    A true boss rush and possibly an addition to let us play the hunt board monsters again in ultimaniac difficulty would be so sick.

    Scoring modes in action games are often busted anyways. I can't think of a single scoring system in an action/ARPG/character action game that can't be exploited to hell and back with a little mechanical knowhow.
    Hell, Vanquish's entire -5000 penalty for death can be completely bypassed by quitting to the main menu and restoring at the most recent checkpoint.
    So, yeah, XVI's scoring criteria is busted, but once I stopped paying attention to the numbers, I had a much better time.

  • @MmmJurak
    @MmmJurak Год назад +5

    just one small correction: you recieve extra score for recieving no damage at the end of the stage, when all trophies appear. Though doing the entire stage by taking no damage at all can be very difficult and i m not sure it can compensate points lost in the "carefullness" you have to put in combat combo in order to achieve it.

    I had an idea recently. What if they added a talisman that gets rid of the cooldown of all the non ultimate abilities while also reducing their effectiveness by a bunch, let's say 80%?
    That way you could actually incorporate more special moves into combos without trivializing the entire game.
    I'm also confused about why they limited stomps to just 2. The game has so many really strong things, more stomps is not the thing that would've broken it, having unlimited stomps would open up the combat so much more.
    The game is an easy 8 or 9/10 for me, if abilities weren't tied to cooldowns and we had unlimited stomps(or at least much more), it would be a guaranteed 9.

    I agree completely, the idea of doing an ultimaniac mode run SHOULD BE to set high scores based on doing cool combo strings, not taking damage, and doing it within a time threshold. Instead we basically have a mode where your goal is to use the same couple tricks to gain as much points as possible. Your totally right they should rework the points system so that maybe taking damage sees you lose points, and that parry’s and dodges gain considerable points, and third there needs to be a valid reason to use all of the different skills. I’m having a blast either way but getting crap scores because I refuse to just do the same trick over and over really is annoying

    Getting to the top of the leaderboards requires that you play in an incredibly boring and unfun way, dragging out encounters as long as possible. It's joyless, and I don't want my memories of this game to be like that, so I'm simply not going to try for high scores.

    Another thing I've noticed is that defensive abilities such as precision dodges and even Permafrost don't give any points at all despite their nature of the word showing up on screen and being part of the hierarchy system.

    Story Mode should have been the 1'st standard run difficulty (with the Timely "journalist mode" accessories being accessibility options).
    Action Mode should have been what Final Fantasy mode offers.
    NG+ should have had an option to unlock Hard Mode (where you can keep your abilities and truly show-off skill)

    1. changes to the point system to not encourage primarily the big AOE move spam for rainbow ranks on the side would be nice
    2. points awarded for no-damage and no-item would be really nice
    3. being able to see the accolades before hand would be great, there are a lot of unique ones that can be real hard to discover. I didn't even know there were true elemental weaknesses till I saw the accolades in arcade mode. I would like to be able to kit up for specific missions based off of those beforehand.
    4. being able to replay bounties from the arcade/arete stone would be the cherry on top. some of the enemy variants are really fun to fight

    I’m about slightly more than halfway with my own playthrough and while it’s unfortunately easy, I’m glad I made the decision to not use items or accessories but I really wanted to watch this video and it’s left me disappointed. It doesn’t help that people online keep bringing up the Combat Director as if that makes all these design choices feel more impressive. I’m also disappointed that FF16 has a lock on button but does not use it for directional attacks and styles are left to a button press which you can easily accidentally press one too many times rather than use the dpad which I thought would’ve been core for another game with different styles. Instead items are incentivized and Torgal’s actions are basically directional but in a generally less favorable manner. I’m sounding a bit salty but I do enjoy the world and characters just outright, I have no complaints there. I just don’t get why ARPGs feel the need to slightly complicate controls rather than their mechanics. I do agree that Final Fantasy Mode being locked to NG+ is a good thing because I think people tend to do one and done playthroughs which never gets to showcase how a level playing field like going from normal to hard to DMD in DMC is overall better than just doing a fresh hard mode run.

    I agree that doing the difficult tech such as long air combos and parrys needs to be awarded way more points. But the system discourages spamming the same move over and over again on every single enemy. So you really have to use your whole arsenal in a creative way to get high scores, which i hope they dont change.

  • @HatterCat2245
    @HatterCat2245 Год назад +4

    Agreed, the more I play the more I realize this game is definitely geared towards DPSing the enemy down rather than style. While you do control your buttons, its still reliant on damage number, which I find to be a problem when it comes to character action games bc it begins to take away from exploring your kit to see the things you can do, and rely on the ones that gives you big number. I do wish the arcade modes were more like the arete eikon trials, those were really fun and even tho i only had one eikon to work with, the pressure of time and time GAIN by doing specific moves and even in a specific way was really fun! I think The best character action really pressures you with time and a score based on variety, along with the need to take no damage to really show your skill. But I think this was going to be hard to pull off in the first place because the devs also needed to think about not turning the older FF fans, and people who aren't super good at action games away. I think this game did a good job striking a middle ground, but its also kinda stuck there lol.

