Peavey Electronics Deserted

- Riding along the highway in Decatur, Mississippi, I was looking around, as I always do, and lo and behold, there’s an abandoned Peavey manufacturing plant. Closed down 8 years ago in 2010, apparently no buyer could be found for the building. So Peavey donated the $3M facility to the Newton County School system. Which I noticed was just next door when I left. Everything, for the most part, has been cleaned out. Most interesting to me was all of the training material left in the offices upstairs. Oh, & the bulletins in the break room from 2006, and there were two pay phones as well. No change in the slots...I checked. There was talk of the Meridian plant closing, but I am unsure whether it has or not. Next trip through there, I’ll seek it out.

About Lykins Films - I love documenting the rare & the abandoned. What’s the story there? Who were they? When was it? At what moment did the last person leave it abandoned. One day it’ll be gone & at least it’ll be documented in these videos & pictures. - Кино
So crazy how Peavey practically disappeared. They were on every stage from arena to dive bar through the 80’s-90’s
Such a shame.
Early gear was built like tanks by locals who took pride in their work.
From amps to PA gear.
Unstoppable and reliable.
Now it's just turned to shit.
When I was a kid, just about everyone's first good amp was a Peavey. No matter how old, how beat-up, how stained and ugly, Peavey equipment simply refused to die. But apparently that was a different time.
Sad stuff. some of the best bass rigs I have played were Peavey"s and I own 3 Peavey basses that are all outstanding.
omg. i worked at the front desk of a Residence inn in 1990. we had that EXACT same phone system. Exactly
I thought of Peavey wasn't good in the early 80s. Then they unleashed the Butcher and it was very cool sounding. It almost needed like an OD pedal. But my fave peavey was the VTM. Great amp and sounded great live or in the studio. Later the Peavey classic, and ultra plus series were cool.
What happen here... Peavey was the best guitar manufacturing in the world. Really.
Just bought a brand new classic 20 and I’m love it 😊
This brings a tear to my eyes. I grew up playing on Peavey amps. The Mississippi Marshall. Rest in peace Peavey. Even if they're carrying on in China.
Love my Peavey Classic 30 combo. Fantastic amp! Didn’t like Peavey guitar amps prior to owning the c30.
I sold their stuff back in the 90's , and it was rock solid. Everything was made to a higher standard back then. Those Classic series amps were outstanding, and tough as nails.
I was really hoping for a dial tone from the pay phone
I want a soldering standards book please
Mis-management . Hartleys’ son-in-law is a typical new-style management type . Out-sourced everything so as not to have to pay benefits & higher salaries to the rank and file ; while hoping that brand loyalty keeps the money flowing in .
It's not his son-in-law... It's his wife's son, his stepson Cortland Gray lol. That shitster is probably counting the days.
Hartleys SON IN LAW CAN GO SUCK DONKEY PICKLES!
Don't need any of those documents in English where they sent all the equipment.
lol... so my old Peavey Basic 60 Made in USA was an 'old school' classic :) good, ill keep it ;0
I've bought one new Peavey bass amp in 1980. The BIG one. Rotten amp. Never bought another Peavey amp since.
How did you get in there?
You know a plant closing is resentful and disillusioning when you go to the abandoned plant eight years later and find every award and commemorative piece still on the wall. They closed it down and not a single person looked at those awards and felt like they ended up meaning anything in the end.
Jack Coleman You’d think employees would take books and posters but they didn’t give a toss at the end of the day.
@@christuxford4462 Probably reminders of things they'd rather forget.
@@jackcoleman1784 probably dead on right about that,Hombre. Touche'....too damn good
Totally agree the disposable generation. I have about 20 factories surrounding the place i live all ghost towns. Once hired thousands of people and these people built their homes and raised children now the area is run down and drugs took hold. Many people moved away. Quite sad the entire area was built from these factories money. Now just a dilapidated shells sitting for everyone to see. America
@@21stcenturymetal31 Right, not exactly the same as pics of their kiddos, the houses and cars they purchased with Made In USA pride and wages. Little pink houses for you and me...
That is heartbreaking. I always loved the old Peavey stuff. Built like a tank.
