The Molotov Cocktail Launcher of Che Guevara

- Special thanks to Sightmark for making this video possible. Especially as we literally lost a ton in the fire. Be sure to check them out and buy stuff from them.
While we were browsing the deepest and darkest realms of the internet, we came across the documents pertaining to Che Guevara's molotov launcher. Seeing as he was a revolutionary and running on a shoe string budget, converting junked out shotguns into molotovs seems appropriate. So, we did exactly that: we took a junked shot gun and converted it into a near "clone correct" version of his launcher. Sure, it's slightly different in gauge as well as some other details, but it gets the job done about the same. Seeing as some of the other items we needed went up in smoke with the fire, this came out alright.
So Brian not Cody came on down to help us clean up the fire damage and also assist in building the Che Molotov Launcher. Seeing as he is an expert in reloading shot shells, he was the man for the job to get the launching charge right on the money. Cody will have to make it out another time to help only with the hell cannon. Especially as he built the last one. RIP hell cannon!
We aren't a history channel in the sense of historical characters but rather the ordnance used in history. So if you came here looking for details on Che's life, you came to the wrong spot. We def urge you to check out the Biographics channel for that or any other solid history channel. Jake love's the Armchair Historian.
We are right now not a full capacity as we are limited in housing so videos are still going to be a trickle. We did our best to get this one out and edited. Jake lost his editing computers and cameras, so it's going to be a slow rebuild. Don't worry, we will get back to original path.

Like the phoenix that rises from the flames, we have emerged anew. Well........sort of. We are still rebuilding after the fire. Losing Buddy has not been easy and it has left a painful mark on our minds that we won't ever forget. He was the best kitty ever and can't be replaced.
While cleaning out the rubble and damage, we managed to get a video made. Jake and Brian worked diligently to get this video out. We actually wanted to do this project long ago and never got around to do it. Well, how appropriate we get this made in light of recent events.
Once we are able to, we shall make a video about the fire, plans, and thanking all those that helped us. Especially everyone that donated to the relief fund. More helpful than the insurance companies, that is for sure. We may be biased, but our fans are the best fans around.
Hello friend I really hope that everything will be better and we all miss buddy
You should show the video of you killing your cat on rumble
What was the cause of the fire?
Buddy is ruling over the animal kindred within the Golden Halls of Valhalla looking down over us, never forgotten. Nice work on this one OL crew.
Could Gemini be used to run a ICE engine 🤔
Che used lighter tubes because of how his worked. His shells dumped out the shot, but black powder and over powder wads. There was a 3/4" - 5/8" wood dowell with a wooden circle at the top. (Like a big wooden nail) When inserted from the top, the dowell went into the shell casing and rested on the over powder wad. The bottle or what ever could be loaded into the big tube at the top. A rubber pad was used between the wood circle and the bottle. Black powder loads were used because the wads/rod sealed and took all the force. (I read too) It's great to hear from you guys!
Excellent clarification of his system
If you don't know what you're doing( and/or plan on engaging in terrorist actuvity) DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
Remember kids, never allow empty air space w/ a black powder propellant charge.
@@jmjones7897 teacher teacher! Why?
one of the diagram pictures they showed had a wooden shaft depicted in it, as well as the rubber pad you mentioned, though it also looks like there were 'retaining pins' on the side of the molotov, as for it to not fall away from the stick and tumble out just after firing? don't know, gonna have to do more research.
Honestly a 12 gauge is a lil powerful. Great job dumbing it down but, I would started with a 20 gauge and at the time period it would've been paper shells for sure which are not near as powerful or consistent. Kinda makes you wonder what the mortality weight of the user was.
Thanks for the further explanation. If that's really the case then I wish they had actually reproduced what he did. Theirs wasn't anything like that for some reason. It seems like they basically just made a larger version of the can cannon.
I love this. Just want to add some more history/ context to the device.
The design for the weapon premiered in "Guerrilla Warfare" by Che Guevara, in which he gives general instructions on how to conduct a revolution using guerrilla warfare. (I actually have a copy of it.) He lays it out in Chapter 2 (The Guerrilla Band), Section 3 (Organization of the Guerrilla Band). The context around it is he is talking about encircling an enemy position and assaulting it. He says, "When the circle [of guerrillas] has been closed to short range, the 'Molotov cocktail' is a weapon of extraordinary effectiveness." He then goes on to say that, before the enemy is within cocktail-throwing range, you can use the "M16" shotgun, shown in the video, to launch cocktails at the enemy. He also notes that Molotov cocktails are very effective when firing against a position with "many wooden or inflammable material constructions; also... against tanks in hilly country."
