Thanks for the valuable lesson. I have always believed the concept that the customer is always right but, Seth's concept seems to suggest that one critics cannot speak for all. That we should listen to the other voices as well. That's great.
That part about addressing a small audience and to not worry about the others was extremely helpful for me. I stopped the video because I just had to change the wording on one of my landing pages right away. :D It feels good to know that it is okay if a lot of people don’t like or get what I have to offer. Then it’s not for them. It’s important that the right people know that I am there. I also liked to get advice instead of feedback. This is one of these seemingly little things that can make a big difference I believe.
Wow, 5 years ago and still offering timeless wisdom. I think my biggest takeaway is marketing is the messaging you use to let people know that you’re the person that can serve them and solve their problem… but not until you learn what they desire the most. Needless to say I watched this while driving and will be rewatching this to take notes and take action later. ❤ thank you for this gem 💎
If anyone wants to follow Seth Godin, here’s a quick guide 1. Read the book This is marketing 2. If you don’t understand, it’s okay (you can read, but not neccesarily understand) 3. After reading, give yourself a break for a couple of days 4. Start watching Seth’s videos, everything will start to make sense Now I see my worldview about marketing changed completely and I look forward to the results sometime in the future
I use to think I couldn’t be sincere and I couldn’t market my work genuinely. But making that shift to believing that I am looking for the small group of people who are needing and are looking for my work has changed my business. And I have to say listening to Forleo and Godin has helped me do that 💕
Same here! I had to unlearn the belief that marketing is sleazy and learn that marketing is so vital to solve a problem for your people and change their life.
Having customers who tell other people about your business is gold. It makes it so much more attractive when people love what you create and tell others. Loved this episode :)
I am a business consultant for artists, and I spend quite of bit of time convincing artists not to do work for free, or sell their pieces for too low. A great definition as to whether you've priced too low is if you resent the sale afterwards. Seth and Marie make a really great point that "free earns you trust and attention. And, trust and attention are the two building blocks of the economy." So, while artists' works shouldn't be free, there are a whole slew of things that they can do to add value to other artists, patrons, buyers, and admirers. Thank you for the video!
So true in 2024! This interview is timeless! When we think about our marketing strategy, it's all about the people who we CAN help, that WANT our help and seek EXACTLY US to do it. Otherwise it's a selling game where no one wins.
By far one of the best marketing videos I've watched. I've felt like I've been struggling with a event but instead of focusing on the masses I'm going to focus on the first 10!! I'm rewatching with pen and paper and I'm getting the book
His entire thesis is extraordinary. 180 degrees in opposition to the way current 'marketing' is being done. Wholeheartedly believe that this is the future. Instead of being selfish, being in service of the marketplace.
It felt so liberating watching both of you talk. If someone tells you he doesn't want you, he is right about that. If he says, no one is gonna want you, he is wrong.
The best that I got from you guys today was the reassurance that there is a beautiful movement of people working to make and expand better marketing. Making it about truth, empathy and real people. Thank you guys so much. On a more specific level I can say you just solve a problem for me. Maybe it's not much of a practical problem but here it is: Sometimes I can get overwhelmed with all the noise out there... All these huge numbers, stories about unicorn businesses, million dollar ideas, overnight success or whatever... This makes me freeze and get into inaction, I start digging a hole of self doubt and asking myself if what I'm doing is even worth it.... After listening you guys chat today I feel really confident in moving forward and taking action without so much FOMO. I don't "need" to solve the problems of MILLIONS neither do I "have to" solve MILLIONS of problems for some people. Just solving ONE or TWO problems for a specific group will do the job! I love the idea and it's still awesome, meaningful and great! It's a very practical and humble approach.
I loved it! Thank you for the free tips! My fave was about not chasing the big masses at the beginning, but to concentrate on the first 10 happy customers. Cheers!
I've just watched this whole episode. But before finish watching it I had to stop for buying the book and as if it was not enough I had to stop again because I felt so inspired by both of you that I couldn't leave that inspiration behind. I wrote a post for my followers thanking them to be with me. It was so liberating! Thank you so much!
My two favorite marketers & humans in the same frame. I got teary eyed when Seth gave Marie some well earned appreciation. He is so very right, we are lucky. And such a brilliant book . Thanks Seth.
