- From staying at amazing camp sites to climbing up to 4600m altitude this gruelling trek was worth it and was rated one of the best in the world by National Geographic. Our around the world trip adventure continues in the beautiful country of Peru. We met so many amazing nice people and were lucky to have an educational and thrilling 75km trek to Machu Picchu. Ancient Andean culture is very cool, did you know that the Inca had no formal number system?
The best part of the hike was the varying landscape, every day we had something new, from high alpine breathlessness to the jungle and finally to the rivers below. Seeing Machu Picchu for the first time is an awe inspiring moment and makes you really pause. It had a similar effect to seeing the treasury in Petra for the first time.
The hike was gruelling at times mainly because of the multiple days of downhill trekking. Going downhill hurts the knees so make sure you rent poles!
0:48 Day 1: Humantay Glacier - 4km distance, 300m ascent, 300m descent
1:54 Day 2: Hike up to Salkantay pass and down to Chaullay - 22km distance, 850m ascent, 1900m descent.
6:57 Day 3: Through the Jungle to the Jungle Domes - 12km-18km distance depending on if bridge is out from flooding, minimal ascending and descending
9:14 Day 4: Hiking with views of Machu Picchu across the mountain range to Aguas Calientes - 22km distance, 850m ascent, 1000m descent.
12:26 Day 5: Machu Picchu! Either by Bus or by hiking (650m ascent, 650 descent)

Lovely Perú! 🇵🇪
Your video was my fav so far of this trek 😂 the pringles was hilarious
incredible video dude im sold on salkantay! was going to book 4d3n inca trail but it's booked - this looks equally as good or better!
Awesome to hear. Hope you enjoy it!!
Great video! Congrats, we plan to travel this Dec with the same company, hope it will be great! If you have to choose the best moment/view, will it be at Humantay, Salkantay or Machu Picchu mountain?
Hiking up the salkantay pass is amazing. Make sure to leave early for best chances to see the beautiful mountain before the clouds come in. Humantay was nice and refreshing. Machu Picchu is breathtaking. I recommend spending a good amount of energy to connect with the land and the people that live there through the whole trek. It is very rewarding!
Pringles got me through that high altitude nausea!
That’s awesome!
love it!
Hi guys, you made a very interesting video on the Salkantay trek. I like it. However, I wonder if you understood the music playing in the first minute, or maybe you just liked the sound and put it into the video. Also, you had perfect weather for four days but unfortunately, the day of Machu Picchu was misty, right? Anyways, I hope you enjoyed it. yes! and that Llama was so funny, they are just wandering around in Machu Picchu.
Hey thanks for the comment! That song was playing in the car when we were driving and I used Shazam to find it. What do the lyrics say? And yes the day of Machu Picchu was misty but still beautiful.
@@groovymashedpotatoes1361 "Maria the most beautiful girl, the girl from the neighborhood, how beautiful my neighbor is when she goes to study" So he is basically singing to Maria the schoolgirl.
Haha thanks, good to know what’s playing in all these songs from around the world!
Nice video!
K really enjoyed watching this. I find you yo be really funny.
Thanks!! Glad you liked the mild humour haha.
Is it better to bring your own trekking gear to Peru or buy it from the secondhand stores in places like Cusco?
This is a good question. You can rent the required items from the trekking companies. This one gave us our sleeping bags but also would have given coats. Gear is really all about comfort and the Inca used to do this trail in wool layers! If you plan to do lots of trekking or cold weather or rain activity in your life and want to invest I would highly recommend buying the following. First is your hiking boots. Try lots on and find one that fits you well make sure it’s waterproof. Second is a gore text or similar shell jacket it’s like your second skin and works in all seasons. Third would be a wool base layer, thing long pants and a long sleeved shirt. And fourth would be a down or synthetic puff jacket for underneath, this is great for camp wear and brings your kit to ~0-3 deg Celsius. Don’t forget a headlamp!
how does this not have more views?
Came for the trek video, left at 30 seconds when you ate at McDonalds.
Pre trek ritual 🤣
Sometimes in a foreign country it's so satisfying to eat familiar food. Even when you like the food where you are nothing says HOME like a quarter pounder with cheese. And seeing those arches.
Eating quey (sp) just doesnt satisfy
What month ?
Hey Eric we were there December! That was the rainy season but we had no rain. We wrote an article on it www.groovymashedpotatoes.com/what-to-expect-on-the-5-day-salkantay-trek-to-machu-picchu-with-a-tour/
@@groovymashedpotatoes1361 Good to know, I plan on going there this November - December to trek as much as I can!
@@roti1873 You're going to love it!
Hello guys! Did you go with a tour or you hired a guide in Cusco? How much did the guide coat you? Ta
Hey I am going this November how much did you pay and did you pay ahead of time or when you got to cusco? Any info would help I am taking the hop bus for 3 days up to cusco then spending one day in cusco before the trek do you think that's enough for the altitude? One night before will be in arequipa which is also higher altitude. Thanks for any info!
We are going this November too! I’m looking to use the group called Salkantay Trekking. What have you found?
@@NeilSeaver I am looking at the same company...They are saying its $450 us per person..I'm trying to see if it's cheaper to wait till cusco to sign up with this company or if I have to pay ahead to secure a spot...Ive heard of people paying $200 or less so I dont want to pay that much if I dont have to. But I dont want to get screwed either so just looking for opinions of people who have done it and how they did it. This guy used salkantaytrekking.com too i can tell by his guides clothing that's why I'm hoping he responds :)
@@NeilSeaver when are you guys going exactly? Wouldnt that be something if it was the same time! :D
MyLifeAdventures there’s a group called donomades.com that does the tour and I did see it for under 200 on their site. I stlll need to work out what the difference is between The two tour companies. We’d be doing the hike thanksgiving week.
@@NeilSeaver yes I seen one Machupicchu Reservations that's pretty cheap but I don't think they go to the sky dome and I think the one for 180 USD was the 4 day where you skip the pass I think and I wouldn't want to skip anything so here I am still wondering XD. Doesn't seem to have clear answers online on whether to wait or book ahead... I'll be starting the trek Either the 20th or 21st of November...
where do u go for bathroom? and toilets
Great question! When you’re on the trail hiking you have to use the “Inca toilet” meaning find a spot outside. So bring toilet paper with you. During some parts of the hike it was possible to pay one Sol as you pass houses to use their toilet. Bring a few 1 Sol coins with you! All the camps had nice bathrooms with toilets!
Great video! But… really? You ate in a McDonald’s ???
At that point we had been away from home for 5 months so we were very excited to have a familiar treat :)
😄Did you actually go to Cusco and eat McDonalds.
At this point in our trip around the world it was exactly what we needed! 😂
Any special training you would recommend before doing the trek?
The most important thing is probably the altitude so staying 2-3 nights in Cusco is recommended. There are long days of descending so make sure to get poles for your knees! Your guide should help you with your speed and take care of you. Try taking the train and save yourself the gruelling last bit before Aguas Calientes :) as for exercises the best thing to do is lots of stretching maybe 25 minutes a day after your hiking days and in the morning as well. This will go along way to help prevent injury. Hold stretches for 1-2 minutes! Let us know how it goes!