So, that's pretty much the cocktail launcher's more complete history. I would personally recommend purchasing a copy of Guerrilla Warfare if you'd like (or just reading the online pdf version, if that's how you roll). It offers a glimpse into Che's mindset for civil manners (hint: it's not as brutal as the title "violent warlord" puts it out to be).
Thanks for listening to my TED Talk.
I’m glad you put the legal disclaimer in the the video. I’m sure RUclips will in no way promptly ignore it and demonetize the crap out of the video since they are unequivocally fair and balanced.
It wasn't easy getting this done. I'm still without a home and working out of a friend's work space to edit. To make matters better: my storage unit got robbed a few days ago and so I lost the few items I began to replace. Never use public storage. Trust me on that one.
But, we are working on getting back to our regular schedule. The worship is built, the lab is just awaiting a sink, and the office is done. Once Sean drops as house over the ashes of the last place, we can go back to doing what we do best: blowing stuff up and making bad jokes.
Have a video you want done? Please, leave a comment and we shall try and make it. We love suggestions from the audience!
Hello my friend I do hope everything does get better for all of you I have been waiting to see how you all have been and it is good to see you guys make videos again
Really sad. First the fire now robbery. İ guess being a liscenced professional doesnt help against that crap.
Damn. At least you're almost done with it. You've one more hit to take and the third one's usually the worst
What all was stolen brother? Anything we can help replace? Just let us know.
I know the risks of using public storage. Due to circumstances etc I'm using it. Last time I went to get some stuff three units had been broken into (not ours) that we had to report because nobody else had.
Nothing life critical or expensive in there so if it does get broken into I'll be pissed but not crippled.
Buddy's loss was horrifying. Take as long as you need to talk about it.
this was a really cool video. Sometimes it's so easy to get wound up in the tech and forget what kinds of monsters used them, monsters turned into heroes by the terminally uneducable. If power attracts the corruptible, Marxism attracts psychopaths.
Man I love historical documentaries.
I'm glad you guys aren't giving up despite what happened. I'm loving the new historical content!!
For real. I was worried. Them and a few other channels keep my work day tolerable.
Lads, be sure to use metal sparklers instead of lit rags.
Works far more reliably and reduces the risk of burning yourself.
and maybe a compressed air t-shirt cannon type launcher for extra range.
Scotch bottles are typically triangular to give the bottle more strength. You could use that to increase distance.
Che will always be a figure of controversy. Regardless of whether you think he was a brutal monster or a righteous freedom fighter, he will always be a symbol. Viva la Revolucion.
"I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man."
Ernesto "Che" Guevara.
Good to see you guys back, I'm sure it's been really rough moving on from something so catastrophic so I'm glad y'all are making it. Congrats on the success with the mortar, it seemed like it worked really well for a first time test and prototype. Looking forward to seeing what else you do with it.
What happened ?
It's nice to see you smiling and having fun again! Interesting video. Many NEF/H&R single shots have been converted into non-NFA launchers for line throwing and the like, so it makes perfect sense that it could also be repurposed into a launcher for this.
Without trying to be rude: if you have to ask, you aren't likely to be able to safely do such a conversion. There's a fine line between a safe line thrower and an unsafe action failing inches from your face.
-update that HQ burned down
-update about a molotov cocktail launcher
...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMMM
Nice job making this work! That first launch went so well, it almost seemed wrong. And that firing sound is the most satisfying thing I've ever heard in my life.
Really nice guys, glad to see you come back. This launcher reminded me of the Soviet build Ampulomet, would be a nice video
So glad to see ya doing your thing! Welcome back and looking forward to seeing y’all do some cool chit!!
Great video Guys, thanks for making it and sharing it with us all,
Also so sorry about the fire and especially about Buddy,
Keep calm and carry on Fellas.
You guys are back! Hooray! We're all so happy to see you guys posting again, every time I've thought of you guys I feel terrible for what happened, but I'm really excited to see you're getting back in the game. Keep on keepin on!
