huh, wasn't it when brian blew the manifold with to much nos, also just to let you know . hector came into harry's and brought 4 honda spoon engines.....
Hope this project doesn't get stalled, I'm really interested to see where this goes!! The cool thing about Lotus cars is that Colin Chapman was obsessed with keeping his cars light which means you need less power, that's part of the reason everything is made of fiberglass, I think these Esprit's weighed in around 2200 lbs so that 265 hp really made them scoot!!
That O2 sensor location is factory. I've never had issues with mine and I've never read about them being a problem, so I wouldn't bother moving it unless you have to for some other reason
24:20 Makes a bit of sense, Lotus actually started as a kit car company early to mid sixties, but phased into production models by the early seventies.
Team Chain!!! As the owner of two Deloreans, I can affirm that anything over 280 horsepower risks the longevity of that transaxle. However, if you address the specific weaknesses within the transaxle it should be able to handle over 500 horsepower. I recommend getting an upgraded input shaft coupler. It's about $200.
The engine may not have stopped because it "jumped its timing" but because Lotus has an inertia fuel cut off switch in case of an accident. You did mention that the engine stopped running after a "spin out". Hit the fuel cutoff reset switch and that may solve an issue. That charge cooler electric pump is aftermarket. The OEM pump is cast aluminum with a rubber impeller, that have a service life and needs to be replaced periodically. It ran off of the distributer drive in the middle, and on top, near the front of the engine. This engine has GM electronic ignition, not needing the distributer drive.
I used to work at Cheswick Silencers, Squires Gate Lane, Blackpool, UK in 1989/90. Mainly OEM parts for Ford production lines for escorts etc but also OEM for Rolls Royce, Vauxhall Lotus Omega Carlton, Land Rover Discovery series 1 etc. Was bought out by Arvin silencers (American company I think). Believe the building was originally used to make WWII bombers.
That pump is a conversion from a mechanically driven pump that went into the hold the distributer went into in older cars. External electric water pumps are a common mod, but if you replace the impeller in of the mechanical pump on a set interval, it does fine. Maintenance and Lotus Owners is a rare combo.
Had a 1990 Lotus Espirt Turbo back in the day in the UK (No Charge Cooler). They used to say that Lotus stood for, 'Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious' but I never had any reliability troubles with mine. That's not to say that I didn't have issues with it. 1. Rear brakes used to seize on if not used for a while. 2. Engine would almost or sometimes actually stall under heavy braking. Think that one is down to poor oil pump not able to cope as the oil coolers are at the front of the car. 3. Very stiff gear change after motorway miles and car hot. This is due the gear linkage being directly above the exhaust box and drying out the grease. I had some joy with fitting a heat shield between the exhaust box and the gear linkage. 4. Loose headlights. Hinge brackets loose on headlight units. From memory I riveted them back on which fixed the issue. I had the timing belt changed on mine during a full service and from what I remember the bloke at the garage said it was an engine out job. Looking forward to following you guys on this project.
That charge cooler pump is 100% aftermarket. The factory one is mechanical and mounted where the distributor was on older models. The impellers fall apart, so having electric is good. I can tell you from experience that these cars will run and drive with the timing out a tooth. You have two oil coolers and the pipes seize, so be VERY careful removing them as you can easily crack the coolers. There's no oil cooler thermostat, it's worth installing one to reduce oil warm up time. The Renault UN1 can be a decent gearbox, they are used in GT40 replicas. I believe that era are some of the stronger ones. The exhaust manifolds crack, so add shielding from water spraying off the wheel. "Cheswick" is pronounced "Chez-ick" ;-). I've done a load of work on my '98 GT3, with the 920 2L. Hit me up if you need any advice.
Had an Esprit Turbo SE twenty years back. I once rang my local dealership here inthe UK to order some parts. When I told them what model I had, they said "Oh Dear! " The engines are a nightmare to work on, everything is rammed into a very small space. Look forward to watching this project guys...
Make sure you guys replace the red hose from the clutch master to the slave cylinder with the stainless option. This is an Infamous known issue with these cars as the red plastic hose will expand from pressure with time and will not effectively disengage the slave cylinder therefore unable to disengage the clutch.
Once you get this back on the road you will understand what real roadholding is. It's not just a coincidence that most of the top car manufacturers have at some point paid Lotus Engineering to design their suspension. Brakes are small because the car is so light. These really do 'corner like they're on rails' at almost any speed. They are also very strongly constructed - don't let the flimsy repairs at the front put you off. The engine was the 2.2 litre used in the Renault 25 in Europe.
Lotus of this era basically were mass-produced kit cars! Hell, the first Lotus 7's were actual kit cars. The engineering may well be a bit patchy to modern eyes but back when it was all designed it was the lightest way to get a car that fast. There's a reason that the Esprit would outperform everything else in the corners: lightness. They're a bastard to work on though.