I lived in Meridian in the late 80's, early 90's. I remember being on a tour boat in Israel in 1987, and they had a killer Peavey sound system on board. There was a sense of pride when I looked on the back of one of the speakers and it said, "Manufactured in Meridian, Miss." On the other side of the world...
Peavey has always had the best sounding, loudest and longest lasting, PAs ever.
No pawn shop is complete without an old, dusty Peavey guitar practice amp with blue and grey colored knobs. 😁
I used Peavey bass amps back in the 70's and 80's. Very well made gear, sad to see what happened to the company.
So much for Made-in-America...
Was a great company. Really was. My made in USA early 1990’s Peavey Bravo is a killer all tube 25W beast. It can definitely hold it’s own with my Friedman, Bogner and Marshalls. Good memories playing Peavey amps growing up ( especially the Peavey Bandit, killer solid state amp ). Sad looking at the abandoned warehouse. Many a great amp was made in that place. Peavey definitely has a place in rock history.
I had one of the Bravos..what a great amp..a might bit heavy (weight) but such great tone!
Heartbreaking!!! Peavey made solid reliable giggable stuff at great prices in the USA for so long.
Still have my Peavey 5150 from when I bought it back in 1999
I have a Peavey 6505 and Blues Classic both made in the USA. Great amps love them both.
Peavey really shit the bed with that under cover boss episode. Not to mention the aftermath that immediately followed
Wow you really have a way with words Stinky.
Peavey has been a music staple for decades. They experimented and , like most electronic & music companies, had several hits & misses. They have produced some iconic gear and their guitars and amps are often underrated and lack the resale value of other name brands like Fender & Marshall.
If you started or played in a band from the late 70’s through the late 90’s, chances are you had Peavey equipment along the way. I still have my original signature 5150 and our second guitar player uses a Delta Blues amp that is a tone monster.
Power amps, boards, tube amps, speaker, instruments, microphones, accessories. They really covered a ton of options priced for working musicians.
I have some CS-800 amps from '79 that still works. I use them on monitoring, and for that purpose they are just great. They can handle lots of "soft clipping" without going into "protect" as many other amps do. I had a couple of Crown CE-2000 and also LAB-1000 amps, and it was a constant nightmare with amps cutting out for several reasons. My FOH amps are mostly Crest 8001 / 9001, so no problem there. Lots of brutal power!
Damn we had two cs 800’s and two 1200’s when touring. Best amps ever
Ah yes. Don't see many peeps still using the Ole crest 001 series anymore. But I still do . Heavy but they always work for me
@@shanez5423 Yeah, they always gets the job done, loud and clear!
This is what happens when companies put profits ahead of their employees and consumers. They don’t want what’s best for us, they only want what’s best for them.
Businesses aren't set up to be charities.
Ben see my reply above...Peavey DID put jobs in the USA for decades, but couldnt compete after the laws were changed on them. Peavey couldnt hold back the environment of laws that came (so, it wasnt pure greed..although I see why you'd think that). It was the trade agreemens. See Ross Perot,NAFTA,Uruguay round of GATT.
I still have some older Peavey stuff. It still works like it is brand new. Sad to see them close down.
Crazy to see so much stuff still there. It looks like an abandoned Chernobyl facility.
There is a lot of talk here in these comments about Peavey being made over seas. I beg to differ. Yes some of their products were built over seas but not all of them. Their EVH 5150s and 6505 were made here in the USA. So were their signature guitars like the Wolfgang, Vandenberg, Omniac to name a few. Their steel guitar amps were an industry standard. The Classic amps were favored by a lot country artist. And Peaveys reputation for reliability was known all over the world. Their P.A. SYSTEMS set the standard. All in all Peavey put top quality products. They will be missed.
I remember my beautiful Stereo Chorus 212 and The Bandit 112.
