or of course, Abridged-Kai: "FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-- [Adobe Premiere has run into an unexpecte--] *[SHATTERS THE ERROR MESSAGE WITH MORE SCREAMING]* --UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU..."
Drummond, no question. He makes sure that Vegeta's mouth is open for a reason, and that anger is _palpable._ The echo effect only adds to it. The director of the dub and Drummond knew how to make the scene impactful--the lines are worse and easily goofy, but the sheer power behind them means you FEEL the emotion here, and that means everything. Sabat... doesn't sound any angrier than Vegeta usually does here, and his words are long done and switch to stock DBZ grunting while Vegeta's mouth is still wide open for screaming.
@@jaymarshall5425I meant that unlike the Ocean dub, in the Kai dub (not the original funimation dub), it's usually not as loud but it is a little noticeable, especially when it's either from a far distance or they scream loud enough (just like this scene) and it doesn't sound nearly as artificial either. And they use it a lot more than you think, even when you can't really hear it (unless you wear really good headphones and you pay close attention to it).
Brian Drummond is awesome at playing evil Vegeta in the Saiyan and Namek Sagas. Vegeta has extremely menacing and psychotic characteristics during this period and Brian absolutely nails this. Later on though such as during the Buu saga I find because of Vegetas character development Brian’s version of Vegeta seems out of place. Chris Sabat is the better version of Vegeta from the Trunks saga onwards when Vegeta has largely dropped the menacing and psychotic traits.
What's funny is, when they transitioned to Sabot, I thought it was supposed to be Vegeta maturing.... Then they went back and dubbed over all of Drummonds work. Its a little offensive to Vegetas character.
Said it in another comment: this opinion is driven by the fact that's how it played out in the American broadcasts. It's not "coincidental" that this shift happened at that moment; that's exactly the reason _why_ people keep saying it's perfect. If Drummond shifted to Sabat at literally any other point in the series, people would be saying "that was the perfect time for the change." Watching the Ocean dub, which tackled the rest of the series, and I just don't agree at all. Drummond kills it from start to finish. If anything, he actually _gets better_ as the series goes on. Yes, his take on an evil Vegeta is perfect- and his Majin Vegeta has to be heard to be believed- but I never got the perception that he can't do "mature, subtle Vegeta" any worse than the fantastic Ryō Horikawa in the Japanese version. It's more that we never heard Drummond do it during his time in DBZ on Kids WB/Cartoon Network, so we don't associate that sort of speaking style with him. Speaking of which, I think this mindset is similar to those who don't like the OG Japanese version because they grew up with the Toonami Funimation dub as well: it came first, so it's the best to them. Like, if you're not used to it, it sounds off at first, but when you acclimate to it, you realize what we've been missing. And I can say this because I had that exact same opinion, considering I grew up on FUNi Ball Z. I still like Faulconer's music, but outside of nostalgia, I just can't find myself going back to it compared to Kikuchi, whose music I initially resisted until I started getting into it. Or how I grew up on Kung Fu Space Jesus/Japanese Superman and resisted Goku's "real" personality until eventually I came to adore it much more. Drummond!Vegeta might sound off in the Cell and Buu arcs (minus Majin Vegeta, because again, just listen to it and you'll be angry we in America didn't get to hear it), but it's absolutely not out of place to my ears now.
@@mratlas3364 It’s almost like the casting change happened because the dub was originally supposed to END with Drummond as the character…and Sabat taking over was something that happened later… It’s almost like the voice thing has nothing to do with his character at all, especially since his actual voice actor has remained voicing him for the past 35 years.
For me, Drummond was definitely better suited for the evil Vegeta of the earlier seasons but Sabot was more suited for Vegeta's transition to angry loner/anti-hero, beginning at the midpoint of the Namek saga, which is ironically the exact time when they made the switch from Ocean voice actors to Funimation during its original airing in the U.S.