Good to see you guys back, this was awesome!
Really interesting video. I love how you guys test things out in a safe and legal way, so the rest of us don't have to. Your channel has probably stopped people from doing some dangerous things. Besides Che, I think the Norco bank robbers used similar homemade devices.
This thing was so fun and so 'holy shit' dangerous at the same time. Glad you're back.
Great documentary! Looking forward to the next part!
Well done, gentleman. As an historian and an engineer, your work is appreciated.
need more testing of this machine! so cool!
Glad to see you guys back in action.
i can't wait for the next video of this gun, man. i love your contents!
This thing is sweet!! That second shot with the fire going through the tree was awesome.
Love it! Glad yall are back!
Welcome back guys I'm so happy that you're making videos again I'm so sorry everything burned down that you would work so hard for but I will definitely be supporting you and your triumphant return to blowing up s***
Awesome intro! Love what you teach!
Love the noises of launch and landing!
i'm glad you are still around. Prayers are still coming your way
it's always a fun time when Ordnance Labs uploads!
The best molotov cocktail is made with: Styrofoam added to the gasoline. A couple of layers of Aluminum foal to stop the gas from evaporating. Some steel wire to tie down the aluminum foil, and to hold a rag.
To throw: Push the rag through the aluminum foil, and let some gas soak in. Light the rag on fire, and throw.
No rag should be able to fall off with this method. And the gas is protected from evaporation.
Maybe reducing the size of the bottle will make it fly further with the same driving charge.
Greetings,
Jeff
Great videos, I know you say the video is “historical” for RUclips purposes but I do think it’d be really cool if you guys did do videos on the history of cool or forgotten weapons that were used through out wars/conflicts.
We are going to try and recreate as many as we can. Some are a bit beyond small scale ability, but we can make most of them and put them on video.
@@OrdnanceLab Would love to see a Japanese knee mortar video. I would get a ballistics dummy labs leg and see what would happen if someone actually tried to use it against their knee (I’ve heard people say nothing would happen all the way to people saying kiss your leg goodbye if you tried to brace it against the knee).
RIP Buddy, glad to see a new video. Much love you guys.
Nice to see yall back in the saddle
Glad to see you fellas are back!!!
Good to see you guys back feels for buddy
Love Sightmark awesome equipment
glad to see you guys back
I remember reading about this in "Mini manual of the urban guerrilla". And it even warned it was best fired by the use of a long cord. Reason: If the shock of the launch caused the Molotov cocktail to break......the person firing the device would be engulfed in burning fuel.
Sounds like a good way to ruin a perfectly good uniform. 🤔
Just happy to see you guys again
Hrmm. Champagne bottles have ludicrously thick bases, perhaps they could be the long-range projectile?
Love the historical reenactment!
Great to see you back 👍👍
The sound of the mortar flying through the air sounds amazing
I LOVE MOLOTOVS
Looking forward to learning more about history!
Gotta say a shirt with that PSA graphic at the beginning would be pretty dope if you're considering merch ideas.
Wow what an informative experimental archaeology video on such a historical period.
I haven't found any comments mentioning this yet, so I will add that Che's Molotov mortar is actually an improvised version of similar devices used in WWII by both the British and the Soviets until they could get better antitank weapons fielded in sufficient numbers. Both RUclips and the wider web (starting with Wikipedia) have things on the"Ampulomet" (Soviet) and the "Northover Projector" (British). Interestingly, all had to use an expansion chamber to reduce the pressure, just like our 40mm grenade launchers (expansion chamber in the case).
Glad to see you back
The quail numbers sound good in your area!! What part of Texas are y'all in? Have dogs will travel. Oh and love y'alls videos!!
Glad you back
Im so sorry about buddy! i know hes looking at you from above and judging your build! keep up the great videos!
Good to see you back
Thank you for the video!😜👍❤
Greettings from la Habana Cuba!
Glad to have you back gentlemen. Did I have to explain to YT why my comment is legal before posting?😁
You should make some devices and mixtures from the TM 31-210 Improvised Munitions Handbook field manual. ;-)
Great work Sir thank you
Noting like freedom . I love the sound of it braking
Great success! Very nice!
