Thanks for the video I'm working on a pair of Peavey SP-4G's with dual 15's and by golly I think you just gave me the answer as to why they suddenly began to sound sick as you so eloquently put it. I'm bushed ready for a nice stiff Vodka and water. I'll dive deep into the tear down and inspection tomorrow. This my friend was a very informative video... I just wish you had shown the repair / cleaning . Thanks anyway good job buddy.
I too have a pair of Peaveys with dual 15s. There is a video or two in my DJ Video Playlist. I did gig downtown today, had four SP5'S on the speaker tower and my dual 15's on the ground. When I was packing up the tower I ran only the these speakers and cranked them a bit and walked accross and then down the street, man I love them. I has so many comments and compliments on my sound quality today.
I work for peavey and have a pair of SP2 and they work great!!! But i did have to replace all drivers in my SP218'S burnt bad (not my doing) easy 15min fix..... Love Peavey!!! Using the gear over 20+ yrs
Really glad I took your advice and checked my cab. The speaker seemed to work fine but with the slightest of weird sound in it when I played. Had the same issue with the foam but not as bad as yours. Still took an age to clean out tho . Thanks so much
I've got a pair of Peavy 2000w RX Series poss mid 90s that sound like they are farting. Was going to bin them but I might take a look to see if it's the foam.
That HT-94 tweeter in there is pretty sweet. It's clone of the 2400 motor and can take JBL diaphragms. I have 8 that I use for extension and they sound as as the original 2404's I have. I scoop every one I can find on ebay.
Hi my next video is about peavey 115 i hope you like it and the one that i fix thay had the same problem with the speakers and tweeters others problems... I hope you like it thanks for posting God bless
i got some old peavey sp2 speakers given to me with black widows in there really old but they look identical to these they take some serious abuse upgraded some other peavey tops with them been running them for years for giggs with a xr800f mixer ... think i will use peavey all my life !
you cant kill black windows especially old ones the only thing you can do to them is by over excursion bottom out the voice coil and bent it If you dont clip and you have proper eq (cut everything below 40hz) you can feed them as much power as you like PLEASE REMOVE THE FOAM FROM THE OTHER SPEAKER AS WELL I have the same
@@Buhhhhhh-xi4ju well they can but you have to respect power limits at 40 Hz you have to be at -6dbs at 30hz at -9db so just do the safe thing and cut everything below 40 hz
If you modified the port by extending it slightly you could go to 30hz easier. They are a PA speaker and tuned higher which is why they bottom out or burn the coils if you play them too hard below their tuning frequency.
obviously you better take those foams out of the rest of the speakers...….that's a shame it happened......I just pulled apart an old MXR phase 90 that had foam in it.....and it deteriorated and was stuck to everything. I'll be removing the stuff every time I see it.....
Not blown common thing with peavey that is my coils on my peavey was black when I took me of mine out as it was rubbing I filed the tiny part down that had bubbled from heat and it works as fine as my other they must have had heavy use before I bought them but as I said my coils are black on mine and been in use high volume past year and still great
You can clean the air gap in the magnet and check the voice coil for overheating and thus shorting out.😊
Good tip!
Thank you for showing this. I have the same speakers and had the same problem and fixed them. Saved me some money!

The driver looks good!!!! And it's an original driver too...
Why is the foam manufactured as part of the speaker, if it can be removed without affecting sound quality?
Should be a mfg recall on these and peavy needs to step up and make it right to original buyers from new stk.

Love Peavey, but can't believe how little that driver and magnet is.
Sorry, I don't know how to clean the speaker coil. It's similar to yours but 18 inch

Try WD40. I got it to dissolve the rubbery paste. It was smeared/burnt on tight, but got it 100% clean again.

Hi, I'm from Argentina. I have about 18 inches of DS1803. I need to know what product you used to clean the coil. Thanks

@@GlennsSpeedShop he has the 18" driver from a DS1803 enclosure...
