I have some footage of Sonny Liston ( wearing the thunderbird t-shirt) on a old Ringside Medicine Ball Training VHS, having a ball launched at his stomach not sure if it was when he was training ahead of his bout with Floyd Patterson? George Foreman was his protege back in the day, would have loved to have seen Liston matched up with Frazier or Shavers in their primes would've been a banger for sure!
My old trainer named Charles sawyer was a stablemate of Sonny Liston back in the late 50's (I think). Everyday after training we would talk for at least 2 hours. I heard every Sonny Liston story imaginable. This brings back great memories.
In the footage here, his jab looks crap - he's flaring his elbow and punching with his arm, not his shoulders/hips. But he was clearly a formidable fighter all the same.

In his prime, when you consider his size, punching power and boxing skills, Sonny was just about the perfect heavyweight. Most people focus on his knock outs, but he was a beautiful boxer, as well. This is a nice video tribute.

I met Liston when i was a kid about a year before the 1st Ali fight. Man when you saw Sonnys fists you knew this guy was a wrecking machine. He had the biggest hands i've ever seen. And I was watching him spar, and I felt the power he was hitting those poor sparring partners with.

One of the most underrated heavyweights ever... its shame how he was treated considering how good of a boxer he really was. I wonder what would've happened if sonny liston fought ali when sonny liston was 10 or 15 years younger.
Sonny would've had more speed and stronger chin... The real problem with Sonny wasn't his age when it came to Ali, it was his approach. Sonny should've cut the ring off from Ali but by that time Ali was a relatively new kind of heavyweight.
He was more inspiring than Ali, Liston after all that hardship became the champion of the world, he was in a sense, another Joe Louis, but you couldn't even call him that because he had the potential to be more inspiring than that, but Sonny had also dealt with his own demons. Unfortunately the Civil Rights Movement doubted a person like Liston and his past would've been a better option. Which ultimately gives us the unsatisfying ending of his life.

You can tell by looking he was older than they thought. I always wondered why he looked so much older till i found out he may have been born in 1920. Makes it so much more impressive

I continue to be amazed by the courage that a young, slender Ali (still "Clay") showed in being not only willing, but eager to climb into the ring with him. Interviews show the lad knew exactly how menacing Sonny was.

He was more inspiring than Ali, Liston after all that hardship became the champion of the world, he was in a sense, another Joe Louis, but you couldn't even call him that because he had the potential to be more inspiring than that, but Sonny had also dealt with his own demons. Unfortunately the Civil Rights Movement doubted a person like Liston and his past would've been a better option. Which ultimately gives us the unsatisfying ending of his life.

What people don't know is Sonny was undefeated & an excellent boxer before he ran into Muhammad Ali! The facts are, Ali was simply better & definitely got into Sonny's head! But make no mistake about it, Sonny was a great boxer. Salute. And thank you for this treat. 🇵🇷
He wasn't undefeated. He had a decision loss on his record against marty Marshall which was avenged later prior to the fight with ali.
Ali was not better. Sonny took a dive in both fights. It's obvious to the trained eye.
