude:)
I heard them all this time and I never really knew the whole story. So much to watch...and listen to.
Fantastic! Looking forward to watching this!
Sparks have always existed on a different planet, never belonging to any music scene, just so unique
This trailer for The Sparks looks very Intresting, I may have to see this. The irony of it all, I've never heard of this duo until now.
Fantastic film! Best music doco I've seen in YEARS!
'Kimono My House', I bought this Sparks album in 1974, absolutely brilliant.
I'm so sorry it took a movie to get me to know who you guys are :( Time for you guys to get the recognition you sorely deserve
Agree. Although I may have stumbled upon them and didn’t know it.
I never did find out what that no1 song all over heaven was..is it still no.1 ?!
;o)
Bought Number 1 in heaven as a teenager, mainly because of my interest in synthesizers, but grew to appreciate the whole package that is Sparks.
CANNOT WAIT! These guys are GENIUSES
I listened to Sparks in the 70s, now I'm in my 70s. I guess I was cool then and now.
This guys are out of this world. Amazing documentary, a must see!
This is so long overdue...and Edgar Wright doing it to boot.
THE TIME HAS COME! THANK YOU!
Surprised Debbie Harry/Chris Stein aren’t interviewed also, they would fit it in too
Saw the film today and loved it.
Way way back I got turned on to Sparks I think it was SNL. Early 70s . Long Live Sparks
0:44 Nick Rhodes & John Taylor! I KNEW they would be there!🙌🙌
Been a fan ever since they first appeared on top of the pops.still my favourite band, super talented,Sparks til I die.❤️
Omg I can’t wait to see this.. I have been a huge fan from age 11! Which was really only a few years ago.. When I’m with you in one of my favourite all time songs. 💜💕
Great documentary! 🙏
