- We asked real mechanics to break down a lot of stuff over the past year. These were the best moments.
Huge thanks to our entire RMS family and everyone who's watched with us this year!
Real Mechanic Stuff is a channel from your pals at Donut! We feature all kinds of automotive experts, every week.

The brake cleaner call was TOP for this year! Poor Sandro.
Went from 2 to 10
$150plus odd a box in bulk. But retail is over 300 for 10. DAMN... BUT... I know. Business owners look like Sandro looks when you see wastage via laziness or thought... It is money straight out of your pocket as an owner. Just go syphon some fuel from your workers car, in front of them, and toss it on the weeds I the carpark. Lol
You saw Sandro's soul leave his body
10:25
He was devastated
"Ten on the subaru" will forever be one of my favorite moments on RUclips.
Sandro's look of utter pain mixed with dad energy of "I'm not mad I'm just disappointed" 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It has me crying with laughter every time 🤣 Juan not giving a single f#$k and Angela dying next to him, while Sandro looks so disappointed.
Agreed, best moment on the channel. I've watched it so many times. Also the video that the exchange was about
Best comedic moment of 2024, including movies and TV 🤣
Sandro is the real life "I've done that and learned the hard way never to do that again" lol
The Brake cleaner part and how Sandros soul just left his body, one of the funniest things this year by a mile 😂
Brake
@@TheMrDarius fixed.
@@Sellyei perfect thank you 🙏🏼
As someone who lives in Australia and knows absolutely no Spanish, I still absolutely loved the Latino episode. Having people come on and speak in a different language, and especially seeing all the comments from the people who felt most seen by the experience, it just brings me so much joy seeing all of that.
Dude, those Pakistani truck shop videos are legit. Dudes rebuilding fire-damaged starters with a frikkin spoon, rebuilding batteries by hand, honing parts with a flat rock...
😂😂😂😂😂 flat rock….🤣🤣🤣
@@Yankee7000 its actually done bro... Seen it myself... Guy couldn't find his filing tool, and just got a piece of really hard mountain rock (it was a broken off piece from a huge support beam slab)
He literally just filed off chunks off of a rusted exhaust clamp with that, and then proceeded to create a makeshift clamp by twisting the shit out of a wire hanger, cuz the owner of the car didn't want to pay for it...
Its pretty common in many Asian countries... But I can only vouch for India...
My favourite part of being a mechanic was when you had to do shit like that. Sometimes you gotta improvise
2:19 Engine detonation
I've seen this occur up close. Granted, it was a supercharged N/A V8 that went bang on me, but the same effect can occur with fuel injection.
They fuel washed the cylinders, got fuel into the oil, and ignited the fuel in the crankcase.
Over fueling to allow for more boost (Think Jessie from Fast and the Furious "We'll just widen the injector pulse...") left enough fuel in the cylinder to wash out the oil from between the rings and cylinder walls and started moving fuel into the oil pan. They started losing compression / power, and were pulling it in when blow-by lit the fuel vapor in the crankcase. Oil pan held up for a fraction of a second, leaving the PCV passages as the only way for pressure to escape. Oil pan failed, followed shortly by the valve cover. Valve cover knocked the hood up, and what I'd guess to be about a half a square foot of engine block left out the front (Aluminum casting), taking the core support with it.
Well described. I imagine it's a lot easier with boost, but that must be scary as hell up close
Big springs terrify me, I used to install garage doors and I found out the guy I replaced had a spring explode while he was winding it and he caught a piece in his neck and almost killed him. It's like working on a bomb.
Same. Every time they showed a spring that's what I'd think about.
Springs are nasty but what really gets me are big flywheels once spun up.
The flywheels on cars and the like aren't anywhere near as big as the ones I'm thinking of. Old steam engines, big marine engines, power storage solutions (god these can spin fast, really only seen small/experimental ones and even these terrify me), those kinds of things.
@whyjnot420 yep, anything storing that much potential kinetic energy is nightmare fuel
one of fireman ate the clutch off an LSD straight to the head.
I was always stressed while winding up torsion spring on garage door.
I used JB Weld Industrial to repair a motorcycle engine case after I went off a curb and broke a a piece about the size of a sliver dollar out that spanned both halves of the transmission/engine case, bottom, center. I cleaned it very well with acetone first to make sure it was clean and oil free. I rode it for three years afterwards with no leaks or issues. I sold it cheap with full disclosure to a friend who didn't care. It would have been a nightmare if the cases ever needed to be split.
