As you said the pokeradar generates shaking grass from 1 to 4 steps away from you, these are the rates:
1 step= 28% Chance to continue your chain
2 steps= 48% Chance to continue your chain
3 steps= 68% Chance to continue your chain
4 steps= 88% Chance to continue your chain
What's more is that you can further boost the chances by catching the pokemon you chained, it adds 10% to the next shaking grass, sadly even the best grass patch can still break at 98%. Last thing to note is that if you successfully catch the pokémon and the best patch you got is 3 steps way (78%) you may want to keep resetting for the 4 steps away patch, however the bonus from catching is no longer active with the reset. Despite everything it's still better to reset in that scenario. So yeah if you want the best chances you should stockpile repeat balls alongside repels.

NO F*CKING WONDER MY CHAIN HAS BEEN BREAKING!!! I've watched every single tutorial with radar in 4th gen until this one and not a single one said anything about the patch will break your chain if you go on the same line I have had like 20 chains break because of that and then also with there only being 3 patches and it breaking >:( this helped a ton though! Thank you!!

I just started playing pokemon platinum and had no idea how much in-depth it can be
I don’t normally comment on videos but this guide was VERY helpful. It helped clear out confusion with the myths regarding how patches had to be placed and made it as simple as “4 steps away or more”. The first attempt after seeing this video I got a chain of 40 but accidentally broke it by running into a patch of grass that the pokeradar spawned. A few days later (today) and I’ve finally gotten my Shiny Smeargle. It definitely wasn’t the most beginner friendly hunt (compared to starkly or shinx) but considering this was gonna be a one off thing for me I went for something I actually wanted (steely and shinx have good shinies but wasn’t really wanting those). I REALLY appreciate the simpler guide that cleared up confusion, and I thank you for that.

good tips bro this is one of the best vids on chaining with the pokeradar, details and everything and i like how u emphasize on being patient that's the main thing, and if ur lucky u can even get ur chain interrupted by a shiny pokemon on a non shiny patch, happened twice to me didnt get the grimer but i got a buizel and a quagsire

Honestly wasn't even watching this for shiny hunting reasons, I'm trying to complete the Sinnoh National Pokedex and it's getting to the point where I'm starting on poke radar only Pokemon. Was wondering if there was a way to make the radar exclusives appear more often and while this video didn't really go too deep into that topic it still had a ton of useful information that I can use.

It's actually given once you've seen all the Pokémon in the sinnoh dex, I was really excited when I found out as I started chaining before I beat the elite four!

Also thanks for suggesting a Pokemon with static, I've been trying to chain a shiny shinx and every time my chain broke I would spend like 10 minutes trying to find another one. Haven't had that issue again!

I just wanted to say thanks. I finally did it and got a shiny starly from the pokeradar. It was a shiny I didnt have and also the easiest. Im very happy now I can trade it to heartgold and put it in my team with shiny totodile. Im very excited 😁

Thanks! You need to beat the Elite 4 and complete the Sinnoh dex by viewing every Pokémon in the main game. (not the National dex). If you skipped trainers, you can't do that
Sonikks no, I didn’t skip anything. I decided for giggles to talk to Professor Rowan before taking on the elite 4 (but I HAD completed the sinnoh dex) and to my surprise, I DID get the national dex upgrade from oak AND the pokeradar. I did it just yesterday in my platinum game. I kid you not!
Used this guide and got to a chain of 40 on my first try! Then broke it on a patch that wasn't visible because it was behind a pole under the cycling road. But then got a shiny patch right after on a chain of three!!! Shiny Baltoy (the chain even continued afterwords, I've heard some people say it doesn't).! I actually was there in the first place so I could go get a nose pass from a swarm to try to magnet pull a magnetite to chain!

Ended up getting a shiny Starly on a chain of 2 on Platinum xD that was tears ago before that game broke, though that Staraptor was transfered to Diamond thankfully.

