Hey Andrew, just wanted to thank you for this video as I have been just searching the web for a rig setup, and none compared to this one. Very informational and to the point, felt like a much shorter video than what the actual length is. I recently sold my A6400 and I will use that money to build this similar rig! This made me more confident in spending the money on these components and putting them to work! You've earned a subscriber, and I will be studying your videos heavy for the insight and tips you give! Take care and killer vid!
Just got a A7IV and this is a great idea that I will copy. Thanks for the video.I have everything except the battery and was thinking about getting a v mount battery but you convinced me to change my mind.
No problem! Yeah the Titon Base is a great option for these bodies, but you could certainly get by even with Sony's NP-FZ100 batteries and some separate NP-Fs for the monitor/recorder.
Nice rig Andrew. A couple of questions… I want to make a build like this, however for audio already own the Sony ECM-B1M Shotgun Mic that needs the camera’s hot show mount. Do you have an idea how I can do a similar build factoring this in? Would I have to sacrifice a top handle? Would that also mean I can’t mount a Ninja V? Also, roughly how long can you shoot with this setup powering both the camera and Ninja V? Thanks.
Thanks Simon! As you said, to accommodate the ECM-B1M, you'd probably want to forgo a top handle and mount accessories like the Ninja V, etc. on side handles that have shoe mounts. Sony does make a MI shoe extension cable that would allow you to mount the mic elsewhere (model: 1-002-838-11), but these are pricey/hard to find. I've found using the power setup in the video, that the Titon Base can power my camera and the Ninja for around 3 hours or so. Powering just the camera alone, that duration easily doubles or triples (e.g. 6-9 hours).
This one has a catch in it, so you can still use the battery door easily. But I'd look at SmallRig's half cages if you want something that completely leaves it open: ruclips.net/video/QmthKjnkncQ/видео.html
very nice tuto ! - i don't understand what the new locking slider is, for a74 and a7r5. whatever i suppose you advise to buy new 3667B version ? - 90% of the time i make photo but i'd like to learn video. in that sense, i was looking for arca plate, L-plate... how do we attach a arca plate to a smallrig 3667b ? same way that you attached te battery plate ? - isn't it too tedious to remove cage when you make photo ?
Thanks Marc! I think in most cases folks will end up with the 3667B at this point - seems a lot easier to find now vs. the 3667. The bottom of the cage basically is an Arca Swiss plate itself, but yes, you could use one of the 1/2 20" or 3/8 16" threads on the bottom to mount another plate, like the battery in my example.
Can this rig fits A7R IV (not A7 IV)?? I really need to figure out this! Can you confirm that it really fits as you mention at 0:51? Because smallrig does not state that in their page
Pretty much the same setup I use with the A1 and A7R5, only I put the handle on the left side. That way I can support the camera with the left side handle and the camera's built-in grip. Also, I have been using the Ninja V with the A7R5 for the past three weeks. Last month's firmware update must have added support for the A7RV.
Interesting, so you're referring to the firmware update for the Ninja to support (officially) the FX30? Everything worked for me except ProRes RAW recording.
@photoboyjet Hey. Just recently we also got a Sony A7RV with Atomos Ninja V+. The problem occurred during the connection. The signal input does not work when RAW. Do you have RAW output set in your Sony camera ? Could you give us some advice on how to make it work ?
@@adamjopek6434 Is your firmware up-to-date on the Ninja V+? I experienced the same testing it out with my Ninja V; I suspect they haven't updated their firmware yet to support it. I haven't gotten a chance to reach out/ask them yet though.
Hi Andrew, Thank you so much for the video. So well described. I am stuck with how to record on a7rv externally to ninja V I have enabled external HDMi recording, I have just updated both devices to latest firmware(version 3 on camera and AtomOS 11.13.00) and still no luck, when I press record button it says to insert memory card. I removed it since its recording to sd card but not SSD. please help on this. Thank you!
No problem! You'll need an SSD to record from the Ninja, the memory card slot on it is used for adding LUTs, etc. You'd want to initiate recording on the Ninja itself so that the camera doesn't raise an error when triggering recording since there's no memory card in the camera body.
@ thanks for responding. I do have 1 tb ssd on ninja. When I click the red button it’s recording the screen. Could you please tell me which button to record?
@@redefinedevents6622 That sounds right - you're recording the output of your camera (i.e. what's showing on the Ninja's screen) from it directly. The Ninja doesn't have a dedicated record button otherwise, but there are setups where you can set the camera Rec button to control the Ninja.
@@andrewsaraceni I agree, but I see shutter speed, ISO and all the other camera info and even the aspect ratio with the black sides too, But how can I get the output recording as it would do to the sd card?

I think technically the max you'll be able to utilize is 12-bit RAW from the Atomos. In theory the Sony allows up to 16-bit, but not technically achievable in practical application.
Gotcha, Thanks! Did you ever end up making a video on this subject? It's near impossible to find information about using external recorders to improve the a7r5 anywhere on the internet. After getting the firmware updated I was able to get the raw output turned on in camera but I have no idea if its recording 12 bit or not. Apologies, very new to external recorders @@andrewsaraceni

You can either apply a LUT on the monitor, or use Gamma Display Assist (or add a LUT) on the camera itself, depending on the model. I talk more about this here: ruclips.net/video/8QqPyp1gVvo/видео.html
I might have a stupid question, but still … I’m shooting vids on the gimbal right now and wanna try something like that. What about image quality? Is the video gonna be shakie?
Not a stupid question at all. More weight actually helps reduce shake. That, plus IBIS and some good technique makes for clean handheld shooting. I have a video on handheld shooting too that talks about this: ruclips.net/video/MIG-N8mBqIA/видео.html
