My husband grew up in passenger coach that was modified for living. His dad worked for Southern Pacific who provided the cars for employees and familes. When the work moved, Southern Pacific moved the cars to the new locations.
I have known 2 different men who have lived in converted railroad cars. One was a crew member of the bridges and buildings crew for the Union Pacific and he lived in a full sized rail car with a kitchen, bathroom and multiple bedrooms. The other lived in a converted caboose. He was an electrical contractor and would post photos of himself on his attached deck, eating dinner while herds of elk wandered through his yard. Both of them enjoyed their living arrangements. The caboose was far smaller but it was decorated inside much nicer. I would say that I would prefer the caboose, as I live in an efficient small apartment that has been built inside my huge barn/shop.
When I was a child, we lived in an outfit car for a year when my dad was a Signal Foreman. My father later was a General Chairman in the union. He was very good friends with George Jones. George and his wife came to my dad’s funeral a few years ago and told us about this place. He must have been sad to sell it, but it looks like it’s in great hands!
Any concept that breaks up the monotony will always be a breath of fresh air. As you can tell that said person/s is living and expressing themselves from self.......no one else. The whole point of having an imagination (of your own) is to make the best of what you like and have to make a life for ***you ......and yours. I'm sure that if most weren't so bent on being like and living like they see others do, anything (especially if safe and comfortable) would be an interest to explore.
This is bringing back so many memories! In the mid 70s, I lived in Durham, North Carolina, and worked in a steakhouse that was three cars of a train in the parking lot of the shopping center. It was a busy place, despite its small size. The food was really good, but I think the fact that it was in a train was the biggest draw. It's where I opened my first bottle of champagne, without any instruction at all, and saw the cork ricochet three or four times from side to side without hitting a soul. That night, there was entertainment to go with dinner. 😊
That looks like a super fun stop off for a Family traveling in the mountains. Also for adults who may be in love with trains and want to experience that on the trip. Beautiful scenery, maybe some fly fishing in that river? Whatever it is it looks like a good place for a stopover
The Best One Is The One with The Kids Bunks with fence trimming The Kitchen Is Very Nice And The Bedroom with the high ceiling THIS ONE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF DOUBLE THUMBS UP
This is the most fantastic thing I’ve ever seen. Never knew it existed. I am a train freak and this just exceeded any expectations I could have. Thank you so very much for saving these beautiful pieces of history. Your conversations are excellent. You have preserved the original history while adding todays comforts. I have to find a way to come out there and stay and try out more then one of the cars. Bless you all and wishing you all the best to keep it alive and have more train people find you.🙏🤩😱♥️
My oh my. I would love to stay there. My father worked for Southern Pacific as a conductor brakeman. I spent some time in those railway cabooses, and traveling to visit. My uncle was a railroad employee and my brothet in law. Love this!
'Could You Live in a Train Carriage'? Yes, my parents did so for four years in a train carriage less than half that size. With two small children and without luxury.
Oh my. This is wonderful. My favourite is the Western themed car too. Our children are all grown, but I can envisage my other half and I sleeping in the "kids" room. 🚃🚞🚋
I lived on a train. The Ringing Brothers train for years. I love it it was amazing knowing I was a small prosentage of people in the world that lived on a train. The story's omg
I was blessed to live in Panguitch, Utah. Going to Richfield, I will always pass and see the trains. So, many memories and lots of pictures. So happy for you guys.
We had a restaurant in bogalusa that was inside of a train car, connected to a old steam engine. That restaurant had quite a few tables and a kitchen. And they made some really good food too. They made 1lb burgers and 1 lb chilli burgers that were lunch and dinner in one. You could easily live in a train car. There is plenty of room.
What a good idea of recycling I really love this idea good job and thank you so much for sharing Happy Holidays Continue To Stay Safe Healthy Strong and Happy Many Blessings and Much Love-n-Peace Y'all 💜☮️💯😇🙏🏾❣️
When I took two of my grandkids with me to New York we went to Lancaster Pennsylvania and I rented a caboose motel for us to stay in and it was so neat. It had two queen beds and a bunk bed. It also had a kitchen table , fridge and microwave. Bathroom with shower, it was neat.
I just read all the messages from one person regarding the book, "The Boxcar Children" and I have to tell you that book has been a favorite of mine my whole life. I too wanted to live in a boxcar, but those children were orphans when they found the boxcar. I am 77 years old and grew up in coal country and there were trains that ran right behind our home and I loved it. I went to first grade in a little one-roomed schoolhouse in our little town and that is when I first learned of the book. Our teacher would read it to us, chapter by chapter each day. After my sister and brother were all grown with families of their own, I ordered the original book to give to them at Christmas to read to their children. Of course, I still have my own.