What's funny is, when they transitioned to Sabot, I thought it was supposed to be Vegeta maturing.... Then they went back and dubbed over all of Drummonds work.
I grew up with the Ocean dub so it's an easy Drummond Vegeta for me. The echo just adds to the intensity and the pure, unyielding rage that Vegeta should be experiencing at this point in the story. Also the Ocean version of Galick Gun vs Kamehameha is epic
Can you imagine when Chris had to do this and he remembered Brian’s version . He must’ve been like this day has finally come for me to do this scene ah crap
Drummond, hands down. His voice syncs with the frames better and I LOVE the frighteningly delivered, vague threat of "I'll get you for this" over Sabat's "when I find you, I'll kill you" it sounds so lame side by side.
I feel like had Chris Sabat just had the exact same linee word for word, it would have peaked. But yeah, i gotta give it to Brian Drummond in this one, really gets Vegeta's insane murderous rage across.
Man I got to say, Christopher's line delivery is good and all but GODDAMN.......!.......Brian's voice echoing with the reverb just sells the psychotic rage that Vegeta was feeling at the time. I mean you can feel the anger in Brian's voice and the background music fits the scene perfect, whereas Christopher's voice is angry but it doesn't having that booming presence and it doesn't help the music is basically almost silent besides the sound effects. Plus this kinda reminds me of the og transformers cartoon from the 80's with the amount of over the top anger dbz had and how campy it was, and I absolutely love it lol.
I like Sabat's Vegeta but I much prefer Brian's version, always have, always will. Probably because I grew up mostly watching the Ocean dub other than between the Ginyu saga and most of the way through the Trunks saga (and the Fusion saga the first 2 or 3 times that aired here), although I have seen all of both dubs. Ocean Kai needs to get released so we can have a proper, somewhat more modern comparison.
They gave Brian some sweet echo that helped a ton. I overall prefer Ocean because I just think Vegeta and Piccolo sound too similar in their tones and inflections.
there's no beating brian drummond on the way his voice acting fits vegeta overall. this was at a time when vegeta was vengeful and it does kinda work for his voice to mellow out a bit like it did with sabat later in the series once he calmed down a lot more. drummonds voice fits the early days of vegeta when he was always so full of rage. this is porbably why brian drummond was brought back in to voice vegeta's cloned slime version in super.
Drummond: "I'll get you for this!!!! You won't escape, MY WRATH!!!!!!!!!!" Sabat: "When I find you, I'll kill you! You're dead! I swear it, you are dead!" Abridged: *SUPER FBOMB*
Something most people won't realise, but there's delay/echo on Brian Drummond's version of the scene which I think adds to the intensity. Yes, Brian would still win the round, but it also has better sound design. Notice how dry Chris's take sounds in comparison.
Bro why does Chris’ vegeta sound like he’s reading off a script (Before anybody says “That’s how voice actors get their lines”, yes but they’re not supposed to SOUND like they’re reading their lines…)
I loved the Kaioken x3 vs Galik Gun beam struggle scene. I prefer it in the Ocean Studio dub as Brian Drummond's voice of Vegeta plus the studio's background music was so awesome. Also Vegeta's iconic line..."YOU WONT ESCAPE MMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYY WWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"
While I much prefer Chris, Brian definitely gets the W here. Not only does he sound incredibly angry, but the echo just sells his murderous wrath. With Chris, Vegeta just sounds upset or annoyed.
tough call, the first seemed recorded in an domed arena, while the latter from a bathroom, the ambience had something to do with it but I can't be cheated on that. Both good I'd say.
Brian Drummond takes this one. He just sounds angrier. I know they have to dial back the volume and force to avoid too much strain on the voices of the actors, but neither sounds as angry as they should be purely based on limitations. However, I feel like DBZ Abridged had the best take on this scene.
I really thought Gohan was gonna be killed or worse. Drummond scared the hell out of me as a kid, and when he went against Reccoome, it felt like turning mortal and impending doom against the Ginyus. It. Was. Awesome
