- Episode 5: Wildlife Photography is about much more than cameras. Lonely hours spent in rain, heat and cold in pursuit of the shot. But it's not just the shot we get at the end of the day, right? You know why you do it. We all do.

My name is Will Goodlet. I am a wildlife, landscape and astro photographer working in the African Safari business. I spend my time exploring the dusty roads of Africa with my Land Rover, Basil.
I've been taking photographs for 40 years, first in Hong Kong, where I grew up and later to follow my dreams of a life photographing Africa.

Good one! Passion, feeling. Very well done!
Agreed Kruger should've been bigger....and...Cape Peninsula should've been one massive park.
If I was president...
You should have been President, I would have voted for you!
Another excellent video. I thought that the haunting music, Infinite Bliss, by Drift Far Away was ideally suited to a beautiful video. I really enjoyed it - well done Will. Alun
Thanks Alun, appreciate that!
Fabulous video thanks Will
Am just back from Zimbabwe in the Save Valley and Hwange - share your feelings
Awesome video again Will - thanks for sharing and keep up the good work !

Thanks for watching :) hope to be back posting soon
Hi will we haven't heard from you for a while,is everything ok,hope it is cheers.
Sorry Wayne. I'm in a creative slump and at the same time battling with family logistics in order to get into the bush.
Oh mate... dreaming of Africa because of this amazing post. You know that I love your videos and work... you never disappoint! Stunning images...! thank you for sharing the history of the region as well. every single time I start watching your posts.. I can't stop! Looking fro ward the next one!(s)!!!! cheers & thank you!!!!
A fantastic video, Will. Thank you. I'll probably never get the opportunity to experience and photograph nature and wildlife in the way you can. I live in the UK and I do my best, but it's becoming more and more difficult. Few places here are in their natural state, and it shows in the pressure that wildlife is under. Watching your work gives me at least some hope that there are places where nature is partly left alone. I hope it continues, and I hope the remaining reserves can continue and even thrive.
Thanks for watching Mike! When I watch the struggles you have to undertake in the UK to photograph, I know I’d have so much to learn - not least getting fit! It’s a reminder to appreciate everything we have.
I actually moved from the UK to SA to change my life and photograph here - accepting that my older self would not enjoy the likely financial consequences of that. It’s a mixed bag - the opportunity to travel is probably greater staying in the Uk as once you are living here it’s virtually impossible to travel anywhere else due to costs. But at least here the elephants are 2hrs away.
Outstanding buddy!! loved every moment of that! Mmmmmmm Sandwiches ?! What happened to the carrots!!! 😂😂😂
Impressive clip… Very few people get to see what you see.
Great video Will. The narrative is informative and meaningful. Your narration; relaxing.
For me, two standout images, the backlit displaying Kori Bustard at 5 mins and the lioness in the trees at 12.38. Both superb.
Best wishes.
Thanks Robert happy that you enjoyed it!
Beautiful and heartfelt video. I finally made it to SA in March/April and was able to spend a couple days in southern Kruger. I wish I could have had the serenity in my visit that this video portrays. You and your video have changed my mind, so if I ever make it back there, I'll give Kruger another shot. Thank you. Cheers from Maine, USA. :) Paula
The south can get quite busy, especially in the school holidays. Try to avoid those weeks and any public holidays if you can!! They do limit the entry but the road along the Sabie River has a reputation for a lot of sightings and although it's true, I try to avoid it. There are some lovely dirt roads east/west across the south.
The north is a different place. It's got different animals, and lower concentrations of big cats but a lovely remote feel.
It's important to take your time there. Spend at least 3-4 nights at each camp, because otherwise it can feel very rushed, driving to a new camp each day. Drop me an email before your next trip and I'll tell you the best spots. Hope you come back.
I absolutely loved this video. Thank you for posting it. I was welling up with tears at the beautiful images and sounds. I visited Kruger in 2008 and had my brother-in-law not driven us off to lunch, I could have stayed a little longer to watch the first wild bull elephant I had ever seen. I still don't forgive him. I also spent hours at a hippo pool, which was my favorite place to be. The lion at the end brought back the experience of hearing one for the first time and the vibration of that sound in my chest. It was shocking and wonderful.