I absolutely love it ❤️ great concept Not your " normal" air b&b that's what's so cool ...great getaway for young kids ... small river/ creek ... I did miss something ...I'll start over again ...where is this (state) ? Thanks again ... I'm going to look into this ... thanks 🙏
I stayed in half a boxcar hotel in Indiana w my 2 dogs (45 and 100 pounds)We liked the freight line right there and LOVED the original station and minisplit air ventilation thing. Not cheap, but very effective and quiet. Would have liked a full tub, that's it.
It's not a train. It's a single car. The largest passenger car ever built? Based on what - it's a typical coach of the streamliner era. The fluted side panels mark this as a car built by Budd. Pullman-Standard cars tended to be smooth sided. Why is it called the California Zephyr, just out of curiosity - the car is not a former CB&Q car. The missing "connector" is a "coupler". The electrical panel is a breaker box - it does not have fuses. It's a shame the passenger car is sitting on salvaged caboose trucks instead of its original passenger ones. Excellent interior renovation though. This train car at 5:50 is a caboose, as are most all the cars on the property. How long has it been on the property? The only railyard fire that comes to mind is the Roseville disaster of 1973 when a carload of ordnance bound for Vietnam caught fire and exploded, setting off a chain reaction that destroyed a large portion of the yard and damaged nearby homes. Though painted in UP colors, UP didn't operate bay window cars like that. I suspect it's a former Southern Pacific car. To manually set the brakes, you turn the brakewheel clockwise until it's as tight as you can get it. The latching pawl in the housing behind it will keep it from releasing. To release the brakes, lift up on the release lever. This disengages the latching pawl and the brakewheel can then be freely spun counterclockwise until it stops, releasing the tension on the brake mechanism. The term "bay window" is correct for the "pop-outs" on the sides - they are called bay window cabooses. Conventional cabooses have a cupola extending above the roof. Number 7 is a 50 foot boxcar. Can't tell if it's possibly an American Car & Foundry product or Pullman-Standard - would have to see the ends. The caboose used for an office is former Burlington Northern extended vision caboose #12575. They are similar to conventional cabooses except the cupola is wider than the sides of the car to afford greater visibility.
You are a well of knowledge! Thank you. Robert Misspoke about the passenger car, it is just the largest car we have on our property, and the California Zephyr name is just for fun. The caboose involved in the train yard fire was a fire in Provo, UT train yard. Most of the names of the train cars are not necessarily associated with the railroad it came from, they are just for fun. 😊
Wow! This is so amazing. What a unique idea. You’re doing a great job and all who get to stay there are so fortunate. Hope we see another video when you’re finished.
I would love to bring my kids and stay in the Burlington Northern caboose. My grandfather worked for B.N. As a switchman and I would live to see a lillte pice of this daily life.
Wow. Never knew anything like this existed before. BTW, a "train" is a locomotive and cars. What you have here are "cars". Yes it is a nitpick but a lot of us railroaders cringe when we hear of a train and it is actually just one car.
That's awesome in India it can be useful to make new home in village or less urban areas since we are upgrading our trains, the old coachs can easily reused.😇
Lived in a side by side pair of UK Great Eastern six wheelers set up as a small two bedroom bungalow. Coaches dated from about 1900 and had their original numbers.
Really sweet idea! Unique, historical, and the surrounding scenery looks so peaceful. 😍 Wondering what the night sky looks like since it seems so remote. Kudos for the creativity!
Oh…this is so cool, sweet, cute, charming, & special!! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful piece of true American History & Art!! Oh, I’m in love!! Where might this be, please?
Rent is getting expensive buying houses is getting expensive and is better buying or foreclosure house and slowly but slowly you fix it up and you can call it your own because things are so expensive today you people did a good job doing this and I would do the same thing I would love to live in a place like this rather than living a three-story house awesome job
The long carriage turned into home is more spacious...I might shortened the couch area to make an extra bedroom as guestroom. Overall, the train home is much better than the container home, I guess... that's also depends on how long is your carriage you can afford to buy.
this is the first train graveyard ive ever seen. now they need to figure out what to do with those city buses that they keep upgrading. with all the homeless people all over im sure they wouldnt mind living in a train or a bus.
