For those wondering, this is likely a blown coolant line -- it is a known issue with the GT1 block (aka "mezger-inspired" engines) that goes in the 996/997 Turbo/GT cars, where the coolant line is secured with adhesive that fails with time/heat/pressure. Most organizations require these lines to be pinned as a part of tech inspection to prevent this exact issue.
www.sharkwerks.com/tech-articles/the-gt1-coolant-pipe-prevention-fix-on-gt1-block-gt3-gt2-turbo-cars
The best thing that ever happened to 996/997 cars was the IMS issue.
That way it overshadowed all the other issues that suck a Porsche owners wallet more than a 1st ex-wife.
@Lassi Kinnunen Weight savings.
The Wizard should have know about this!!! It can be a simple quick fix, drill/tap/screw .. to pin those glued fittings in place.
@@dilligaf0220 If you consider the amount of performance you're getting for ~$35K or whatever Hoovie paid for this 996TT and how otherwise reliable they are, it's not so bad in my opinion. Granted, it's quite a bit of car to handle and there are definitely cheaper options out there for track cars with similar performance like a C5 Z06 'vette or something.
Kinda funny when you consider the cost of pinning/welding the coolant lines on a GT1 motor is almost the exact same as the cost of the IMS retrofit on the M96 motors but no one ever talks about that, like you said.
Ultimately, i'd say that 996/997s are right down the middle for maintenance costs. Worse than GM, Ford, Dodge, etc for parts cost but usually on par with BMW or Audi. And way cheaper than the exotics. And I say this as someone who's dropping $1k on a new water pump/thermostat/belt on my 997S next week. This issue has been known to wreck people driving behind 996tts. Coolant is almost as slick as oil and actually more difficult to clean up, it can really mess up a track day. That's why some tracks require the pin/weld fix on 996 turbos, as well as running distilled water without antifreeze in it.

A lot of tracks require these Mezger engines to have the coolant pipes to be pinned to be allowed on track.

Common issue on 996/997 turbos and gt3s. Coolant lines need to be pinned or welded. I do alot of them. Can get 6 of the 8 without removing the motor but the back 2 on the oil cooler are almost impossible without removing.
I would not recommend welding unless you are rebuilding the motor. If a line has come out or has started to move I remove, clean the hole and fitting, jb weld it back in, then pin them.

Porsche used aluminum coolant pipe fittings that were glued to the block. The adhesive seems to breakdown with time and heat cycles. Under full coolant pressure and heavy load this can lead to a fitting blowing out of the block. That’s what happened here. As others have said you can remove the fittings and either weld them or glue them back in adding pins to reduce the chance of another catastrophic failure down the road. It is much easier to do with the engine out but pinning can be done without removing if necessary. Been there done that.
