Theme Song by Hello Control: bit.ly/hellocon...
We just saw a guy who introduces us to another guy who introduces us to yet another guy who introduces us to one of his scenes.
Nolan would be proud.
Daniel Ortega, I just read a comment from a guy who notes that we just saw a guy who introduces us to another guy who introduces us to yet another guy who introduces us to one of his scenes.
I have no idea who Nolan us.
@@bakedutah8411 Christopher Nolan made the dark knight trilogy, memento, insomnia, prestige, inception, intersetellar, doodlebug
Party Penguin, ahh; _that_ Nolan. Doi! 😬
He's the man sitting next to the man that's sitting next to the man that's sitting next to the man.

Ryan: "so today we have Adam to tell us about cutting"
Adam: "so first we're gonna watch Hitchcock tell us about cutting"
Hitchcock: "So lets take a look at the shower scene from Psycho"
Tutorialception
JRinne Films assemblyyyy
JRinne Films Underrated comment
JRinne Films wow
Hitchcock: "You couldn't just take the camera and show a nude women stabbed to death"
Game of Thrones: "Hold my beer"
NickysChannel13 LOL
at least it was done in an impressionistic way just like he said
1:34 - 11:15 : normal talking dude
11:16 : ''Ifyoublnfilmakrantonverdmaindotkom..'' : Ryan Connolly
Surprisingly the auto subtitles are very accurate
I love the discussion of psycho, to use the audience's brains as another camera.
Excellent presentation. Clearly presented with an eye to expanding on what the 2 best experts on editing say. My only note would be to clarify that Walter Murch was presenting a top ten list for each single cut. The most important thing to consider at the cut point is number one. If any of the others are included all the better.
Read "in the blink of an eye" if you're interested in editing. Funny enough I always tried to find that book since film school. Never found it, but never made the effort to order it online or anything. That was 2002, 2016 I found it at a local chapters (I checked almost overtime I was there) FINALLY got it. Now in the time between I started to look for the book to when I found the book I was working as an editor on various different genres. Advertising, event, TV, documentary and film. Reading the book after having practiced the craft for way more time than when I was fresh in school really helped me understand the core concepts of this book on a 3D level. You know that level where you're just like "ya that's neat" but I can actually confirm the existence of these rules and the practice of say "thinking some shot on initial screening is useless - only to find out that later in the editing process that shot is exactly what the scene needs"...Anyway i'm rambling, but I love talking shop (editing specifically) so when I see something as detailed and high level as this vs "how to do a palm to camera lens transition in premiere" I tend to yak a bit more than i should in the comments ;)
I do enjoy your yakking
Good Stuff - It makes you think of how artistic film making has become. Once rules are made and understood you can then break them.
This is probably the best episode this year. Thanks Ryan.
it would be awesome if you guys challenged yoursleves to make a sketch with completley free stuff (software sounds ext.)
Captain Cheesecake great idea
Captain Cheesecake I bet you if they did, they'd use a $5000 camera
nano.on.piano.official perhaps but they have said it over and over you dont need to worry about your gear per say but worry about your story telling. They did an episode with an iphone btw
SWADE Productions yeah, I saw that. I suppose you're correct.
THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN!!!
Imagine Alfred Hitchcock as a RUclipsr today
it will be legend.
And he just does makeup tutorials
he would run away from bunch of youtubers trying to be entertaining. In other words he would stay very much away from the internet because seeing image getting overused would make him sick.
he'd start beef with jake paul
I'd watch it!
Watching a video of a guy showing a video of a guy showing a video of Hitchcock teaching editing through one of his movies.
HeSmile lol
the future of education
your profile picture fits perfectly with the comment
David Blagojević no
May blessings shine upon you, just as you have blessed others. Have a wonderful Christmas!
Should be titled, Walter Murch's 6 rules of editing. Because that was the whole video.
Great stuff! Enjoyed the 6 items and have written them down.
+Marty Turner Right on! Glad it helped. :)
That bear suit video is real and MIND BLOWING. If you are thinking "I would have seen the bear" ... you probably would not have seen the bear. It's truly an unbelievable experience.
