    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    Hey mate, chairsaw 101.
    Cut compression before tension. Think about what's supporting the log. In your case the log is supported at both ends so the top is under compression and the bottom under tension. Where a branch on a standing tree the top would be tension and the bottom would be under compression and with compression just like your teenage girl friends know when to pull out. Good luck.

    Great saw, thanks for the review, Might suggest you review when you should undercut first and when you should over cut first- In your video, you are doing a bridging cut, hence the compression is on the top of the log, cut that first, then cut from underneath 2nd. Then you will not pinch you bar. If it is a swinging cut (only supported one end) do the opposite, hope that helps

    I carry a Makita DUC254 (10 inch) in the back of my ute. Great saw for clearing tracks plus firewood.
    No petrol to carry, just lightweight 18v batteries and my 400w inverter charges them off a solar-fed 12v battery.

  • @3g01s7
    @3g01s7 6 лет назад +3

    You don't always want to cut the underside first. I'm by no means a professional chainsaw operator, but i have learned from some videos i've watched and the little cutting i have done myself that generally you need to start cutting the side where it's going to compress and then make the opposite cut a bit offset if the tree is somewhat big, like in your case.
    Just realised the video is over a year old :)

  • @____________________________.x
    @____________________________.x 7 лет назад +2

    I can see the plus sides of it, if you have solar and batteries then it's always going to work, not like a petrol chainsaw which may not like starting for a million reasons, and for which you'd really need to bring all the safety gear along too.
    But it's a bit niche, a petrol version would allow you to do a bit of logging too.
    Overall, a handy thing to have in the back of your trunk.
    Thanks for the demo.

    • @Cancun771
      @Cancun771 Год назад +1

      No petrol smell in the car and no exhaust smell when working. That alone is already _so_ worth it, not to mention the lack of noise. Also you don't need solar panels, you just need a car charger, which Makita sells for something like 80, 90 Euros (DC18SE).
      The top handle version is a bit shorter but I don't think it really saves a lot of space in the car since it is bulkier. I have the DUC353, one of the regular handle versions and it is very easy to pack even in a much smaller car because the body is thinner. In a pinch, you can always remove the bar for stowage. For logging, you can fit a 40cm bar (16 inches) and possibly more, though I am not sure it is worthwhile since the overload breaker cuts in fairly early already with the shorter bars and even when just sawing boards.

  • @Cancun771

    When there is tension in the wood, like here, the prescribed technique is to start the cut at the "compressed" side of the tree, which is on top in most of these cuts since it is touching the ground on both ends. Even if it is only an inch or two, that makes finishing the cut from the other side much easierer

    14" Husqy 36v or dewalt would've done the job just fine! This is an 18v and just like the Ryobi 36v 14" are the weakest in the market. They were developed for small household landscaping. Tested both Ryobi and makita and the blades on both worked for 50-60 cuts and needed sharpning.
    The plastic single bolt chain adjuster is the worst on both, keeps loosening all the time.

I think I would have started at the trunk, keeping my body on the root side of the cut. Then work down the tree towards the top. But what do I know!?

    2 issues...your saw is throwing out dust instead of chips....you need to sharpen your chain. second and more serious issue...you were cutting one handed with the other hand on the tree...if that saw jumps back, you lose your head or something bad.

    Thanks for the fun trail video. I'm impressed by that little saw for sure. Which model chainsaw is it? is it a brushless model? Were you using 4.0 amp or 5.0 amp batteries?
    Cheers!
