Thank you Barry for not comparing the two a cappella groups. Each group’s version is beautiful in its own way. Besides there’s no need to compare, only the people who are insecure about what they like feel the need to compare. And this is from someone who holds Home Free in high regards. That said, I also like PTX but my heart will always be with HF.
BEST VERSION. Period.
If I had never heard Home Free sing this song, then, perhaps, the Pentotonix cover would be my favorite. However the way HF sings it, you hear and pay attention to every word.

If I was forced to pick a time stamp, I suppose it would be 4:49. I am just following my heart and don’t want to over analyze to figure out why Inpicked that spot. I enjoyed this version. Different feelings pop up at different times.
You go through the songs twice, first to listen and then a second time to comment. I go through your reactions twice, first time with the sound off to “read” your facial expressions. They communicate so much! The second time I turn the sound up and enjoy it again. ☺️

Barry, answering your question from the Community page.... What I thought was unique about this version started at the beginning, around 2:42, the very bassy solo vocal. I thought that was unusual.

I LOVE Home Free, they are my go-to over PTX (if I'm honest), and they both did justice to this song (Chills to both), but PTX's original arrangement to "Mary Did You Know" moved me more.
So the "Great I am" that separated them in this is 5:26.
You cannot go wrong with either version. Beautiful. (Now gonna finish watching while I listen to this version of you after this commercial stops)

I love their version of this hymn - the singing, harmonies, beatboxing are simply perfect. I think having the first verse bass (Tim) and the final question "Mary did you know" adds an entirely different, somber tone to the song.
I like both home free and Pentatonix cover of Mary did you know but I thought to myself that I would upload a RUclips a video on my channel and I would call it Mary did you know 2025 Featuring Avi Kaplan, Home free and Pentatonix

Chance did the bass throughout the song and I think he did an amazing job, even though we never hear him sing lead, but he was always there and carrying the song with a strong bass instead of Tim this time. I am 1000% a Home Free fan since I stumbled upon them in February 2016. I appreciate and enjoy their version of Mary Did You Know, BUT no one person, no group can sing this song the way the writer, Mark Lowry can sing this song. I believe someone else commented that you should listen to Mark sing this while he was with the Gaither Vocal Band. Absolutely nothing else compares…..my opinion. 👍🏼😁

Vocative also does the song, only in their version Mark Lowry is the lead singer. He is the original writer of the song and they accompany him. It's also wonderful as well. HF did a nice job performing this song, but to me, the entire song felt mechanical in comparison to PTX's version. 4:00 - 4:28 did not have the intensity and urgency as PTX's.
I really liked 6:01 - 6:04 when the camera panned up to the star. That was a nice ending.
This is a great version! The original was wrote and sang by Mark Lowery, a southern gospel artist.
You really have to listen to Marks original. It’s the best!

Home free sings this was such a reverence!! Their harmonies are incredible!! Mark Lowery who wrote the lyrics was with the Gaither vocal band for years!! You need to listen to the Gaithers sing this! He got the "impossible": milk formulated for kittens (he told me it was a sample bottle that some sales agent had left with the vet, not convinced that he would ever sell any); but he had to imagine the "miracle": how to get the best imitation of a lactating cat so that the kittens would want to eat.

I went back to refresh myself on the details of the situation. The kittens are 5 days old with a bed of wool from the sheep. Your grandmother is upset at the efforts they are taking and your grandfather left in his “town clothes”. Yep, got it. We have gotten several batches of one day old chicks 🐥 and I have the picture of my children sitting down amongst them holding them and taking care of them. This is the picture I get when I think of you there by yourself with those kittens.

Lovely reaction! Home Free did a wonderful job of this song, my favorite version is the one by Mark Lowery (the song's writer) and Voctave, but Home Free is a close second. Just my opinion.

I'm a full blown Home Fry, but I do have to note that Pentatonix did a very good arrangement of this song too.
Now try Mark Lowry with Voctave, it may at least match or even exceed these other two. It is a somewhat simpler version, but hugely dynamic still! It is my favorite, even over the Gaither Vocal Band version. Can't beat when the writer sings his own and is an exceptional singer in his own right!
If you haven’t heard David Phelps version of this song, you should find it and give a reaction. It’s phenomenal. He’s such a gifted singer!!

