They're both great ! I had (and sold) the OD9, but currently owns the 808 alongside an East River Drive. They're all pretty much in the same ballpark. Can't go wrong with any of them, they're slightly different flavors of the same thing. All great TS style pedals.
To my ears and experience the OD808 is the better perhaps the ideal boost for high gain and extreme metal. It brings the right amount of aggression, attack and tightness while still allowing the fluidity and sustain of palm muted note fundamental to come through. I know most people roll their eyes about different sound of overdrives being negligible but there's truly a delicate balance in this application, but go ahead and make fun of me. **tremolo palm mutes off into the sunset**
I know what you mean. For certain riffs I prefer it...it has a sort of 'smoothness' to it...but the OD808 has better 'cut' for more chuggy djenty bits. Thanks for watching!
Ya they are pretty much the same pedal. I have another video if you search my channel where I compare them to some other TS pedals. They’re all pretty much the same deal.
I've always preferred a Maxon OD808 as my boost even though I'm currently using a Keeley modded Boss SD-1. I also love the TS Mini (based on an 808) so I'd personally plump for the 808. Both sound good in this demo...
In general, I think I'm leaning toward the 808 as well, but there's something about the OD9 I can't quite put my finger on that I really love. I'll end up keeping both probably haha.
You’ll love the 808x! I have an Ibanez at 808 and recently the maxon 808x and for boosting the 808x has that slight edge, while it may not be a world of difference there is still a difference! Justify $159 difference probably not but when you have a pedal problem I guess everything is a justification away. Love the videos brother! Got a new sub here!
Hey, really appreciate you taking the time to dig into these videos, and thank you for the sub! I'm still a little guy on here, but I'm trying to grow the channel since I really enjoy this stuff and enjoy sharing my love for it! I think an 808x might be next on my list, I've been meaning to get one for a while now and I've heard so many good things about it. I'm a bit of a Maxon fanboy at the moment, so I might make that happen sooner than later haha. Cheers brother!
The difference is really small... I feel that if you try two different units of ts9 with the same settings you would get kinda similar results... No two units are identical due to tolerances. I do enjoy the music in your demos! Cheers.
Maxon is like ten times more powerful? Not sure how to interpret this: “The Tube Screamer’s emitter follower output buffer is the area of greatest interest because of the two components that follow it in the circuit - a series resistor and a shunt resistor. The values for the classic TS808 are 100R and 10K, and for the TS9 they are 470R and 100K. This is the only difference between the TS9 and the more collectable TS808.” TS9 is same as Maxon OD-9 but I think you know.
Hmmm... 🤔 I just went through comparing 3 Maxon of the same model number this week and they all sound different. Almost if not as much a difference as between the 2 in your video. One is more clear but a little thin and another is more washy like the OD-9 is here. The 3rd has the clarity and low end punch so it's going to be my main keeper. The clearer one might be my backup, or if I need less thickness. I also have two od808's and one has noticeably more output than the other. The rest of the Tone might be better compared in a recording, but at least while playing, I think they sound the same, except for the output. Anither thing to consider is that the Od9 is true bypass and the od808 is not. The way you have the hooked up, when the od808 is on but the od9 not, 6ou are only getting od808. Eh the od9 is in but the od808 is off, you're getting the od9 plus the buffer of the od808. That might not change everything, but there could be a difference.
Not really much of a difference at all in front of an already saturated amp....shocker. I'm one that feels the 5150 is the last amp that needs to be boosted though, now if this was a recto or 2203 then that would be different. Just my opinion. The clean channel demo made a huge difference.
I think you used to much gain from the amp. and thats way it is difficult to judge which is better. Of course I hear that both sound great and has potential but as I wrote to much gain from your amp and to much compressed tone.

Od808, best od ever..cheers from Argentina

Agreed!
Outstanding! Enjoyed the video. I use both of these with my 5150 II! I cant decide which I like better either lol... Subscribed and liked 🤘😎
Thanks man!! Appreciate you dropping in. I also can’t decide between the two of them. They are both just such great pedals!
I think I prefer the OD9, but difficult to say why...
I know what you mean. For certain riffs I prefer it...it has a sort of 'smoothness' to it...but the OD808 has better 'cut' for more chuggy djenty bits. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the vid. I own a 5150 II and i was curious to listen the diiference beetween the two pedals. Very small difference i'll stick with my 808.

OD9 a little fatter/fuller , while the 808 a tad brighter and more bass cut
Exactly, I agree. They are both great pedals and have their place depending on the song/riff. Thanks for watching!
I have both of them and get the same results 🤔
By your explanation it seems that 808 is more like boss SD1? Since it cuts more bass and sounds clearer, am I wrong?
discovered maxon originally made the tube screamers. im gonna support them
but technically the boss OD1 was the original. but i wanna go green
Great comparison! Prefer the 808 for a tie.
The 808 is my personal fav all around. Thanks for watching!
Maxon od 9 🔥
Great demo. Thought your demo riff was fantastic. One of yours or a cover?
Thanks! Not a cover. A song called ‘Guidance’ from one of my old bands from like 15-20 years ago.

You are totally right, regarding tolerance. Glad you dig the music, appreciate that (it's all original stuff unless I state otherwise).
I prefer the green one
Damn it, I wanted to like the 808 so I’d could buy it cheaper as a backup. No, getting another OD9.
Have you thought about getting the OD-9 modified by Fortin?
It’s on the way...video will most definitely follow... ;)
i got the maxon od808x, i think its just got more boost to it
I will eventually get around to picking one of those up, it's been on my list for a while!

What cab was used?
Sounds great!
Thanks, appreciate you checking it out. No real cab actually on this one, using my Torpedo Studio with a Zilla Cabs IR.

It’s meant more for modern metal to tighten up the low end, not really to add gain
Yet, this is the best 5150 tone I have ever heard.
down vs killswitch engage
Your playing is tighter than a ducks butt. Came here for the pedals….oh well👍
Haha is this a compliment? I think it might be, but I’m not totally sure. Lol thanks for watching man!
@@ScottBynoe it’s definitely a compliment! 👍
@@Gladiator_Riot4 lol ok I thought so, thanks man
