It's a great workout for sharpening your sense of pace, simulating pushing through the fatigue you'll feel during races, as well as practicing pace changes your competitors might throw at you during the race to try to break away in the middle or at the end of the race. It's certainly not "dumb af", and if everything turned into 5k pace, then the athletes failed at properly executing the workout. I don't think it's necessarily the guys' fault if they did indeed fail at it, though. This is a great workout, but it's very advanced and it requires very honed pacing which most high school and even most college guys don't possess.
This coach seems pretty knowledgeable. Always great to have someone who explains the purpose of the workout, and tries to inject different types of stimuli into their athletes.
Where is this at? Beautiful scenery.Wow, I've been out of high school 40+years and remember the fartlek workouts.Great Job Guys, keep up the good work & Thanks for sharing.
Tiorati Brook Road. They are ascending up to Lake Tiorati Circle, a significant series of step like climbs to the top. Ending at Seven Lakes Drive. This state park is roughly 30 miles north of Manhattan, New York. Google any of those names you will find it.
Without delineated distance markers, how can you tell what pace you are actually running? I don't intend that question as a criticism. I just honestly don't know.
This workout can be confusing for runners who only run XC. I can remember there was alot of girls who didnt know what a 400 pace was bc they didnt run track or some girls never understood the 800 pace because it wasn't an event they ran so figuring it out was hard. Over all it is a really fun and great workout.
Johnny Guerrero fartlek training can be used for helping with your mile training, but the intensity of each run would be higher, and the recoverys would be longer
It gets to a point where doing it too much the pace doesn't change, personally it would've been better doing the ladder twice at the right pace than doing it 4 times with slowing down too much...still good workout well done
Samuel Zepeda ... yes I agree... I'm currently doing cross country running as well, I've realised how tough long distance running is not only physically but mentally...
justinian The Great thanks dawg, i worked hard, and yea the 2 courses i did it on were pretty flat, i mean it is a highschool xc course so they try to be pretty effecient to runners. but yea it was fun
En vez de eso último que hicieron, mejor sería hacer series de abdominales. Son delgados por ser muy jóvenes pero les hace falta fortalecer el abdomen.
@@chiefhardy6312 oh it’s alright man I just go to the school now and I have to try and fill their shoes the same coach is there and everyday he reminds me and the other varsity squad that we need to be back where they were
Ahahahahah this fartlek makes me laugh. Try to do this: 9x (1 min fast, 1 min slow). Just to determine how fast is the 1 min fast: we usually do 400 metres in that min. I tried the one in the video and it was so easy.
Andrea Volponi if you can do 9x 400m in 1 min with 1 min rest your 1500m pace should be around 3:40ish. Possible, but not very probable you internet troll
TheOWLCITYADDICT my best on 400m is 49 sec. 1 min is a joke for me. Keeping it 9 times's pretty difficult and sometimes I can't keep 1 min in the last 2,3
You replying with your best 400m time means you have no fkin clue how aerobic and anaerobic systems work. Your 400m time has 0 influence on how fast you can complete this training. The absurdity is not the 1 min 400m pace that part is pretty easy, the absurdity is a fkin 1min break in between every one of them. If you can't run 3:40 you are or cheating with your break time or not making the 1 min on the 400m simple as that.
lennert cornette Are you from the East Coast? Unless you have a trail in decent condition, running through the forest sucks and you will probably get a tick in the summer.
edgar espinoza its a lot harder to run elite times in distance with extra bodyweight. they do do crunches and push-ups but they have slow twitch muscles unlike sprinters. this means they dont have unnecessary muscle mass but are still strong for their bodyweight
i got good abs, good chest, good triceps and biceps, all i do to look riped as a long distance runner is 100 pullups, and 100 pushups everyday , it actually works which is awesome , i also do 100 situps and other ab workout, its actually good to do them during a workout
Wouldn't matter if they put in heavy deads or bench. They'd still look like this. As you climb up into more competitive times you body diverts protein away from building and bulking up non essential muscle groups. These guys train slow twitch muscles which aren't as bulky. They also run all the time which is a full body exercise. Full body exercises produce more contoured muscles not bulk. That's why gymnasts can out lift many competitive body builders but still don't look bulky. It's because they do so much full body work/stabilization. Plus it's not really an aesthetic competition. The goal is getting lower times. That's it.

I agree completely with that man! Most people also don't realize that running looks alot slower on camera than if you are their in person.
Samuel Adams I hated fartleks
You Have To Learn Somehow👌
I like how the coach changes the workout to keep them ready for anything.
cicirunner that makes so much sense
This coach seems pretty knowledgeable. Always great to have someone who explains the purpose of the workout, and tries to inject different types of stimuli into their athletes.
Wish I had somewhere this beautiful to run :(
Great workout. Probably best done with someone experienced up front.
Chronox5 David Rosas in the front is experienced he ran a low 9 minute 2 mile
Nice 400 pace
Keep in mind the end of the video was in 2016
These videos are so motivational
"There's a big disparity in talent"
these boys were going !
2:54 I wish my coach would call me kid.
7:21-7:41 sounds about white
You guys should run on trails, hard surfaces can lead to higher risk of receiving shin splints.
greatest intro ever
cancer at the end tho
I like this coach

When the whip was cool
I don't understand the pacing...so the greater the distance the faster the pace? that can't be..can it?
Without delineated distance markers, how can you tell what pace you are actually running? I don't intend that question as a criticism. I just honestly don't know.
Common Sense They have smart watches that tell them their current pace
its so nice there
i'm noob runner what is 90 sec @ 5k pace?
whatever speed you typically run a 5k @ run that fast for 90 seconds.
Thanks for the info.
Quisiera entrenar con ustedes
j'aime bien le don bosco sur le tee-shirt ! beau clin d'œil à ce prêtre qui a fait beaucoup pour les enfants ! sinon ça donne vraiment envie de courir
Superr
So just ladder intervals. What makes this a "fartlek"...
didoma73 they’re jogging the whole time, if it was an interval they’d have breaks in between to stop

where is son bosco
Jimmy Jam private high school in NJ
The kid in the white hat at the front is not running the corect pace and he is supposed to be leeding the team. What happaned to Don Bosco?! !
Some very fit young men! I reckon this bodybuilding scene is a joke! This is the real deal
As a runner myself and almost every other runner, needs to have a fit body not to strong or weak.
Samuel Zepeda ... yes I agree... I'm currently doing cross country running as well, I've realised how tough long distance running is not only physically but mentally...
justinian The Great 5k PR 16:52

The gayest dancing I’ve ever seen
it says 800k pace, which is a sprint pretty much and they are barely doing a 10k pace.
Workout like this in pavement is going to destroy ur knees
nah
I go to bosco and the cross country kids are easily the weirdest. Peep the end of the video for proof
Lol, this workout seems a hit pointless

You guys have gigantic space to run in forest/nature, why would you run on the street...

why cant there be at least one runner who is not super skinny , they should do push ups and ab workouts also
edgar espinoza its a lot harder to run elite times in distance with extra bodyweight. they do do crunches and push-ups but they have slow twitch muscles unlike sprinters. this means they dont have unnecessary muscle mass but are still strong for their bodyweight