      I don't think arcade mode is that different from the Chronolith trials in the game. it is true that it has a timer as well, but how you get time is pretty similar to how you get points in arcade mode. if you do the things that give you a lot of points in arcade mode in them you will not have to worry about the time at all (like some Chronolith trials I finished with 10 minutes left because I could just farm time like farming points in arcade mode)

      Not wrong if you consider every eikons 4th ability, Odin and will o the wykes assist items.
      Every clear of ultimaniac I've seen so far is people using every big ability and will o the wykes, it's kind of depressing because all that stuff just feels like an extension of the timely accessories and I feel bad for using them because they're so OP but I also feel like an idiot for not using them especially when the game doesn't try to dissuade you in any way from using them, the scoring system doesn't weigh more towards combos anyway and cure casting enemies can snowball out of control if there's 3+ without at least 1 big move.

    This is what I feared when they announced the mode. I would’ve preferred they made some sort of endless mode like in Returnal or Streets of Rage 4. I actually like the chronolith trials. They should combine the arcade mode and chronolith into one mode and randomize your eikon load outs every few phases so we’re forced to use other builds.

  • @obamaorb7426
    @obamaorb7426 Год назад +1

    Honestly I think just removing the ultimate eikon abilities, nerfing the max number of hits from lightning rod, nerfing the duration of permafrost (or giving it severe diminishing returns) and reworking odin as a whole would go a long way toward making the game balance way better. Especially that last point, if Zan was removed and the abilities kept with reasonable damage, ones like Gungnir would be really cool to incorporate into combos. Perhaps they could make it so the gauge is charged with odin actions and gives you time with arm of darkness, which would of course actually be good damage in this case.

    • @Jay-mx5ky
      @Jay-mx5ky Год назад +1

      Nerfing the eikons is not the answer imo. All that really needs to be done is a (better) decay of points for constantly spamming similar moves, forcing you to cycle and use other moves before using a move again. Zan into Dancing steel into Zan again should give you a significant decay in points unless you use other eikon abilities first. They do this well in devil may cry.
      Similarly, points given for lightning rod hitting the first time should be drastically different from lightning rod hitting the 10th or 20th time.

    • @xDevilNeverCry

      Hell and Hell for the most part is manageable when going for S Ranks as no damaging a mission in DMC5 will almost always guarantee you an S Rank (aside from the problem stages) if you struggle to build points. If you’re simply playing Ultimaniac just to beat it and not for ranks then it provides a good challenge.

    I love Devil May Cry. I suck at Devil May Cry. I don't always get SSS let's alone S ranks, but I have a ton of fun fumbling my way to victory.
    I found FF16 to be heavily inspired by DMC, but inferior in many areas. The ranking system here was clearly an afterthought that I started ignoring 2-3 hours in, when it became apparent that it did absolutely nothing. I did enjoy the rainbow colored text if you hit a super next to a lot of enemies but they was the peak of my enjoyment of that feature.
    Difficulty wise it was also clearly not a central focus for square enix or they simply didn't know how to balance all of the amazing tools at Clive's disposal (that would make any DMC protagonist jealous) with a challenging game.
    Based on the Eikon battles, this game was made purely for spectacle. They took the shiny toys in DMC but none of the situations that the toys really thrived in upon after mastering them.
    It is what it is, sadly. We all wish it was more :( maybe DLC?

  • @SpaceCattttt
    @SpaceCattttt Год назад

    My main problem with the harder difficulties isn't that they're harder (or not hard enough) but the fact that enemies become damage sponges.
    Their attack patterns don't change at all. You just have to slap them a few million times more than before. And that's not fun.

  • @Something5059
    @Something5059 Год назад

    The only thing they'd need to change to make FF mode the default are the levels because the enemies take too much damage due to the gearing. The only thing that may be hard is the fact that they introduce flying creatures that can cure, with a pretty bad targeting system.
    The game is easy because yoshida wanted EVERYONE to be able to beat this and literally put easy mode with a "you have a 99.9% chance to win" button in the game because he didn't want anyone to miss out, the drawback to this is that the game can feel lacking in depth and choice.
    Ultimatic though, I do agree needs to be upgraded and fixed, while I have no proof, I'm 99% sure that the mode was just thrown on with no thought to it because it wasn't a part of their main plan for the game.

  • @ajaykundlas7461
    @ajaykundlas7461 Год назад

    For me personally, unless your game is like FF7R or the Wonderful 101 where the game is clearly and specifically designed in a way where you physically can't win on the higher difficulties without getting resources on a first playthrough, making the option available from the start should be an option. That being said, a lot of my issues with XVI really boil down to a lack of challenge from the enemies. It's not easy balancing action game enemies in a way that demands skill while also allowing for creative expression through gameplay, but at least for me, XVI def pushed the latter at the cost of the former.
    I fully acknowledge this may just be a me problem since I prefer games like Bayonetta or The Wonderful 101 or FF7R which are hardcore challenging and demand mastery to earn moments of style and juggling. Also worth acknowledging that XVI going for a more accessible route to facilitate the story and be a safe AAA return for a numbered mainline FF is something we've needed for a while. I respect the game for what it's trying to do, but I think it's catering to too many demo's at once for me to really sink into it. I like the game, but I'm not in love with it the way I am Remake or Bayonetta or Stranger of Paradise.

    ultimaniac is so fucking bad right now. I've said before that the rating system is like a bad gymnastic judge. Some moves are innately shit, and I don't see ways to mediate this since the scoring system is their way of nerfing easy to use moves. DMC style meter doesn't even work here because combo is easy and stringed together by one press of a button