I own a forty year old Peavy wedge ( monitor ) w/ a black widow. Two years ago we were moving from our apartment to the new house.. It was getting late in the day, the last load and we were very tired. I had forgotten the wedge was sitting on the ground on the passenger side of my truck. As we backed up ,my truck caught the upper corner of the wedge. Then dragged it up and under my truck. So this is the end of my wedge right!.!? Wrong.... I heard a loud pop, and then the rear of my dodge shot up into the air.. It was obvious that I had hit something very hard. As I tried to move the truck, it would just rev up the rpms but not move.. So I put it in park put on e brake, shut the truck off and got out. When I got to the back of the truck, I just could not believe what I was looking at!!! The fucking wedge got stuck between the frame and the rear wheel well. When this happened with no where else for it to go It shot the entire rear of my dodge straight up into the air. My truck weighs two tons empty.Thats 5000 pounds. And there was an additional six to seven hundred lbs loaded on to it. So 5,700 pounds is resting on top of this little speaker cabinet. And it somehow did it right at the wheel that pushed the truck when you gave it gas. We were stranded unable to move in the middle of my driveway. The wedge was acting like a floor jack. And that cabinet did not have a scratch on lt. With the widow the wedge weighs about 50 lbs. So it was 50 lbs against 5,700 lbs. And that fucking wedge won. We had too call a tow truck, to lift the rear end up and pull the wedge out. Peavey makes the baddest fucking cabinets in the entire world! Bulletproof. Badder than ol King Kong, Meaner than a junkyard dog! To this day I still have that monitor it still works great and I will never sell it. You can have it when you pry it from my cold dead hands! Thank you Peavey for making the baddest shit on Earth.
@Bob He added in the additional weight loaded on the truck.
@Bob Bob...ALL I pointed out was that he added the extra weight,I didn't say his math was correct. Are you dense or what? 4,000 lbs OR 5,000 lbs, either way, hella story. If true...
Peavy made decent equipment for the price. Many of us couldn’t afford the top of the line stuff and that’s where they fit in the market. Some of the earliest guitars made on CNC machine shop equipment intended for metal working was used to maximize production AND make a consistent product. Maybe the tone wasn’t great on many of their amps, particularly the entry level stuff, but they could stand being knocked around without falling apart. They did try to make some models with decent tone but that’s not what WE bought. As teenagers it was the basic, least expensive stuff that we could talk our parents into buying so that’s what they built. Most recording studios have a 5150 in their stable though, just one example of some good Peavy tone. Affordable equipment for the masses was the plan and it worked ok until most everybody that wanted one had one.
Can't believe they left that nice shovel behind
I woulda grabbed that
They had a better one that was made in China.
I bet all those awards are gone now, including the shovel.
I saw that shovel hanging on the wall too; I wonder what award that was?!
Wow! This really hit home for me, the logo on the sign triggered a flashback. My first brand new amp was a Peavey Basic 50 bass amp purchased in 1985. Looking back, I feel privileged to have been a teenager in the 80s. I later bought a Bandit 112 then a Supreme.
The sound track in this video makes it worth viewing.
This building could be the School district shop class. Plenty of room for Electronics and Auto shop
Pretty cool to see inside it. I live about fifteen minutes away from it. Thanks for sharing!
I bought an used Peavey Bandit 65, back in the 80’s. It was my first amp and I still have it. I never really thought about getting rid of it but after seeing this I will definitely hang on to now.
I used to own a Bass Combo 300. I'm telling you, that amp was a monster. Great sound.
i own a lot of peavey gear, off the top of my head: an early 80's decade amp with all of the peavey accessories, a 70's series 260 stereo booster, mid-80's series 260 pa system with speakers and stands, a 1982 tko-80 bass amp, two 80's century 100w extended-range heads, a 90's alpha bass preamp, a sessionbass bass head, a 70's bass cab with an 18" black widow, a classic series 120/120 tube power amp, a classic series 50/50 tube power amp, and a rockmaster guitar preamp, and 2 sets of mini-monitors that snap together for transport. all really great gear that always works and still works to this day. and all of it made in the usa.
Always was told to stay away from them. “Undercover boss” proved it.
I am no expert on all this but,in my opinion, "Undercover Boss" focused on the last 3 years of peavey...not the 30 years that came before.
I too, didnt like what I saw...but I think you have to look at the whole situation, not the last 3years. And yeah, even at that ,Hartley should do better than what I was seeing.
