I really liked your demonstration of bouyancy/getting back into the boat. I capsized a similar size boat once, a Coronado 15, and it took me long time and much effort to get back in. It had so much freeboard (relatively) that I could not lift myself enough to get in. It looked like you had no difficulty getting back in
Climbing back into a boat, even one with a small freeboard, is remarkably difficult. The best solution is to pre-attach a rope with loops into which you can place a foot (or two, depending on the height. Legs are better at hoisting out of the water than arms.
@@Inkling777 Yes, I actually was considering making a rope ladder that could be deployed when needed. But then the wife went out and bought a J/80 (I was in China at the time). Never sailed the C15 again; J/80 became my favorite out of all the boats that I had
This seems very well thought out and carried to a fine finish. Will you offer a center board as option? In the northeast we have many close ledges and shoals and a pivoting board seems necessary for any shallow water exploration. Regardless job well done folks she’s a beauty a Bonnie and most likely a joy to behold!
Good question! A centerboard would take up a bunch of room in the cockpit floor, which is why we used a daggerboard in this boat so we could keep the cockpit open. However, our 17' Jersey Skiff that uses the same hull does have a centerboard -- based on the traditional Jersey Skiff of the 1800s that was a working boat for marine salvage and did a lot of beaching, the centerboard makes a ton of sense there! ghboats.com/our-boats/17-jersey-skiff/
In the last few seconds of the video you can see a surprising wake and turbulence aft from the transom on the port side dragging a bit underwater while heeled.
@@bobpiff5161 Any part of the transom that drags underwater and causes turbulence is a bad thing-especially in a small boat. It causes drag and slows down the boat. Ideally the transom's lowest edge should never drag underwater at all in a sailboat or rowboat. Powerboats that need to plane and are an entirely different thing. Some of the wake behind this boat such as at the 4 minute mark, look in a miniature way like a planing boat which means drag.
@@paulbriggs3072 Great explanation Sir. I’ve owned 9 sailboats (up to 21’), and I believe all of them have had some portion (albeit small) of the transom under water at some point or another. Except the very high transom wineglass looking transoms, I think there are very few boats that would get the entire transom out of the water, but I’ve only been sailing for about 15 years. My previous 57 years have been in power boats. Very interesting observation!
7:27) Does that "low spot" just forward of the transom; I'm guessing there's a self- bailing valve in there to drain out the water while underway; Right?
I've been looking for a Peep Hen on the used market, since it is out of production. Have you thought about producing something similar? At 14 feet with a full sleep and sit-up cabin, it would complement your Scamp quite well.
A lot of folks like to tandem row who either have no intention of overnighting, or want to camp ashore. But there IS enough room for two people to sleep aboard if you make a sleeping platform with the seats. You're welcome to come visit us in Gig Harbor to see our boats in person, but all of our boats are fiberglass and not available in DIY versions.

Do you have any plans to build a larger 25' whitehall?
We don't, the biggest boats we make are 17' and that's already quite a bit of work for our little shop to handle!
