Thank you so much mate for sharing your diagnosis. I was going crazy chasing every rabbit hole and spending so much time and money. Nobody could diagnose the problem until I came across your video. That was the exact problem. A broken tooth on the crank sprocket which threw a false signal on the crank angle sensor after the mechanic had replaced the front end seal.
Usually the most insignificant things are the ones with the outmost importance. A good mechanic observes these things; most people just 'look' for the problems. I'll keep an eye on my Forrester for things like this. Thank you very much!!
Thanks mate , I have been scratching my head over the same problem and symptoms exactly , I opened the cover and found out the same thing exactly a broken tooth , thanks again you saved me heaps of tinkering
Interesting,,, been chasing down the same problem on my car, a few months after putting in a new motor the idle went to 500. Thank you for posting I'll check into it as soon as I can. This may be just the trick to fix my car.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I have an 08 outback with similar symptoms. Rough/low idle no air. Recently had timing belt replaced along with water pump. Going to take a peek and see if I have the same broken tooth. You are a true professional!
you"ll need to remove the timing belt covers which will require removing the fanbellts and the crank pulley which can be a pain if you don't have the tools. In the video we had already removed the covers so we could watch the belt while the car was running.
@PT Precision Automotive Errr, no. To see a possible missing tooth a person would simply remove the crank sensor & get a little dentist's mirror to look in to the hole whilst turning over by hand. No need to remove anything. Same thing for the cam sensor hole, to count triggers on the back of the cam pulley.
I just did a full rebuild on a 2009 Impreza with the same engine. I've got the same issue. I'm looking forward to pulling the timing cover to inspect it -- I actually might just pull the crank sensor and shine a light whilst turning it over with a wrench to confirm that the teeth are ok. Thanks so much for this tip; You might have saved the day!
The teeth were fine on it, but your information will always be considered when I find a strange idle. It turned out that the air sensor needed to be cleaned out and there was a slight vacuum leak from a cracked PCV hose. The A/C was resolved by adding a little more charge to it, but I'm noticing that the fuse is getting close to pulling too much amperage, pointing to the clutch going out. When the A/C is activated, the Suby seems to struggle to recalibrate.
That gear was broken by the garage that changed the timing belt. They warn to be careful when working with that sprocket. Those teeth dont just break for no reason.
That is one informative video , thank you. I wonder if you checked the crank , cam correlation on a scope , would you have seen the missing tooth ? Would have been nice .. thanks again.
Hello. Thank you very much for your informative sharing. Please continue because these posts are very important. I have a problem. I am getting P0607 throttle control system circuit range performance error in my 2006 model Subaru forester 2.0 model without turbo. When I clear this fault from the ECU, a relay sound comes from behind the glove box on the passenger side and my error code comes back again. What should I do at this stage? Thank you very much for your help.
Good job. Well done. I have a slightly different issue - high and fluctuating idle 1500-2000 mind of its own, and also has a flatspot on acceleration mid rev range, before it takes off then feel a bit limited. Replaced spark plugs, maf sensor, idle control sensors, vacuums hoses already but no effect. Any ideas? Maybe its a timing component problem too?
I know that this an old vid but i did bend a tooth, it hasn't broken right off but it is at 45 deg angle. Runs ok, just the idle is hunting around and the ac is not cycling. Think that it could be sensitive enough that a bent tooth could do this?
Just had timing belt and all replaced last week. Car just started having engine vibrations at idle/stop after getting an oil change. Might have to take it back to them?
So my mechanic changed my cam seals while the motor was off along with other gaskets and seals. Go back to recharge my a/c , works lovely the first night (last Friday night) , I go to drive it Sunday, only works for a little then I get a odd up/down idle on my rpms/ boost gauge and a/c dies after 5 mins. This only happens when I hit a/c on, once I turn it off, normal idle. 🤔😩☀️ It’s 105 in NJ today 🥵
@@PTPrecisionAutomotive similar I’m guessing but in this case it’s only when I turn on the A/C that I get cold air for a couple mins then the abnormal idle / hot air 🤔
I am having the same problem but the AC is working ok when I am driving the car. It stops when the engine is at idle. Can you please clarify if the AC was working normally while driving? I haven't check the trigger wheel behind the pulley but in case the trigger wheel is fine, do you think that this may happen due to a faulty CAM sensor? Thanks.
Forgot to mention that there is a problem with my left FAN and does not start. Could this be also the issue? I mean the system see that the condenser temp does not decrease and cuts off the AC clutch?

You sir deserve a large beer for figuring this out. I bet this has solved a vexing problem for many people!

Brilliant find for an annoying problem well done

were you able to get on top of the problem? Just curious as to what it was.

Goodonyamate, thanks for your tenacity. My 2002 Forester is behaving the same way, so under the bonnet I go! hahahaha.
Thank you for this very informative video. Lately having idling problems when AC is on with my 2011 Forester. Will check this out. Cheers!
Yep all good.

Those don’t just break easily someone pried on it during a service and snapped it off.
Wow respect... Rly helpful for everyone.... Yea beer with Barbecue. 😊
Cheers for sharing.
Bloody ripper good job.
Thanks mate.

You should have someone look into it.
Thanku
on cold start up, no misfire, only happens once engine is warm. is there some way of changing the maps to compensate for a missing tooth?
no

mmmm. not sure mate happy to have a look at it thou, put a vacuum gauge on it.

hahaah. yeah i recon mate. Change it. it has to be straight.

yeah I'd take it back and get them to have a look.
Same issie 05 outback turbo
hi mate just wondering this rough idle does it start once it's warmed up or is it something that happens from the start
was all the time

Yes A/C was working while driving, no the cam sensor would not be faulty
Sir,I have the same and fixed it,thanks alot, but the idling still lower 0.5rpm
Do a relearn via scan tool
Good ya sorted problem, but that XC Falcon looks a minter!
Hahahha. yep. watch it thou. that's my XB not XC hahahahah
@@PTPrecisionAutomotive 😁 my bad.
nice xb ford in the background. dont get them in nz anymore theyre all rusted out mostly.
too true good pick...
It’s a Subaru nothing but problems the CVT transmissions are garbage the interior parts are garbage I will never own another Subaru again!!!!
