nobody’s gonna sit down and teach you every scale because there’s way too many of them lmao. he’s just referring to how to shape the scale on the fretboard so that you’re not confined to one position, which will really hold you back when improvising solos
This is such a good idea Rick. Imagine this being how you’re taught scales right off the bat, so you don’t have to go out of your way to then later on break out of the “boxes”.
I was trying to put this in words, but you said it pretty much straight forward. I would humbly add that it may be hard to see the restrictions in creativity (e.g. soloing) that position playing can put on you, until you actually can break free. Like hindsight, 20/20 and all that. But I guess we all gotta start somewhere ;) Cheers!
An interesting thing: I first started with 2-3 diagonal pentatonic, which made the boxes more intuitive. I think teaching diagonally helps to show where those main shapes connect
I’ve found it helpful to play 3 notes per string for alternate speed picking practice on guitar. You easily fall to the next string that way. I will be practicing this 4 note method on my bass tho. Appreciate the heads up
Beautiful guitar with some kind of sustain floating as you play that scale! It has that Neal Schonn feel to it, from the infinity album? Love his, and the band playing together. Neal's cosmic notes are a perfect floating dance with Steve's soaring voice. Perfect name for a band that acoustically and harmoniously literally took you on a Journey!
Rick God bless, you have been a tremendous blessing with your advice and example, which will last through time for many generations. Donnie Estrada Troetsch
Hi Rick! Congrats on making 60. I'll be 57 in May..never believed I would make passed 30. Anyhow, I'm watching ur lessons on scales.. I can't afford ur lesson guides, between jobs.. Thank you for your candor and generosity!
It isn’t an SG-it is his Rick Beato signature Gibson Les Paul with a unique double cutaway. Go look it up. Slightly different from an SG. It only comes in one color.
Wow ! That is so awesome brother !!! I definitely need to learn the notes of the fretboard, I been playing for years and still never took the time to actually memorize the fretboard,, TY ,, 😎✌️🎶🎶🎶
Then you've never heard nothing compared to all the music that is out there; if you get amazed by simple scale playing, imagine arrangements and composition together.
I just stopped the video a few times and figured it out pretty quickly. The concept is simple enough. Start at one note, go up 2 notes per string through the scale, stay on the last string until the next octave, then descend through that same scale 2 notes per string. You'll learn a lot more trying to figure out the notes of the scale, rather than simply playing a line off of notation. The last part is just the ascending triad arpeggio with 2 extra notes on the descend for a better resolution to the tonic.
Tried playing guitar again last night, after I ran my pinky finger under a chain, at work. I was lubing the laminating machine chain up and my hand slipped, and did a revolution around the chain. It took the nail off entirely. The nail isnt back yet, but had the itch to play yesterday, so I tried, and oh my, it made my finger start to throb, when pushing down on the strings. It is still very raw and sore. The bone is bruised too.
I’m a 40 year old man with aspirations of becoming a shredder. For my own gain. I’ve been playing a while and neglected to learn the fretboard. This seems like a great place to start. Thank you very much.
It would be so sick to see you react Australian Indie Pop/rock and surf rock. There are some great and original sounds coming from down here and it would be awesome to see what you think. Some bands may be Spacey Jane, Tame Impala, Teenage Dads, Lime Cordiale, Sticky Fingers, Skegss, Hockey Dad and more!!
That's a nice SG... I have an ebony one ... sometimes I come across this old vintage tone when messing with the marshal ... and I never find it when I want it !....its a guitar that surprises you !
Like coming from trumpet for 7 years and now guitar for the past two. I know what the scales sound like and what notes are but he just makes it look easy!
Bloody hell! finally I feel I want to have a go at scales and trying to learn my way around the neck same as i do keyboard. watching you run up and down the steps i suddenly saw the shapes and thought “it’s the same, I can do this!” just a bit more complex with the scales sitting on top of one another rather than spread out in a single line as on keyboard. And loving the catchphrase: “like that!” 👌🏻🙏🏻
Rick starts playing: Heavenly orchestra of angels join in*
🤣🤣🤣
How does he do that?
@@guylevi He uses shimmer reverb
I’m dead!!
No, he just added some pads in post. A shimmer reverb doesn't behave or sound like that
Compared to most of his “like that” videos, this one didn’t hurt my mind.
... and then you hear the amazing pad harmonies behind.

So true...the man talks in binary
That little 3rd part where he go's up again is so fast I have trouble following him?
“Okay let me teach you guys this good practice technique” **Shreds** “like that” 👍
Exactly. I wish someone could teach beginning from the very beginning. 😅
@@alexmetistaThere are plenty of people on this very platform that do. What he was showing was an intermediate exercise, not a beginner one.
You have me dying 😂

Right?!! You have to already know so much just to be able to follow along, let alone learn anything new.
He is truly brilliant in his practicality. His lessons aren't meant only to teach theory but actual hands-on usage.
.........I just watch for the “like that”.......
Like dat, b!tches!
Me too 😂
Seriously

Most important thing for practicing scales :
Shimmer reverb
I need to find a guitar like yours that runs a string swell in the background whenever I start playing any notes.
It's the new padocaster
It's a effects pedal bro, like a looper.
It's a pedel that "freezes" a note
That's the 'likethat' effect pedal. I think.
Sounds a bit like the RV6 shimmer verb.
This is such a good idea Rick. Imagine this being how you’re taught scales right off the bat, so you don’t have to go out of your way to then later on break out of the “boxes”.
@@crouchjump5787 that's good for you, but almost all of us learned that way
Yo lu got any tabs to practice that?

yes.exactly ...still trying to break free of ,the boxes

A more in depth video with some other scale examples would be awesome
Rick - seriously DON'T LEAVE US. Even if we can't be like you, we get inspired by your questions, answers and humanity. Please don't go away!
Who said he's going anywhere?
@@PeterAnthonyG Sooner or later, we're all going to the grave, whether we like it or not.

@@PeterAnthonyGDoes that mean what he said is incorrect?
Hanging out with Eric Johnson is really starting to show its influence on you and brother I. Absolutely, adore that blue sg.
I liked the arpeggio he played at the end and tried to figure it out, but yes, that is a Eric Johnson run for sure.
Its amazing how you can spiral around the chord and come right back to it. This is a very useful concept
Never realise Rick was such a great guitar player. Always think of a him as a 'producer' type guy. And he makes dry stuff like this sound heavenly.
I have found it helpful to also play scales four notes per string, also moving up and down the fretboard, especially on bass.

I’m partial to the no notes per string method
What a fantastic tone..

Hilarious and just like that …..I like the angels singing in the background……that was the most beautiful lesson I’ve ever seen

That SG is really awesome
Beautiful lesson!👍 Watching you again got me itching to get back into it.
Great lesson as always Rick! 👍 🔥🙏👏
He just taught nothing. Just showing off.
Two notes per string is a good way to force you to move across the neck more
You're pretty amazing at the guitar!
I'm assuming you are being facetious! He's getting his own signature guitar and it's not because he's in a big name band.
Never thought of it this way, but just learned it from the video😮 It's easier than it looks.❤ Don't forget to learn it in a minor scale.
Yes I was able to do this one . Probably because I spent all Covid learning scales and modes . Thx!
came in for the scales, stayed cause of "like that..."
Brilliant lesson. best teacher on the planet

Very nice Rick, thank you
Always more to learn!
Love and respect to you, RB!! ❤
This will help a lot. Thank you maestro.
Bro I love your way of teaching... it's so me... melody wise I love it
Rick is the man. I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years and almost immediately he lost me…..if this is supposed to be a teaching video - I’m lost! 😊