Thanks Nicole. Sounds like you had a fantastic time there despite lunch ;) so glad the video brought back some memories!
Nothing short of genius, in your delivery & content. (part 2) & to top that, poetic too. you obviously have a deep connection & understanding of the natural world & it's movement. Besides the kaleidoscope of imagery & feeling, you have the ability to teach, not only camera tech, but history, & human behavior too (waving ) (haha) Then the melody fits !
Hat's off & love to Basil.
What a sight indeed.
love the kite capture & buffalo afternoon.
👍🏻. That has really whetted my appetite for my trip to SA in a month's time! How lucky you are to have the wonderful wildlife so near. I once saw a map which showed how little is left of the true wild in SA. I think people in the UK think all of Africa looks like the Serengeti. It's so sad to see wild areas squeezed out by urban sprawl. Of course we in the UK should get off our high horse having destroyed most of our wildlife hundreds of years ago (as well as hunting Africa's). Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts as well as the wonderful pictures.
I’m always surprised (and saddened) by how far the RUclips algorithm buries your videos on my feed. Beautiful video as always with some great shared sentiments of the purpose of photography as art, such a shame RUclips prioritises advertisements and reviews over content with substance!
Another good un, Will. Keep ‘em coming and, as always, I look forward to the next one. South Africa definitely on my ‘must go to’ list and Kruger will be at the top of it. Just a question of when! 🙂
We feel the same Will.....beautiful......and brings back many good memories!
Will, another great video. One of your best in a while, if I can be that bold. Great footage, nice commentary, and well-edited. Already looking forward to the next installment. Take care!
Always love your commentary mate, really introspective and makes you think about more than just what you're seeing as a viewer! Keep up the amazing work
Hi Will. That’s why I subscribed to your channel. You have a spiritual connection to nature, more so when it has a feeling of wilderness. However, there is a downside to it as you feel the pain when humans vandalised the quality of it.
Awesome and inspiring as always Will, thank you for making such thoughtful videos, beautiful to watch
Wonderful video Will. From Washington DC I have fallen in love with Kruger through your visits there. Thank you for sharing
Fabulous video Will. I sought your channel out as I haven't seen a video from you in months. Ţhought the algorithm was dissing your content, but I see no content in the recent months. I hope you are well & in good health and still have the desire and time to create the videos I, for one, have really enjoyed watching. Keep living the dream and hope to see more vids in the not too distant future.
I really liked your comment about capturing the emotion of wild situations. It’s a style I try to practice - but I guess it’s because I’m really a landscape photographer first and foremost. But then animals are an integral part of most landscapes.
I love your videos, I look forward to the next one every time. The lighting on the image with 2 baboons is so good, that one was my favourite out of that fantastic selection of images you shared. Keep up the great work.
Your videos always takes us with you into the wilderness! And not selling anything is even better where we can smell the fresh breeze, see every ray of light, feel the tranquility, most importantly enjoy till the last second of the video.
Exceptional content Will. Your narration and editing is spot on! Makes me so homesick....
I had no idea Kruger was so vast! Parks that size definitely give you the chance to imagine a land before people took over.
Kruger is an amazing place. Thanks for the lovely video. The wave seems to be a reserve thing. Nature lovers greetings each other
This is actually poetic and well worth sharing with the rest of my family. Great job!
What a poetic dive into this magnificent place on earth. Thank you for sharing!
I loved it!! crazy about the Kruger,, I enter more in the south end as I am staying there
Thank you for another great video! So looking forward to our trip to Shingwedzi in Sept 😀
Great video, the photo at 12:21 mark, simply beautiful.
Thanks a lot!
Thank you for a Great Video Will. You sure know how to stir the spirit.
Excellent video, very thoughtful and touching.
your videos give me life while i wait for my visa (4 months and counting)
Thanks for another great video and taking us on your journey.
Thanks Sean, a great pleasure. Appreciate the view!
Amen, Will!
Unbelievably great video- thanks!
Thank you!
In Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes talks about the studium (the photo itself) and the punctum (how the viewers’ experience can make a photo pop). Barthes implies that the photographer cannot have direct control over the punctum but your commentary within this film gets as close as it gets in influencing how your work pops to the viewers. Extraordinary work Will. I’m really looking forward to the next film and I hope it’s not too long in happening. I hope you are well sir!