This is really sad. I still have my first amp, a Peavey Bandit 112 from 1990/91. I've played others but there's nothing like the tone on this one. A great company back in the day.
theres been a really strong following for the bandit and similar transtube amps lately. Lots of YT hype surrounding these amps. I have a Supreme 100W head and love it. play it through a mesa 2x12, great tones!!
Peavey nailed the transtube circuit. Most amps built with it are solid and great sounding amps.
I've got both a Peavey Delta Blues 210 and a Wiggy. I prefer the Wiggy as a pedal platform any day of the week, but the DB210 is a monster straight into the front.
Evan West I like my Peavey red stripe Bandit 112, was made in USA. Only had to buy a footswitch for it and was ready to go. I bought a couple T.G. Raxx guitar preamps in the 80s/90s. Sounds exactly like a JCM800 (but more low end) if I plug into into the power section of my Marshall. They nailed the tone 100%. Wish now I would’ve bought the bass version of that preamp (T.B. Raxx).
yarg nad You’re right, they really did nail it, plus the gain switch gives you 3 different options for different amp types on the Bandit 112.
Crazy seeing this I went to high school right next door at Newton County High in Decatur Mississippi! We took a tour there in that exact facility when I was a junior in 1996 and it was a great facility, state of the art at the time. Actually hung out with Chad Peavy a few times in the local town, Meridian just 20 miles down the road.
My first real bass was a Peavy. Sweet playing and sweet sounding. Loved the old Peavy stuff.
Greed ruined Peavey. Outsourcing to China was a big mistake. What happened to all the American workers that ran this abandoned facility? 🇺🇸🗽🦅🇺🇸
Every Guitar I play is PEAVEY ! My Vandenburg I picked up in 90 ! and two Active Nitro's both are from 90 and 91 !
Some day people will see these were the BEST GUITARS made form peavey..... I still use my AMR ( peavey) tube sweetener in my guitar rack to sweeten the ART SGX2000 preamp on the wet side .... Good gear lasts the test of time …. They peavey products I have …. Have Done Just That ! and yes All of it was made right here in the USA !!!!!!!
Thanks for this Video, my first Bass amp was a Peavey!. After this came an Ampeg in which I absolutely loved.🤩
Love my 80's Peavey Bandit 1x12 with spring reverb! I like to think that was where it was built 😁
80'S was Meridiam MS. 90's was Decateur MS. Peavey building
@@donrutter6765 ....damn... lol
i love the pay phone coin slot check
Was a longtime Marshal player. Then I recently switchedl to a 6505+, as the Peavey Valveking I was using as a backup head was more reliable. Honestly, I couldn't be happier!!
I fell in love with the Peavey sound and checked out Country music as well as 38.Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd equipment back in 1985 and purchased 2x Peavy Special 130 amps hooked up to my Boss CE-1 stereo chorus ensemble, the best combination I ever had and the Peavy's perfectly delivered dirt and stayed clean when played loud! US companies took pride in their quality made products back than. Now I'm old and thinking of Merle Haggard's meaningful song "are the good times really over"
Yes they are.
Amen, brother
How sad. That place is still full of vibes though. Reminds me of the Sound City documentary .
Growing up in middle Ga Peavey was the shit in the late 70's Skynyrd used them I had a Renown amp in the 80's but when I got a Marshall stack I never went back to the solid state stuff but the Peavey p a's and all there stuff was well built, didn't break down and powered a lot of Southern bands...legendary
Everytime I see Peavey's logo, or hear the name,
I always think of Allen Collins in a mega second!!!
☮️☀️🎸🎸👈🏽
Yessir. In the 70's I remember those velvet posters with the blue light print, it had Skynyrd playing Peavey.
Peavey CS-800s were in every PA rig back in the 80s and 90s. They weighed a ton but were unstoppable. I still have a Peavey 2x12 Classic all tube combo, 45 lbs of melt your ears loudness!
I believe peavey moved all of its manufacturing to China. I'll never buy peavey again . Fuck em
Great video....thanks man...had some Peavey stuff back in the 80s.....✌️
It's sad. A tragedy for America and American workers.

