    In the reggae world, we frequently have a spring tank on the mixing board. By hand, we strum or hit the springs to create a crashing sound. If you ever wondered what that sound was, there you go.

  • @DrKevGuitar

    Surf rock legend Dick Dale always ran his reverb in the front and his amps were cranked! The breakup and compression of the reverb-ed guitar signal is a fundamental part of surf rock, emphasizing the drip. Just watch out to keep the verb short, because OD and compression lengthen the tail!

    Just about the same time that Fender added a reverb tank to it's amps, Ford Motor Company started offering reverb for car radios. At the time, if you wanted to listen to music on your car radio, you were stuck with a crappy AM radio played through a small cheap speaker in the dash. A Spring Reverb tank in your trunk improved the sound to bearable levels for younger drivers.
    PS. I had a car with an aftermarket tank, playing through an added rear speaker, in the 60's. At the time, I had reverb in my car, and only vibrato in my amp.

    The secret to figuring out effects pedal placement can best be summed up with one quote from Josh from JHS Pedals: "Just try stuff." I know some guitarists whose tone I absolutely love, who put Reverb and Delay before their amps, and a lot of guitarists, who follow a more "conventional wisdom" kind of approach

    • @johanneschristopherstahle3395
      @johanneschristopherstahle3395 Год назад

      With amps that don't have an effects loop it's the only way to go. It will usually only make a real difference if you drive the amp though. You can of course put a drive pedal behind the reverb if you want to be able to recreate this effect, but want to be able to control it and thus need to keep your amp on a clean setting.

    • @Joe-mz6dc
      @Joe-mz6dc Год назад

      @Johannes Christopher Stähle That's not true. There are indeed other options if your amplifier doesn't have an effects loop. You can use a Fryette Power Station for example. Not only does it give you an effects loop, you also get an attenuator and reactive load for recording.

  • @RobertFisher1969
    @RobertFisher1969 Год назад +12

    And once you start thinking about reverb as an effect instead as simulating a physical space, that can open up all kinds of possibilities. Like running the 100% wet reverb in parallel through effects different than your dry signal chain.

Only really nice expensive amps made past like the mid to late 80s started having loops and if it was a combo, it had a tank. I think he knows better but what do I know, I'm too old to have grown up in a day where every amp has a loop.
      Also, thats alot of loops in that comment. Too many ...LOOP!!!!!

  • @thecaveofthedead
    @thecaveofthedead Год назад +28

    As a surf player, there's one important correction I'd like to make: It's _not_ easy to do this on modern DSPs. Until very very recently, every substitute for an outboard tube spring tank was a big compromise. Because reverb is a chaotic effect and fiendishly difficult digitally recreate convincingly. This last generation has things like the UA Golden Reverberator and the Source Audio True Spring (and it's daddy, the Ventris Reverb). These are a huge leap ahead of previous attempts to produce a convincing dripping reverb. But...
    The best way to do this is with reverb impulse responses. These can genuinely be indistinguishable from the real thing. But most guitar players haven't been asking for them. The Logidy Epsi did this a while back, but disappeared, and people have been heartbreakingly been using them as cab IR loaders (cab IRs last microseconds. Reverb IRs go on for many seconds at a time in some cases and normal cabl IR loaders will cut them off almost before they start).
    So people have been using reverb IRs to completely fool the brain for years in their DAWs. But only now with the Poly Effects Beebo (3sec verb IR support) and more fundamentally the MOD Devices Duo X and Dwarf (15sec reverbs) is this really a thing.
    I'm going to be selling my True Spring to get the Mod Dwarf, which is now the best reverb pedal in the world (it also does a vast amount of other stuff, so the decision is easy). Outboard tanks are great of course. But they're costly, fragile, high-maintenance, and often have to be isolated from stage vibration.

