For the past decade, Sullivan Fortner has been stretching deep-rooted talents as a pianist, composer, bandleader, and uncompromising individualist. The GRAMMY Award-winning artist received international praise as both key player and producer for his collaborative work on The Window (Mack Avenue, 2018), alongside multi-GRAMMY winner, vocalist-composer Cecile McLorin Salvant. As a solo leader, he has released Moments Preserved (Decca, 2018) and Aria (Impulse!, 2015) to critical acclaim, and he’s only getting started. This past year, Fortner earned recognition in multiple DownBeat Critics Poll categories, winning first place in Rising Star Piano and Rising Star Jazz Artist. Видеоклипы
I think Chopin would be like “that’s deep, man”
I got to see him perform with mood swing on a night that he actually subbed for Brad mehldau because he fell ill before the show. He was unreal
“Who are some of your favourite pianists the most people don’t know and should check out?” - “Clarence Profit, Lee Sims, Chris Anderson, Mal Waldron, San Ra, Duke Ellington, Mary Low Williams, Lee Hardin Armstrong….”
love when contemporary pianists like Fortner break out some Scott Joplin!
A brilliant pianist and a beautiful soul.
Always loved him as a pianist... Now I love his voice too
Just found Sullivan Fortner by way of Adam Maness and found my way here. This is absolutely brilliant. Many thanks to Xavier University, and Sullivan Fortner. Look at those quiet hands!!
came here after hearing Peter and Adam talk about him, you'll hear it 😉
Whole set is incredible! Standouts for me included technique on “Love for Sale” in the solo section - inspiring and almost unimaginable depth of control and Liszt level chops~ the reworked version of Minute Waltz is extremely cool 😅😮 🙏
fantastic piano jazz player and one of the best stride piano player actually (with E Cohen and L Filastro)
Thank you very much
Yes indeed. Sullivan is amazing.
Do you know Rossano Sportielo, he is a fine stride piano player too

Two thumbs up for a fabulous pianist and great performance. However, I can't seem to listen to this recording- in places, there's an interruption every few seconds. Anybody else?
Thank you

This dude is a great pianist, but one thing that gets me about the jazz scene is the low level of production values. It seems like all the efforts go into the raw musicality and a generally low bar of quality when relating that musicality to an audience, whether that's live or recorded.
A lot of jazz musicians even some that are well known don't have the money to pay full time managers or producers. They spend their time working either on playing, rehearsals or searching for work by themselves. The gigs really don't pay especially in the US so they have to play a lot and invest most of the time they have searching for gigs and playing.
Most of the time the quality of the material depends if the dude playing is into audio engineering and stuff like that, which doesn't seems to be Sullivan's priority.
