@MichaelDemimonde I respectfully disagree: As for Van Basten: he tried 2 years to get back to the game but he couldn't make it. At the time nobody thought he was finished, otherwise he wouldn't go under surgeries on his damaged ankle to recover. As for Gullit: The reason he played only 1 game is because he was substituted in half time against Scotland and he walked off the camp. Both the coach and Koeman tried to make him change his mind and play in the W.Cup, but they couldn't succeed.
If the offense started outside the penalty area, but continued into the penalty area, then, according to Law 12, "If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick." It's almost impossible to tell whether the holding ended outside the area.
Even as a Scot I have to acknowledge a shockingly poor piece of refereeing with the Koeman foul.. I have to say though my favourite bit of the video is at the guy in the crowd with the amazing taché! Check it out at 5:01.
In '95 came new stars like Overmars, Kluivert, vd Sar, Seedorf, Davids. Imagine v Basten, Rijkaard, Koeman and Gullit where born 2 years later and the Ajax talents one year earlier, this dreamteam could have won the World cup in '94. vd Sar; Wouters, Koeman, Rijkaard, F.deBoer; Seedorf, Gullit, Davids, Overmars: v Basten, Bergkamp,
Van Basten was injured in 1994, although he did not play any game since the CL final 1993, he stil was a player in 1994. Gullit left the Dutch squad during the preparartion in may1994, he didn’t support Advocaat his strategy when they were about to travel to the USA. So in fact Van Basten and Gullit cluld still have played there, if not Marco his ankle refused and Gullit just went aling with the squad.
First time I've seen this since I was 13 and watching live. I remember the Koeman farrago of course, but that high tackle later on is even worse. Nowadays that would be a straight red and a lengthy ban, by far the bigger injustice.
@MichaelDemimonde : Gullit was not on the bench at Sampdoria: According to his coach Erikson " he was playing the best football of his life in his 5 years in Italy" He played so good that season that Milan got him back for the next season, and he was recalled to the national team; although his disagreement with the national coach, along with Van Basten's injury hurt Holland's chance of winning the W. Cup. Also, Van Basten was not retired yet; he was still trying to comeback. He retired in 1995.
yes, I agree, you are right, but he was called for the World Cup in the USA, but unfortunately he resigned .. the reason was to prepare for the game for AC Milan back
Yes England for sure. Rijkaards goal disallowed, wouters denied a penalty because its was inside. And yes koeman should have a red card but it wasn't a penalty.... England team was shit that days, they didn't deserve to be at the workdcup
@14mooler They got Gullit back for...8 games. He was soon off talking about sexy football in England. He got two more caps for Holland. Van Basten didn't play many more than that this season either, and never again after the european cup final. The point is, that's where those three were by this match: finished, whatever Eriksson might have to say about it..
@petrusaloisius I'm English and you know what - you are right! This Holland team had more right to be at the finals than Graham Taylor's useless crew. But I'm a bit biased, I always loved the Dutch teams, since the 70s. I was even sorry to see Bertie's side lose the final. But entopic is right on the last man thing ;-)
@entopic Objectively, you are right on the last man thing. The directive for red cards on this came at the same time the offside rule was changed to include players level with the last man as onside: at the start of the 1992-93 season. So by the directive, the ref should have sent Ronald K off and given a free kick. Objectively :-)
@14mooler Right...the point being that Advocaat didn't miss him and didn't need him. The Dutch should have beaten an average Brazil (aside from their forward pair) anyway, there might have been room for a 27-year-old temperamental Gullit in that team, but I don't think Advocaat cared. The Dutch looked good and were putting together the team that was the best in 1998. I seem to remember 'career-threatening injury' being the phrase attached to van Basten for the whole of 1993.
To be successful at international level England should develop more skilful players and not rely on long balls all the time... fortunately we have emerging young talent like Sancho..Rashford.. Barkley..Maddock..Bamford..and others.
lol, that's one hell of a rant. England were probably good enough to beat the Dutch that night but they definitely let what happened go to their heads. But as I said, the red card was a red card, yes, but that doesn't make RK a cheat. That makes the ref a cheat. You're only a cheat, if you 'CHEAT' the referee. Technically the ref saw it, he decided that this was the correct decision, he was wrong, he was a cheat by cheating the English. But Koeman wasn't a cheat, the ref was.
@MichaelDemimonde Also, Bryan Glanville of "World Soccer" magazine, wrote after the 94 W.C that "with Gullit, Holland could have defeated Brazil ". That is hardly the definition of a finished player. Why would a club like Milan (at the time, arguably the best team in the world) get back a "finished" player for next season, specially at a time that only 3 foreign players could play in each game? However, I agree that after getting back to Milan, he was never the player who shined in Sampdoria.
I never understood why those English wankers were calling Koeman a cheat. He made a red card offence and Assenmacher only gave him yellow + a free kick (relying on his linesman). So what´s the deal here?!
Two red cards out of the gate here. Limeys got robbed and I am no fan. I sometimes wonder if they were screwed outta USA 94 because the hosts didn't want them there.
@superlex611 This is 1993, van Basten and van Breukelen had retired, Gullit was over 30 and on the bench at Sampdoria. Just enjoy Carlton Palmer's Cryuff turn.
If this game was played nowadays both Koemans would have been sent off. Would that be a first that 2 brothers get a red card in the same game playing for their nation?
Echt waar ? Leuker dan Oranje op het WK in 2014 ? Of leuker dan Ajax in de CL in 2018/19 ? ;)
@@martijn_yt Ja. Echt waar.

The referee was German as well. He was banned from refing iny more internationals after this one.
Germans hate the Dutch. They would have got no favours there. Spunky's positioning cost both hoals.

The World Cup deserved to see Tony Dorigo
Didn't he set up David Platt's goal in the 1990 3rd place playoff?

It was outside the penalty area. What are you complaining?

You can tell who the referee wanted to win
Probably England, as he disallowed a Frank Rijkaard goal not shown in this clip for offside, where it wasn't offside at all.

the argument is koeman, and his brother, should have seen red. holland had the better team but england were cheated out of it.

where is gullit and van basten and van breukelen ? what happen to them ?
