6:35 my favorite is the pyromancer and the way the rules state and the way I play is that the fire mastery stays on the pyromancer. One goes away each turn and she needs those to power up her abilities. Albeit the rules were kind of hard to follow as they seemed all over the place.
I can say that the characters that are in the future are far more complicated and add a new level play, yet they do keep the balance of the game. Playtesting the Artificer, Gunslinger, and Tactician, they are so cool. Can't wait for the Ghost Pirate!
Thanks for the great review Tom!! Sometime, you should try a 2v2 game. It is one of our core game modes and adds many layers of strategies between you and your partner :)
This is such a great game. I've brought it to the table several times now with people that aren't boardgamers, and they just love it, at 1v1, 2v2 and even at free-for-all, it is a very engaging game!
Great review, I just wished Tom had mentioned that you can use the cards to change your roles or your opponents dice roles. Thus I dreading the odds, so less chance and more strategy.
awesome game :) played it with my nephew for the first time for both of us, and won. played it again last Thursday at board game meet up, and was involved in a four player free for all. that was pretty wild, I recommend this and can't wait to see the expansions
Played this at PAX unplugged. As soon as I played it I bought it. It's a lot of fun. Like mixing King of Tokyo and Magic The Gathering. Everyone I've played it with has loved it so far. Can't wait for expansions.
Amazing game. Just started a dice throne adventures campaign with 4 players and played for 6 hours last night. It’s definitely a game for people prefer accessible rules, short setup and yet a nice campaign dungeon crawl.
Why do I get the feeling Tom had absolutely no idea how this game was going to explode in popularity? When I looked in it I had a strong feeling about this one. I was not disappointed.
Absolutely LOVE this game! Some friends and I played in a 5-way free for all today. Ended with a draw --me and the other guy who was left knocked each other out mutually. It's good as a 1 on 1, but It's loads of fun when you get 3 or more in on it. This one is a must-play!
I want a "Borderlands" version of Dice Throne. That is a character rich Universe where the characters all have varying fighting styles already established. I think it is a cant miss combination.
DiceThrone If you take this game and keep it as simple as it seems and slap a sci-fi theme on it... I will completionist that game til the end of the world! 🤤🤤🤤
@@DiceThrone please don't do it with Borderlands. Randy Pitchford and his Gearbox Studios don't deserve any more more money with the shadey stuff they are pulling. There surely are IPs with more deserving studios.
I was really looking forward to your thoughts on this game. I have really enjoyed it. My kids love it and i can set them up in sets of 1v1. I have had a look at the expected characters in the expansion and they start to break the mould. Also the creators have been signed by a publisher so we can expect to see it in stores.
Looks intriguing but I guess the reservation I have is the tendency for the dice to “play for you”. Sure you can control how many times you roll, etc. but the cards seem like a separate game from the dice? Pay cards to play cards. Would love for the cost of some of those cards to require a certain symbol on a die or something thus bringing the two together and thus requiring even more strategy and decision making where the dice are concerned. Please tell me that’s part of the game because it seems a no brainer to marry the two?
Nice try but that would make the game so complicated it would kill the fun. Trust me, it's enough when you have a dice roll you can use for multiple attacks and you can re-roll twice, AND you get to spend CP on upgrades to attacks based on the cards you draw. It's already very strategic it doesn't need to get any more complicated. Esp if you are playing with more than two players and have a roll to determine who you are attacking.
Oh man, this sounds SUPER cool... can't wait to pick it up. My only gripe is that I prefer Co-op all things told and like a solitaire mode when plausible, and it seems like it would have been very easy to put one in... then again, maybe that's an imminent expansion...
The game really looks great, but I also agree with Tom about the cards having a background artwork, it will really giving a stunning look on it.. hopefully they will consider it in the near future.
Almost reminds me of video game RPGs like Final Fantasy, Mario RPG, and Chrono Trigger. What other games have that feel? I’m intrigued by the turn based combat in those kind of video games appearing in board games.
I like King of Tokyo, and wasn't expecting to like this one (or thought it would be ok, but wasn't sure why a new game was needed for that monster dice battle niche). But I really liked this game a lot. Great mechanics, attractive game. I would highly recommend it.
this seems another fighting dice game. King of Tokyo, Arena of the gods, Marvel dice masters, Star wars destiny dice. What makes this one better than Arena of the Gods or King of Tokyo?
The cards really lower the chance in the game, gives you better strategy at controlling your roles or your opponents dice roles. Also, the characters really are unique and very balanced.
In comparison: - King of Tokyo is too unbalanced and the cards you can buy with energy barely play a role (game is over, before they take effect). There are no charakters. Only plays well with 3 or 4 players. - Arena of the gods. I have not played it, but it seems it is more about positioning and a bit more complex then dice throne. - Dice throne: Very easy to teach. Very quick start. Very easy to play. Light dice chucker with cool individual charakters and a bit of charakter building. Plays well with 2 or 4 players.
Fair enough, but what about Arena of the Gods? As for King of NY (or Tokyo) There's enough expansions to make a nice balance deck (Which is what I do when I play with my students)
I've yet to play Ultimate Warriors, though it looked good if not somewhat kiddie. Although I hesitated buying before playing in case it felt too simplistic or similar to King of Tokyo.
How do you play this with more players? KoT has such great balance with its king of the hill playstyle. But I don't see what would motivate me to chose one player to attack over another or having players pick up on a single one making the game un fun.
I played this game at a Con and thought it was just kind of whatever. Basically like a slightly better version of Yahtzee. By the end of the 2nd game I was already waiting for it to end. The design for the Barbarian is also weird. Somehow the Barbarian is 1 of the primary healing characters?
OK, this seems nice but i have a question. Barbarian, Thief, Paladin etc. etc.....Elf ? What is this D&D 1st ed. where elf was a class and not a race ?
This is their game and their world. It is not branded DnD so it does not need to conform to DnD tropes. In the "DTU" (Dice Throne Universe) there are elves (or at least one Elf) that derives power from the moon. 'Nuff said!
I enjoy KoT, but in Dice Throne, the characters and cards have significantly more meaningful and there are layers of strategy to be discovered as you play it more and more. Also, our core ways to play are 1v1 and 2v2. In-fact, my personal favorite is 2v2 due to the added layers of team strategy and choices.
DiceThrone, thank you for the reply. I am interested in trying your game. It looks great and strategic enough to enjoy. The 2 vs 2 variant is what I find the most intriguing.
Yes. Well the experience of playing the game, not the actual rules ofcourse. But It's the same with food. Ugly food tastes the same as good looking food, but it ends up detracting from the experience. Not having art is OK for abstract games but here they are going for a fantasy theme. I like something interesting to look at when I play games.
"There is art on the boards". You mean, a giant face on the background? Those boards are pretty huge (each one holds 8 bridge-sized cards), they could have put artwork on every space and card of the same type. The only artwork is of the characters themselves, not even their attacks are pictured.
After playing this game several times now, I kind of hate it. WAY TOO MUCH LUCK. Some cards you draw do nothing while others are astronomically more powerful. And, if someone rolls a Yahtzee, may as well start a new game, because they're going to win.

Interesting, do you feel like through play-testing the second set the luck element is lessened vs overall strategy?
One of my greatest gaming memories. My first gencon was the last one and me and my buddy played this game with the developers!

A lot more strategy than you'd think. Knowing how your hero works and knowing how your opponent works can definitely get you an edge.

Way better with a better way to remove the chance.

Yep! Sure do. The cards are standard "Bridge" sized cards (not poker sized cards).
Which type? Euro or american?