Yep, until around 1970 in the UK a kit car bypassed some taxes, hence with the Elan, etc, the kit was popular as a lot cheaper even if someone payed their local garage to build it. Although they kit was mostly built anyway!
when I was in auto school in late 70's, there was several Jensen-Healys in repair shops in town, timing belt jumped and valves ran into pistons (Lotus engines). Also I rode in one of these in the 80's, was told it had a turbo, that thing was a rocket! Reminded me of something like a F1 4 cyl
Highly debatable on belts being stronger than a chain man. I helped build an old shovelhead that initially ran a $200 belt from the transmission to the motor, and we snapped three of them until we swapped to a chain, and haven’t had a problem since.
Lotus cars of this era were kind of kit car-ish due to their hand built origins. That wood panel in the instrument panel really adds to that flavour! This car is going to be expensive, would you ever tell us what you paid for it? One of my favourite cars but the more videos I see about them, the more I know that I cannot afford one!!!
Apparently these guys are making it all in vogue to buy Esprits right now. I'd love to have one but too many other projects at the moment...and you really ought to find a decent example instead of thrashed. Parts are too hard to come by (expensive) to have to replace everything.
Jay Leno: "Having a Lotus is like falling in love with the wrong woman. It's just... you know it's a mistake, but uh, it's so exciting, you've got to do it."
Interested to see the build up of this as it's a car I've wanted for years(Any version from 1 to 3, doesn't have to be an SE.) The biggest sadness I've heard a lot of through people who have owned them is the notorious poor reliability but as you can see from this video, people spend ZERO dollars on there cars and expect them to run forever, if your not maintaining the vehicle or any vehicle on a regular basis it's going to end up as a 'non-working' paper weight every time. That's simple Entropy laws right there. Everything will wear out unless looked after, from relationships to jet aircraft, there's no avoiding this without proper maintenance.
The wood, oxygen sensor location and the exhaust are all factory on that, just a heads up. The wind buffer from the factory just stuck in with no fasteners or anything. Just sat in by gravity. And that charge cooler pump is aftermarket. Inside the cooler there’s some impellers that fail, not letting the over boost function to work. It’s a simple fix to rebuild! Oh, and the brakes are off of a mark 3 Supra for some reason.
Lotus were known for doing this, minus the V8 model Esprite, they really typically used cosworth engines. Never had a high top speed but damn they drove and handled like nothing else.
Suddenly all my British car jokes come back to mind. My brother had an 06 Lotus Esprit in BRG which is my favorite hands down. I almost bought an Esprit 4cyl turbo years ago but the insurance alone would have been ridiculously expensive at that age. This is awesome to see up close.

For the o2 sensor location, if using stock engine control mimic stock distance from the turbine. If doing an aftermarket wideband o2 sensor follow manufacturer specs if you have the room. AEM UEGO X-Series says: - 18 inches (45cm) downstream of the cylinder head's exhaust port or turbocharger
I just got through rebuilding my 87 Esprit 910 engine due to a failed timing belt. Just take the valve covers off. If you see one loose tappet bucket, that is seen by space between the CAM lobe and the bucket that holds the spacing shim, then a valve is bent and can't return to the closed position. You can check for loose tappet buckets with a pick-up magnet. If just one shows up, then no point on installing a new belt. Pull the engine and repair it.
@@chandrab Yes and I did it myself. I got into this mess by having the "pros" install a new timing that only lasted 5k miles. That belt had no markings on it so I have no idea what brand it was. Now I do everything myself.
Timing belts are quieter, more compact, more accurate, and require no lubrication. That being said, my Town Car and Marauder use chain driven overhead cams.just the way god intended
Great episode. Really enjoyed it. First car was a Lotus Europa in 1975, so I've a soft spot for them. Lotus were rare in Johannesburg, South Africa. Really wanted an Elan +2S. Looking forward to the next episode.
Restomod it like Singer does the 911! Modernise certain parts, but keep it feeling like a classic. The interior espesially would look awesome with a cloth retrim similar to the Singer cars
Just for fun, you should think about listing all the different original manufacturers of parts on this car. Parts bins around the world were raided in an effort to cut costs.
Oh man, I love that Jared's collaborating with smaller RUclipsrs like Tavarish. He's a good guy and deserves a nice RUclips channel of his own one day. :D
I kind of doubt that windshield is 100% flat, run a long straight edge across it and you'll likely find a slight curve to it. I've got 20 years experience in the auto glass trade and trust me that windshield is going to be a lot harder to replace than your thinking it will be. notice the black band around the perimeter of the glass? That means its a glued in part the band is there to protect the urethane adhesive from the UV rays of the sun. I haven't actually worked on that specific car before because they just don't exist in small town Canada but I could search the part number if I knew the specific year of it and tell you right away without a straight edge if the aftermarket part is flat or curved...
Your actually correct. The Esprit SE windscreen is not flat even though it looks like it. It's also a structural element of the car. The windscreen is from Triplex and can be gotten, but difficult.
@@chandrab Yeah, I actually searched a few aftermarket suppliers after I made my comment and found almost nothing for lotus. So that part is probably coming from the other side of the pond and not cheaply. Hopefully it shows up in one piece...
a lot of the stuff on this Lotus REALLY reminds me of the greasy bits of my Saab 900 Turbo SPG. Glass transmission, log style manifold, random relays hidden in the fenders...