Around 56 minutes in, the ice built up under the car... sometimes, it can get so bad that the vehicle has to spend a day or two in a heated garage to melt it all.
Being from Northern Ontario I've personally experienced it several times.
That happened to my Nissan Vanette multiple times the constant freezing of transmission cables was annoying as hell and most likely contributed to total destruction of that transmission in the end. Finnish winters are brutal to cars.
When I first saw this video, I was "Cool, long video, love it!". Then saw that it's almost three hours so wasn't sure if I can watch it at one go, but said that if not I will definitely watch it to the end later. Started to watch it and suddenly it ended, didn't even expect that. Thank you for this, this is great, loved every minute of it. One of the best three hours spent.
20:14 still waiting for that race lmao
Yup
I'm waiting for two things. I'm waiting to see a video of Sandro and Angela racing and I want to see them let Sandro fuck with the van!
We all are here for Sandro. Just accept now 😂
3:18 wooo wooooooooh! 🤣 that clip never gets old.
i love these compilations! i can just turn it on and work while i watch and see all the best parts! i love that Sandro always thinks of the bois XD
10 Bottle going to be my classic favorite clip LOL
Can’t believe RUclips hid this from me for 50 minutes
It hid from me for 3 hours
Bro Sandro is the best part about Donut this year I’m sorry guys, his brake cleaner check phone call is one of the most legendary moments ever! “TEN CANS ON THE SUBARU!?!?” Will live rent free in my head forever 😂
Angela vs Sandro 1/4 mile and a 3 lap race on a curvy track.
YES!!
Angelina's laugh 😍🤣🤣 and w Sandro on the side w the jokes 🤣🤣 good commentary partners for sure 👌🏾
Both together are a riot to watch.
Sandro and Angelina are the best !
We used to put “whistle tips” in other people’s exhaust systems for a prank.
the whistle goes whoooo
@@doctorb.5893 *Internally screaming like a steam whistle because whistle go WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO WHOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... have to be quiet though, people be sleeping.*
Apparently Angie married the mechanic next door. Eric. New mom. Congratulations
14:05 One of the major issues with the Cheron I believe, was getting tires to last even 1 high speed run. They eventually got one that would last around 15 minutes at top speed. But then it would VERY quickly start degrading. So how did they stop drivers from going top speed for over 15 minutes.
Simple. While doing a full speed run the gas tank can only hold 12 minutes of fuel. Once you get up there, and the air resistance really kicks in fuel consumption goes through the roof.
Seeing some of the older ones gave me *Big Time* nostalgia. 😀
22:09 I drove a F350 with ZERO brakes from Monroe MI to Toledo OH one night down I-75. I still am amazed I didn’t wreck
Was it when Luna Pier was still a nightmare too? I’m surprised too lol!
@@Caal9it was when Manufacturers Marketplace was still a thriving mall😂
23:40 seen a guy shatter his knee cap putting smashing the knee down to push the tyre on like that. Saw the x-rays it was in like 6 different pieces.
That last clip with Sandro, Stephanie, and her dad is adorable and I love it!!
This is one of the best RUclips channels and the best crew out there!
Thank you so much for making such great, top notch content.
Torq-arms are a little archaic in today's shops, but the amount of torque applied to the wrench has to account for the additional length of the 'mounting point" of that contraption on the wrench to the center of the box end. It tends to be a torque multiplier.
---Just my two cents.
The math doesnt add up. It's unlikely to increase the torque. Basic geometric math and the triangles.
@@iHelpSolveIt Leverage. The increase in the length of the lever arm beyond the pivot point.
From the google bot. Torque (T) = Force (F) x Lever Arm (L) x sin(theta), where "F" is the force applied, "L" is the length of the wrench handle (lever arm), and "theta" is the angle between the force applied and the lever arm; essentially, the torque is the product of the force applied and the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the point where the force is applied.
@@ogeafa1 And I'll bet that if you measure it, it's not increased...
@@iHelpSolveIt Okay. I've come to understand that you are going to be right no matter what. So this is my last attempt to correct.
The mounting point of the device (as can be seen in the video) was about the midway point on the wrench adding at least a couple of inches. Not only that, but it was not perfectly in line with the addition wrench, so the adjustment for torque would have to pllied for that if too great of an angle.