My business would not be what it is if it were not for Seth and his books. I read most of them and his new one is reinforcing all of what I learned into one book and even more - its really good.
What a great discovery this man! too many good ideas and facts,... some of them like a slap in the face. Love his humility and approach to people. Will start following him...thanks!
There's always a lot of insights when it comes to Seth Godin, but one statement that really caught my attention is "Free earns you trust and attention". I already knew this but for some reason it's clearer. Thank you :)
I am a real estate broker for a large company. Feedback on showings is always a struggle between agent, sellers and showing agents. The difference of advice and feedback is something I will be pondering and framing in a way I can take to my agents. This was an excellent video! I have added the book to my list. Many thanks!
I've been so confused on how to market my business. I've always been told to have a bigger audience as a solid foundation to have a stable business. I need to get this book ASAP. This feels so legit. I understand where I was confused, and where I need to fix my strategies. Thank you so so much for this video!! 🙏
Thank you for reminding me that I have to focus on my target audience and not be affected by the people outside of that niche. I tell my girls that all the time, yet I often forget that it applies to me and my business
Seth's marketing book really helped me to narrow down the parameters of who my product is for. The idea of smallest viable market base is a most valid concept in the process of marketing a bespoke product. It really applies to the very limited or highly unique product that has a rarity because of the cost and complexity of creating the thing. Just my impression. .
Two of my favorite people in one video makes it a must watch. Absolutely love what Seth said about how "free earns you trust and attention"...that that's the building blocks of the modern economy. So many levels to this and you guys always deliver clear messages that resonate long after the words have been spoken. Thanks for the work that you do! It's impacted me in ways you'll never know.
Such a brilliant interview. Seriously. Powerful. Just 10 people. Start with 10. Love this powerful spark! Plus am definitely getting Seth's book. Yes, Genius. This interview created a space of clear creative calm and insight for me in the midst of my current marketing efforts that had me in overwhelm while creating my content. Tons of Gratitude. Love your work Maria and Seth.
Wow! I’ve been an entrepreneur for nearly 2 decades across multiple niches (in my current niche as a belief breakthrough coach for almost a decade) and the amount of wisdom packed into this short video is remarkable. I can’t recommend this enough. Thank you Marie and Seth for all you do. I especially love the simplicity of the Axis exercise. Going to play with that one today! #alwayslearning
Great interview, again! My only take is on that comment: you CAN be authentic and a professional, all at once! They don’t need to be mutually exclusive.
Okay, that part about 'who your product is for, what they want, and what you will help them' really helped me to progress to a new level with something I'd been sort of struggling with. Thank you to you both!
Love, loved this episode! Really valuable to shift mindsets from trying to invite 1,000 people to a "party" that they are not super interested in, to inviting 50 that really care and want to be there.
Wonderful listening from the marketing giants. As a learner and a halfway marketer I got it that choose the audience wisely and be yourself. I am starting doing this from now in better way.
Yes, Syed! Being a marketing there's always things to learn and we're so glad that you're taking the time to learn new tips and tools :) Hope you see tons of success from Seth's tips! - Monauar, Team Forleo
This was such a powerful interview, I feel SO GOOD after listening to this. The key insight I took away was the ideas of cost telling a story, and that you're giving people the chance to tell *themselves* a story when you allow them to pay more.
My two favorite Marie Forleo vídeos are the ones with Seth Godin, love his brain and his heart ♥️ amazing information and value. Thank you so much!! I’m watching this over and over!! So much wisdom 💝
I am smiling, for I am exactly that piano teacher 🙏❤️. From my nature, I already knew, but it so far made me insecure.... Further I am trying to build a business. No idea on how to do that as an artist 🤭 💜 & I came across this interview. This is so matching who I am. So I promise myself to get better in marketing. For with breathing right & soft, truly changes will happen for me & my clients. Big thank you, Marie! ❤️🙏🐣🌷🌻
Praise hands. Girl I NEEDED THIS! I bought the book today and can't wait to read. So grateful for you and Seth both and OMG what a humble heart that man has! I'm just in love
I enjoyed everything about this video, it was my first time hearing Seth Godin speak and I bought the book after they covered authenticity and being a professional. The piano teacher example explained it well and with a bit of humor, that made me laugh at myself. Best take away: If you're a professional, make a promise and keep it.
