I lived there for two years. It sucks. If you like always being wet, and people saying "That's hilarious" instead of actually laughing, then it's your Emerald City
"You can stay home and watch what they've got or you can come here and watch what you want". That is my philosophy and why I'm so dead set against committing only to streaming. For one thing an internet feed can break down from time to time or the movie will buffer during the most inconvenient times. They also decide what you watch. My brother doesn't like that I have over 1100 Blu-Rays in my apartment and tried to sell me on Netflix but I told him that I can't watch anything on Netflix without the video buffering then the audio is out of sync with the video. I also like the way my collection looks. I like the spines facing outward and knowing that if I want to watch something it's right there. My nurse who comes to change my bandages on my legs tried to warn me of hard media being on the way out. Maybe it'll happen with Warner, Fox, Paramount, et al but it'll never happen with Arrow, Scream Factory, Kino, Vinegar Syndrome, Blue Underground, Synapse, 88 Films and all the indie companies
Wow! That’s fantastic that you do that! But why no pay? I don’t understand? I had Movie Memories poster shop in Palo Alto California for 25 years and I had to pay everyone that worked for me.
I'm a seattle native, scarecrow used to be a tiny place before they got the bigger store. The owner had a photographic memory and would always have great recommendations. He loved Alfred Hitchcock, so as like a 9 of 10 year old those were the movies I was watching. Scarecrow is like a not to barely hidden gem of Seattle. I hope they open up to business like it was before the pandemic. It's an experience just to look at all of the crazy movies on the shelves. I wonder if Quentin Tarantino has ever been there. He would love it.
Right by my work. I love the convenience of popping in and getting pretty much any movie I want, but more importantly is the fun of exploring the caverns of movies and never knowing what you might discover.
As a graduate of the Art Institute of Seattle, with a degree in Music and Video Production/Business, Scarecrow is "second home" to me! Been a customer since 2000. Yes, in my opinion, Blockbuster and Hollywood Video (and yes, even Video Update) WERE impressive, BUT, all three "pale in comparison" to Scarecrow! TO THIS DAY, I'm FLOORED by their selection/inventory! In my opinion, for those that STILL have a VCR (OR a DVD and VCR combo), one thing that DOES give Scarecrow an "edge" is that fact that they STILL have titles on VHS. As a fan of "rare/obscure/out-of-print or "deleted" titles, THIS works in my favor!
Good video stores were therapeutic. Nothing else mattered during the short time of browsing through and deciding what to rent. I do not miss the register line-ups though...haha
I went here all the time in the 90's when I was going to U of W. Now I live in Olympia, so I'm only able to stop by every blue moon. I miss the laserdisc section and being able to rent something all the time. Now you've made me want to check it out again. Thanks for making the video! Sam.
Is Scarecrow Video still there? Man I hope so. I miss the video rental stores. Just another piece of life we will never get back... So Scarecrow gives me hope it can survive in small pockets around the country and world.
I worked at three mom and pop video stores when I was younger. I absolutely love the vibe of these places. I see this was put up about nine years ago. Do you know if they are still in business as I know the competition is even greater now? Either way thanks for this video. This guy really loves movies and shows!
I could only imagine what it's like living in a city where they still have video stores, I bet even to this day people are still taking their kids there everyday after school
I spoke with this guy once! I was able to even mention a title they didn’t have. He was totally awesome and helpful. I finally found that flick, it was a rip on RUclips. But I found so many more movies I wanted to see they had here I only wish they were local.
I liked the shot of their list of 'most messed up horror films' on their shelves (1.A Serbian Film, 2.Martyrs, 3.À l'intérieur... can't argue with that!) and the ratings for them - 'My Life is Ruined!', 'Is This Even Legal?' etc.
The thing is Redbox and all these other internet movies is not the same as going to a video store. Redbox is extremely limited and looking for movies on the internet is wide but you would really need to look at certain types. Video stores provide upfront movies where you can be introduced to many movies you've never knew about. The future is going to sh#t with thess damn new age humans depending so much on the net
I think this documentary would of greatly benifited having use a much wider lens and maybe less following of the person speaking, but regardless an enjoyable watch!
I’m so jealous. It’s always been my dream to work in a video store. I’m a regular at a movie/music store in my city. Been going there for about 5 or 6 years. But for some reason they just won’t give me a job. I’ve applied so many times 😭 hopefully they give me a chance soon 🙏🏽 ps, you and Quentin Tarantino would make great friends 👍🏽
From beta to vhs to blue ray to dvd video stores were a special place to al of us even blockbuster as a grown up I miss taki the kids there , it something we did as a family. Now its gone. Thanks a lot corporate a holes.
I came in to say this, then discovered this was by Mr. Dave Chen himself. So I apologize in advance, but: if you took out the bullshit DSLR World of Wonder bookends and stuck to the good stuff, the guy walking around talking about what they offer and his observations about the state of video, this would be twice as good.
I've been a DVD "Collector" since around 2004-05, since I'm out of N.J., and work(ed) in Gotham, I had a silly plethora of Video shoppes to hunt at. Since 2006, with the demise of the incredible Tower Records, I've witnessed vid shoppes steadily yet surely closing up shop. Virgin Megastores, and lastly J&R Music World of all places. My main DVD hooks were the Mom and Pops, Brick and Mortar stores were I've found the rarest Disc stock, I'm talking scarce and worth silly coins! Last time I tried to rubber the road looking for the good stuff in my last trip to the City, all, and I do mean ALL those little Video stores were shuttered, ......... this time for good. To me it's quite telling just how much permanent damage the computer has done. Yet you have collectors complaining that their means to locate the physical movie goods ain't there anymore, yet they still entertain the computer for they DVD fix. Don't make any sense at all folks!
i miss video stores...i miss carring a backpack to rent 6 or 8 VHS tapes... i miss finding weird independent jewel films that no body rented
ME TOO
The absolute best video store ever. Hours of my life spent going through titles and just having conversations with everyone there. Wonderful place.
And I need to go check this store out, my teacher highly recommended me that. :D
I kind of want to move to Seattle now....
I lived there for two years. It sucks. If you like always being wet, and people saying "That's hilarious" instead of actually laughing, then it's your Emerald City
i wish i had a store like this.
Reading the reviews I see this place is still in business and that's great to see that a small business is thriving❤