In the last few months, I've caught over 100 shinies via Pokéradar and I can safely say rules one and four are false. The rings go by percentages, edges can break your chain, but the amount of steps doesn't matter so long as it is in the fourth ring. If you caught your last encounter, the fourth ring patch will be 98% to not break. If you knocked out your last encounter it reset the radar, it is 88%. Ring three is 68%, ring two is 48%, and ring one is 28%. The only way a shiny patch will break your chain is if it is on an edge. These are facts from someone who looked into the coding of the game. So far, every shiny hunter I've seen using gen 4 radar is sloppy and wastes so many repels. I started catching shiny Pokémon with a radar success rate of 85% since March. I have my complete Eevee set including one for Sylveon when I get a new 3DS plus two extra Eevee. I have complete lines of every Pokemon I hunt because I don't give up and I'm very smart and calculated. I have two Tyrogue lines, so many Cubone, two sets of Ralts plus an extra make and female, and many more. 97 in my living Dex just since March. I need a camera or a new 3DS with capture card because mine was stolen with all my Pokémon and Monster Hunter games.
he's right. I've been radar chaining for years and I have never seen the "line of sight" thing to impact it at all.

Sandstorm rain snow isn’t bad blizzards a bit worse it’s definitely tough to radar and see normal patches and mount coronet is kinda tricky they all require focus and sight shiny patch isn’t easy to see in blizzard or in mt coronet sunkern I can confirm is definitely the most painful and extremely difficult thing to radar chain can break early my highest chain was 19 on that evil thing I managed to get that shiny sunkern but it was full odds instead appeared on a non shiny patch chain of 5

I managed to get a shiny starly at 36 stage of chain, but whenever I wanted to find a diffrent shiny my chains would brake when i was walking from patch to patch. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or is it a bug.
Ok so I was chaining starlys, and on my 19th chain I saw a patch that was 4 spaces away and not in my line of sight, aswell as the nonviolent patches I've been chaining, and I went into the patch, and I found a starly, and my chain still broke???? Was I just unlucky? What happened?
that happened to me too. seems like some of the other patches that shook went off screen. In other words, that patch you went to might have been too far from the other patches that shook.

Hey! I know this was from a while ago, but I've researched the actual odds and it says with KO it's 88% chance in tier 4 grass, 98% chance if previous encounter was a catch. Do you know if you happen to get unlucky, where the 12% or 2% case occurs where a chain isn't guaranteed to continue, but your random encounter yields the pokemon you were chaining, does the chain continue?

So, what if you caught all the Pokémon before getting the radar, will you still be able to get the radar after catching all Pokémon besides seeing them all?

Guys im new to poke radar hunting but my chain sometimes just randomly breaks and I dot know why - pls help. Im practicing on shinx right now and im following the rules, but randomly when i run around in the grass and use the radar to find the correct patch, my chain suddenly breaks... Anybody know why?
Got a question because I’m really starting to hate eevee, when you catch a Pokémon in a chain, you get a 10% encounter boost but my question is: does the encounter boost get dropped back to 88% if you need to reset the radar because of bad patches?
Yes, it goes back to 88% after resetting but can go back to 98% once the Pokemon is captured again. Since you're hunting in the trophy garden, it's even harder to chain due to the many Pokemon residing there and the layout of the grass patches.

So you can only get the PokéRadar after defeating the elite four? I guess that explains why I searched hours in Route 201 for a Nidoran but find no success.
You can only get after the e4 and after you’ve seen all 210 Pokémon

How exactly do patches in your line of sight or Patches next to each other break your chain. These have never caused me any problems, at least from what I've noticed.

Probably a long shot since this video is older now but what about the information about patch formations and whatnot that used to be in the old text guides for the radar way back in the day? Is there any validity to those or is it just anecdotal evidence?

Purely finding patterns where there are none. Each ring increases your odds by 20%, starting at 28% then going to 88% in the fourth ring. Additionally, you get a 10% bonus in each ring if you caught the previous Pokémon, maxing your chances out at 98%. Formations and patch locations don’t matter at all.

I've been following this tutorial and I'm trying to get a Happiny but my chain is CONSISTENTLY breaking before I even make it to a chain of 10 :')
Sometimes it breaks when I pick a patch that I was sure was good, but more often than not it just breaks while I'm running back and forth to reset the radar. I'm not running into any patches or leaving the area. I just run back and forth in a small area to reset the radar and my chain on the bottom screen will just disappear. I understand this can sometimes happen but it's just happening to me way too consistently. I was trying for hours yesterday and it always randomly broke before I reached a chain of 10, usually at around a chain of 8. Am I just really unlucky or could I be doing something else wrong?

If I decide to reset my poke radar, but the patch that appears is different from my very first patch I had started with, can I continue on or should I reset the poke radar to look for the same patch of grass?