Thanks so much for watching and the thoughtful comment here. I’m sorry it’s been a while since I published but the sequel to this is coming out soon.
I have to admit to reading a little Barthes back in my university days and have I been influenced :)
Glad you enjoyed the video and I’m very grateful for the encouragement to produce more. Thank you.
Nice video and beautiful pictures! I want to go there one day, hopefully in 2023. I like self driving to take pictures and video. It is nice to drive to catch nice pics, but self driving is not safer than the game drive? I like going to Zantania and Kenya to view the wild life and immigration, but the tour cost lots. the logs are expensive for family of 4. Thank you!
Hi Anna, speaking specifically to South Africa, self driving is inexpensive and easy to do. Kruger is very well set up for self driving (all the sa parks are excellent destinations).
When you ask about safety are you meaning safety from animals? It’s fine to self drive the only animals you need to be careful around are elephants.
For the rest don’t get out the car unless you are in an official rest stop.
I'm first time in this channel and I really amaze with the wildlife footage in this video. Big like for you and greeting from Singapore. Have a nice day.
Hi Cheiko, thanks for coming along for the ride, appreciate it :)
Hi Will, I echo the sentiment below. I searched tonight and was pleased to find this relaxing and informative post. By the way, in Texas, out on lonely country roads, it is customary to wave to others by just raising your index finger or two from the steering wheel. Almost everyone in the country drives a pickup or SUV. When the new subject/sky mask came out in Lightroom I used it to soften backgrounds but your soften function in the toolkit still works great in most instances. All the best to you.
Hi Peter, thanks for the message here and glad you liked the video. Good to know that country roads are much the same in Texas too :) I need to explore Lightroom's new features. I've been away from my editing suite for a while.
Will, you could video dirt for an hour and I’d watch it.
What a wonderful way to start my day,
Thank you.
Haha! I'll have to try that :) Glad you enjoyed it.
Me too Chips- me too, one day, all day

Eishhhh Will watch your back . Better still I will , when i finally get to meet you one wild day
Kindred camaraderie Will, smell the wild-
You're great!!!
As always Will that was a real treat, I love your videos and photos which are accompanied by your wonderful narrative, it's obviously educational for someone like me at home here in the UK and it gives great context to all that we are seeing and experiencing from your superb film making. This really is the very best of RUclips, thank you Will. PS the panorama of the bull elephant is fantastic!
Wow thank you so much for the wonderful comment and support! Really happy you enjoyed it and thank you so much for watching.
I love your Kruger video and stills. As always a great job !
In September 2022 will be my first South Africa tour for 3 weeks (maybe more will follow). Your videos help to get a little bit of the African feeling and steer me in not only taking pictures but olso feel the admosphere of the land. Thanks for that.
Great to hear you will be coming here Nico, it's a beautiful country. Drop me an email if you need any info about where to go.
So many spectacular images. Have been to Kenya but now will add Kruger National Park to my list of places to visit. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and insight with us.
Some of the herd pics were Kenya, hopefully not misleading! Glad you will be coming south though :) thanks for watching and the support here
Beautiful video and photographs.
Also I would like to add I am from the Deep South in the US and we also wave at other cars as we pass by, primarily when you are on back roads in the countryside.
Thanks Jason! Nice to hear - I guess it’s just being out in the country that makes people friendly;)
Awesome as always your content makes my day every single time. Today I spent my day working in my yard not my favorite thing but it must be done. Next weekend will travel to Pape region to try to find and photograph the European Bison wish me luck. Still have not been able to visit RSA yet however hope to travel to Africa later on the year wish me luck
Thank you Felix! Exciting news that you are going to see the Bison GOOD LUCK my friend:) happy travels
Your photos and videos do a wonderful job of translating your feelings.
Kruger is a world away from Derbyshire, but I still felt transported for a little while.
Great music choices too, really added to it.
Thanks Richard, glad to hear it. Derbyshire looks pretty spectacular, you must enjoy the landscapes (and the beer, stilton and Bakewell tarts...wish we could get them here!)