Two other not well known Christmas songs are Breath of Heaven and Grown-up Christmas List. I personally love both of these songs as sung by Amy Grant, but there are other versions as well (just not as good in my opinion).
Would love your reaction to Home Free’s version of the iconic Unchained Melody. And while you’re at it, try another one from Voice Play, maybe Creep, or Nothing Else Matters, or one of my favorites True Colors. I think you will love any of those. New experiences-that’s the point.

I loved the Bassy Boy in this one. Very nice!! Warm. It was not overdone, perfect in fact. Kept your attention and left you wanting more.
The Beatboxing Boys did a great job as well. There were some unique sounds from the Adamses. 😊 The sound that Adam Rupp (had to look his name up) made that sounded to me like the drum stick hitting the drum rim was really cool. That one seems like it would be hard to have multiple multiple takes on. What do I know though, as I am neither a drummer nor a beat boxer. 😁

Hello Barry I won't compare the PTX version and Home Free. I love Tims vocals too, he has a marvellous tone and I enjoy the collabs he has done outside of HF.

Before I even listen to the reaction, I've thought about Mat & Savanna Shaw, and one of the songs they did for Christmas 2021. I thought you might like to react to it, as well. On RUclips, it is entitled, "Breath of Heaven (Official Music Video) - Daddy Daughter Duet - Mat and Savanna Shaw" Their songs might just be another "rabbit hole" for you to start discovering.
Also, I realized a few minutes ago, that I had ASSUMED you had been picking up on Dan Vasc, since just about everyone else has, since he posted his "Metal singer performs 'Amazing Grace'" in time for Resurrection Sunday (Easter). Sorry it took so long to respond. I'm living on Australia time at the moment. I was awake all night and finally fell asleep this morning.🙃 Just woke up.
The heatwave that's been sitting in the southwest has finally moved east. We're going to have three days of temps in the 90s. Today it's supposed to reach 97F (36C), but with the humidity the real feel temp is much higher. Then it will drop into the low 80s for several days. I really can't complain about that.
My cardiologist is very pleased with my test results on the new medication, so good news there.
Havana is one of my favorite PTX songs (I know, I have so many!). A few days ago I heard the original on the radio (or just another version by someone else), and I didn't care for it at all. I've already told you how much I love Where are you now. I listened to the Bieber version the other day and hated it. I'm just such a Pentaholic!

There are no time limits on replies, if there were I’d be guilty of so many.
That’s nice that you have long chats, it’s lovely when conversations just flow naturally and time passes by unnoticed. I have a couple of people in my life that I can go years without seeing and the conversation just picks back up like no time has passed.
I know the feeling of Australia time, it’s hard to get your body clock back in sync once that happens but as long as you get some sleep (no matter when that is) that’s the important thing.
When you hear a cover it’s strange to hear the original, but more times than not the original is the best, I love that PTX and Home Free do great work making the songs their own.
Yes the builder can and we discussed my options. Seeing the summer weather won’t last too long here I need to think of the cold months ahead. I’m going to think it over, insulation options, materials, stone or wood, windows, no windows for studio lighting or blackout blinds so I can have natural light 🤷🏻

In the heat a cool cloth to the back of the neck and wrists can help, keeping a jug of water in the fridge to pour over your cloth is a handy trick. Hopefully it passes by soon and isn’t too uncomfortable for you and your neighbours.

August 20th is fast approaching! That's when I'll see Pentatonix in concert. Can't wait!!! And Qui has made all of her travel arrangements for her trip to NJ to see Clannad in September. Two good things to look forward to!😊

Yes no googling when it comes to medical stuff. I once had a pain in my elbow and google told me I was pregnant… I’m still waiting for the stork to deliver it but so far nothing, maybe it’s scared of all the pigeons.
T, mentioned the other day that she got tickets to see PTX so it’s lovely that a good portion of my gang are going to see them and it helps my argument that I’m actually promoting the acts I react to.