The belt vs chain conversation is probably very similar to that in the big manufacturers engine design department. Many large manufacturers have gone from belt to chain and back many times.

thumbs up just for Jared's intro burn!! lol you guys are great, I love the content and keep being yourselves!
Is that front bumper made of toothpaste?! 😂😂😂
Ramen noodles and super glue
@@hydewhyte4364 😂😂😂
Toothpaste and toilet paper
Seeing what happened to this poor car with its previous owner wounds my soul.
Jared: "Are you ready to stick it in?" Tavarish: "Umm, I'm filming." I think we interrupted something!
For the o2 sensor location, if using stock engine control mimic stock distance from the turbine. If doing an aftermarket wideband o2 sensor follow manufacturer specs if you have the room. AEM UEGO X-Series says:
- 18 inches (45cm) downstream of the cylinder head's exhaust port or turbocharger
"this is work for two people" - as we all know, Jared is two people
Tbh, with the speed theese two work at by themselves, they could be an entire repair shop without much help
@@Ferrari255GTO True but Jared doesn't have the time to run his own successful channel, AND train this new guy, T-radish or whatever his name is.

Lmao this guy is his own sponsor
I just got through rebuilding my 87 Esprit 910 engine due to a failed timing belt. Just take the valve covers off. If you see one loose tappet bucket, that is seen by space between the CAM lobe and the bucket that holds the spacing shim, then a valve is bent and can't return to the closed position. You can check for loose tappet buckets with a pick-up magnet. If just one shows up, then no point on installing a new belt. Pull the engine and repair it.
Did you put a JAE blue timing belt on, so it never happens again?
@@chandrab Yes and I did it myself. I got into this mess by having the "pros" install a new timing that only lasted 5k miles. That belt had no markings on it so I have no idea what brand it was. Now I do everything myself.
OMG, that intro! Jared rocked it!
8:30 "I have watched a documentary called Fast and Furious"
Jared: "Aha..."
"Lodi is a town in NJ, you don't wanna go there"
Lodi has left the group chat
Timing belts are quieter, more compact, more accurate, and require no lubrication. That being said, my Town Car and Marauder use chain driven overhead cams.just the way god intended
Freddy "God has fitted us with uh two spares"... I don't think that how it works lol.
Hilarious video guys. That "dry wall" front bumper REALLY had me LOL!.
that into was the best hahahaha
Great episode. Really enjoyed it. First car was a Lotus Europa in 1975, so I've a soft spot for them. Lotus were rare in Johannesburg, South Africa. Really wanted an Elan +2S. Looking forward to the next episode.
Call JAE in California for parts. They have the car covered
Restomod it like Singer does the 911! Modernise certain parts, but keep it feeling like a classic. The interior espesially would look awesome with a cloth retrim similar to the Singer cars
Built by the finest flat caps and tea cups in middle England
Eastern England - Norfolk
Just for fun, you should think about listing all the different original manufacturers of parts on this car. Parts bins around the world were raided in an effort to cut costs.
I thought removable floors were a Flintstone feature before they ever appeared in Fast & Furious??
Oh man, I love that Jared's collaborating with smaller RUclipsrs like Tavarish. He's a good guy and deserves a nice RUclips channel of his own one day.
:D
This has been Jared's channel from the start
Wood is technically cabron fiber.
Say, 31% chance that it starts is 69% that it doesn't start. Nice.
Cabron fiber, is that a New Mexican form of carbon fiber? Lmao
@@davidcaruso4859 it's brown in colour..
One of the best sounds in the world is la 572ci Chevy big block with a 1071 blower and timing gears. Man that mechanical music will melt your heart
“Ask any woman 6 to 8 inches is just ideal” 8:02 😭
Pain
And in this episode, we see the difference between a man's 6-8 inches... And reality.
Wrench Monkey and Papa Bear together for many episodes to come. Look forward to them. So natural together without trying hard.
i see that hair looking fresh in Hoovers video Tavarish i will now hide my wife.
a lot of the stuff on this Lotus REALLY reminds me of the greasy bits of my Saab 900 Turbo SPG. Glass transmission, log style manifold, random relays hidden in the fenders...
That steering wheel looks like an early 90's Saturn.
Not sure if it was in the Saturn, but it was a GM part and was on the Firebird.
Good old parts bin. My mom had a 91 SL and I distinctly remember resting my thumbs on those horn buttons off to the side of the air bag.
No need to waste money developing one. They probably could've chosen a slightly better one, though
Wasn't Lotus owned, at least partially, by GM, in those years?
@@gillesthibault429 Yes lotus was owned by GM back in the mid eighties to early nineties.
The belt vs chain conversation is probably very similar to that in the big manufacturers engine design department. Many large manufacturers have gone from belt to chain and back many times.
Esprit doesn't come wiht an altimeter, it comes with a depth gauge, for when you go under water.
De-Lorean does not share ANY parts with the Lotus Esprit. Some Lotus Esprit parts were used, adjusted etc to build the De-Lorean.