Keep fixing under that shade tree and I'll keep building performance engines professionaly.
---Just my two cents.
When using another wrench to extend your torque wrench, the angle between both wrenches matters. In the video, they appear to be at 90 degrees, which is correct. Used like that, there will be no significant torque change. Make the angle smaller, and you're essentially extending your lever, which can increase the torque dramatically.
A compilation of the best RMS reactions? Hell YES!
As a truck driver I can tell you when driving over ice keep driver door open so you can jump before you sink.
10:21 fun fact: elephants can't jump; having a lot of weight means there's limits to physical performance; that's why the largest mammals are waterfaring
48:32 A semi truck blowing flames out of its exhaust usually indicates a problem with the engine's fuel mixture, most likely having too much unburned fuel entering the exhaust system, which then ignites upon contact with oxygen, causing flames to appear at the tailpipe; this can be caused by issues like faulty fuel injectors, a malfunctioning air-fuel sensor, or a worn-out engine component, and should be addressed promptly by a mechanic as it can be a sign of potential engine damage and poor fuel efficiency. Key points to look
Unburned fuel:
The primary reason for flames is unburned fuel reaching the exhaust system, which can happen due to improper air-fuel ratio or ignition timing issues.
High exhaust temperature:
A very hot exhaust system can also contribute to flame visibility, especially when combined with excess fuel.
Engine load:
Heavy loads on the engine can cause more fuel to be injected, increasing the possibility of unburned fuel reaching the exhaust.
Afterburning:
This term refers to the combustion of unburned fuel in the exhaust system, causing flames to appear.
Possible causes to investigate:
1)Faulty fuel injectors
2)Malfunctioning air-fuel sensor
3)Worn-out spark plugs
4)Damaged engine components
Issues with the engine control module (ECM)
Sandro be my friend, please lol.......... The fun you hand your boys had/have that you can't share here must have been great hahaha
we had brake clean in giant 55 gallon drum and used the canisters you pressurize and refill
5:45, That car must've jumped 50 yards!!
"Nothing to be proud of, Russ."

Yall are all awesome. Love y'all's show.
People hate California’s strict muffler laws. Wait until you have kids sleeping and your neighbor starts his car at 4am every damn morning waking up the whole neighborhood.
Thanks for all the fun videos! Merry Christmas!
Sandro, jimmy and Nolan are saving donut , my grandad Bob 71 loves the mx5 to honestly you guys are great *edit* and Justin fs
Definitely love this Series and what a Year it's been! Definitely recommend reacting to some Nürburgring Touristenfahrten Mechanical Fails, lots of crazy Stuff happening there to People an their Cars
For those who don't know "Touristenfahrten" is each Weekend on the Nürburgring where everyone can drive whatever Car or Bike etc. they bring and race around the whole Track
I myself drive there every Month and People from all over Europe drive there just to do it so you see some crazy Stuff
Prost & Cheers, Merry Christmas and as we say in Germany "Guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr" (Engl.: Have a good Slide into the New Year) from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
2:35 it could have been a leaky fuel pump combined with the hot engine, plus fuel and a battery as spark, could cause an explosion in the engine bay
Probably let it idle too long
It should be noted that SAAB and Volvo had these headlight washers because they wanted to have them. Sweden was not a member at the time when the SAAB 99 (pictured in the video) and Volvo 140 (first one to feature that) was a EU member and no, it was not required by any EU rule because it was just SAAB and Volvo that had it out of ALL European cars. Audi and W just had washers.
These were very much not "advanced" it was a single electrical motor and two arms, just like the regular window wipers are in most cars to this day. Thing is, in the north, where I live, you have to do this manually unless you got old headlights because LED lights will ice up and not melt the shit and no high pressure washers will keep that clean.
It was a good idea for those of us that live where -40 (C or F, the scales converge at that point) is a reality, we still need another solution as this is now gone.
So we use pure alcohol, 98.6% pure to be exact and it smells like death so the Russians won't steal and drink it.
Fun fact-40C is -40F
@@stanurena3129 Yes, that is what is meant by "the scales converge at this point", which I just said.
Sandro saying stap it stap it is golden
2:44:33 The truck mechanic I worked at for a while (I'm Australian, so real trucks, not those underpowered, over sized cars American's call trucks) had the housing and some of the fragments of the gears of a truck that somehow managed to go from second range third to reverse on the highway. It was spectacular.