I would keep the "space dogs" and get rid of the "boy growing up".
new plot. boy grows up wanting to be a space dog and is then kidnapped by space dogs and boy realizes being a boy dreaming of being a space dog is better than actually being a space dog.
Excellent film information so much, I had to watch it three times! Thanks!
Our Favorite RUclips channel 😍
Thanks!
Film Riot thanks for saying thanks. Over excited on your reply. 😅😇
The Filmage Agency same there great, but I think there's a pretty cool new start up channel about creating
Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "videography tips youtube" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Piyason Videographic Ventures - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got great results with it.
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Yeah this was basically a 13 minute version of my semester long editing course lol
really helpful, me and my friend are going to make a post-apocalyptic short film !
Inception moment: film riot talks about editing by going to professor talking about editing by going to vintage clip of Alfred Hitchcock talking about editing
Hitchcock was so very interesting. His interpretation of film edits is elequent to say the least. I love how he says "we can't just show a naked woman being stabbed to death in the shower". However, nowadays that's exactly what filmmakers show.
DigiFootage Channel nah, not really. Modern horror would just try the same thing but fail badly. The showing of what happens is more french extremism style imo
Could you make a video about information about independent movies and how to get them in theaters? This would be very helpful.
This Guy Edits is a good channel if you want more good editing education.
I disagree with him at 5:47, he says that if you go against the vibe that has been established in the scene or in the film itself, that is bad. I disagree with this because this affect (going against the tone) can be used in comedic ways. Sudden tone changes in scenes will almost always result in a laugh, if done right of course.
RED SHIRTS thats true but usually they dont use cinematic style in comedic films
That is true
Leave the space dogs in. Otherwise that film sounds a bit dull.
If anything, it needs more space dogs.
Team space dogs
Even in 2021! This video is still helpful!! 🎥🎬
When u guys do episodes like this it reminds me of school days when the substitute teacher would just come and pop in a tape. Good stuff tho. MZed looks legit
I would be very happy to make a video about that - "How to build a computer for video editing" , as soon as possible.... PLEASEE
Whoa!! I was already enjoying the video but then Ryan mentioned CinemaSound and I did a whole double take omg. I helped film a bunch of Mark Edward Lewis's stuff when he was in Texas. You guys, I learned so much just from the stuff I was there for and MEL is a great dude, I highly recommend the course
This is very good. I agree when he basically goes against the word rule in filmmaking
Amazing, the hitchcock's words are emotional. Thanks you So much. Hello From Argentina.
The MZed plug uses the same stock music as an Audi radio spot running here (Toronto) right now.
As for the montage / impression perspective, if something is larger than life then how can life possibly convey it? The imagination is required
You mean editing isn't just cutting out the slates!??!?! ;) JK I know it's not, editing tv/doc/films for 15 years and that's the general job description from quite a few in the industry which baffles me. Editing being the final re-write of any film is a highly creative and complicated roll. There's reasons big directors have their "go to editors" ... short hand and creative simpatico/problem solving is essential...cause lets be honest, nothing ends up on the screen as it was written or in some cases shot.
Great content Film Riot...genuine and honest/informative.
thank you for sharing Ryan
Much needed video. Thanks Film Riot!!!
+SWADE Productions 🙌🏻
This was the first time I watched a complete ad, at first I thought it’s off the topic, then I noticed I was watching your advertisement 😂 on your video.
Walter Murch lists those editing techniques in the order of priority and less as rules. He himself says as they get lower and lower on the list, the 'rules' above them are more important. So Adam saying only the first one is important 'according to him' does not even make sense.
Film Riot is our Digital University .always happy to see your Videos these are awesome Boss.
Thank you so much, this is so helpful for us.. i am so grateful to you, keep inspiring us..
I've been watching you guys for 4 years
I've been watching them for 20 years just saying
So great, keep that spirit of bring new things
My high school psychology teacher showed us the ball video and I didn't see the bear the first time. It's pretty cool
ive always wondered how they shot one of those shots in the shower scene. the shot where the camera is pointing straight up the shower. if you were to do this without anything, you'll end up with water drops on the lens. anyone got any ideas on how they did it?
camera covered in transparent protective material
Yooo... as soon as i saw that scene from psycho, you got my like.. kudos..
thank you
Your beard grows really fast in this video.
