Honestly... I think most western pre 60s (actually pre new hollyood and leone) are a bit.... Dated. It's often very cheesy, a bit unimaginative in the execution.... Like I dunno, I personally found a film like Rio Bravo to be unmemorable, with very bland characters, a very basic cinematography and editing. There's also this very.... theatre feel to it, from the staging, the acting, the overly clean costumes....
I also think most films depicting native americans can be.... yeesh.
I feel directors like Leone and Sam Peckinpah managed to bring a new life to the genre, from their settings, their characters, their scenes, their themes....
Now obviously, spagetti western became gimmicky and generally just trying to immitate leone (and even the scores were clearly aiming to reproduce the Morricone style), but you still had some surprises like The Great Silence.
And 90s to today style of western, while it has this tendency to go for an overly gritty and realistic tone unless it's a pastiche (in which case it's generally comedic), you still got some breathtaking stuff, like the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford which really is a perfect blend between a complex portrayal of historical figures à la Lawrence of Arabia and a more contemplative film like the thin red line. It's also filled to the brim with emotional scenes that really made it a film that left an impact on me.
I'd say if I had to chose ONE western, it would probably be Once Upon a Time in the West. It's once again a very melancholic and beautiful film that also got it's side of darkness with a kinda weirdly police mystery plot behind it which always fascinated me when I was a kid.
Truly a masterpiece of cinema, even to this day

Saw when I was a kid with my dad. Since my dad isn’t around anymore to do it I showed it to my sisters and little brother.
Just like with Ben Hur, The Matrix & Interstellar, they loved it even though they’re still young.

@@filipankenbrand2040 but he didn't make the Godfather, so it doesn't matter, and it's a good thing because if Sergio made Godfather it would be too sphagetti/cheesy. Sergio Leone made some good western films, but he didn't influence cinema like Kubrick did.

You Can See Its Inspirations In Almost All Films Released Even Today, Including Tarantino Movies, Mission Impossible Franchise, John Wick Films And Soo Many Many More... That Is One Of The Reasons For This To Be Among All Time Greats🙏

reminiscing of my time playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and how we wouldn't have that if it weren't for great classics like this.
A few years ago, they found the Sad Hill cemetary in Almeria in Spain, it was overgrown, they wanted to rescue it, so they offered that if you donated $20 you could have your name on one of the Graves,
So my son's name is now on one of the graves.
That's definitely what I called a good story, thank you for sharing it!
The Sad Hill Cemetery is in Burgos (Spain), not in Almería.

@@johnp.smithasimpleman7281: From first-hand experience I'll say it is. For 4 decades, in her car trunk, my mother carried around a discarded tombstone she picked up in an abandoned graveyard. She wanted it because the kid who died had my first name. I drove her car from San Diego to Omaha and discovered that tombstone still in the trunk. Though I was tempted I didn't dump it en route. I think the people at her last residence got rid of it after she died. She had "planted" it in their garden.

This movie will never be erased from my memory! This is one of the best movies ever made, if not the best !
I can't praise this film too much. I'd cut a couple of scenes but still a Masterpiece of the highest order. Just think: the critics hated all 3 in the early 60s. Morricone, Leone and Eastwood will be forever young!

I stopped counting how many times I watched this movie. I started as a teen and I am sure that those 3 characters became my male role models, since my dad was not around. The film is deeply ingrained in me. I am 54 now and still watch it now and then.

Is there a single scene in this film that isn't memorable? The correct answer is NO! And the music score...my god the music is transcendent ! I was so captivated by the music score I bought the soundtrack record - it was the first record I ever bought as a kid. Absolute perfection. I still watch this movie once a year and it never gets old.

I first saw this with my brother when I was 10. We were so blown away that we rewatched it immediately to see if we missed any details or compare our favorite shots.
I still haven't managed to watch more than 5 minutes of this movie and I know Clint Eastwood is one of the Most Iconic Characters in all of Cinema and his Movies are some of the best of all Time and That soundtrack on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly there or more rather here is one of the Most Legendary Soundtracks of all time