As a person who has built a business on helping solopreneurs market more authentically I loved this interview! It turns marketing and authenticity on it's side so you can look at the concept from a different angle. I found myself saying "YES!" out loud multiple times. Thank you Marie and Seth for sharing your wisdom with the world. So many great nuggets here!
I love that nugget of wisdom where you clarify what your target product is, who your target people are and how you are going to help them. Great tips on how to focus your business and strategy. Making a difference in the world with my small target badass audience is where I'm so excited to focus!!
Great episode. I am a big fan of Seth Godin. He never disappoints. This episode made me realize that I suck at marketing indeed. Haha! My craft is good and I thought I found my audience but maybe not. I need to get better, do better. I will definitely read this book. Thank you Seth and Marie!
Thank you for sharing a helpful and balanced perspective on marketing as a resource and support. However, one thing I consider important to reframe is the idea of authenticity. Authenticity isn't about being emotional, it is about being real enough to keep aligning yourself with your ethics, morals, expectations, inspirations and dreams. Being authentic and professional are not mutually exclusive. You can be both. You can be both.
Hi Marie, thank you a lot for the interviews. They are inspirational but also educative. I like the questions you are asking. While listening to the talk with Seth, I sent first e-mail after 6 months... Thank you!
What an amazing interview. Thank you so much for this. I really needed to hear that last quote. It’s hard when you’re doing something on your own and you believe in it so much.
I was so happy to see Seth back at the show! I love him, too :) SO many nuggets about criticism... and even authenticity! Definitely loved the part of the book he read. Sometimes we do good but if people don't see/know about it, we are not good marketers. Thank you, Marie and Seth!
This is amazing! I'm taking notes like crazy here. Validates a lot of what I've learned, and some great points I hadn't thought about. So valuable. Thank you Marie and Seth!
This interview was right from the person being interviewed and the interviewer. The right questions were made for the right person in such a way that you can hardly feel this content is heavy (which it is) and very useful for the understanding of real marketing. Thank you much for sharing this content with such great quality!
This is absolute genius! So inspired by you guys and adore Seth! Finally someone who really works at a soul level! Marie I love you and thank you so much for sharing this 😘🙏🏼
I felt that to 😊. I'm switching my careers to digital marketing and as I do research I feel a bit icky with some of the tactics people recommend and what seems to work. Seth makes a great mentor, his personality and mindset were a pleasant surprise.
Loved this. I really appreciated the comment about "price is a story", and will never be scared to to offer a low price, because that is just a symptom of a poor story.
This episode resonates with so much that I purchased his book. I'm a teacher and entrepreneur who helps teachers of high needs students with classroom management and increasing student achievement. I've been selling my lesson plans which have done well but I have moved into selling online courses which takes marketing. I know I've been approaching marketing all wrong because the reason I started selling courses is because of my journey of working with underprivileged students. Every time I promote my courses my story gets lost. Hopefully, reading his book will give me clarity.
I finally figured out who my avatar is!! I finally got to the root of it and spontaneously wrote it all down. This episode was super helpful and I’m starting to feel more motivated again. I was looking side to side for a minute there but now I feel better about my section of ‘the market’.
This surprised me because it rings TONS OF BELLS for me ! So I am on the right track. A perfectly timed bit of reassurance for me (am creating a course), plus some very good advice thrown in, namely not to worry about getting spots on the white tablecloth but to push ahead and focus on what matters. Thank you. And I am ordering the book. Thanks for that, too. The comments about the critics are so to the point. There used to be a newspaper dance critic who quickly made me realize that if he liked a piece, I would enjoy it too and one of my friends on the other side of the world used to talk about films he'd seen and I started to rely on his assessments because I often too enjoyed the films he said he'd enjoyed. And that's so wonderful. But I also learned to ignore the other art critics when they wrote about a dance performance and other friends when they were enthusiastic about some film because their personal tastes and interests were simply different - and there is nothing wrong with that. It did not make me dislike the latter people. It made me focus on the other two people with regard to dance performances and films.
Greetings from Kenya. Wow! What a great inspirational and impactful video. Seeing two of my greatest mentors at their best. I am glad I came across this great video. What a great way to start my marketing strategy goals this year. George Simwa. Author.
