Nikolaj Rimski-Korsakov - Ouverture Russisch Paasfeest op. 36
Deze ouverture is gebaseerd op thema's van lofzangen uit de Russisch orthodoxe liturgie. Het contrast tussen de zwaarmoedige, ingetogen lijdenstijd en de 'heidense' euforie van Eerste Paasdag was de belangrijkste bron van inspiratie voor de componist Rimski-Korsakov. Hij schreef het stuk speciaal voor een concertreeks met de naam Russische Symfonische Concerten, geheel gewijd aan Russische componisten.

This piece by Rimsky-Korsakov has always been an Easter tradition at my parents' home. Though they are long gone, I continue to listen to this every Easter.
Spirited performance. Hadn't heard this work in a long time. One of the first orchestral scores I came into contact with in my high school.
Such coruscating beauty! Arguably the best overture from Russia, at least to me it is. A magnificent performance
Played with ceremonial solemnity. Excellent pacing throughout. A moving outpouring of joy in the concluding passages. A more than well-done performance. Bravo!

Anyone can appreciate and enjoy this beautiful music. But for an Orthodox Christian, who sings these melodies in the Divine Liturgy every year at Pascha, it has special resonance!
This work has to be one of Rimsky-Korsakov's finest creations - why isn't it performed more often outside Russia?

The Concertgebouw is a particularly beautifuls space bathed in natural light at a day time concert such as this. Too few concert halls have exterior windows.
The great 19th c Concert Halls such as the Concertgebouw/Boston Symphony Hall/Musikverein, Vienna/Victoria Hall, Geneva/Moscow Conservatory/ Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, will always piss all over most modern creations in acoustics and design.(There are a few exceptions)
Apart from the light, the acoustics is magnificent.