Idea! Aerial MEGA MOLTOV. Take a gallon wine jug, make a moltov mix with whatever you use and hoist it over your drop zone with a drone and see how much different it is compared to a beer or wine bottle. If you dont have a drone then suspend it on a beam between two ladders and pull it off with a string. It should give you quite a large fire :-)
Y’all on the come up with this content
Good stuff. I have the book that this came from. One of my Sgt gifted the book to me in 1990 in Bosnia.
I've seen instructions for turning a shotgun into a molotov cocktail launcher too. It uses a dowel down the barrel with the bottle in a cup on the end of it. Also a reduced powder charge in the shells.
Great vid! The feebs may have given you an A+ for the paperwork and licensing but i think you guys need to think of adding to your fire prevention. maybe getting rid of the vegetation around the cistern and the launch pad. no matter how many times the device goes off well doesn’t mean it won’t fail and turn the area into a grassfire. sorry for the nudge - dad was a forest ranger and he told horror stories of how some forest fires he fought got started. not to mention all the forest fires that were started intentionally by various GOV agencies for good purposes that got out of hand. you didn’t show it but i am sure you had all the water/sand/fire extinguishers you needed off camera. you guys always seem to have your act together
Hey, can you do a video on the Curie cocktail, a rag-free Molotov ignited by incorporating sulfuric acid and adding potassium chlorate to the outside of the bottle, usually through a paper bag? Would be fun to see a comparison to your second glass vile ignition method, even if i'm still mad that you don't hand out the formula on that one.
I think I could throw a Bandera smoothie further than that. Maybe there is something in Che's original design making it more like a spigot mortar with a rod down the barrel with the warhead on the end of it.
Awesome video
Great vid !
I keep calling the RCMP. Why haven't they done anything 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Love your channel. Wish there was more. Keep up the good vids 🇺🇲👍
We should go to Canada and do a video collab with them
Lmao. 🤣
Great Vid!
Your Chinese CodysLab knockoff is awesome!
My sargeant in the military had a molotov cocktail come over a pillbox wall and bounce off his kevlar helmet, i cant even imagine how fucked we would have been if they were shooting them over the wall using rifle adapters.
Love the credit to whistle boy
“You may have to explain yourself in front of 12 of your peers if you make this at home.” And that is a risk I’m willing to take in the name of muh freedom and good ol fashion fun.
Good to see you guys back to your usual spicy voodoo witchcraft
What a great thing to have for say pesky and intrusive visitors with a penchant for blue!
The boys are back in town!
Nice "mortar" design, but nothing like the Ché Guevara design. Those were inspired by the Hales rod-type rifle grenades used in the trenches during WW1.
Y’all should try Che’s Tin can grenade launcher.
Fun stuff!
Very cool guys!!! :)
Seven seconds from "We're professionals" to "Woohoo!"🤣
Very NIIIIIICE!
I find it amusing how much you established that you are licensed professionals, operating in a safe environment, following the guidelines....etc.. and RUclips still puts you on the chopping block. No bias there.
It reminds me of the British flintlock ship's mortar's used during the Revolutionary War era. It looks very similar in concept.
I have been wondering about this one ever since my cringy teens where I read Che's writings! Suffice to say I cared little for the political crap and more about the military/guerilla parts, but ey. Looking forward to seeing more of this!
You are cringy for ignoring the political brainwashed yankee
I took a copy of Che Guevara on Guerilla Warfare to The Army in 1974. On a locker inspection, my platoon leader asked why I had this Commie book? Know your enemy, sir.
Seems to me like you took away the right lessons.
@@Tunkkis So it would seem. Looking back at the cringe of your past means that you have grown.
-random internet wisdom.
Would be much more interesting as a sling shot or a catapult. You could get some serious distance this way if you can overcome keeping the rag lit during take off and travel.
Guess who's back? nanana! Thank you guys!
Mans launching molotovs after a fire
Interesting device 😎👍
I think you should classify this video as "Experimental Archeology". I mean, they can't censor academic research, can they?
JK.
Great video. Thanks for making this.
Man codyslab really let himself go in more ways than one.
That seems like its well within throwing distance. I thought it would have a much greater range.
I think improvements to the wad would allow the use of a more powerful lifting charge.
Question; would using a fuse (run through a twist top bottle cap) into the bottle, instead of a burning rag, burn more consistently and be less prone to separation and stay lit?
the video is amazing!
very cool