What an awesome interview and I’m definitely buying the book! I love Seth and watch every bit of content that I can from him. I’ve never watched anything he’s done and failed to learn from it, his insight is gold and so easy to understand. I’ve just started a business and am still deciding where I fit in my niche, but now I know, I’ve great at what I do and refuse to sell myself short. I will still have the occasional offer to bring new people through the door because people don’t know you yet, but when they do, they will stay 🤩. And if they don’t, that’s ok too, they didn’t value what I had to offer. 💕. Thanks Seth and Marie for helping me with this! 💕💕💕
I love the formula! It made my brain happy even when it had blanks. I used it immediately in a video I filmed and in my networking commercial. Thank you for the clarity!
The best insight I got: Is to focus on a viable audience How am I going to apply it? I'm gonna define my audience by changing my scope that is 8x right now into a sniper scope that's 2x, btw my sniper's going to shoot flowers at them, so everyone's safe in this. For Marie: You're the genius we need today really, and this show is the place every businessman has to be, especially startups.

I love tips about not being generic in your approach, be specific and aim high.
So glad it resonated with you! (:
"If you're a professional, make a promise and keep it." So simple and yet so genius.
That one stood out to me as well. I think this statement sums up the theme of being a professional in the book The War Of Art in one sentence.
That part about addressing a small audience and to not worry about the others was extremely helpful for me. I stopped the video because I just had to change the wording on one of my landing pages right away. :D It feels good to know that it is okay if a lot of people don’t like or get what I have to offer. Don't focus on impressing or converting the average masses. Focus on serving the 10-100 people so well that they'd miss me if I'm gone.
If anyone wants to follow Seth Godin, here’s a quick guide
1. Read the book This is marketing
2. If you don’t understand, it’s okay (you can read, but not neccesarily understand)
3. After reading, give yourself a break for a couple of days
4. Start watching Seth’s videos, everything will start to make sense

It’s so freeing to focus on helping a small tribe instead of “serving the masses.” Thanks!
I use to think I couldn’t be sincere and I couldn’t market my work genuinely. But making that shift to believing that I am looking for the small group of people who are needing and are looking for my work has changed my business.

How much have you actually made?
"Trust and Attention are the two building blocks of the modern economy." That resonated with me.
Having customers who tell other people about your business is gold. It makes it so much more attractive when people love what you create and tell others. Loved this episode :)
I am a business consultant for artists, and I spend quite of bit of time convincing artists not to do work for free, or sell their pieces for too low. Words cannot express how much I appreciate this video!! Thank you to everyone who made it possible 🙌🏾
So much love 🌱✨
It felt so liberating watching both of you talk. If someone tells you he doesn't want you, he is right about that. If he says, no one is gonna want you, he is wrong.
I agree. It is very liberating knowing it's okay that not everyone will be a fan.
I agree, too. Not everyone will like what I do. Others help and support me. That's the business
The best that I got from you guys today was the reassurance that there is a beautiful movement of people working to make and expand better marketing. Making it about truth, empathy and real people. Thank you guys so much.
On a more specific level I can say you just solve a problem for me. Maybe it's not much of a practical problem but here it is:
Sometimes I can get overwhelmed with all the noise out there... All these huge numbers, stories about unicorn businesses, million dollar ideas, overnight success or whatever... This makes me freeze and get into inaction, I start digging a hole of self doubt and asking myself if what I'm doing is even worth it....

Both times I've watched you two together, I've ended up with tears in my eyes. Just brilliant. I love you both.
This is gold right here, as a freelancer I agree 100% to what he says, specially the last part. Great advice.
Wahoo! We're thrilled to hear that. Thanks for being here and watching with us!
I am a real estate broker for a large company. Feedback on showings is always a struggle between agent, sellers and showing agents. It doesn't matter so much how capable your are. But your marketing must be awesome to reach the person, who needs you.
I've been so confused on how to market my business. I've always been told to have a bigger audience as a solid foundation to have a stable business. I need to get this book ASAP. This feels so legit. ☀️ 1000 true fans indeed! So love and appreciate this conversation! Thank you 🤗💕
Seth's marketing book really helped me to narrow down the parameters of who my product is for.

