Oh my, that cheetah sighting made my day, I don't know about yours!! I think it was on a scent - female in season maybe? or another male who had scent marked there? When his mouth was open he was doing the 'flehmen' response, using the Jacobson's organ located in the roof of the mouth....just like a domestic cat. Wonderful footage and a very interesting video too. Thoroughly enjoyable - and exciting to watch!
Yep the cheetah was a very unexpected bonus and wonderful to see both the hunt and the activity afterwards! I've noticed that there is often cheetah and leopard scat on these milestone markers. It also happens at the small local reserve near home where the endangered wildlife trust occasionally introduce cheetahs to breed before relocating them.

@@WillGoodlet yes I realy hope I can show my kids the beauty of Africa in the next couple of years. I actualy recorded 2 vlogs already but I want to have a few ready before releasing them. And I'm realy struggling with the audio that still does not satisfie me enough. I use 2 different microphones and you can realy hear the difference. Also I'm surprised that my English sounds a bit bad 🤣 you only realise when you hear it back yourself apparently. You can hear immediately that English is not my native language but that is something I can work on in the future.
Great video Will! When you were describing that dry/wet smell I knew exactly what you meant. I can't think of much that smells better. You do a great job of verbally painting the picture which just adds to the great footage and photography. I would love to spend some time on those roads! What a special place! Cheers and thank you!
Great video Will! At 10.34 min (fever tree forest) one can hear alarm calls of a vervet monkey - there maybe was a leopard or another predator around... Thank you for the great footage!

Dude, you are so frickin' talented! You should get paid for work such as this, if that's what you want. I realize it's quite possible that you just want to live a simple life, enjoy your photography, and share it with others without having to mess with marketing or the hassles that come with a major production company. You've got the creative talent, the voice, and the personality to be picked up by the likes of National Geographic or Animal Planet, I believe. Perhaps you've already been there, done that; and I'm just not aware. I'm loving this video, the music, the wildlife, the trees, and the meditative quality in all of this along with your peaceful and tranquil enthusiasm. This is phenomenal. Mind you, I'm less that three minutes in; but I'm blown away by these 2:49 minutes. I love how you manage to get the wildlife to look straight into your camera. I may be your bad luck charm. I didn't want to see the cheetah take down a impala or zebra; so, for my sake only, I was kinda glad to see the interruption of those colorful bars. 😉

I'm newish to video and just learning as I go along and trying to share some of the things I see along the way. I've only seen a cheetah hunting 4 times and only one kill. So it's a rarity. You can see in the video that his heart wasn't really in it - or he knew the impala had seen him too early. It was more of a gallop than a sprint. They are SO fast when they want to be. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and for watching :) !
Thanks! For my uses it's OK - short clips of 1minute to 30 Seconds followed by bursts of shooting. I was using 4K 60 + 120FPS 1080p at one point (which will be in a subsequent video) and it did show me an overheat warning. So it can still be a problem.
Terrific video. Actually been to all those spots in not too distant past, so extra pertinent. What was Canon camera in use around 16.00 with the big Mic on top. Lens envy but it’s out if my league ! What a joy, when the music soundtrack does not drown p-out all the sights and sounds of the Bush. Thanks so much
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it. I reckon the camera there was the canon eos R6 - I use it mostly for video. Yep sound is hard to manage. Most of the clips don’t have sound you have to record it separately. Or add foley - like the elephant walking on the bridge - that is added later

So chewing celery sticks to simulate hyenas cracking bones etc… :) Slow motion footage is used to make the encounter longer and to keep the shot looking smooth. Sound from slow motion is not always available (hence music in a lot of nature films) additionally the microphone picks up handling noise while shooting, so most of the time it’s unusable. You have to record sound separately- which I do- and then add that to the clip. Embellishing with foley effects. The entire sound is ‘designed’ it’s rare that one is able to capture sound of the event being filmed.

Thanks Will, I was just yearning for a species binomial for the African Hawk-Eagle and here it came! So this is definitely an Aquila and not a Buteo. I don't even know if you get buteos down your way, but anyway thanks for the bird field guide insert. I just "got into" birds over the last 7 years - before that I was pretty much strictly a botanist. So let me slide into that mode and ask when the Adansonias bloom? Lastly, the first 1:24 reached a new level of video for you imho. No voice, just perfect evocative music and the images speak for themselves. I could watch 30 mins. of that and slip effortlessly into a nature history reverie.
Hi Breck, thanks for watching and so glad you enjoyed it! There's a RUclips unwritten rule that suggests many will click away from videos with no speech in the first 30 seconds. I'm glad you stuck with it. The Adansonias start to bloom after the rain falls at the beginning of the wet season - the flowers are quite spectacular. This video was shot in October, before the rain really started. We've had poor rainfall since 2016 but this year has seen incredible rainfall - it would be wonderful to be there right now.

