Hindu gods with flute/flower in their hand = Hinduism
Hindu Gods with weapon in their hand = Hindutva
All our gods have peace / love in one hand and weapon in another. That is the essence of Hinduism. No peace can exist without ability to defend

If someone comes to kill you, would you defend yourself or let them kill you? Laying down and say I am nonviolent, is not going to save you from the enemies. You have to fight and defend yourself.

A very insightful explanation by Vikram on the first mention of Hindutva and its etymological meaning. However as Vikram mentions that got super-ceded by the definition Savarkar defines in his book Hindutva. So to avoid confusion and fruitless debate we should stick to Savarkar’s definition which he clearly states Hinduism is not Hindutva. To know more about Hindutva and what Savarkar wrote about Hindutva read on.
Hindutva is a doctrine. The problem with Hindutva is that it is not well explained and promoted. Hence misunderstood. This results in misconceptions being promoted to malign Hindutva.
It should be noted that Hindutva draws from Sanatana Dharma, which promotes tolerance and acceptance, that, “Truth is One, paths are many”.
This introduces a major disagreement with Christianity ✝️ and Islam ☪️. Both claim that theirs is the only path. This is inconsistent with Hindutva. To distract from this issue, Hindutva is maligned, and people who don’t understand the wisdom and depth of Hindutva, are intoxicated by this Kool Aid that propagates a false narrative.
Hindutva is very clear that no religion is superior or inferior to another religion. It does not mean all religions are equal.
One of the major causes of intolerance is due to conflicts arising over religions. Hindutva accepts and acknowledges that individuals should be free to embrace the religion of their choice.
If all religions confined their activities to their followers and refrain from reaching out to followers of other religions, it would serve to reduce some of the issues that give rise to conflicts.
The major issue Christians and Islamist have is that they see Hindutva as anti Christianity ✝️ and anti Islam ☪️.
This is far from the truth and can be dispelled by emphasising that Hindutva is secular and accepts all religions. Like Sanatana Dharma it even has a place for atheism.
Hindutva calls on all religions to adhere to the boundaries of their beliefs and not cross their boundary to address, attract, motivate, incentivise, compel or resort to force individuals of other religions to join their fold. If this were followed Globally, it would have a positive effect on World Peace.
It is the politicising religion with, “our religion is better than yours and so come join us,” that fosters social tensions.
Non interference is a tenet of Sanatana Dharma which Hindutva embraces. But this does not mean following the doctrine means offering the other cheek and tolerate religions crossing boundaries.
The origins of the term Hindutva as a doctrine can be traced to Savarkar’s book of the same name.
Savarkar writes that Hindutva is different from Hinduism 🕉. That “Hindutva is not a word, but a history. Not only the spiritual or religious history of our people as at times it is mistaken to be by being confounded with the other cognate term Hinduism, but a history in full. Hinduism is only a derivative, fraction part of Hindutva”.
Savarkar writes. “A Hindu means a person who regards this land of Bharatvarsha, from the Indus to the seas as his Father-Land as well as his Holy-Land that is the cradle land of his religion.“
This is where Savarkar’s definition of Hindutva runs into turbulence.
The term Hindu, as defined above is different from Hinduism. It includes Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Dalitism ( for lack of a better word), whose followers consider Bharat 🇮🇳 as the “cradle” land of their religion.
Maybe rather than extending the term Hindu to associate a person as defined above, it would be better to invoke the term Dharmic Religions which comprises of Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma), Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, as well as Dalit and Tribal beliefs.
In doing so the statement, Bharat 🇮🇳 is the cradle land of Dharmic religions is indisputable.
Some might say the Rig Veda came from beyond Bharat 🇮🇳. Well even if it did, we don’t know from where and no one worships the region or place where it came from. Besides the evolution of Sanatana Dharma occurred within Bharat. Also the other Dharmic Religions were founded in Bharat 🇮🇳.
In doing so it does differentiate Christianity, Islam and Judaism, whose cradle land is in the Middle East. Parsis who are Zoroastrians are a special case. They have fully assimilated themselves with Bharat 🇮🇳 and have transported their holy fire 🔥 to Bharat.
Savarkar addresses this differentiation by stating, “But when we attempt to investigate into the essential significance of Hindutva we do not primarily - and certainly mainly - concern ourselves with any particular theocratic or religious dogma or creed.”
This is the essence of Hindutva doctrine. It is an umbrella over all the historical religions of the world prevalent in Bharat 🇮🇳.