I enjoyed everything about this video, it was my first time hearing Seth Godin speak and I bought the book after they covered authenticity and being a professional. Loved this video! Seth always speaks to me. My golden nugget: "Free, earns you trust and attention".
I'm a new entrepreneur this is the first time listening to your show. This was great thank you both!

Without a doubt my favorite episode so far. Loved every minute of it. Thank you!
Amazing! Everything that I needed to heard right now. Thank you
How did somebody talking about marketing make me cry? Amazing.
Same here! Seth's different- his approach is empathetic. And a completely fresh perspective to what I've heard for years.
Amazing session. Read the book and you made it even better Marie by drilling the right questions.
Thank you so much for such a sweet compliment! We're thrilled you're here and watching with us. 😊
I love that nugget of wisdom where you clarify what your target product is, who your target people are and how you are going to help them. Great tips on how to focus your business and strategy. Making a difference in the world with my small target badass audience is where I'm so excited to focus!!
Rebranding the hustle. I love it.
❤❤❤ So happy to have you here.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Love this, I love you guys! Thank you!
Thanks to Seth I have paraphrased my own mantra which I pass to everyone: "trust is the only long term currency".

Thank you!
Love the take on authenticity!!!! Thank you. Just be a professional and keep your promise.
Great convo Marie and Seth ❤
What an amazing interview. Thank you so much for this. I really needed to hear that last quote. It’s hard when you’re doing something on your own and you believe in it so much.
We're so happy you enjoyed this episode! Sending you so much love and support. ❤
I was so happy to see Seth back at the show! I love him, too :) SO many nuggets about criticism... and even authenticity! Definitely loved the part of the book he read. Sometimes we do good but if people don't see/know about it, we are not good marketers. Thank you, Marie and Seth!
So great to see you both together
My insight: choose my axes and serve the people I choose exceptionally.
This is amazing! I'm taking notes like crazy here. Validates a lot of what I've learned, and some great points I hadn't thought about. So valuable. Thank you Marie and Seth!
Same here 😊
Wow, just WOW!! 👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽
This interview was right from the person being interviewed and the interviewer. The right questions were made for the right person in such a way that you can hardly feel this content is heavy (which it is) and very useful for the understanding of real marketing. Thank you much for sharing this content with such great quality!
Love it! Lots of great information and wisdom in this conversation. Thanks Marie. Thank you Seth.
This conversation so resonates with me! Thank You!!
Love Seth Godin
This is for someone else. Thanks! I'm so thankful to hear this.
I wish there were two more hours of you two talking :) Thank you two so much, I've learned so much. Love this episode!
That's the approach to marketing I like, honesty at first place!
Absolutely, Simone. It's the only way to do it, if you ask us. 💚
That passage at the end that Seth read hit home. I can't wait to learn more! Excited to exercise this into my business. Thank you both so so much! ❤️
I was definitely one of those people who have never heard of you two. Thank you
Thank you two so much, I've learned so much. Love this episode!
Have a clear say/promise is my favorite insight
I'd second your chosen words here, Angelina.
Greetings from Kenya.
Wow! What a great inspirational and impactful video.
Seeing two of my greatest mentors at their best.
I am glad I came across this great video.
What a great way to start my marketing strategy goals this year.

One of my favourite interviews with Marie ever! X
Being part of the current etsy exodus, this was very well timed for me, Thank you Marie and Seth!
I have learnt this: we don’t do marketing at people. We do it with them. Marketers should be generous not selfish.
I love the formula! It made my brain happy even when it had blanks. I used it immediately in a video I filmed and in my networking commercial. Thank you for the clarity!
Amazing. What a great presentation .
I was hanging on every word! You are each so different yet so spot on! FREE earns trust & attention
Thank You Marie and Seth
The best insight I got:
Is to focus on a viable audience
How am I going to apply it?
I'm gonna define my audience by changing my scope that is 8x right now into a sniper scope that's 2x, btw my sniper's going to shoot flowers at them, so everyone's safe in this.
For Marie: You're the genius we need today really, and this show is the place every businessman has to be, especially startups.
You both are amazing. Every word you speak is a lesson for me to learn.
The absolute best 🙌👏👏
I just want to watch it again and again, loved it and the great energy between u 2
It's all about solving a problem. I like the sound of that..
