I grew up Somali Canadian and I did not have any interaction with Canadians - white or black- until I started university. It’s a very interesting experience because within our own communities we are probably just pretty /average but as soon as we’re exposed to communities outside our own that is when we realize we are considered exotic. Unfortunately, for me, I didn’t realize that until I started Uni 😅

It’s weird when you grow up not knowing how the majority of the American population feels about race. Barely knew any White people and I had no idea how Black people treated mixed/ exoticals until I got to Uni. We were in our own littles bubbles 🫧🫧 lol

I’m an exotical that has 2 black parents but my mom is also an exotical and gets called beautiful til this day. I get hated on by unambiguous black women BUT equally hated on by white, Indian, Latina, etc. My own best friend who was Palestinian is even hating on me. This isn’t to brag because I don’t like it at all. If anything, in high school, I didn’t have self esteem so I didn’t know I was attractive. It was always weird to me that others wondered if my hair was real and if I’m mixed. Other pretty girls with long hair roped me into the circle but I was just clueless why they talked to me. I stayed to myself and it didn’t help that I was actually smart. I was the type of person that could fit in any group. I had many different friends. In college, the Spanish women accepted me with open arms. Today, my mom is seeing the same things she goes through, happen to me. She has a daughter who understands and I, a mom. Now that I accept my beauty, it’s wild how many races of women start hating me out of nowhere and how many races of men stare at me. I don’t get approached no matter if I smile and how nice I am. It doesn’t help that my body and looks don’t match with who I am and that’s an intelligent nerdy geek lol. It always surprises guys in what I enjoy and know about but they usually don’t know how to take it all in like societal rules can’t be broken: pretty girl can’t be down to earth, artsy, humble, nerdy, funny, sweet, humble, etc…smh

I feel the same way it was until I go to this side of RUclips that I realized I’ve been bullied my whole life for being MLS. I’m glad I got the knowledge now

OMG I wonder if we went to the same school! We also had a “diversity house/tower” type of situation.
Back when I was there, I was eager to make friends with other black women, and eventually joined a friend group of UADSB haitian women and there were a couple monoracial light skinned women in the group too.
Back then AIM was still used alongside with Facebook, but they used to make shady away messages about me or separate chat rooms, or if we were all studying in the same room talking about me and giggling over AIM or even talking about me in Creole!
It was crazy. I later dropped them the next semester and they acted like I was ~crazy~. I also had another time when a pages and pages of on line forum dedicated to beauty gurus were trashtalking and stalking me online. Weirdo behaviour indeed!

That’s horrible. Sorry you went through that 😢 University was a challenging time for me because I was also bullied my UABW. You would think that educated and well to-do people would behave differently, but the self loathing is universal, I guess.