Invenator? Man i really can't hear what you say in that advert, i mean it doesn't matter it's an advert but it bugs me. Useful video :)
It was God plan subscribing to this channel.
Fuck just about when i was going to sleep...
Arthur Syval same

TheMr Manav looool
This channel has really helped me
+Black Robot Films So glad to hear that!
same here :D
Did you film your segment on the C200? Your vids are looking incredible these days; pitch perfect colour grading too.
Damn, that's two weeks BEFORE I'm gonna be in Texas.
Thank you for sharing
Great stuff. Hitchcock's presentation was kinda boring, but his message was great. Impressionistic approach. Love that. The 6 editing tips were also cool. Sometimes we get so caught up in putting in all shots we think are necessary without thinking of how it ties in with the emotion and story we want to deliver. Have to kill off ya babies sometimes, as he mentions :)
Interesting tips really made me think thank you!
Thanks for your videos! Saludos desde Colombia. Do you have any video of how is the proces of micing on the set?
thank you sir Ryan
Can we talk about experimental films next?
His Walter Murch impression is pretty on point lol
I'm trying to apply these lessons to my vlogs.
Why is cinematic editing any different then anything else?
Its not cinematic editing vs uncinematic editing as a style choice. When you do uncinematic editing, your editing is not deliberate.
Inside cinematic editing you can choose between different styles, for example choppy (draw attention to a cut, (documentary style)) or go with the flow (hide the cut, (matchcuts, cut on action)) but it always need to be a conscious decision to help tell the audience what they need to know.
Because there many types of videos people make that do not require much thought. For example, vlogging. You would not want to edit a movie the same way you edit a vlog. That's just one example of non-cinematic editing.
*than
Cinematic editing is in head editing before the actual shoot. Watch Hitchcocks "Rope". Documentary editing is using what you've got to make it look good and tell the story.
In short, d.e. is more about what you see and c.e. is more about what you not see.
DobeyGraphics minimal camera movement and stronger emotion through the 5 senses.
This helped a lot with my video game cinematics! Thanks.
How does a cut support an emotion or vibe? The other 5 rules are easy to understand but a cut that supporting viewers' emotion, how is this evaluated? By making a cut now or later, by changing a shot from here to there, how would editing support or say ruin an emotion atmosphere?
Ryan! Do a professional diy softbox (without cardboards)....tq
Thanks for the info guys!
I love film and I just shot my first video, I would love to know what you guys think of it!
for a second there I forgot it was a film riot video, and the sponsor part surprised me I was like, why is Ryan here? xD
Kindly teach us about right music usage in video in right movement in video
I LOVE THIS!!!!!
"And as I Say," 🖤💛🖤 Hitchcock
Damn.. love dis channel
2:15 Assembly. Isn’t that what the French term has always been? Isn’t that what Premiere Pro calls it?

Hearing Hitchcock speak is awesome.
All of this is so very related to magic. It is crazy.

E&Entertainment The evils
If you've followed film riot for a long time and finally subscribe to domain.com, how bad would it be if you forgot to type in the coupon code filmriot?
Would be better if there’re some visual examples too following what has been just said
Aye aye captain hook
I've been considering Domain.com for quite a while now, and I need a website up and running very soon.
In your honest opinion, what makes Domain.com better than SquareSpace, Wix, BlueHost, etc? (Yes I'm talking about those sites' PAID services)
so real ❤
I'm a big fan of violent movies too!
Walter Murch's* 6 Rules for Cinema Editing
Amazing
would that make it a CLOCKODILE?
Hi
Can u please explain the data management for film and how data while to transcoded and encoded without lossing any resolution
Nice one, did i just watch a video with in a video within a video?
good dude
Why can't they just put "Walter Murch: Six Rules of Editing" in the title description. If anyone is interested there is more to it like character development. Read the Blink of an Eye.
In spanish is called “montage”.
Good stuff
