Thank you, Bernie, for having the sense to ask the question of what we can learn from other countries-a question that would seem foreign to too many Americans.
When I had my son it was a complicated birth. I had 2 midwives, 1 gynaecologist and 2 obstetricians (and 2 medical students!) the total bill £0.00. My son needed a medical circumcision, he had it done within 2 weeks, my husband needed a emergency colonoscopy, he was seen within the week, on a Saturday. Total bill £0.00. The NHS does have problems, but I wouldn't move to the US Way for anything. No political party in the UK would dare to abolish the NHS. They would NEVER be re-elected.
Helen E Not selfish! it's the relentless indoctrination and propaganda American has been subjected to, it's called 'marketing', the American dream, they have been sold and bought the lie.
+Helen E So you'd prefer a system that only benefits the middle class? That also seems selfish. Yeah rich people have a lot of money and it could do a lot of good for us, but they've earned that money. They worked hard for it, whether you want to believe it or not. I don't think it's fair to tax them more just because they are successful
kyleneeley1 The rich here is not paying more taxes than everyone else. However a system where the American president is paying less taxes than his own secretary, that is a broken system...
Although the Canadian health care system isn't perfect. I am very happy with the service. I am still recovering from a serious accident. I don't have to worry how much it will cost. I can concentrate on getting better. I have a nurse that comes to my home every other day to change my wound bandages. The nurse educates me on how to look after myself so the wounds with heal quicker with less complications. I actually feel very sorry when I hear of people losing their homes in the US because of health care costs.
Perhaps every member of Congress should spend a full year without health insurance and see what they pay out of pocket for basic health care services...assuming they can afford it.
What I would love to see to is the members of congress spending one month where they have to live one month on the income of someone who was born disabled and has to rely on SSI benefits. Mine for example $760 a month. Considering most of those jokers spend about have of that if not more on one meal a day in "business expenses", I wager a good share of them wouldn't survive a day, let alone a week. But yeah, then going without their cushy healthcare they get for being in congress would be something too.
It is amazing how much energy and dedication Bernie puts in his political public life, and his passion to keep on fighting for healthcare for all. And it can be done; the US can change that rotten healthcare system around and provide healthcare for all at a lower cost. And by ALL..it means everybody, every US citizen.greetings from the Netherlands, stay safe and healthy in 2022..best wishes!!
Yes I live in Canada and have access to a single-area access but if you Americans don't like that kind of system why don't you look into the German system. Originally, the Health system started around 1883 in Germany with something like Bismarck envisioned for the working class. And that developed in Germany into different Health Insurance Plans which everybody had to comply to but also everyone was insured. I know it is a lot more complicated than it looks but every person in Germany is insured but also covered by salary deductions for having pharma care (drug benefits), dentistry and vision care. Yes, the workers pay more for their monthly salary deductions in health care but all of them are insured. You Americans have to decide regarding a "single payer" system or a system like Germany where everyone is insured but has to pay for higher premiums.
Health care is a human right, period. To allow companies to profit from selling health care to the rich, and deny basic essential health care to poor people, is immoral.
I was born deaf and living with profound deafness (most severe form of deafness) since my childhood. If I wasn't born in france I wouldn't have heard anything, or I would have cheap low-quality hearings and couldn't change them. (ONE decent hearing aid is at least $8,000). But I was lucky enough to be born in a country with universal healthcare, I was able to have friends and communicate with much more people than I would if I spoke sign language. I also got a cochlear implant and will soon get another for my other ear. A cochlear implant costs at least $200,000, about a regular house in the US. Only the 1% population of the rich americans could afford basic comfort, and still, a total of 400,000 dollars, it's a lot. If I was born in the United States of America, I wouldn't have been able to hear well because I couldn't pay decent hearing aids and audiologist services. My life would have been a long dark silence, filled with weird auditory hallucinations or an unnacurate and noisy sound (from a hearing aid). Do you think that american deaf people deserves suffering? I don't think so...
No I am profoundly deaf which is close to complete deafness. Hearing aids were extremely useful but still not powerful enough for me and I had to move to the cochlear implant
So far, I’ve had a tonsillectomy, appendectomy, umbilical hernia, ruptured achilles and three broken bones. No cost. In addition I get Dupixent for severe eczema (monoclonal antibody injection) which actually costs £1480 for a month (2 injections). This, again, is cost free. Unlimited prescriptions cost £10.80 per month. Contraceptives, diabetic medication and vaccinations are all free. UK NHS. I have relative who is diabetic. I just picked up 6 months supply for him of 7 different medications. Zero cost. In the USA it would have cost me $4000.