It is time that we as a society demand that the controllers of our social , national narrative respond to our genuine urge to learn about our history and civilisational inheritance . The Supply side cannot unilaterally decide the content that is to be served. The concerns of the demand side is to be taken into account too. Sanatanic tradition , folk lore, cultural memories and their ancestry must be brought to bear in public discourse.

Sir, If Mr. Savarkar/RSS talks about casteless society, then why is it that RSS, in it’s almost a 100 years of coming into being, has been always headed by the Brahmins!! They couldn’t find one non-Brahmin leader in (almost)100 years in this vast/great country? Neither they facilitate inter caste marriages, In fact they are against it. What kind of casteless society they’re talking about? “India wants to know “!!!
That RSS came into being as a Nationalist, anti communist outfit aka fascist is very clear right from its inception (1925) 4 years after Italian fascist party, in its dress code, signature salute, it’s Modus operandi, It’s foremost proponent M S Golwalkar writings (a bunch of thoughts) and Mr Savarkar writings. So Hindutva as used by the RSS, in my view, is Indianised Italian fascism. Anybody with a little history knowledge knows it .Neither RSS has hidden it!!!
Now if you ask Indians what is Hinduism , you probably get as many interpretations /answers as the number of Indians you ask!!!!
! A Brahmin exists, A Kshatriya exists, A Lingayat exists; A Hindu exists only in theory, not in practice!!! Whereas a Christian exists, a Muslim exists, a Jew exists!!! It’s simple they marry each other into their religion!!! A Hindu marries (only ) into his caste !!!Isn’t that the (stark) reality?? In India Caste is the reality not Dharma/religion!!Tell me it’s not and prove me wrong,
I’m from an Indian village. You go to any village in India, you may or may not find a Hindu/Vedic god temple but you invariably find the village deity(usually female deity in southern India) temple that doesn’t find mention in Hindu scriptures!! You may say there are too many gods in (Hindu)India to write all of them down into Hindu scriptures. Then the question arises whose god is important/worth writing about?? Whose god is legitimate?? It’s a question of inclusion or exclusion!!
A lot of bourgeoisie Hindus need to learn a lot about the real India that is not in any Hindu scriptures or books!!
The sign of a bourgeois is that they never address the real questions/problems like , no inter caste marriage, not eating /mingling with certain castes, why there are separate lines for entering/eating in certain temples!! Instead they get into this bookishness in place of real practice!!

To know what a humbug MKGandhi was one needs to hear comments of Srila Prabhupada (ISKCON) on him. Prabhupada dismisses Gandhi's idea of non violence and says non violence in the political field is impossible. There is an interview of his on RUclips for anyone interested in knowing more. Prabhupada says Bhagvad Gita is taught on the battlefield and Krishna is telling Arjun to fight in order to defend Dharma. He is definitely not advocating non violence.

For a Musalman, loyalty to faith trumps his loyalty to the country’: BR Ambedkar on the question of Muslim allegiance to India
Among the tenets, one that calls for notice is the tenet of Islam which says that in a country which is not under Muslim rule, wherever there is a conflict between Muslim law and the law of the land, the former must prevail over the latter, and a Muslim will be justified in obeying the Muslim law and defying the law of the land…The only allegiance a Musalman, whether civilian or soldier, whether living under a Muslim or under a non-Muslim administration, is commanded by the Koran to acknowledge is his allegiance to God, to His Prophet and to those in authority from among the Musalmans…”

In other words, speech against Hinduism is equivalent to violence, and therefore physical violence is justified in response? And since simply being Muslim necessarily means a rejection of Hinduism, it's ok to have riots where people burn down buildings and beat Muslims until they say "jai sri Ram". Do I understand correctly?
How does this version of Indian history, which sees the subcontinent as a single entity (note that the examples are all accounts from outsiders), account for the periods when India was ruled by Buddhists and Muslims? If the concept of Hinduism was created by the British, would you say that Ashoka was a Hindu, despite his explicit conversion to Buddhism?

