I have just been to the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall where Ashkenazy conducted the DSO (Deutsches SO Berlin) with Shostakovich's Eighth (which in my opinion is pretty close to the Fourth in many aspects). And, like maestro Gergiev, I also would have preferred the audience not to clap after the fifth movement had ended - it would have been so much more impactful if everyone would have just sat there in silence until the musicians would have left the stage. There simply are some symphonies one should not be allowed to clap to afterwards - like the Fourth and the Eighth (and the Fifteenth, of course) and, for example, Tchaikovsky's Sixth.
after Gergiev backed up the murderer of Putler, he lost all respect in my eyes. I understand, um .. money and privileges are important, but not at the cost of human life and supporting the criminals. Goodbye, Mr. Gergijew, you know the Soviet composer Shostakovich, but you are a poor human being. Besides, almost all your musicians and composers have been and are slaves of your dictators.
