I'd add the Searchers. The emotions that play across his face when he finally rescues Natalie Wood... subtle and complex. One of his best pieces of acting.
I believe it was one of my mother’s favorite John Wayne movie. Her favorite line was from the little boy, “Mister, are you my grandfather?” and knowing that he was his father.
Big Jake has many great scenes that make this movie memorable especially the ones between Patrick and Duke. The music score by Elmer Bernstein was excellent. This movie was a bit more violent than others but in all still good.
John Wayne was much more of a subtle actor than most realize. If you really don't know his work, you think he's a one note song, but it's not true. Sometimes his face will change 3 times before he even speaks. One of his funniest lines from (I think) War Wagon with Ann Margaret he says "Baby sister, I have a saddle that's older than you!"...with that look. Reading thru the comments I thank you all for leaving Duke's political views out of it. He was an actor and had a right to his views, whether we agree with them or not. RIP Jake....
The Movie he says Baby Sister I've got a Saddle that's older than you,,, is "The Train Robbers"... 😎🙂😎 I used to think that was a kinda funny statement, but time keeps moving on, now I keep catching myself saying that to the younger ladies that come onto me...😎🤠😎
@@matthewlivermanne4441 i would like to know what she whispered in his ear at the end of "the Quiet Man". whatever it was, it surprised him and caught him off guard. i'm sure it wasn't in the script.
Richard Boone knew he was dying when he made this film. Cancer took him about two years later. “Big Jake” was the last movie Richard Boone ever did and he went out superbly. Wayne and O’Hara played off of each other so well in this movie! It is as wonderful a film as “The Quiet Man” when both of them are on the screen.
They do look good - especially for 'back then' but you also have to remember they are wearing about 5 pounds of make up - male and females and no HD cameras back then.
Wonderful acting. The facial expressions tell us everything we need to know, without words. Look at both of their facial expressions when he opens the box. What thought crosses your mind? Incredible acting
He knew that Miss Martha had never put $1,000,000 in the strong box. I agree. There's no way that I would pay someone after my friends & family had been shot, killed &/or crippled.
The best film The Duke made in the latter part of his career ("The Shootist" being a a close second, for differing reasons)... The gunplay and ultimate violence make this the penultimate John Wayne film... From his introduction while saving the sheep herder, to when he gives his derringer to his grandson... Classic American old west character!
I really like the conspiring glance they give each other when he opens the strongbox and sees what is inside. It pays off later in the movie when we find out what is really in the box. It is then you realize what she meant by, "giving them exactly what they've ask for." She didn't mean "pay the ransom". She meant "kill them".
I agree with that. I saw this movie in the theatres with my dad. Everybody in the theatre laughed their ass off when Dukes face appeared. Perhaps the creator of this vid is unaware that Wayne and O'Hara had played bickering marriage partners in previous movies
The truly funny thing is to look at footage of Ethan Wayne, who played Little Jake in this movie, and see how much he looks like his father today! Ethan the John Wayne Museum in Arizona. He is about 63 and probably about 230 lb you don't need a DNA check to tell you who his father is!

I swear, if you put John Wayne and Johnny Cash in the same room...well, I don't think that all of the American's could muster up enough testosterone to match that. Real Americans
"Where the hell did you dig him up?" James, to his mother from the book of the movie. "From a million acre ranch in Mexico!" she replies...always thought that line should have been IN the movie! P.S. what REALLY blows my mind is how much ETHAN Wayne (Little Jake) looks like his dad now!
I remember reading somewhere, years ago, that the dog was one of the dogs to portray Lassie. It's fur was colored to look darker because the Lassie people didn't want to ruin the image of Lassie as a wholesome, friendly dog. I've wondered if the dog that was Wayne's sidekick in the movie Hondo was also an acting dog from the Lassie line.
I never get tired of this movie
I'm in my 70s now and I've seen many John Wayne movies. This is one of the best.
Me too
The best one is always the one I'm watching. He's got so many I really couldn't pick a favorite. They don't make good movies anymore.
One of my favorite John Wayne movies. I love that Wayne's actual sons played his boys in this.
Hands down one of the best Movies Mr. John Wayne made. My Mom and I could sit down and watch this and “ The Cowboys” forever.
his 2 best imo.
Me too, Love John Wayne, never get tires of him.
So can I - love John Wayne.
Yep. “Donovan’s Reef, The Quiet Man.” Perfection.
When I watched John Wayne as a kid I didn't want to be an actor, just a solid honest man like him.
Maureen O'Hara 👩🦰 giant of an actress 💚💚💚🖼
The best character intro of any movie of all time...
Richard Boone plays a great bad guy.
One of my favorite John Wayne films! Boone is fantastic in this film! ☮️🖖🏽
Its awesome how it takes 2 guys to carry in the strongbox, then the Duke carries it out by himself.
DOG was the best part of the movie!
100% classic! Grew up watching this movie. Seen it no less than 100 times. Wayne is the greatest.
You are right, God I miss him.
My son is named Jacob because of this movie.
I agree
Gotta love those "bullet" bras women wore back then.
I watched it over n over at my grandparents
The look when she gives him the boy's hat 😅😅😅
I've no clue why I love this movie so much & always had!
An absolute marvelous movie! IMO, one of his best! I love the hanging scene!
WE THE PEOPLE could use a man with the DUKES sentiments as part of the UNITED STATES LEADERSHIP in these troubling times .
Great movie, all time classic ! Named my first son Jake, love John Wayne! 💙🇺🇸
One of the best John Wayne movies I have ever seen
When I was young, I did not enjoy John Wayne's movies
But now, I enjoy many of the clips.
Big Jake has many great scenes that make this movie memorable especially the ones between Patrick and Duke. The music score by Elmer Bernstein was excellent. This movie was a bit more violent than others but in all still good.
Every John Wayne had class every one of them!!!
Daddy?
DADDY!
One great actor
Bob Barber was a lawyer Good Guy.
Wayne's response to the Wild Bunch and his outrage at seeing bandits and killers identified as heroes. God bless John Wayne.
Great movie! My son is named after Big Jake.
Named my son after his character Jacob. He was always my favorite .
So did I.
My all-time favorite Duke movie.
"we don't have any choice but to give them what they asked for". ....... she woke up and chose violence

He did raise three good sons who made something of themselves, many of his contemporaries failed. That counts for a lot.

I always considered it interesting how Wayne and O'Hara could play estranged couples who manage to maintain a passion for each other.
They were an acting duo who understood one another.
I think they were actually in love and had much respect for each other
They were great actors and best friends.

@paulmiddleton4215 The Quiet Man is my favorite all time film.
It is harsh and unpleasant kind of business and will need a harsh and unpleasant kind of man! I love that shit!
Wayne was 62, Boone 54 and even though she was 51 at the time of this film, Maureen O'Hara looked 20 years younger than them.
@Thomas Dailey his name is Ethan, look him up on the Internet he looks like his dad today!

The Dukes best movie!
John Wayne, the Best. Não existem mais John Waynes, nem Ronald Reagan, nem Mauren Oharas.

Making the Duke mad was not wise, angering Maureen O'Hare was lethal...
The airport isn't named for her.

Love those double barrels. Great movie.
I like how they refer to Mr.McCandles as "himself". In other words, the great one.

I don't think John Wayne was none too happy with the choice of hats for the boy
I think the baby sister line is from True Grit. He calles young Mattie baby sister throughout the movie.