You have cars with beds not trucks
You are comparing pickups and semis? Lol
@@Slywinters No, I'm comparing Semis to oversized under powered cars. What Yanks call 'trucks' serve no purpose other than to use the space (and fuel) of 4 regular cars and over compensate.
@@BabyMakR you think adding more trailers to a land train makes a truck bigger?
@@Slywinters Since Yanks think calling something a truck makes it a truck, why not?
4:50 Jumped my 1990 Caprice over a culvert that was towards the end of a nice downhill stretch on a county road. I was just out cruisin and, when I crested the hill, I saw this perfect ramp so I floored it and hit the ramp doing 75mph. I caught some sick air and bounced a couple of times when I landed. Car was fine.
A week later, a buddy tried it in his mom's Taurus. He probably hit the culvert at 45mph (dude was a total wuss), and nosedived the car into the asphalt. Bent the front subframe and everything.
Love that brake cleaner !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My neighbor is coming over when I work on my car: "Changing your brakes again?" Me: yep, I drive a lot and I drive fast. I bought my 2017 honda accord hybrid in July 2017. I put 236,723 miles on it so far. The odometer read 74 miles when I pulled it off the lot.
So far I changed my front and rear struts. Rear bearings. Front control arms. Front and rear sway bar links. Both front hub assemblies. Upgraded the rear lower control arms to adjust camber and toe easier. Then the ball joints in the hub assemblies 2 years later. PA roads suck.
Waiting til it gets nicer. Hopefully I can hold off my rack and pinion for a few nice days. That's most likely going to be a 12 hour job by myself. Fortunately it's an electric rack and pinion. The new rack and pinion has 21k miles on it and the car was rear ended.
My mom used to jump tracks like that all the time when I was a kid. 79 Pinto is great at it. Gen X life
Best 2 hours and 47 minutes..... well spent!!
19:09 I did too Sandro, burned my dumb hand!😂😂😂😂
if these guys saw my 05 trailblazer they would have a cow , it leaks trans fluid all over the motor , power steering fluid from patch work hoses 20 inch rims and tires on front and factor 17 inch on back , but it was free from my friend it gets me to work , i do love your videos thank you
I had the front 15x7 and rear 15x9 snowflake rims on my white 79' TA dipped white to match the car's white paint, and they looked absolutely amazing. Remember, everyone has an opinion, and there's a saying related to that which I can't recall at the moment.
Sandro is that OG that has the wisdom of a 90 year old man.
@1:18:39, not gonna lie, that was how I felt when I went from working on carburetor engines to EFI, but I have come to LOVE EFI... So easy to diagnose... The tools built in... Just great.
I wouldnt ever take strut apart, only replace strut assemblys already with loaded spring installed never take strut apart if strut is worn and leaking than spring is worn too and strut mounts also better to replace entire assembly with pre assembled and loaded assembly than replace only the strut cartridge part is lil more $$ but saves alot of labor and the cost is about same in end
fire , love you guys helping me a lot with my car!!
9:10 the coolest cat on the show this year. The Tanker Lieutenant Colonel….
1:24:24 literally fell in love with Angelina with her computer talk BUT as a 10+year tire tech (NASCAR, drag racing, and retail) @ 20:20:20 the "best" wheels should always ney on the back, to prevent lateral slipping because you can control the front tires even if they are bald you have no steering in the rear
Torque wrench extension math: the porportional increase in wrench effective length is the same proportional increase in applied vice indicated torque
28:08 I did that when i worked at BMW Kloof street in the late 1980's when we had a massive recall on ZF22 auto boxes, my record was 5 a day and I went to Spares to get the new box and when I asked for help no one would help, so just thought fuxkem picked it up and walked the 8meters to the hoist, slammed it in and finished the job by the time everyone else decided to come back and work.
Love it when the squirt explains things. 😌
My mom and I were just talking tonight about how many people have no clue that Mini is made by BMW. And my mom loves her Minis. And prior to that, her and I drove old Saabs, because they were tanks & so fun.
18:25 Sandro - Is that Master Shake on your hat?!?! Yet another reason to love you!
Sandro is my favorite! This video is hilarious! 😂
While an M1 Abrams can reach speeds around 60-70 mph with the engine governor removed on paved roads, its governed top speed is typically around 45 mph, meaning it cannot reach those speeds under normal operating conditions.