Pure awesomeness!!! Some day I hope to shoot video like you do, great inspiration 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you! So glad you liked it :)
Awesome video! I love your channel by the way. You are very inspiring and I am looking forward to your future videos.
Thank you so much Tom!
Love your soft, calming voice!
Thanks so much Lenie :)
Wonderful video. Your story telling skills is something else!! Wonderful piece!!!
Thanks so much Daniel :)
Loved your channel for a long time. Your experiences and the way you share them make me feel I'm there. Perticularly this one.
Thanks for watching Martin. Really appreciate you coming along for the ride:)
Excellent video Will brings back many happy memories of my time in Africa
So glad to hear that, thanks Pascal
Now I miss Kruger. Thanks Will!
Hey Will. Missing your posts. Selfishly hoping you return soon with your magnificent story telling and imagery.
Thanks :) building up to it. Hope to be back posting soon
@@WillGoodlet can't wait!
Waiting with baited breath. Hard to find true wilderness in the modern world. We just have to make the best of the wild places we do still have, and work to help people understand their value.
@@robgerety thanks Robert! In a creative slump, feel the mojo coming back slowly. Hope to be back soon
@@WillGoodlet I'll be here. Its hard work I am sure. Sometimes we just need to step away for a bit. In a few months I will be permanently stepping away from the work I have done all my life. It is definitely time to move on. It is a bit unsettling. A new chapter.
Hey Will, can you please let us know the date when you will be publishing a new video?
I will start work on the next one in a day or two. Sorry to have been absent so long. It’s been an exhausting few months
Beautiful adventures. Well told and filmed! I also love the atmosphere when being with animals and I know how difficult it is to express it. I'd love to do it more often and I hope I will. My thumbs up! 👍👍
O wow Will.... I love where you are taking you're channel. You've turned it into an wildlife / African educational channel. They should hire you at the BBC to narrate nature documentary. Your voice is so clear and nice to listen to. I think you're videos are just getting better and better. Of course you're goal is still photography but you are doing so much more. You are sucking is into the African wilderness and the only thing I want is to watch more. And the best thing is that you apriciate the small things in nature. It is so interesting to watch because we just don't know anything about these small animals usualy. Keep them comming Will like I said I just can't get enough of them! Greetings guido
As always loved the video.
Probably one of my favorite video's you have made. All of them are excellent but this one just that little notch over the other. Thank you and hope to see more soon. Good luck with the slump and challenges. 😉

Haha thanks Stephen, one day I'm going to find some dung beetles ;) Hope to run into you out there!
And who flung dung the fun we'll have too -Shing-wedz-we!!!!!
Love your videos Will.
Hello Will how are you doing hope all is well with you. I will pulled the trigger and get the Sigma 300-800mm f5.6. It been a long time since you put any content. I hope you have found a new place (home) and been able to be at the bush. Well hope to hear from you soon my friend stay safe
Hi Felix yes I am well thank you. Yep I am sorry to be slow not to put any content out. I hope to change that in the coming months.
Wow that’s a beast of a lens (I had one until 2016) it’s hard work to keep it steady! But with in body stabilisation added to most cameras maybe it’s got easier? Congratulations anyway, I hope it rewards you with many great shots!
@@WillGoodlet thanks looking forward for your new content best of luck
Hi Will, I need your input on the Canon R5 regarding sensor dust. Should I use Mechanical or Electronic shutter to minimize sensor dust ? Thanks for your help !
Hi Steve I’m not sure - I keep the shutter closed when changing lenses and so far it’s been fine.
My R6 had a big dust spot on arrival but canon cleaned it off for me for free. Since then I’ve had no issues. But no intensive use in dusty environments yet
@@WillGoodlet Thanks Will !
Always a pleasure to see your videos turn up in my feed. Great as always Will! I often wonder what North America would have been like if we hadn't slaughtered millions of Bison. I wish we had larger and more wildlife reserves. My local refuge netted 3 moose and a coyote with a pup along with a flock of yellow headed black birds last weekend. It's a pimple compared to Kruger. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thanks for watching Jim. They would have been unimaginable and magnificent. I wish we could have done a better job preserving it. I guess it's up to us to guard the places that survive, even the pimples! It sounds like you had a good weekend out though? I'd love to see North America, I watched 'A River Runs Through It' again last night, Montana looks incredible even now.