Never been there but your beautiful videos bring back memories of two visits to Pilanesburg - each time with a better camera! We're in the UK and fancy a trip to Leopard Hills one day. Hi Geoff, thanks some mojo at least :) I was in Pilanesberg last week actually. I was a little disappointed at the time, hard sightings in very long grass but now, looking back at the footage, it was actually really just such a beautiful environment. The hills and the summer colours are spectacular. I'm sorry I don't have any experience of Sabi or Leopard Hills. I'm strictly a national parks and off the beaten track guy pretty much...earning in SA Rand so I have to camp! I'm sure it would be amazing - high concentrations predators in those areas. Ability to extend the hours and shoot after dark and guides that know where all the animals are. There are obviously equivalent locations in Botswana & Zimbabwe that have fewer beds per hectare (less guests) and Pangolin offers photo centric trips along the Chobe river which look pretty cool.
When do you release the 'How to maneuver your vehicle with one hand while shooting with the other' how-to video? I hope the cheetah was impressed with the way you managed to keep Basil moving with him! :D
I never see any signs of farming in your travels, is it because you stick to reserves? where is the agriculture in Africa and how do farmers protect their stock from wild animals. Love your videos.
Hi John, it's because I'm in reserves most of the time. A lot of the time reserves are in very marginal areas - the reason they survived the land grab in 1800's and early 1900's was because they were remote and often protected by Tsetse fly (deadly for horses) and wildlife diseases like foot and mouth. Much of the time there is game farming (for hunting) and private reserves neighbouring the national parks so it's often a large mass of protected areas with no fences between them. A lot of the farming is also cattle faming, so it wouldn't be immediately obvious that the landscape is any different. All the wildlife reserves in SA are game fenced with different standards depending on the type of game inside. This prevents (most of the time) any lions escaping and marauding through farmland. They have from time to time though. Interestingly, it's illegal to keep any local wildlife as a pet but not illegal to keep foreign wildlife - there was a rather exciting escape of a tiger from the back of a bakkie (ute / pickup) not too long ago. There is more human-wildlife conflict in places like Namibia, especially in the dry watercourses of Damaraland and the Kaokoveld. This is where some of the worlds last wild (out side a game park) lions cling to life - it's a place I have only been able to visit briefly in 2012. It's a bucket list destination for me - have a look at the desert lion website www.desertlion.info
Sound is very hard to include. Most of the clips don’t have adequate sound because the mic picks up handling and focus stabilization noise. The shot is often telephoto - so the sound doesn’t ‘fit’. Also, slow motion - slows down the action but also the sound.. slow motion is useful to prolong short sightings but also to smooth out the exaggerated camera shake from using telephoto lenses. So music along with ‘foley’ sound (sound recorded separately or added to the track) is used. I’ve made a big effort to design the sound in the video. Adding samples taken from the actual locations in separate recordings. Or to accentuate actions. You might note the call of the lapwings on the mudbank or the footsteps of the elephant on the bridge - none of that sound is present in the clips, it’s recorded separately and added to match the movement of the animals. A lot of work involved in delivering sound!
Hey Will! For the ignorant (me), is there a reason that you had to be home so quickly? Like is it park laws or a safety thing where you can’t be out late?
Hi Max, thanks for watching! Yep the camps and the main gates all have opening and closing times aligned to dawn and dusk. I think it's partly to do with guest safety - although I've not seen anyone ever check to see if you are back and safe, except in the more remote Kgalagadi Park. But it's also partly to do with animal safety, there are some roadkills caused by driving at night/speeding (animals especially like the radiant warmth of roads in winter). The park staff can still drive in the early evening but we cannot. So there is always a rush to get back before the gates shut. The park offers two night drives, where you can go out with a ranger and see the nocturnal activity - but these can be hit or miss. The vehicles are big trucks these days, while in the past they were smaller more nimble land rovers.
Hi Will. I know you supposedly get more views from reviews/tutorials (and I have learned so much from videos of that nature, but I am always drawn to these kind of videos. I just feel you are taking me with you and I'm always interested in your thoughts. There's a bloke called Bayou Josh on RUclips who I have started to follow for the same reason. Hi Christine, yep reviews and tutorials really pump up the numbers, I just don't enjoy making them as much. Also, there's a point when we realise that a lot of the info out there is not really that relevant - especially, which camera or lens is supposedly better. The best results come from being consistently out there, taking lots of shots, anticipating behaviour and knowing your gear well. I feel unbelievably rusty at the moment, so I'm not sharing much advice! These kinds of videos take a lot more work and time and are much more satisfying to make!

Lastly, the first 1:24 reached a new level of video for you imho. No voice, just perfect evocative music and the images speak for themselves. I could watch 30 mins. of that and slip effortlessly into a nature history reverie.

