Losing Buddy in a Fire & the Path Forward

- On 5 August 2022, we had a fire that burned down our house with our cat Buddy in it.
Once we have stemmed the bleeding and gotten ourselves out of the immediate crisis, we will do a memorial video for Buddy. There will be plenty of time to grieve for him once we have the situation under control, but allowing his loss to enter the equation would be too much to bear at a time when we have so many things to do.
Sorry for the crappy editing and video quality. For the moment, we're stuck using phones and computer videos.

When I saw your post on FB about the fire and buddy I almost cried. I'm not a super emotional person, but the thought of losing my own animals in a fire is something that I have a hard time imagining. My heart goes out to you guys, hope all is well and you get past this.

We lose pets mostly because their lifetimes are shorter than ours. But sometimes from tragedy. My daughter’s cat died quicker than he should have due to illness. I told her, “That’s the price you pay for a friend like that, but it’s is a price I’d pay every time.”

Step one. Get every photo you can of anything and everything at the house. Any photos of guns, electronics, etc. When you go to your insurance they'll usually just assume what you have and what its worth. DONT accept what they give you as value. If the only equivalent or better HK pistol is going for $10,000, Guess what. Yours is $10,000 replacement value, not the $1500 you paid for it.

Also iPhone, and I think android has a map feature in photos to see your photos by location. It’ll save you time over looking through all your phone photos. The purpose of these photos are to help you with inventory, and prove to insurance you actually owned it.
Focus on expensive stuff first.

The fire destroyed your house and took your cat, but it can not take your awesomeness. I wish you all the strength to sit down for a moment, listen to you warrior heart, and make a plan to get back on to your feet (however that looks or how long it takes).
You can do it, and deep down you already knew that. Listen to that voice (however small) that tells you that you can do it - and you will be unstoppable!

Awe man... losing a dog is hard. I think grief is the least thing we can do to respect their memory. You'll get back on track.
faulty compressor and someone might have jumped out the breaker/fuse in the disconnect. That is awfully coincidental that your house goes up in flame an hour after an AC service. Fuses and breakers protect the structure while the GFCIs protect life inside the structure.
That would definitely stick out to any fire investigators.

I used to own a Siamese cat named Simon, sweetest damn thing I ever laid my eyes on, I can only imagine what it's like to lose Buddy like that man, Rest In Peace Buddy... hope you guys recover from the fire okay!

Its never easy losing a loved one. Two years ago one of my cats decided to start eating less and less, over the course of about 2 months his lack of hunger and weight loss started getting concerning. When the vet showed me an x-ray with a lumpy kidney, and spots all over his lungs both her and I knew what the outcome would be. I took him home, nursed him along for another month before he started getting bad. I still don't know how I managed to call the vet to set up that appointment. To quote Macho Man Randy Savage, "I've cried a thousand times, and I'll cry some more too." There's not an ounce of shame in it.
I never had any sort of proper 'training' in moving forward through trying times, the best I could scrape up was a bit of the Dudes philosophy. Strikes and gutters, ups and downs. All things have their time and place, and it does us little good to allow our minds to stress on the un-timely un-changables we come across in life. Soon enough there'll be a time and place that's right to properly send off Buddy. Abide today, keep on moving forward tomorrow.

No pity here. I lost everything at 18 from a house fire back in the day man. Folks from church litterally forced me to take some clothes, and shoes so that I had something to go to work in the next day. Shit happens people love ya, and they are gonna get ya past this!

For those who are interested, I have something to say. I had a house fire 3 weeks ago. And honestly, I think it was a good thing to happen. No one got hurt, It was a wake up call for me, so I’m not slacking off anymore, it helped me get a job, it’s helping our family bond and come together, and I think we’ve all learned a lot. It’s a hard path, but its the path that leads to success, as long as you don’t look for shortcuts or a way off. This applies to many hardships in life, not just losing things. Just remember to keep going no matter how hard it may be. Because the hard moments in life are often the most important, and often lead to the best moments. Stay strong and stay safe.

Dude, I'm truly sorry! I had a house fire about four years ago and I totally understand what you said about military training coming back. I was trained in firefighting in the Navy and my wife did Wildlands firefighting after she got out of the army. We were able to coordinate getting everyone out, contacting 911, and assessing the situation. We were able to get everyone out (except our cat 😢) safely in under 2 minutes. The best attitude to have is stuff can be replaced and to move forward. We will be praying for you.

I like your analogy, whether human or a furball it makes no difference you become emotionally attached without even knowing. And I personally can't do anything to help financially here from the UK, but hold my own explosives licence with pride while watching your vids. Keep going.