    I run EVERYTHING in front of my amp! I have a massive pedal board in front of my amp and it has THREE different reverb pedals. A Oceans 11, a True Spring Reverb and a Kafka. While there is a bit of overlap, they all do something the other two cannot.
    This one ran long but is pretty detailed, just giving you, the reader, a heads up.😜
    I have twelve pedals on a Gator Extra Large pedal board. My main effects are overdrive, reverb, and delay. I have three pedals of each effect as well as a tuner pedal, a chorus pedal and a small flanger.
    The signal path is Boss TU-3, then a Big Muff (AA), Oceans 11, True Spring, Kafka, Ibanez Echo Shifter, Daddy O (AA), Dan-Echo (AA), Dan-Echo (AA) (yes I have two Dan-Echos), Cool Cat (18 volt model), Stax Micro sized Flanger, and a Rat (AA).
    The (AA) designation means that they are Alchemy Audio modified pedals, usually with a chip selection modification switch and a Dead Bat option (Big Muff and Rat) which simulates a dying battery by draining the voltage through that one effect. The Kafka is hand made in Germany and has a very nice dark reverb. Think of a moody Chris Isaak or Wire on their 154 album. I love Dan Electro pedals going back to the 90s. I have two Dan-Echos going into each other because it is a Slap Back setting going into a Space Echo setting. Talk about Psychedelic Intergalactic Rockabilly!!! 😳😉😎👍✨
    This board is my "One Board to Rule them All" project during the Pandemic back in 20-21. I wanted a one stop shop for the tones I like. I run this in front of an early Yamaha amp that is a solid state version of a Twin. I did upgrade the cheapo speakers (it was revived before I got it with cheapo 12s in it) to a cool set of Eminence speakers I bought used. That warmed the sound up significantly! The Ibanez Echo Shifter is to mess around and do the crazy UFO sounds. The one pedal that was a happy accident was the Stax Flanger as I originally bought it to loop through the Kafka but it did not sound great. But it sounds pretty darn good towards the end of the chain.
    The underside of the board is really cool. I bought a flat multi purpose power strip that has USB ports too. I directly routed the power cables and bundled them together under the board in a way where they are zip tied down to anchors. I have two Gator Power Bricks under the board with 13 available jacks. I also had to use a few wall warts too under the board as the milliamp draw on some of the pedals were too much for the Bricks to handle. I had the great idea to also run around the bottom of the board a LED television light strip so I could have a cool effect. I needed the USB port for that and the other cool feature is I can charge my phone off my pedal board too!😜
    When I put this together it was not in one go. It took about 18 months to get it together as shipping was glacially slow. What I ended up with is quite an elevated board mixed with Boutique and near Boutique (Alchemy Audio modded) pedals as well as tried and true pedals. For the genres I cover, this does them all with the exception of the really out there Shoegaze stuff. I have a plan for that soon.
    I would say the two drawbacks of this project is that it weighs as much as a Twin sized amp does and is also as big as a Twin sized amp. The Stax Flanger is the only cheap micro sized pedal and it works and sounds great and everything I could want in a flanger as I barely use it. All these pedals are full sized which explains the weight and the size of the board.
    The price I paid was nuts (did not keep track of everything but exceeded $1600 and that was with some really low prices on the True Spring and Cool Cat) but looking at this board now, I am sure it would be more now with both shipping and individual pedal prices going up. So silver lining, I am glad I did it when I did. I feel the same way about my record collection I bought years ago at prices that now seems cheap or reasonable.😋
    If you want a board and to do it right, get EXACTLY what you want. Take your time and buy quality components. Don't cheap out on the power supply or the cables. That said you do not have to buy things that are the most expensive either. At the end of the day you have a setup that does exactly what you want.
    I do have an older, smaller, pedal board that is mainly Dan Electro and DOD pedals. I also have other pedals that are not on any board. Buy what works for you and make sure you temper that desire for buying the newest or most boutique pedal. I will point out that if you are chasing the Tone Dragon of your heroes, they are probably just useing common effects like Boss, DOD, or Electro Harmonix pedals... not always but usually.😉👍✨

    "stuck in the logical mindest that reverb always comes last"
    The FX loop isn't the end either- besides all the studio people doing it with plugins in post after the mic, you can also put it post IR when running direct- makes everything sound less boxy.

    The only effects i use on my pedal steel besides a little overdrive every now and then is reverb and delay. I always run them through the front of an amp. My amp (peavey nashville 1000) has loops before and after the eq, and one in the power section. I never use them. Ive experimented a few times running my volume pedal throu a loop, and didnt like it.

    Can plate reverb be used in the same way? Very interesting stuff. 🎸

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  Год назад +2

      There is nothing preventing plate being used in this way other than logistics and expense.
      Spring was the compact cheap solution which allowed guitarists to experiment with reverb placement.
      Plate is enormous, heavy, and expensive. They were the tool of studio engineers who the money and space for them, as such they were pretty much exclusively used as a post effect - capturing a sound and then running it through the plate.
      But if you wanted to run a plate into an amplifier, I'm sure it could be done.

    In my opinion reverb being mixed too low and fear of too much reverb is one of the greatest things holding modern guitarists back. Producers and mixers are not afraid to just lather it on thick (trust me I'm a mix engineer) and guitarists shouldn't either. Amp manufacturers need to get with the program with their weak reverb mixes.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L Год назад +1

      This legitimately makes me feel better about consciously doing "too much" reverb for aesthetic purposes, haha. I've even considered recording an old-school bathroom reverb (with speakers and a mic) to add another layer of it for certain parts

    • @calebneff5777
      @calebneff5777 Год назад

      @@thatoneguybones8036 That's not at all why people do it. People do it because it adds a pad to the song, and smears things together. That's not making flub unnoticeable, it's making the song sound bigger. All things should serve the song, and often that does mean having a decent amount of reverb on electric guitars.

      Sometimes you write the correct words in the script, rehearse the correct words, then run the line several times to get decent delivery and only the next day when you start editing do you realise you said a different, non existent word by mistake and it's not worth going back to fix it.
      At least I didn't say 'actually' three times a sentence like everyone else on the internet...