My dear, dear American brothers and sisters, you MUST adopt a single-payer system like we have here in Canada. There's no other way than to make healthcare a RIGHT, not a privilege. Democrats, are you listening?
Bullshit! The population of Canada is around 38 million. The population of America is 320 million. Your shitty healthcare style system was tried here and failed. When my Canadian daughter-in-laws father needed heart by pass surgery he was told it would be two years. he came here and got it done in three weeks.
@@johnmcdonald9304 Point one: The size of the population has f*ck all to do with the cost of health system. The cost per patent is what counts. Pint two: Every one can find a horror story about just about any thing. The over all performance is what is important. Nice try, but not even a cigerette but buddy.
I love the fact that Obama has, at least, implemented an affordable health care system. But it pisses me off that he refuses to see what does and what does not work in other countries that have a universal health care system. His whole philosophy is like, "This is 'Merica! We don't need to see what other countries are doing right or wrong and plan accordingly."
I don't think that was the case. I bet if you could get a straight answer from Obama he would prefer a single payer system. It is too bad that they didn't even try to get one, but I don't think there was enough Democrats that would go along with it, let alone zero Republicans.
PhillipHunsberger Obama is not a dictator and needs a majority vote in congress and senate to get universal healthcare in place. He does not have the support... It's like Bernie Sanders said in another video, Obama cant do it alone, and neither can Sanders, so therefore Sanders asks for public widespread support to change the houses opinions and get support for his policies.
Actually everybody will pay less if you have Universal Health care because your government will make sure that the products that get to be in every hospital is the best and the cheaper. So pharmaceutical companies will have to lower their prices so they can get the contract with your country and that would make your health care cost less. So the bill will go down. All the developed countries have it for a reason. Because it works.
+Loufoca13 No it doesn't work. As the prices go down, so does quality. That's why thousands of people each year flock to the US because of the better quality and more advanced medicine that we have due to it not being socialized.
N Plutonium Wrong! Here in New Zealand we have had Universal Healthcare since 1938 and our health is listed in the top 10 countries internationally. We also have Pharmac, a government department that subsidises medications so prescriptions can cost less than $6.
Maybe they could take some advice from other countries or from people who actually work in these environments and not at a desk on providing and enforcing proper PPE to protect patients, communities and healthcare employees from unnecessary spread of infections acquired while in the healthcare setting. Prevention cost pennies compared to the cost of treating unnecessary illnesses. This would bring down unnecessary healthcare cost to all of the above including our own government. The facts... from someone who actually works in healthcare. But WHO knows, maybe they feel it's more beneficial for patients, community and employees to stay home and draw unemployment or disability than to protect them from unnecessary illness.
Bernie's at it again! That was a marvelous piece of rhetoric at the end of this committee. Due to the fact that Canada is close to the United States, its citizens are all aware of exactly how the US healthcare system works. Since everyone in Canada is using the Canadian healthcare system, and are somehow completely aware of how the US does it, they must think theirs is better! Thanks for the laughs, senator.
Sorry, I should have stated that this video is only a portion of the whole hearing, and my comment was referring to a part that was not in this video. In essence, he said that since Canada and the US are close, and since Canada has made no effort to move their healthcare to a "free-market" model like the US, that Canada's plan is better by default I just found it amusing to watch him ask loaded yes/no questions to actual experts just to prove his own points.
Yeah, I missed our point too. The United States is becoming a private oligarchy that serves a few off the backs of the masses. The United States is failing on several counts and this is a fact.
Zamajama Wrong. That portion was just to illustrate that Canadians generally much prefer their system to the US one. The fact that Canadians prefer their system is just ONE piece of evidence that a single payer system is better than a multi payer system. You'll be hard pressed to find any Western democracy with universal healthcare wishing their had the US system.
Avg American family gets 60k in supports a year by various channels. That's 12 times the minimum world wage. If people only spent their remaining non discretion dollars on food, health and medicine they be fine. But extras like liquour, cell phones. Netflix. Streaming, Cars and cloths seem to take up much of America extra spend.

Health care isn't free in Canada. I don't consider me being taxed to death as free. Plus our Previous Provincial government brought our a "Health Care Fee" which you pay every year with your taxes, but it's not called a tax, nor is it categorized as such, when they show your tax rate. But it's after tax money that you pay with fee with. So to pay the $450 yearly 'fee', we have to make $900. Isn't free just great. But of course that only applies to the people that work for a living and pay for everything anyway.

When you turn over 60 and the doctors and the statutory health insurance decides that you are not worth to keep you alive, they send you home without medical support.
