  • Looking back at a difficult landscape and astrophotography trip to Kubu Island in Botswana in 2018.
I had a lot of trouble making this video at the time, so I wanted to try and have another go. This one was no easier to produce, being the second time I've used Davinci Resolve. I've been working a solid three days just to finalise it! 20 or 30 renders later, here it is.... I hope this offers a little something different for you to watch.

I like your slow delivery...too Will. Keep doing what you do and hope you balance sleep and work 😉 I was blessed with an otter appearance on my river walk today!!Take care, Bruce

Getting old sucks. When I was younger I had more stamina and the ability to concentrate on something and put 110 percent in. I would be bummed if the clouds came out and it prevented me from expending every last ounce of strength to perform a task, whatever it was, with 100 percent effort. Now I am old I don't have that drive, and have to substitute drive and youth with maximizing results with the least amount of thought process and physical, administrative effort. I have to plan better around more frequent restroom breaks. I bought an e-bike to quickly get me and my 600 f4 around the lake when the winds starts blowing in the wrong direction An e-bike allows me to stay in the comfort of a hotel instead of a tent and using lights on my helmet and bike to quickly get to my location to shoot before sunrise morning shot, or park the camping trailer close to the location and quickly get to my location. Reducing weight, minimizing my gear to only what is necessary in my backpack. Figuring out ways to minimize setup time so more time can be used shooting. Work smarter, not harder, not because I want to, but because I have to.

Thanks Stephen, really kind - hope it wasn't too much of a downer! I feel like I need to go back and do better next time. Kubu is a special place, I think photography has done a lot to popularise it and we probably have a duty to make sure that those who visit appreciate and respect it. It feels to me that fences and viewing platforms will go up one day and these thoughts dominated my mind when I was there.

Hi Daniel, thanks for watching! A lot of the time I feel I can be too emotional but what's the point if the places you visit and photograph don't matter to you?
People on YT really like technical and how-to videos and I understand why, but I also think we are missing out on why we take pictures and who we take them for. For some reason, the implication is that it's easy to figure that part out, when often it's hard.

It’s a very dry environment in winter and there’s no good grazing on the pans nearby. Sometimes animals wander by but it’s not very common.

Yes, I was planning on doing a lot more. There's been a whole saga with my wife's illness (she's recovered now) then I got electrocuted. It snapped my left bicep instantly and caused nerve damage all over my body - that took 2 years to recover from - this video is from a couple of days before that incident and it's the last overlanding trip I've done.
I have so many places I want to take the channel!!
We had an armed robbery just before setting off on an overlanding trip to the Kaokoveld at the end of 2019 - so that got cancelled. Now covid.
Let's just say that I haven't done any of the trips that I had planned for the channel yet. I still hope to. But the lesson is to seize the day, wherever you are in life I guess.

Hi Will, stunning shots!! I just love those moody Milkyway photos👌
You said you stack around 4 - 12 frames with each frame about 25 seconds. How do you do that without starting to get star trails? I've been wondering how people do that for such a long time. Every time I try astrophotography, I'll either get star trails because my shutter speed is longer than 30sec or the stars won't be as clear because it's only one photo.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  3 года назад

Hi, thanks for watching. I wasn't that happy with my processing, I also really didn't think straight at night for some of the shots. I want to work on the pics more and these were just quickies.
To combat trailing, you have three options (that I know of).
      1. You can use a fairly convoluted alignment workflow in Photoshop utilising 'difference' blend modes to see how to rotate and warp each shot. before setting a normal blend.
      2. You can use free software for windows that does a great job ( ruclips.net/video/MoaqgbQsAms/видео.html ) - for Mac, you need to shell out some cash bu Starry Landscape Stacker works well.
      3. You can get it right in the field with a star tracking device. But this causes issues with the landscape - so you would have to composite the tracked sky with a carefully exposed landscape.
I am using option 2 at the moment.
With stacking, while not a hard and fast rule, you can reduce the shot ISO by a stop for every 4 images - so instead of shooting 1 shot at 12800 you could shoot 8 at 3200 and 12 at 1600 - does wonders for noise.
Alternatively, you can leave ISO alone and reduce shot duration by similar stops, so 25 could become 12 or 6 seconds.
The ISO invariant or variant nature of the different brands of camera sensor also play into the decisions above...Not sure what you shoot.

    • @WillGoodlet

@@WillGoodlet for R5 he 15-35 do you think is good option or I should wait and see what else canon will release?

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  3 года назад

@@NeluCiorba Astro is a very specific use case and you should also consider how you will be using the lens when doing astro - moving around in the dark takes a lot longer..
I think it's important to consider also, what other things you want to do with this focal length.
If you are shooting only astro and nothing else, and you want the best possible results then it becomes a different choice (probably for this you would want fast aperture 2 x prime lenses)
But, if you want to use the lens for more than just astro, you will be thinking about a compromise choice like the 15-35.
The RF 15-35 will be a far more versatile lens than a dedicated astro lens but will probably suffer in terms of quality (Noise and coma) compared to an out-and-out astro only lens.
However, a lens like the Sigma 14mm f1.8 and Samyang 24mm f1.4 would likely deliver better astro shots but not do as well in other forms of photography (for example the 14mm can't take filters easily and the 24mm build quality is is not strong - I dropped mine the first time I used it and the element became decentred - in SA I could find no one with the skill to fix it - had to throw it away).
So, a lot of the time, dedicated astro/landscapers will carry more than one lens - a couple of astro primes (e.g. 14mm f1.8, Laowa 15mm f2 - even Sigma 35mm f1.4 and a panoramic head) AND another lens meant for landscapes. These guys would probably also be shooting the R6 or EOS-Ra (not the R5).
This becomes a very big question! It comes down to what YOU will be doing and shooting to determine the 'best' option. There is no single answer.
In general though, the 15-35 will most likely make a very good all round lens. Good enough for astro, great for landscape, events and good for vlogging. It's unlikely to be a disappointment to you (except in price!)
You also have a lot of options in the EF mount adapted to your R5. Many of these are cheap manual focus primes perfect/better for Astro.
Wide primes are often favoured in blogs and articles, but I feel that you need at least two focal lengths. 12 to15mm is often too wide and 24mm is very useful but can also be too long.
You see, the problem with framing in the dark by moving yourself and your tripod is that it is easy to trip and injure yourself and it also takes a LONG time.
I like to frame the shot and do final adjustments using zoom. This is quicker.
As I said I use the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8. I find this a good compromise for Astro. The coma is not bad, the lens is quite fast at f2.8, you can shoot it wide open. It's good for landscapes. Additionally, I find the zoom invaluable and it is moderately priced. On the downside, it doesn't easily take filters (but these can be used behind the lens these days) and it doesn't have image stabilisation.
I use it for astro and landscapes.
You can just as easily consider the Tamron 15-30 f2.8 which is also a great Astro lens.
Hope this helps - not easy to give a good answer to a complex question in YT comments :)

As the cost is not an issue to me in this case should I consider the final option 15-35 RF? Is this lens better then tamron, sigma etc ? Maybe one day Ill come to SA and have an opportunity to shot astro :) ... On the oter hand I kept an xt4 and have 16mm F1.4 [1.5 crop] which I think is god one too as a prime lens.