@@WillGoodlet I've spent some time in Missoula, so I know that area well. There is the National Bison Range about an hour or so NW of Missoula. Then there's Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks within a half day. The Panhandle of Idaho is also pretty amazing and River Runs through it like. Cheers and happy shooting!
Agreed, the animals need more habitat reserves because Kruger/Greater Kruger Parks region really isn't all that big in the grand scheme of things especially with the massive African population explosion expected in the next couple decades. Habitat loss is causing too much fighting and death within the lion population because so many animals are concentrated into smaller and smaller areas.
I don't know where we will get land for more wildlife. It's going to be a very different world.
@@WillGoodlet When all of the countries that are meddling in Africa begin to realize a huge increase in population is coming they would start constructing housing vertically...30+ stories tall residential buildings that have a smaller footprint and don't take so much land from the wildlife. Put some birth control in the water supply because each African family can't produce 8+ kids and have much of a continent left. It's already severely congested, check out a satellite view and zoom in and it looks like Indiana or some midwestern state.
I love your videos Will, and I think your one of the most informative photographers out there. At least the ones that can be understood without all the jargon that confuses so many of us.so thank you for that.
I have a canon 800D which I use for wildlife photography, and I’m looking to upgrade. I’m not sure I want to go mirrorless just yet and so I want to stay with DSLR’s. What camera would you recommend for a budget of around £1500 - ZAR 30.000.
I take mainly wildlife stills, and only a small amount of video, but that is interesting me more as I try different things. I use the kit lens, 18-55mm, Tamron 75-300mm and the Sigma 150-600 with 1.4x teleconverter. Also do you think it’s worth while buying a big prime lens?
I photograph mainly, Deer, Foxes, Badgers and Birds.
Any input from you would be most welcome.
Thank you in advance, and keep doing what your doing.
Jim. 😊
Hi Will, I only discovered your channel today, sadly, but I’ve made up for it by binging many of the videos! This video of Shingwedzi hit me particularly hard in the old feels. It’s my favourite camp, and it’s now been four years since we’ve been able to get to the Kruger. Prior to moving to Melbourne, we used to go to the park three or four times a year, now at best it’s once every two years. It’s a special place unlike any other. I wanted to say how phenomenal it was to see your video review of the R5, crucially how you put things in the context of African wildlife photography, from a car. There are perhaps 1% of RUclips wildlife photography creators who understand that this is an area of photography that is unique in its demands. I describe it by saying it’s like being in a blender and trying to get a photo of something through the blades, where you don’t control the light, subject,or behaviour, and you can’t leave the road to follow the action! And all of the action usually happens completely unexpectedly & and is over in 10 seconds, never to be repeated!
For folks watching these videos overseas, perhaps in preparation for a trip, I cannot tell you how accurate, on-point, and relevant these videos are; this is how it really is!
Anyhow, a long winded way of saying thank you for making me feel better for the thousand’s of $ I’ve just spent to go mirrorless, and for making me even more excited about our upcoming month in the Kruger!
Cheers,
Mark
@liquidlizard_photography
It was a wonderful video Will, which I very much enjoyed. More like that please! 😊😊👍. That said, I also enjoy your thoughtful and detailed approach to the technical stuff too. Best, Julian
Hello. I hope I will not look rude if I ask you, are you OK? I miss your videos very much!
(sorry for my bad English).
Hi, no it’s not rude at all. Sorry to have been away for so long. I have been suffering from some burnout. I am busy right now with the next video. Hope to release it soon.
Thanks for your kindness in checking in with me.
@@WillGoodlet thank you so much for your answer and for letting us know that you are OK! This is the most important, that you are OK - i guess, creativity does not work well with such things as schedules, so we will be waiting, when you are ready.
Awesome, just discovered you channel (through Gimbal reviews of all things) and very much enjoying the content. The shot of the monkeys in the tree with the sun in the background I think conveys exactly the mood/feelings you mention in your video and for a brief moment transports the viewer there. Excellent. John Pouw NZ
You are an excellent ambassador for South Africa.
Who doesn't want to visit or revisit after watching your videos.
