FILM DESCRIPTION:
After learning that his father is dying, karate master Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) returns home to Okinawa, bringing his protege, Daniel (Ralph Macchio), with him. In Japan, Miyagi is surprised to discover that his old sweetheart, Yukie (Nobu McCarthy), has remained single. Meanwhile, Daniel is attracted to Yukie's niece, Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita). But romance must be put on hold while Daniel and Miyagi deal with local bullies and long-harbored grudges.

I never appreciated this scene when I was a kid. I thought it was just a neat Japanese thing. As an adult, I respect and admire how (I know it's a scripted scene) she went through the time and effort to prepare a ceremony to let him know she loved him. From the moment he sat down to the grace and poise of making the tea, each one was perfectly done to show how much she wanted him to know she loved him. It's a humbling moment to know how much the character loved him. Especially when she throws herself at Chozen selflessly to protect Daniel with all her effort. Again, humbling.
I was a California kid who wasn't even 13 yet when I saw these movies.
The scene where Daniel's chores are revealed to be blocking techniques blew me away as I knew nothing about karate at the time.
This tea scene mesmerized me as I knew nothing about Japanese culture at the time.
There are actually schools in Japan where parents pay a lot of money for girls to learn how to perform this ceremony precisely & accurately.
Only in Japan.
(I'm 46 now & have been to Japan a bunch of times.)

2:42 The aesthetics of this scene is so breathtakingly beautiful, the Okinawa moist rainy like scenery, the voices of windy atmosphere,the greenery of it ,etc is like a blanket of nostalgia for me. Without the background scenery & emotion it evokes, this scene wouldn't be as beautiful as it is!

She was born in Okinawa Japan but grew up in the U.S. So even her Japanese doesn’t sound like the one of a native Japanese, from a Japanese standpoint. Anyway she is pretty and attractive.

I don't know for sure, but something tells me that the look of awe on Ralph's face was genuine when Tamilyn took her hair down. It's a reaction most men have and it's kind of hard to fake, so if the look was real, great first take by the director; if it was scripted, then kudos to Ralph for pulling it off.

There was a time, before everyone started telling us how to feel, that a culture was sold on its own beauty. Japan is one of those cultures.

You can see that she did indeed age over time but she looks as if she barely aged a day. My wife is the same since she's from the Philippines aka "The Island".