Hold up. Leg bandages...
Run a Plex server and get the best of both worlds. Although it would take a long time to rip 1100 blu-rays.
I went there in 2002. Lived in the Seattle outskirts in the late 90’s. This place is a dream come true for film lovers.
I volunteer here at Scarecrow, and it is truly amazing the titles you can find here that you thought had disappeared forever, and ever, and ever.
Wow! That’s fantastic that you do that! But why no pay? I don’t understand? I had Movie Memories poster shop in Palo Alto California for 25 years and I had to pay everyone that worked for me.
@DisneyFan-eg3oz It's like a community library. And they probably get free rentals to help clean and organize the place.
awesome....we need more physical rental locations. esp with this much thought

I am still looking for ass blasters from the Amazon and dirty grannies part 9
I worked as a manager for a video store chain for 23 years, this place is like WOW! Unbelievable! Very cool store.
Wow! I could spend a whole week in there. The only problem is Seattle is 3,000 miles too far.
Wish they had a video store like this in South Wales 🏴 🇬🇧
I'd LOVE to go to this store! I'd be in there from open to close just browsing.

Art Institute of Seattle? Oof.
I would spend so much time here, it's crazy awesome.
It's the video store motherland!
Good video stores were therapeutic. Nothing else mattered during the short time of browsing through and deciding what to rent. I do not miss the register line-ups though...haha

The way they have the genres organized so meticulously is amazing and really helpful. I would spend hours in there building the ultimate watch list!!
I would love to go there seems like my kind of video store, independent and literally EVERYTHING!
I thought it was a lovely short Dave. Very good work!
I wish I still lived in Seattle just for this video store!
A section for breakdance movies!?? I’m sold
the way he puts the tapes and dvd’s back on the shelf the method of a true master
Always wanted to visit. 😎✌️
I prefer DVDs, Blu-ray‘s, and VHS tapes over Netflix and streaming any day of the week!
UHGGG I wish I had a place like this locally.
I'd love to have go there
What an awesome store! Love that Dharma-inspired Scarecrow patch too.
The sheer amount of movies. You could just spend ages watching everything, and just as many hours exploring.
I miss that feeling.
Is Scarecrow Video still there? Man I hope so. I miss the video rental stores. Just another piece of life we will never get back... So Scarecrow gives me hope it can survive in small pockets around the country and world.
Yes!
Gosh, another reason I want to move to Seattle, wish they still had stores like this here in Chicago.
BRING BACK VIDEO STORES AND VHS!!!
FUCK DIGITAL!!
Now this is how to do a video. Information on inventory and other useful information. Thanks.
I almost cried. If I could only move to Seattle....
Thee best video store around! Full on 100% support!

I wish there were stores like this on the east coast.
I want to be buried here. LOL
I would be at this store everyday if I lived close to it. I imagine itd be hell if a video gets misplaced
I could only imagine what it's like living in a city where they still have video stores, I bet even to this day people are still taking their kids there everyday after school

Scary to think if the internet ever goes down permanently most people will lose access to all this content forever.
Just moved out to Washington a little more than a year ago from Chicago-land area. This store seems like a cool place for me to visit. 👍✌😎
- I bet it smells like a video store too.
I'm freaking out watching this ... My dream job would be to work in this shop
I just love how casual he is when talking about all the different tiles in the porn section.
Shared it so more People can see this great store
Such a cool video store..
I liked the shot of their list of 'most messed up horror films' on their shelves (1.A Serbian Film, 2.Martyrs, 3.À l'intérieur... can't argue with that!) and the ratings for them - 'My Life is Ruined!', 'Is This Even Legal?' etc.
When is the first video store you remember. The first one i remember was like February 1984 in Long Island NY
Freaking awesome place!!! Love it!!
Just amazing.
is the store still open to this day?
Puppet Master 1 through 100 haha
that had me cracking for long time hahs
Are you still open . I sincerely hope you are as there would be thousands of movies in your store that youll never ever get on any streaming services❤
I will make pilgrimage to this hollow ground one day.
Your video quality looks like a very very good VHS quality transfered in 720p
Awesome i like vhs tapes too :-)
I f---ing wish there was a Local video rental store like this in West Michigan!
Amazing!!
I really enjoyed this video.
Man would I love to work there someday lol :P
Are you selling Anything that's left?
I was lucky to rent some movies like Brazil and Blade Runner back in 2003 from Scarecrow
So cool

This guy really knows his coffee.
What program did you edit on, Dave?

I wish I could visit this movie store, but I live all the way in Ohio.

@SharrelWright blockbuster was more expensive than independent stores , red box killed both then Netflix