Well, in the end I can only speak for my self. I have lived in the dense bush of Natal for some time, and watching this video I could almost smell the bush, hear the Sundays river and feel the sun burn my skin again.
I think I just ha e to return to my home there.
One more time...
Thank you Will. You bring back so many memories.
Wonderful footage and commentary - all great, but the lion near the end was the icing on the cake for me. I love the big cats most of all. Always learn a lot from your videos, and thank you for sharing them.
Glad you enjoyed it thank you! I don’t see a huge amount of big cats as the reserves nearby don’t have them.
Only get to see them when I’m on a big trip (with luck!)
@@WillGoodlet Ah, shame! But do enjoy them when you do get to see some, anyway!
A wonderful description of why Kruger is so special. Despite living in Australia, I've spent many months in Kruger. The longer I visit for, the sadder I am to leave. I could stay there forever.
Thanks. Make more please.
Thanks Miguel, will try my best :)
What a fantastic video I get what your trying to convey, you are very lucky to be able to photograph where you are and of course why would you go back for lunch!! It’s all about being out there from dawn till dusk, you don’t want to miss a thing 👍
Excellent Will, your photography advice and knowledge of trees, birds and animals is amazing
You have a big hart. U sorrow the pain of the earth, as i do. But we can not move the time back, nor change the reality of local politics.
Politics is often a charged word and even harder when carries. I did not know much about the birth of s.a apart from Churchill and Kitchener rolls, and the camps. Your vid sent me to complete some education in vikipedia. As i see it, the use of resources from all kinds in the African lands by whoever could was limitless. Its painful, but its the human nature. We can not change this more then changing a lion to be vegetarian. As a human animal, We are what we are.
Im glad u have this point of view: we share it. i do my bit through the education system in my country. Keep on those vids, you do make a change.
Absolutely love Shingwedzi, thanks Will for sharing your experiences
Your R6 are producing same great colours Will. Are you using your own profiles ? Thankyou for another majestic video, your in a different class
Amazing Video. Thank you Will.
Thanks Sean!
Peace, a sense of wonder, and a focus on the little things that occur in in the bush of Kruger National Park. These all evoke in me a feeling of nostalgia - such a special time that includes your magnificent videos and still photos. Many, many thanks Will
Magical!!
There is no better medicine for mankind than spending time with nature and the wildlife . The bush no matter where it is located is the perfect medicine for one’s heart and soul . Thanks Will for sharing your journeys . Keep well .. regards

Classic Will Goodlet video. Glorious footage and a narrative of passion and respect for the wildlife.. love your description of the impala. Appreciate the care and craft that goes into these - it shows.
Beautiful video and nice music and commenting from you Will.
I miss your calm voice and awesome videos.
How are you Will?
Love it. Why am I moved so much by the sight of animals and birds living in their natural habitat. Great work Will.
A feel and touch of the poetry of Kruger.
Thanks Daniel
Thanks again, Will - can't wait to get back to SA this year; there is no place quite like KNP!
As always great work Will. Thanks for the little tips you always throw in...so valuable!
Really enjoyed your video again . Especially the part where you talk about how you prefer to photograph a scene over a portret en try to convey the atmosphere in the hope that others will feel the same as you did when you took the shot.
Why isn't this on National Geographic or Discovery??? Hire Will!
Will how are you doing hope all is well with you. Just few notes to check up on you
Hi Felix, yes I’m ok thanks - bit of a rollercoaster at the moment as I am running around the country trying to find a new place to live. Not easy when my wife can’t work remotely and I need to be close to the wildlife! Thanks for the concern.
Hope u r ok too - any news on your trip?
@@WillGoodlet glad to hear you are on the move even if it is to find a new place to live. Things here are stable not much going on for now waiting for the winter and what things will bring for now just going out as much as possible to take photos. As fas as my trip still planning have to visit the states and my native country of Puerto Rico to visit family and friends. Still remember that if I drive from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park down your way you was going to buy me a beer LOL. Just glad things are well with you looking forward to your new content stay safe
I love being in a remote place and waiving to complete strangers. It’s like an unspoken connection for the appreciation of the moment. It’s filled with “how amazing is this !” Will, just amazing content, so well done! Living vicariously through your videos to a place that I would never see otherwise. I’m so grateful.