Key points about M1 Abrams speed:
Governed top speed: 45 mph on paved roads
Off-road speed: Around 30 mph
Potential for higher speeds: Removing the engine governor can allow the tank to reach speeds closer to 60-70 mph on roads.
Love You guys.
Greetings from Poland.
That tank reminds me of some footage of demonstration trials of the old MK1 tanks. The stunt looked spectacular, but the crew inside was just brutalized. Broken bones, concussions...
The seat belt dog food clip.
Customer came in for a Duramax service. I found that the whole cavity under the air filter was packed with dog food. Apparently the retired owner was giving the local rodent population of his area enough time to prepare for a winter in his engine bay. And they were loaded 😆
RACE! RACE!! RACE!!! we want to see that RACE! my money's on Sandro
I love RMS, everyone is great but Sandro in a thumbnail is my favorite!!
Spanish lang epp was the best this year and I only speak English. Keep it up!
"When you turn down a road and there are people playing hockey on it, you've fuckedup."
Spoken like a true Californian that has never spent a winter anywhere with an actual winter.
1:48:33 THAT hurt me. I do autoglass as a profession. And Sandro is right, the urethane for windshield installs WILL get on you regardless of gloves, and it will stay and stain for a LONG time. Even worse when it somehow gets out onto the paint area or, god forbid, on the interior of the car. If it touches fabric, it will never be clean and has to be replaced.
Hahahahaha Angelina and Sandro's reactions are simply the best!!!!🇲🇽🇺🇲❤
Sandro lookin pretty fly by rocking the clean shave with the mullet
2:12 What you don't see in the clip is his wife off-camera picking up the RPG she left around the corner.
Daaaamn the way Steph looked at that man's, I gotta hit the gym for the last 50 years 😅
I used to lift cast iron transmissions. minus bell housing.. you do get arms like Popeye. for the torque wrench + end wrench trick, just measure the distance from center of socket to center of end wrench. and go to the back pages of a old motors repair manual, get the torque wrench setting.
The end was truly cool with the Spanish speaking. I’d love to learn and it sounds cool.
Love the sentence stringing, I’d love to learn it.
There are so many ways available to learn. Babbel is a good start
This had me on the floor laughing my ass off dude. A great selection.
That Lambo jump cost about half as much as me jumping my old 98 Volvo wagon as teenager. broke the front coils doing that and severed a suspension bracket. $1500 to replace, mind you I drove on it like that for a few months and didn't find out it was broken until service, though the car felt weird. that Lambo is built really well.
We need more collabs with the Legal Eagle. Devin is so freggin funny and watching him with Sandro was the best.
17:30 thank you for reminding me that our cars effectively run on Egyptian pot batteries
I worked in a chemical warehouse between HS and college as a janitor, and we all called it floor-dry.
This is literally the first time I've heard someone call it kitty litter. 😅
When that man lifted that transmission, it was most probably just the aluminum shell of a transmission.
I see this wrapped as proof Sandro is the best part of the channel
Waaay back in the day I wandered into a tire shop to ask something dumb about my car. I arrived just in time to watch them not realize where the center of gravity was (I think it was a lotus?) and stright up drop it off the back of the lift. this is how I also learned about frames that can't be fixed. I thought that shit was expensive until I saw that Bugatti.
Question is did you turn around and wander back OUT of the tire shop after that 😂
@1:11:11 🤣 Make sure you get the sand and pebbles too from the mats and floor!!!!!🤣
If there was on saying I'd re-gift to RMS it would def be Sandro with, "we're good.. WE'RE GOOD"😂❤🎉
Man, that battery rebuild was beautiful.
was listening to this while in between calls and working on tickets, realized once her dad called back that they were speaking in spanish.. I haven't spoken spanish since high school and understood everything they said..😂
You go Sandro. I used to do bodywork with lead not bonds.
The Audi that exploded is from Albania and they had planted a C4 bomb on it.
..The Super Car Service..
Imagine the costs that the show TopGear amassed.
The Brake Cleaner bit is HILARIOUS!!!
Never rebuilt batteries, but I've cut a lot of rotors and patched a few radiators. One time I could NOT get the right radiator and had to pull a tank off the old radiator and crimp it on the new one.
22:00 That's why you need an MOT like the ones we have "Every Year" in the UK.
I looked the weight of a transmission in a miata, and I might be able to lift it above my head, but you also need to align it. This guy is lifting one twice the size, and EASILY mating it.
