  • Stovies
    1 large onion
    1kg potatoes
    1 beef stock cube
    1 can corned beef
    salt and pepper
    olive or sunflower oil
    Serves 4 can halve recipe or store leftovers in fridge for up to 2 days.

    There are more variations on stovies than towns in Scotland. But this is as good as any - very close to mine. I prefer sausage meat (but there's always a tin of corned beef in the cupboard just in case) and I like a leek in with the onion.
    Can't abide YT cooks who insist that only their version is right, and needs 2 dozen ingredients from the supermarket they're clearly being paid by.

      Some people do think their way is the only way, but it's rarely the case. Having English parents I found this recipe years ago in a old cookbook and wrote it down. I don't make it often but when I make it I always think I should make it more regularly 😊

      My Gran (made the best stovies ever, even if they were never the same twice) used to say "Ride a day on horseback and you'll aye find a different way of doing things!"
      I think I've tried most variations - and liked most.
      If I was to be hanged, my last meal would be stovies.

    This is proper stovies no sausage or mince, corned beef or boiling beef only and if you use boiling beef you singe or fry it brown first and then boil until tender and add the rest if doing with corned beef then this way here is best
