I do think Obi-wan beating Maul as a hermit was a different time. He was much older and much wiser. Maul getting bested by Obi on Naboo fueled Mauls hatred but also made Maul a better force user in the long run. I think back to order 66 Maul where he was massacring clones with just the force. Truly a terror but very controlled as well. Episode 3 Dooku and Last season of the Clone Wars Maul would be a very even match imo.