My first amp was a Peavey backstage plus...got it from Lynn's Guitars in Knoxville in the mid 80's
I have one of those on my bench for guitar testing. I can’t let it go as I’ve had i it for many years. To be honest when I used to ply through it I’d lay it on its face and put a pillow over the back opening in the cabinet. It sounded ok that way. It’s an old friend though and I like it.
I used Peavey bass amps/heads/cabs for years. Moved to Fender now but only because its lighter, easy to carry. My god, trying to hump about a 410 bass cab!
Yes indeed.
Wow, this is so sad, I really liked the equipment they made, was pretty good stuff back in the 80's and 90's. My first amp was a Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12
The finger swipe at the pay phone is funny and brings back memories. I haven’t seen a pay phone in years but if I did, I’d go for it without thinking.
He should've checked for a dial tone!
Missed opportunity!
How sad, but I did hear that Hartley donated the building to a school. Peavey made some FANTASTIC products. I am a Peavey fan for life. Their bass stuff is excellent.
I just bought a Peavey Valverb reverb and tremolo unit. There were/are very few companies that made/make rack-mount tube-powered reverb units and I'm very glad to now have one.
Timothy Lawrence I had one back when they were new. Wish I had kept it.
@@rocknrollmonkey8668 I'm adding it to my outboard gear for my home recording studio. I paid $450.00 for it in mint condition on reverb.com. There are always a few available if you ever decide to buy again.
Holy crap! They've really gone up since last I looked. Probably 5 years ago they were in the under $300 range. I paid $180 new in 1993 or 94 when I bought mine.
@@rocknrollmonkey8668 And $450.00 was on the least costly side of the five or so available when you factor in shipping and condition. In fact, one guy is asking $680.00!

Imagine finding a dude alone in the bathroom looking at the wall and just strumming a guitar .................... I’d leave ASAP
My first real amp was a Backstage 50,which I still have today,as a home backup. While the Backstage never really did it for me,nothing else I've owned has either. Played around with a Marshall JCM 900 MKIII for years and years. Tried larger Crates, and even a Peavey Butcher. After deciding the Marshall had to go,I started following amps on craigslist, researching them, reading forums and watching youtube stuff. In the last six months I've ended up with two 80's Peavey combo twins, which have both proven to be fantastic amps. Put a Boss SD-1 and a boss tuner in from of either and you're done. I was so happy with the first,I sought out the 2nd just to be sure it wasn't even better. They have slightly different tone pallets but I couldn't be happier with each individually. Once you get the tone you want, which came easier than any amp I've ever owned, and could be accomplished, even without the boss overdrive. It's just plug and play after that. Anything else I've owned had to have a ton of effects in front of to even get a mediocre result. Both these twins are straight jewels!!
Still got my Peavey Adrian Vandenberg circa 1988
That is one sweet machine!
Me,too!
I still have my Peavey Special 130, and it's a great amp. They made some very high quality products.
I still have my special 150 and special 130 run them together stereo

I’ve got a Studio Pro 50, Bandit 65, Special 130 and a Renown in the basement. All restored, which was easy because they’re built so well. The Renown is like having a Special 130 and a Bandit both built into the same amp. My favorite is the 130 because of the size and tone controls. They all have absolutely no “cache” with gear heads so they’re cheap, which is great when buying them but sucks when selling. They’ll always be worth whatever the speakers in them are worth, maybe a bit more.
I like it thanks for posting its realy sad to see this cool work place end up like this😢😢😢😢😢😢
It's because of NICKLEBACK
I played a peavey classic 2x12 for many years. Had built on phaser sounded great. Not many know this, but i had a ada mp1 in the rear compartment that was on all the time. Lol definitely kept my guitar buddies stupidified. Who knew a peavy classic would crank out some brown sound?
My brother in law had one, I was amazed by the Eddie tones. Pots got dirty so I cleaned them. Brand new again.
Peavey bandit and an AT-200. Good stuff
Someday the whole world will look like this 🙃
Cant wait till the earth can reclaim its self
Naw,it'll just look like Russia. Oh...wait,I guess that is basically what you meant?

They made some great equipment back in the days
RIGHT NOW. I have.
TWO Meridian Peavey Classic 30 Heads
and I rule TONE in 60 Watts in stereo.
Great amps.