The Adansonias start to bloom after the rain falls at the beginning of the wet season - the flowers are quite spectacular. This video was shot in October, before the rain really started. We've had poor rainfall since 2016 but this year has seen incredible rainfall - it would be wonderful to be there right now.

Never been there but your beautiful videos bring back memories of two visits to Pilanesburg - each time with a better camera! We're in the UK and fancy a trip to Leopard Hills one day. Any other suggestions?
Hi Geoff, thanks some mojo at least :) I was in Pilanesberg last week actually. I was a little disappointed at the time, hard sightings in very long grass but now, looking back at the footage, it was actually really just such a beautiful environment. The hills and the summer colours are spectacular.
I'm sorry I don't have any experience of Sabi or Leopard Hills. I'm strictly a national parks and off the beaten track guy pretty much...earning in SA Rand so I have to camp!
I'm sure it would be amazing - high concentrations predators in those areas. Ability to extend the hours and shoot after dark and guides that know where all the animals are.
There are obviously equivalent locations in Botswana & Zimbabwe that have fewer beds per hectare (less guests) and Pangolin offers photo centric trips along the Chobe river which look pretty cool.

I never see any signs of farming in your travels, is it because you stick to reserves? where is the agriculture in Africa and how do farmers protect their stock from wild animals. Love your videos.
Hi John, it's because I'm in reserves most of the time. A lot of the time reserves are in very marginal areas - the reason they survived the land grab in 1800's and early 1900's was because they were remote and often protected by Tsetse fly (deadly for horses) and wildlife diseases like foot and mouth.
Much of the time there is game farming (for hunting) and private reserves neighbouring the national parks so it's often a large mass of protected areas with no fences between them.
A lot of the farming is also cattle faming, so it wouldn't be immediately obvious that the landscape is any different.
All the wildlife reserves in SA are game fenced with different standards depending on the type of game inside. This prevents (most of the time) any lions escaping and marauding through farmland. They have from time to time though.
Interestingly, it's illegal to keep any local wildlife as a pet but not illegal to keep foreign wildlife - there was a rather exciting escape of a tiger from the back of a bakkie (ute / pickup) not too long ago.
There is more human-wildlife conflict in places like Namibia, especially in the dry watercourses of Damaraland and the Kaokoveld. This is where some of the worlds last wild (out side a game park) lions cling to life - it's a place I have only been able to visit briefly in 2012. It's a bucket list destination for me - have a look at the desert lion website www.desertlion.info
Wish I could see a video like this without music. The essence of Kruger is it sounds
Sound is very hard to include. Most of the clips don’t have adequate sound because the mic picks up handling and focus stabilization noise. The shot is often telephoto - so the sound doesn’t ‘fit’.
Also, slow motion - slows down the action but also the sound.. slow motion is useful to prolong short sightings but also to smooth out the exaggerated camera shake from using telephoto lenses. So music along with ‘foley’ sound (sound recorded separately or added to the track) is used.
I’ve made a big effort to design the sound in the video. Adding samples taken from the actual locations in separate recordings. Or to accentuate actions. You might note the call of the lapwings on the mudbank or the footsteps of the elephant on the bridge - none of that sound is present in the clips, it’s recorded separately and added to match the movement of the animals.
A lot of work involved in delivering sound!

Hey Will! For the ignorant (me), is there a reason that you had to be home so quickly? Like is it park laws or a safety thing where you can’t be out late?
Hi Max, thanks for watching! Yep the camps and the main gates all have opening and closing times aligned to dawn and dusk. I think it's partly to do with guest safety - although I've not seen anyone ever check to see if you are back and safe, except in the more remote Kgalagadi Park.
But it's also partly to do with animal safety, there are some roadkills caused by driving at night/speeding (animals especially like the radiant warmth of roads in winter). The park staff can still drive in the early evening but we cannot. So there is always a rush to get back before the gates shut.
The park offers two night drives, where you can go out with a ranger and see the nocturnal activity - but these can be hit or miss. The vehicles are big trucks these days, while in the past they were smaller more nimble land rovers.
Hi Will. I know you supposedly get more views from reviews/tutorials (and I have learned so much from videos of that nature, but I am always drawn to these kind of videos. I just feel you are taking me with you and I'm always interested in your thoughts. There's a bloke called Bayou Josh on RUclips who I have started to follow for the same reason. Also, I'm hoping to take another trip to Kruger next year, but self drive and self catering. Obviously any tips will be gratefully received. Thanks again
Hi Christine, yep reviews and tutorials really pump up the numbers, I just don't enjoy making them as much. Also, there's a point when we realise that a lot of the info out there is not really that relevant - especially, which camera or lens is supposedly better. The best results come from being consistently out there, taking lots of shots, anticipating behaviour and knowing your gear well. I feel unbelievably rusty at the moment, so I'm not sharing much advice!
These kinds of videos take a lot more work and time and are much more satisfying to make!
