1:57 Right away, I absolutely noticed a difference when you kicked over from the TS9 to the OD-9. The OD-9 has a tiny bit more gain to it, and the saturation sounds smoother to my ears. I’m happy for this because I have the OD-9; and I play metal. I want smooth saturation, and the additional gain is nice to have if needed. 🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
Wow great video ! I have played guitar and sought my perfect sound for about 35 years. I own both a Ibanez TS9DX and the Maxon OD808 pedals. Based on sound alone the Maxon 808 has a more tube like overdrive, with a more open response while maintaining a tight low end, and warm mid and treble section. Now the TS9DX set to TS9 to be as fair as possible (there is no 8089 setting on the DX). The TS9 setting while a great pedal doesn’t really have that tube OD feel the Maxon has. If I went into the “+” or, “Hot” setting the TS9DX is a little better at driving a warmer tone. It’s all preference at the end of the day, there is no right or, wrong answers…. So just rock on 🤘🏽 Btw I’m using 2 amps a Mesa Triple rectifier on the high gain red channel. The other is a Synergy SYN2 with the Diezel VH4 and Bogner Übershall modules set to my preference without the OD pedals.
Thanks for watching man! And I agree. No wrong answers. Lots of people are so opinionated and love to say something is right or wrong. At the end of the day it’s all subjective. If you like something then you like it. That’s all that matters.
Don't get me wrong, I love my OD808; I even plan on getting the Earthquaker modded one....but that damn Fortin-OD9 is the bawls. Cannot wait for more to appear out in the wild.
Ya that Fortin OD9 is insane. I was lucky enough to get one of the first 100 signed by Mike. It still blows me away by how aggressive it is compared to any other OD. The used market pricing is a little crazy for them right now.
I have the maxon od808x and i think it might have a bit more push than the normal tube screamers but its hard to tell. I'm actually shocked how the sd1 doesnt get enough love cause i think it actually does a bit better as a boost than the tube screamers. Great video as always
Thanks for watching and sticking with me! I've got to get my hands on an OD808X, it's one of the next ones on my list because I have heard good things about it. SD1 is also a classic.
Hey Scott! Just discovered your Channel, great content! Subbed! You’ve got this John Browne thing going on & I dig that! 🤘🏼😎🎸 ...looking forward to future videos.
In my opinion I didn't like any of them for metal type tones, sounded sterile and thin even with headphones. I honestly like the classic use of them with low to medium output single coil or humbuckers, pedal level just above unity gain, drive very low and tone to preference going into slight to moderate gain amp for that "classic tone" they're so well known for. Just my two cents.
@piedpeter1 I don't feel like this is a great representation of what an overdrive does for metal, especially for lower tunings. I can see certain amps maybe not needing one, but the 5150 / 6505 does benefit from an OD. If my distortion is on (which is 99% of the time with a 6505) my OD is also on.
I'd take an old (throughh hole component - for fixability and modding reasons) SD-1 over any screamer personally, tube screamers clip to soft, and I'm addicted to having just slightly more edge / bite to the gain.
Hello, I'm interrested in the Maxon VOP9, it seems to be like the OD9 but with a litle more bass. It seems Great for solos, and bluesy tones but... would you recommend more the OD9 for boosting a hi gain amp and play fast riffs ? Because I think, maybe (?) if the OD9 is tighter and cuts more lows the tone would be sharper and more precise... WHat do you think ? thx
Hey, it really depends on your set up and your tuning too. Tube screamer style pedals are great all around, but there are some other pedals out there that will cut low end and tighten up better than TS style pedals (especially if you are turning very low) - things like a Fortin 33/Grind/Blade or a Precision Drive might get you closer to where you'd want to be compared to a TS pedal.
@@ScottBynoe thx for your advice and videos. Obviously since I play mainly Metal I look for the perfomance in the cutting edge, but I also love a dynamic punchy clear sound slightly dirty. So I would like to test several pedals in different configurations. By the way, do you know the VS Audio Royal Flush? In blues it seems to sound excellent.
All the same? All different? You decided.

I prefer that green one
How about that, me too! 🤣🤣
2:23 HOLY CRAP. The Fortin almost gave me a flashback to that god-forsaken Boss Metal Zone hiss!

Great video, the riffing is so damn on point
Thanks man, I appreciate it
Hi Scott. Great videos. Great work on your channel.
Glad you dig the videos, thank you for watching and for your kind words. Cheers!

I could tell very little difference until the Fortin moded.

I prefer the Maxon OD808 for that amp...just a bit smoother.
OD808 is one of my all time favs. Just gets the job done every time.

Thanks Mark, I really appreciate that! Thanks for the sub, have an awesome weekend!

I wish the boss sd1 had a clone.
The first two sound very similar. The third one sounds a little different and the last one sounds a little more different

That Fortin modded OD-9 sounds like a Boss! Lol!
At "clean channel" i swap video immediatly 😆
E... Where is clean?
Boost shoutout? I'm in!
The fortin sounds more like a distortion pedal 😁
Great video, Scotty! 🤘🏽😜
C'mon people, we're close to 1K!!!
Thanks man!! And I agree, that Fortin is so aggressive and high gain it's pretty much a distortion pedal.
Good video caffeine guy keep that energy
Haha thanks. I drink less coffee than you would think! Cheers!
Ts9 for me the original one
The two in the middle sound identical. The Fortin is in its own deal and the Ibanez is just less harsh..
That's a good assessment, I agree with that for the most part. The Ibanez definitely is slightly darker.
@@ScottBynoe At the end of the day tho, I don't give a shit 😉 great video, man!
@@charlesmccannon9280 haha, I'm sort of in that boat too, but I figured I had all these green pedals laying around...why not?
@@ScottBynoe Shit yeah, man! I look forward to more!
An then you find a cheap Sd-1...
I prefer the plumes
That clown with a "clean sound"
Which is already breaking up!!!
What's the point???
I don't give a shit!
lol
Man this tone is so bad
Ya totally sucks right?
