Actually, 25 UK universities bring 34% of their incomes from foreign (and immigrant) students who account for 12% of their total students. Foreign students pay 3 times what british pay, parents of those immigrants (some of whom I personally know), had their parents' properties (mostly land) leased to a bank to get the money and study in western (mostly British and American) universities, a great wealth transfer from poor countries to rich countries.
Now, after immigrations were greatly halted by the tories, these british universities are going bankrupt

It might make loads of money, but huge numbers of foreign students bring their families over and getting a two year work visa has put huge externalities on university towns around the UK. I'd have as many foreign students as possible, but no family members and no guaranteed work visas.

The UK universities are pricing themselves out of the foreign student market.

Pricing themselves out of all markets at this rate!

Let the universities in deficit fail! No bailouts!
That said, domestic student fees should be allowed to rise with inflation but there are many other issues there with an over production of graduates anyway.

If fees had risen with inflation then they're wouldn't be a crisis. Only 2 our of 140 would be in deficit.

I work for a small tax consulting and accounting firm in Germany. We provide general office services to our clients too, like real estate management and general, odd stuff.
One of our clients is a wealthy old man who's son lives in Thailand and has family there. One of his half-Thai daughters just turned 18 and she wanted to study in the USA, so her rich grandpa called us up and I got the job of finding a university for the young princess and arrange everything. Turned out she wouldn't get a visa because the US authorities didn't believe that she would leave again after the visa ran out.
Quite strange with their otherwise completely open border, but OK.
So Plan B was to study in London, which she is allowed to, but I have no idea how that is supposed to work out, since she is either too lazy or incapable to do anything on her own, even filling out some forms or rent a apartment. She just whines at her granddad and he hires us and throws money at the problem.
For example, he didn't feel like providing details over where his money comes from to be the guarantor for her apartment (x), so he just had me negotiate with the realtor to pay the rent for 3 years up front, for a fancy apartment in central London.
If that would have failed, he probably would just have bought a place.
The point being that it seems to me that British universities don't care that much about the caliber of their students, as long as they have money.
Then again... obviously it doesn't matter what grades some rich airhead princess gets in her Fine Arts and Design degree.
As Gavin McInnes often says, ivy league universities are all about eugenics. The rich send their kids there not to get degrees, but to hook up with other rich kids.
    (x) No, he is not a criminal, not even a tax evader. Like all old Germans, he is just private and secretive about such stuff and our accountants were glad that they didn't have to write a list of all the dumb little investments he has.
He used to be the CEO of a large supermarket chain before retiring and he still is in all sorts of grocery investments, like a startup that makes vegan milk out of potatoes and the such, but it is all small stuff, a few thousands here, 5 figures there.

Yeah but you also need to understand that in many non-western cultures, putting up a good face and looking like you're succesful is more valuable than actualy being succesful.
The ideas of meritocracy and individualism are western inventions and nobody except us care about them. For her Thai family, it might be very important that she has any degree from any prestigious institution, maybe to find a husband and otherwise further the family's greater good. Getting prestige for your family is infinitely more important than actualy learning anything at school. What I mean to say is, UK universities are using their reputations to milk this kind of students for all their worth by design, they know about it and they don't care.

Useless degrees such as Modern Languages, Creative Writing and Film Studies should be closed for good. Such degrees are designed for the most incompetent and disengaged students (and taught by equally incompetent “professors”!).

Also, the expenditure of universities is ridiculous and could be massively reduced. They could halve the number of facilities, hold more lectures online, and have in-person learning focused more on groupwork and workshops which actually provide value.

If you want a good laugh, check out the multi tiered software packages that most universities run on.