Still got my Nitrobass head from 2000. I've only had to replace the fuse once within the last year. I'm never getting rid of it.
I own several peavey basses, a few international series a couple crafted in usa they're great quality. The market will probably never go up on them but if you shop you can get them for under 100 all day the last two basses I got were 50 and 75, but the $75 one came with Seymour Duncan's and a gig bag.
Peavey still does business in the US.
They recently rebuilt a Session 400 LTD for me in their Meridian, MS facility.
Nice folks to deal with, and they know their craft.
Running a manufacturing plant in this country has become treacherously expensive, so don’t go blaming them for outsourcing product.
yeah they're just not making them on the assembly line by Major volume they will still custom make..
but the problem is when you have companies like Black Star Line 6 and all these other ones under cutting them and what's the sense of having them made if they're not selling it's the same thing that Crate did too. crate used to be made outside of St Louis and now they're made in China....
yes you can definitely watch it 2015 episode of undercover Boss the Harley Peavey family and this business was featured on
Once a proud musical industry icon............ now just a sticker placed on junk from China. I keep their old USA gear working in my shop, and I'm proud to own those pieces.
I have 2 Peavey Mixers...A 16 Channel Mark 111 workhorse and a Peavey Mark IV 16 Channel Workhorse
Great mixers and well built too....
I also have a Peavey Bravo 25 Watt Tube amp that sounds great too...
With the music and all, it felt like a David Lynch production!
I can't believe nobody swiped that sweet, sweet Nickleback poster!
Nickel back came on at the end of names like Peavey & the stuff made today is NOT like the beastly tough equipment of yesteryear..the tones are COLD, lifeless & have NO character.
This is very sad. I had a long and prosperous career owning a sound company using a LOT of Peavey gear.
Just had a huge Peavey Dark Matter system that was/is incredible! I got out of the business and sold it, but it was a charm to use, and sounded amazing!
Whoa that is awesome. I wish I could go there
The advertisement was cool. And the plaques on the main wall with the shovel.
Peavey, was? a good company when it came to product support. They sent me all the info I needed to fix my amp. A schematic that could not be found on line. No complaints. But we are moving into a new age.
As I watched your film I wondered about that tech that helped me.
It’s a shame. I still have several American made guitars and Basses. I grew up with Peavey gear. I still have my T-40 bass I bought
When I was a kid.
Yep wish I still had mine
Old peavey is Dope The first real bass amp I played out of was a 1975 Peavey TNT 100...tried to get it from my great uncle 6 years later and apparently it is at this point a Fire hazard 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️🤷🏾♂️o well
This was sad to see. I love my Peavey amps! I’ve got my Bandit 112, and my JSX 120w. I don’t care to play on any other amp.
Go ahead America, keep on buying Chinese made products. You dumb fks are paying China to take over America!!
I plan on it. Trump has all his MAGA garbage made in China...
From Leo: Multiply this times 10,000 for all the factories that are closed in America due to the weight of excessive government regulation and poor trade policies that only benefit foreign countries. I have motorcycled 40 states avoiding the interstate system so I could see life in and around towns. State highways are riddled with closed factories. Words alone cannot express the sadness of all the towns that died when the local factory shut down. America has sold her children's birthright for one generation of cheap VCR"s and cheap clothing long since thrown away.
I agree. And btw: Who elected these people anyway?
Not to mention their synthesizers and filterbank. So sad to see this.... Thanks for the great video.
I always really liked Peavey's Mid 1990's 680-XRD 200 watt Powered Mixers, Great for small to Mid size rooms 50 to 300 people, I bought 4 of them in the 1990's, I still use them all the time , The only time i ever took them in to a shop was for a electronic bath to get the dust off of the components, I'm not a real fan of their instruments, However their Peavey Delta Blues guitar Amp with a 15 inch speaker sounds great.
My first electric guitar was a 1981 Peavey t15 made in the USA. I sold it like an idiot. About a year ago I managed to track one down off of eBay,and I ordered the same exact model that I had when I was young. It has a shorter scale but it's still so much fun to play. And it was built so well too. I absolutely love old Peavey gear. This video breaks my heart...
Amen, brother.
My 30year old 25 watt peavy Amp is still cranking