Gandhi was a spiritually evolved person, he can follow extreme ahimsa in his life (am not sure he did that, he always sent off the goats which gave him milk, when they stop giving milk)
but he ought to have the commonsense, that such application of ahimsa for the nation as a whole, would destroy our country and people...
Being a spiritualist, he had that much more responsibility....But he failed himself, and failed the nation as well...
Every one knows what are samanya dharmas....which we all need to follow in life... One need not be a Arjuna to understand this.
Is this kind of foolish ahimsa is what taught by Sri Krishna in Bhagavat Gita or by Sri Ram?
What does our dharma sastra says?
What did Chanakya said in Artha sastra?
    What does our rishis advised?
and, what is practically efffective? just simple commonsense...
Letting murderers to brutally kill, rape all our people, swindle all the wealth, destroy everything that is soul of Bharat....- does this help anywhere, anytime?
Ahimsa at highest level - is for sanyasis , sadhus etc. Total ahimsa SHOULD NOT BE FOLLOWED by kings /rulers / military/ those who govern the country.
    The sloka is,
    "Ahimsa Paramo dharmaha
    Dharma Himsa thathaiva cha'
People quote only first line, but second line is more important...
It means, any violence adopted to protect Dharma, is essential and will do good to all.
Gandhi did not understand scriptures correctly. And, some how, he always wanted to do what he felt right, knowing fully, he was leading the country and even guiding the leaders. So, he must have understood that he had to be on the correct path, so that he did not end up doing droha (betreyal) to our own Bharat...
But he ended up precisely doing that...
Gandhi neither followed Dharma (what is told in scriptures), nor he listened to great saints of his times...
    Its the sad truth...Aum Shanti!

I'll be very candid here: I'm a Hindustani Parsi settled in the US. My father was an officer of the Indian Army & my pro-Hindu stance comes from being part of Hindustan during my childhood & youth. We are now in a world where weapons are not uncommon (in the US in fact, they are a menace & a downfall) so what distinguished Indians & Hindus from others was NON violence. Peaceful Resistance, but not passive resistance. But this ideal of taking up arms, in "Political Hindutwa" would make Hindus & Hindustan no better or less evil than others - And our uniqueness of representing Peace (in it's true essence) would be lost. PEACE is a very powerful and potent representation, NOT passive just not violent. PEACE IS ALWAYS THE SOLUTION - NEVER THE PROBLEM! So, to sum up what I'm getting at is this: If we observe the Gandhian philosophy of Ahinsaa, then Hindus will be unique & respected, otherwise Hindus will be among the many others who use violence to curb violence and VIOLENCE IS ALWAYS THE PROBLEM, NEVER THE SOLUTION! And no better or different from alllllll the other hypocrites who attack, kill or "defend with violence" in the name of religion. Gandhiji won India independence, let us not evvvver underestimate the power of Ahinsaa!!

Being peace-loving is not to be equated with being pacifist. When faced with violence - be it political, religious, cultural or misinformation warfare - from sections inimical to and seeking to erase Hinduism, we have to stand up and respond as necessary to protect ourselves. It is because of the valiant resistance of countless heroes of this civilization over the centuries that Hindu/bharatiya civilization still survives today, when all the other ancient civilizations have bitten the dust and are restricted to books and museums today. Unfortunately, many Hindus themselves don't understand this and think that being meek, pacifist and tolerating all kinds of attack from others is what must define a Hindu. As for Gandhi and his ahimsa winning us independence, I think that theory is highly debatable. There are many accounts that suggest other reasons such as the naval mutiny of 1946, the efforts of the INA and the weakened state of Britain post WW2 that may have led to the decision to leave India. Gandhi was a meek pacifist who condoned and even justified the massacres of Hindus in Kerala, Bengal and other places. If he was a true ahimsak, he should have equally condemned violence from all sides.

Bhai parsi’s we’re peaceful that’s why you had to run from Iran and seek refuge in India. We Hindus don’t want to run like you parsis did. We already ran from Pakistan, East Bengal , kashmir. Not anymore
Hindus protected parsi for a millennia cause people like Shivaji used violence to stop fanatics like Aurangzeb.. the very fact that parsis even exist in this world is due to hindutva. To resist violence and injustice, you need violence. That is the main message of bhagvat geeta and Hinduism . That’s why all our gods have flower in one hand and a weapon in another
